In this paper, the westernmost of the three bored tunnels in the Betuweroute is outlined: the twin bored Botlek Rail Tunnel. This paper deals with the specific local boundaries and the characteristic design features. Special emphasis is placed on the design of the shield tunnel boring machine. This evolved from a special proposal from the bidding contractors group BTC—a combination of Ballast Nedam, HBW, Strukton, Van Hattum en Blankevoort and Wayss & Freytag—which included an Earth pressure balanced shield (EPB-shield) instead of the slurry balanced shield that was foreseen in the reference design of the Client NS-RIB (Dutch Railways).  相似文献

The direct strength method (DSM) has been adopted by the NAS (2004) and AS/NZS 4600 (2005) for the design of cold-formed steel members. The method can be successfully applied to the design of welded and hot-rolled sections. This paper reviews the development of the DSM for welded steel structural members. The design strength formulae for welded section columns and beams for the DSM are provided based on the tests performed on welded H-section, C-section, circular and rectangular hollow section columns fabricated from steel plates whose nominal yield stress is 235 MPa or 315 MPa. The comparison between the design strength of welded sections predicted by the DSM and that estimated by existing specifications is provided. This paper verifies that the DSM which adopts the nominal axial strength and flexural strength in the AISC (2010) or EC3 (2004) can properly predict the ultimate strength of welded section columns and beams.  相似文献

This paper reports research conducted in collaboration with the Hunt Museum, Limerick, Ireland, which examined how children's interaction in museums could be augmented through co-operative design. The paper describes the participatory design process that was undertaken over a two-year period, involving key informants and stakeholders, including teachers, docents (specialist museum guides) and curators. The designers also explored the potential of ubiquitous computing to enhance children's interpretive experience in museums, and this is also described. The research reported in this paper was supported within the EU disappearing computer (DC) initiative, specifically the SHAPE project. The goal of SHAPE, Situating Hybrid Assemblies in Public Environments, was to explore how emerging, novel computer technologies could be deployed in public spaces to enhance interaction and learning. The project culminated in the deployment of an innovative, large-scale computer-augmented exhibition, Re-Tracing the Past, in the Hunt Museum. This novel exhibition was open to the public from 9 to 19 June 2003. This paper documents the design process from initial scenario elaboration through to final deployment of novel technology in the museum. Evaluation data are also discussed, and the paper concludes with some insights for participatory design of technology to enhance children's interaction in museums. Furthermore, the review of evaluation data illustrates how the design themes that informed the extensive design process were successfully embodied in the final exhibition in the museum.  相似文献

The paper is concerned with the design of virtual environments for collaborative design (VECD) – a particular class of collaborative virtual environments (CVEs) that focus on supporting design activities. VECD are becoming essential collaboration platforms for many designers and their clients, in a wide range of design domains including product, interior, architectural, automotive design, etc. However, the contemporary design considerations of VECD are mainly driven by systematic approaches that do not reflect upon knowledge regarding requirements that stem out of everyday collaborative design activities. A consequence is that they do not yield methodical guidance to designers of VECD applications. This paper takes a social action standpoint for the purposeful identification and organisation of collaborative design activities; proposes guidelines at multiple levels of abstraction for the design of VECD; and, finally, applies these to a case study development of a specific VECD for interior space design. The paper provides practical aids to designers of VECD so that they incorporate requirements about collaborative design early in the development lifecycle.  相似文献

This paper provides the practicing designer with a comprehensive, systematic approach to solving common filtration design problems. Current filter design procedures often include only permeability and retention criteria. Several other concepts should be incorporated into the design process, such as: (i) consideration of whether permeability or retention is the primary function of a filter within the given application; (ii) quantifying the internal stability of soil; and (iii) addressing survivability and durability issues.

This paper incorporates several recently-developed design concepts, together with currently-used geotextile filter design criteria, into a comprehensive nine-step design methodology. Each step is discussed, specific numerical criteria are given, and information is provided for determining the parameters needed to satisfy the design criteria. The result is a user-oriented document for designing geotextile filters.  相似文献

This practice paper reflects on the national design advice service in Scotland that has been operated by Architecture & Design Scotland (A&DS) since 2005. Placed in the context of research on design review practice, the paper describes how design review in Scotland has evolved from a traditional panel model operating alongside a range of training and skills development functions into a more holistic and dynamic design advice service. The paper argues that the evolution of design review in Scotland signifies an innovative shift away from the often combative setting of a design panel, where the force of an argument frequently wins the day, towards a more measured, iterative and collaborative process of nurturing and enabling well-designed buildings and places.  相似文献

This paper presents the assessment of experimental data for electrical and thermal performance evaluation of photovoltaic (PV) systems integrated as cladding components into the building envelope, giving input to modelling and analysis work. From the experience gained in several EU research projects, an improved design for a common Test Reference Environment (TRE) has been developed. This specific design of the PV module and TRE makes it possible to study, through electrical and thermal energy flow analysis, the effect on electrical performance of using different materials for PV modules and the construction design of claddings. The results for a glass–glass PV module with forced ventilation are presented.  相似文献

This paper presents and evaluates two current advancements of collaborative technologies for architectural design. The paper focuses on technologies that support synchronous design collaboration, in particular, 3D virtual worlds for supporting remote design collaboration, and tangible user interfaces (TUIs) for enhancing co-located design collaboration. Both technologies enable designers to collaborate by interacting with 3D models as the design representations. The paper analyzes the effect of these technologies on design collaboration and cognition through a comprehensive interpretation of the results from two independent studies. These two studies, using protocol analysis and each focusing on a different mode of design collaboration, provide the foundation for characterizing the designers' cognition, communication and interaction when using the new technologies. The 3D virtual worlds study investigates remote design collaboration in a 3D virtual world in order to understand the changes of design behavior when designers are physically remote but virtually co-located as avatars within their design representation in the form of a 3D model. The TUI study measures the effect of a tabletop system that integrates TUIs together with augmented reality (AR) on designers' cognitive activities and design process in co-located design collaboration. Finally, the analysis and comparison of the results converge in a set of recommendations for the future development of collaborative design technologies.  相似文献
