History of electroconvulsive therapy in the United States in the last decades

Despite its acknowledged efficacy and safety in the treatment of patients with severe affective and psychotic illnesses, as well as extensive efforts at professional and public education, electroconvulsive therapy is a neglected treatment, its use in the U.S. being mainly restricted to academic and private hospitals. Widespread use between 1935 and 1960, a rapid decline following the introduction of psychoactive drugs, and a slow resurgence in clinical interest since 1975 characterizes its history. The use of ECT has been encouraged by repeated favorable evaluations and by new procedures which improve both its efficacy and its safety. The experience in the United States provides a lesson for other nations where its use is inhibited.

Hyperthermia in cancer research: current status

There are critical maximum temperatures above which irreversible damage occurs in cells and tissues. Exposure to high temperature, referred to as hyperthermia (HT), can result in cell death, tissue damage or even death of the organism. Clinical application of HT as a primary treatment or as an adjuvant to radio-/chemo- therapy of cancer is based on its ability to cause localized tumor tissue damage. Experimental data provide HT with a strong biological rationale. Early clinical experience suggested that HT will become an important modality as an adjuvant to radiotherapy in the treatment of human malignancies, but its application is currently limited to mainly superficial tumors. Its full realization as a treatment modality for cancer therapy awaits further laboratory investigations as well as controlled clinical trials. A better understanding of the biological mechanisms of its action, interaction with chemotherapeutic drugs and radiation damage, role of tumor microenvironment such as oxygen status and pH of tumors, and kinetics of thermotolerance can lead to refinement in its clinical implementation. The present review attempts to analyse the published literature during the last one and half decades.

The relevance of psychoanalysis and its place within its intellectual and cultural surround has been a major issue over the whole of its now more than a century-long history. A very significant aspect of that concern has been the status of psychoanalysis as a theory of the mind, and as a basis for the application of that theory in the conduct of a therapy for the disorders of the mind. This article reviews in depth the long-standing debate about psychoanalysis as a scientific theory, the kind of science that psychoanalysis is--or can be--and the place of research, empirical as well as conceptual (with particular focus upon research into the nature of the therapeutic change process and its desired outcomes), in the incremental growth of that theory and its therapeutic applications in an ever expanding and increasingly secure knowledge base. Chronic hepatitis in an infant, in association with human herpesvirus-6 infection

1. We examined the effects of TYB-2285 and its metabolites (TC-286 and TC-326) on antigen-induced lymphocyte proliferation, allogeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) and mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation. 2. Splenic lymphocytes from C57BL/6 strain mice sensitized with human serum albumin were cultured with the antigen in the presence of TYB-2285 or its metabolites (10(-7)-10(-4) M). The lymphocyte proliferation enhanced by antigen was inhibited by TYB-2285 and its metabolites in a dose-dependent manner. 3. Splenic lymphocytes collected from C57BL/6 and Balb/C strain mice were cocultured in the presence of TYB-2285 and its metabolites (10(-7)-10(-4) M). Allogeneic MLR was inhibited by TYB-2285 and its metabolites in a dose-dependent manner. 4. Splenic lymphocytes from C47BL/6 strain mice were cultured with concanavalin A (Con A) in the presence of TYB-2285 and its metabolites (10(-7)-10(-4) M). TYB-2285 and its metabolites did not affect Con A-induced lymphocyte proliferation. Cyclosporin A showed an inhibitory effect on Con A-induced lymphocyte proliferation that was as strong as the inhibitory effect on antigen-induced lymphocyte proliferation and allogeneic MLR at a lower concentration.     

The facilitation of change in organizations.

Describes and critiques organizational development (OD) and explores its origins, its present condition and practice, and its future trends and issues. The demands of a changing environment and the evolution of the applied behavioral sciences contributed to the emergence of OD. Unlike clinical, social, and industrial psychology, OD focuses on the organization itself. One of the most prominent trends in OD during the past 10 yrs has been its transition from a solely "micro" concern to a more integrated micro–macro perspective. Today OD is emerging as a field of interdisciplinary academic study and as a recognized profession. Specific issues considered in this article include how organizational development professionals can help organizations plan for their future and implement changes using OD's personal, structural, technological, and environmental processes, and what the role is of the behavioral scientist as consultant.
