Service-oriented Access to Next Generation Networks—from Service Creation to Execution

Existing telecommunication networks and classical roles of operators are subject to fundamental change. Many network operators are currently seeking for new sources to generate revenue by exposing network capabilities to 3rd party service providers. At the same time we can observe that services on the World Wide Web (WWW) are becoming mature in terms of the definition of APIs that are offered towards other services. The combinations of those services are commonly referred to as Web 2.0 mash-ups. Rapid service design and creation becomes therefore important to meet the requirements in a changing technology and competitive market environment. This report describes our approach to include Next Generation Networks (NGN)-based telecommunications application enabler into complex services by defining a service broker that mediates between 3rd party applications and NGN service enablers. It provides policy-driven orchestration mechanisms for service enablers, a service authorization functionality, and a service discovery interface for Service Creation Environments. The work has been implemented as part of the Open SOA Telco Playground testbed at Fraunhofer FOKUS.

Will smartwatches last? factors contributing to intention to keep using smart wearable technology

This study aims to deepen our understanding of the underlying factors affecting the intention to continue using increasingly popular wearable technology. A new theoretical model is developed and validated to extend traditional technology acceptance theories by identifying several value drivers of the continuous intention and actual usage of wearable devices. Hypotheses were tested using partial least squares path modeling on data collected from 383 actual smartwatch users. The results provide wearable device manufacturers with practical guidance for optimizing competition strategies. They also offer policy-making insights for practitioners to promote better wearable devices on the market, especially during the early stages of adoption.     

Tomlinson-Harashima Precoded MIMO in wireless networks: to THP or not to THP?

We investigate a wireless network architecture that utilizes Tomlinson Harashima Precoded Multiple Input Multiple Output (THP MIMO) technique for improved system capacity. We consider THP MIMO in a multi user scenario, together with a proposed smart scheduling technique and we explore the capacity performance through extensive capacity analysis considering varying SNR levels, varying number of users and number of transmit/receive antennas, under fading and shadowing, also considering errors in channel state information (CSI). We also evaluate the complexity of THP MIMO and present a low-complexity scheduling algorithm that employs Gram-Schmidt algorithm for incremental implementation of THP’s QR factorization. In the end, we identify the network and channel conditions under which THP MIMO can be preferred over classical conventional MIMO, and we conclude that for practical transceivers with up to four antennas, THP MIMO can provide significant capacity enhancement over conventional MIMO at lower complexity, performing slightly below the sum rate capacity bound. Another important advantage that is observed in this study is better immunity of THP MIMO to CSI errors, as compared to conventional MIMO.
