In this paper, we propose a three‐dimensional (3D) grayscale‐free topology optimization method using a conforming mesh to the structural boundary, which is represented by the level‐set method. The conforming mesh is generated in an r‐refinement manner; that is, it is generated by moving the nodes of the Eulerian mesh that maintains the level‐set function. Although the r‐refinement approach for the conforming mesh generation has many benefits from an implementation aspect, it has been considered as a difficult task to stably generate 3D conforming meshes in the r‐refinement manner. To resolve this task, we propose a new level‐set based r‐refinement method. Its main novelty is a procedure for minimizing the number of the collapsed elements whose nodes are moved to the structural boundary in the conforming mesh; in addition, we propose a new procedure for improving the quality of the conforming mesh, which is inspired by Laplacian smoothing. Because of these novelties, the proposed r‐refinement method can generate 3D conforming meshes at a satisfactory level, and 3D grayscale‐free topology optimization is realized. The usefulness of the proposed 3D grayscale‐free topology optimization method is confirmed through several numerical examples. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper presents an adaptive mesh adjustment algorithm for continuum topology optimization method to describe the structural boundary using nonuniform isoparametric element. A criterion on the basis of the node movement is proposed; herein, the densities and coordinates of the nodes are defined to instruct the deformation of finite elements in subsequent optimization iterations. With such a scheme, the topology optimization can start from a regular mesh discretization then gradually yields an optimal design with clear structural boundaries. The element in the transition along the boundary is refined; on the contrary, the pure solid or void element is coarsen. The contribution of this work is to improve the resolution of the structural boundaries and decrease the percentage of transitional regions with the invariant design variable. Several 2D and 3D numerical examples indicate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Seen from the examples, the structural boundary become smoother and the intermediate densities have been reduced up to 70%. In addition, a design process based on the presented method is proposed to make the optimum solutions be fabricated conveniently and accurately by linking it with the 3D design software, ie, SolidWorks, which is also demonstrated in the numerical examples.  相似文献

Level set methods are becoming an attractive design tool in shape and topology optimization for obtaining efficient and lighter structures. In this paper, a dynamic implicit boundary‐based moving superimposed finite element method (s‐version FEM or S‐FEM) is developed for structural topology optimization using the level set methods, in which the variational interior and exterior boundaries are represented by the zero level set. Both a global mesh and an overlaying local mesh are integrated into the moving S‐FEM analysis model. A relatively coarse fixed Eulerian mesh consisting of bilinear rectangular elements is used as a global mesh. The local mesh consisting of flexible linear triangular elements is constructed to match the dynamic implicit boundary captured from nodal values of the implicit level set function. In numerical integration using the Gauss quadrature rule, the practical difficulty due to the discontinuities is overcome by the coincidence of the global and local meshes. A double mapping technique is developed to perform the numerical integration for the global and coupling matrices of the overlapped elements with two different co‐ordinate systems. An element killing strategy is presented to reduce the total number of degrees of freedom to improve the computational efficiency. A simple constraint handling approach is proposed to perform minimum compliance design with a volume constraint. A physically meaningful and numerically efficient velocity extension method is developed to avoid the complicated PDE solving procedure. The proposed moving S‐FEM is applied to structural topology optimization using the level set methods as an effective tool for the numerical analysis of the linear elasticity topology optimization problems. For the classical elasticity problems in the literature, the present S‐FEM can achieve numerical results in good agreement with those from the theoretical solutions and/or numerical results from the standard FEM. For the minimum compliance topology optimization problems in structural optimization, the present approach significantly outperforms the well‐recognized ‘ersatz material’ approach as expected in the accuracy of the strain field, numerical stability, and representation fidelity at the expense of increased computational time. It is also shown that the present approach is able to produce structures near the theoretical optimum. It is suggested that the present S‐FEM can be a promising tool for shape and topology optimization using the level set methods. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this article, the bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method based on the element-free Galerkin (EFG) method is presented for topology optimization of continuum structures. The mathematical formulation of the topology optimization is developed considering the nodal strain energy as the design variable and the minimization of compliance as the objective function. The EFG method is used to derive the shape functions using the moving least squares approximation. The essential boundary conditions are enforced by the method of Lagrange multipliers. Several topology optimization problems are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Many issues related to topology optimization of continuum structures, such as chequerboard patterns and mesh dependency, are studied in the examples.  相似文献

This article introduces the element-propagating method to structural shape and topology optimization. Structural optimization based on the conventional level-set method needs to solve several partial differential equations. By the insertion and deletion of basic material elements around the geometric boundary, the element-propagating method can avoid solving the partial differential equations and realize the dynamic updating of the material region. This approach also places no restrictions on the signed distance function and the Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy condition for numerical stability. At the same time, in order to suppress the dependence on the design initialization for the 2D structural optimization problem, the strain energy density is taken as a criterion to generate new holes in the material region. The coupled algorithm of the element-propagating method and the method for generating new holes makes the structural optimization more robust. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed approach greatly improves numerical efficiency, compared with the conventional level-set method for structural topology optimization.  相似文献

This paper proposes a level‐set based topology optimization method incorporating a boundary tracking mesh generating method and nonlinear programming. Because the boundary tracking mesh is always conformed to the structural boundary, good approximation to the boundary is maintained during optimization; therefore, structural design problems are solved completely without grayscale material. Previously, we introduced the boundary tracking mesh generating method into level‐set based topology optimization and updated the design variables by solving the level‐set equation. In order to adapt our previous method to general structural optimization frameworks, the incorporation of the method with nonlinear programming is investigated in this paper. To successfully incorporate nonlinear programming, the optimization problem is regularized using a double‐well potential. Furthermore, the sensitivities with respect to the design variables are strictly derived to maintain consistency in mathematical programming. We expect the investigation to open up a new class of grayscale‐free topology optimization. The usefulness of the proposed method is demonstrated using several numerical examples targeting two‐dimensional compliant mechanism and metallic waveguide design problems. With the fast development of additive manufacturing technology, topology optimization involving multiple materials has received ever increasing attention. Traditionally, this kind of optimization problem is solved within the implicit solution framework by using the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization or level set method. This treatment, however, will inevitably lead to a large number of design variables especially when many types of materials are involved and 3‐dimensional (3D) problems are considered. This is because for each type of material, a corresponding density field/level function defined on the entire design domain must be introduced to describe its distribution. In the present paper, a novel approach for topology optimization with multiple materials is established based on the Moving Morphable Component framework. With use of this approach, topology optimization problems with multiple materials can be solved with much less numbers of design variables and degrees of freedom. Numerical examples provided demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.  相似文献

Nonlinear structural optimization is fairly expensive and difficult, because a large number of nonlinear analyses is required due to the large number of design variables involved in topology optimization. In element density based topology optimization, the low density elements create mesh distortion and the updating of finite element material with low density elements has a severe effect on the optimization results in the next cycles. In order to overcome these difficulties, the equivalent static loads method for nonlinear response structural optimization (ESLSO) primarily used for size and shape optimization has been applied to topology optimization. The nonlinear analysis is performed with the given loading conditions to calculate equivalent static loads (ESLs) and these ESLs are used to perform linear response optimization. In this paper, the authors have presented the results of five case studies with material, geometric and contact nonlinearities showing good agreement and providing justification of the proposed method.  相似文献

Bilateral filtering for structural topology optimization   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Filtering has been a major approach used in the homogenization‐based methods for structural topology optimization to suppress the checkerboard pattern and relieve the numerical instabilities. In this paper a bilateral filtering technique originally developed in image processing is presented as an efficient approach to regularizing the topology optimization problem. A non‐linear bilateral filtering process leads to a suitable problem regularization to eliminate the checkerboard instability, pronounced edge preserving smoothing characteristics to favour the 0–1 convergence of the mass distribution, and computational efficiency due to its single pass and non‐iterative nature. Thus, we show that the application of the bilateral filtering brings more desirable effects of checkerboard‐free, mesh independence, crisp boundary, computational efficiency and conceptual simplicity. The proposed bilateral technique has a close relationship with the conventional domain filtering and range filtering. The proposed method is implemented in the framework of a power‐law approach based on the optimality criteria and illustrated with 2D examples of minimum compliance design that has been extensively studied in the recent literature of topology optimization and its efficiency and accuracy are highlighted. This paper aims to propose a meshless Galerkin level set method for shape and topology optimization of continuum structures. To take advantage of the implicit free boundary representation scheme, the design boundary is represented as the zero level set of a scalar level set function, to flexibly handle complex shape fidelity and topology changes by maintaining concise and smooth interface. Compactly supported radial basis functions (CSRBFs) are used to parameterize the level set function and construct the shape functions for meshfree approximations based on a set of unstructured field nodes. The meshless Galerkin method with global weak form is used to implement the discretization of the state equations. This provides a pathway to unify the two different numerical stages in most conventional level set methods: (1) the propagation of discrete level set function on a set of Eulerian grid and (2) the approximation of discrete equations on a set of Lagrangian mesh. The original more difficult shape and topology optimization based on the level set equation is transformed into a relatively easier size optimization, to which many efficient optimization algorithms can be applied. The proposed level set method can describe the moving boundaries without remeshing for discontinuities. The motion of the free boundary is just a question of advancing the discrete level set function in time by solving the size optimization. Several benchmark examples are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The numerical results show that the proposed method can simplify numerical process and avoid numerical difficulties involved in most conventional level set methods. It is straightforward to apply the proposed method to more advanced shape and topology optimization problems. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The level set method is a promising approach to provide flexibility in dealing with topological changes during structural optimization. Normally, the level set surface, which depicts a structure's topology by a level contour set of a continuous scalar function embedded in space, is interpolated on a fixed mesh. The accuracy of the boundary positions is therefore largely dependent on the mesh density, a characteristic of any Eulerian expression when using a fixed mesh. This article combines the adaptive moving mesh method with a level set structure topology optimization method. The finite element mesh automatically maintains a high nodal density around the structural boundaries of the material domain, whereas the mesh topology remains unchanged. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effect of the combination of a Lagrangian expression for a moving mesh and a Eulerian expression for capturing the moving boundaries.  相似文献

Linear buckling constraints are important in structural topology optimization for obtaining designs that can support the required loads without failure. During the optimization process, the critical buckling eigenmode can change; this poses a challenge to gradient‐based optimization and can require the computation of a large number of linear buckling eigenmodes. This is potentially both computationally difficult to achieve and prohibitively expensive. In this paper, we motivate the need for a large number of linear buckling modes and show how several features of the block Jacobi conjugate gradient (BJCG) eigenvalue method, including optimal shift estimates, the reuse of eigenvectors, adaptive eigenvector tolerances and multiple shifts, can be used to efficiently and robustly compute a large number of buckling eigenmodes. This paper also introduces linear buckling constraints for level‐set topology optimization. In our approach, the velocity function is defined as a weighted sum of the shape sensitivities for the objective and constraint functions. The weights are found by solving an optimization sub‐problem to reduce the mass while maintaining feasibility of the buckling constraints. The effectiveness of this approach in combination with the BJCG method is demonstrated using a 3D optimization problem. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study presents a new algorithm for structural topological optimization of two-dimensional continuum structures by combining the extended finite element method (X-FEM) with an evolutionary optimization algorithm. Taking advantage of an isoline design approach for boundary representation in a fixed grid domain, X-FEM can be implemented to improve the accuracy of finite element solutions on the boundary during the optimization process. Although this approach does not use any remeshing or moving mesh algorithms, final topologies have smooth and clearly defined boundaries which need no further interpretation. Numerical comparisons of the converged solutions with standard bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization solutions show the efficiency of the proposed method, and comparison with the converged solutions using MSC NASTRAN confirms the high accuracy of this method.  相似文献

The proposed methodology is based on the use of the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR ) techniques in the context of 2D shape optimization problems analysed by the finite element method. A suitable and very general technique for the parametrization of the optimization problem, using B-splines to define the boundary, is first presented. Then mesh generation, using the advancing frontal method, the error estimator and the mesh refinement criterion are studied in the context of shape optimization problems In particular, the analytical sensitivity analysis of the different items ruling the problem (B-splines. finite element mesh, structural behaviour and error estimator) is studied in detail. The sensitivities of the finite element mesh and error estimator permit their projection from one design to the next one leading to an a priori knowledge of the finite element error distribution on the new design without the necessity of any additional structural analysis. With this information the mesh refinement criterion permits one to build up a finite element mesh on the new design with a specified and controlled level of error. The robustness and reliability of the proposed methodology is checked by means of several examples.  相似文献

Mesh independent analysis is motivated by the desire to use accurate geometric models represented as equations rather than approximated by a mesh. The trial and test functions are approximated or interpolated on a background mesh that is independent of the geometry. This background mesh is easy to generate because it does not have to conform to the geometry. Essential boundary conditions can be applied using the implicit boundary method where the trial and test functions are constructed utilizing approximate step functions such that the boundary conditions are guaranteed to be satisfied. This approach has been demonstrated for two‐dimensional (2D) and three‐dimensional (3D) structural analysis and is extended in this paper to model shell‐like structures. The background mesh consists of 3D elements that use uniform B‐spline approximations, and the shell geometry is assumed to be defined as parametric surfaces to allow arbitrarily complex shell‐like structures to be modeled. Several benchmark problems are used to study the validity of these 3D B‐spline shell elements. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Genetic algorithms (GAs) have become a popular optimization tool for many areas of research and topology optimization an effective design tool for obtaining efficient and lighter structures. In this paper, a versatile, robust and enhanced GA is proposed for structural topology optimization by using problem‐specific knowledge. The original discrete black‐and‐white (0–1) problem is directly solved by using a bit‐array representation method. To address the related pronounced connectivity issue effectively, the four‐neighbourhood connectivity is used to suppress the occurrence of checkerboard patterns. A simpler version of the perimeter control approach is developed to obtain a well‐posed problem and the total number of hinges of each individual is explicitly penalized to achieve a hinge‐free design. To handle the problem of representation degeneracy effectively, a recessive gene technique is applied to viable topologies while unusable topologies are penalized in a hierarchical manner. An efficient FEM‐based function evaluation method is developed to reduce the computational cost. A dynamic penalty method is presented for the GA to convert the constrained optimization problem into an unconstrained problem without the possible degeneracy. With all these enhancements and appropriate choice of the GA operators, the present GA can achieve significant improvements in evolving into near‐optimum solutions and viable topologies with checkerboard free, mesh independent and hinge‐free characteristics. Numerical results show that the present GA can be more efficient and robust than the conventional GAs in solving the structural topology optimization problems of minimum compliance design, minimum weight design and optimal compliant mechanisms design. It is suggested that the present enhanced GA using problem‐specific knowledge can be a powerful global search tool for structural topology optimization. In this paper, we propose a new BEM for level‐set based topology optimization. In the proposed BEM, the nodal coordinates of the boundary element are replaced with the nodal level‐set function and the nodal coordinates of the Eulerian mesh that maintains the level‐set function. Because this replacement causes the nodal coordinates of the boundary element to disappear, the boundary element mesh appears to be immersed in the Eulerian mesh. Therefore, we call the proposed BEM an immersed BEM. The relationship between the nodal coordinates of the boundary element and the nodal level‐set function of the Eulerian mesh is clearly represented, and therefore, the sensitivities with respect to the nodal level‐set function are strictly derived in the immersed BEM. Furthermore, the immersed BEM completely eliminates grayscale elements that are known to cause numerical difficulties in topology optimization. By using the immersed BEM, we construct a concrete topology optimization method for solving the minimum compliance problem. We provide some numerical examples and discuss the usefulness of the constructed optimization method on the basis of the obtained results. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
