Preliminary Study on Anther in vitro Culture of Lily "Prato"

The effects of the microspore developmental stage, hormones and culture condition on anther in vitro culture of lily (Lilium spp.) were discussed. The results showed that when the flower buds were about 23-26 mm long, the microspores were at the uninucleate stage wluch was suitable for culture and the culture under the darkness would promote the callus induction of anther. The induction frequency could reach 42.5% in the optimized medium which was MS+[6-BA(0.5)+KT(2.0)+2,4-D(1.0)]mg·L-1.The rate of callus differentiation could reach 31.57% in the optimized medium wluch was MS+NAA(1.5,2.0)mg·L-1.

Suggests that J. Harvey (see record 2005-11080-006) fundamentally did not grasp S. Kaplan's (see record 2005-11049-006) major thesis. The heart of Kaplan's viewpoint is that "The social definition is not added on to a biological constant which remains unchanged, but the social definition dominates and transforms biological reflexes." Kaplan's approach also does not delineate any dichotomy between biology and culture. Rather, it seems to the reviewer, it points up the fact that the very biologicalness of men is qualitatively transformed into new, different entities because of variegated acculturations. Review of Clinical Versus Statistical Prediction.

Reviews the book "Clinical versus statistical prediction," by Paul Everett Meehl (see record 1996-97896-000). Meehl attempts to plot a course to the port of valid prediction through the "rigorous" channels of statistical methods and the "sophisticated" undercurrents of clinical dynamics. Most of the book is devoted to a thoughtful but discursive analysis of the alternative strategies for prediction of statistical or actuarial methods as compared with clinical or casestudy methods. Meehl believes that much confusion could be avoided if careful distinction were made between two different uses of statistics, the types of data involved in prediction, and the methods of combining data in making predictions. Meehl does an excellent job of raising some of the basic problems and issues which have to be considered in carrying out research in this area. More on "Monkey Tricks".

Comments on "Monkey Tricks and Voodoo Psychology" by Solomon D. Kaplan (American Psychologist, 1960, 15, 219-220). Kaplan is the umpteenth person who has fallen into the error of creating a dichotomy between the culture and the biology of the individual, referring as so many others have to "society" or "the Culture" as though this represented some autonomous entity above and controlling the lives of individuals, but independent from and uninfluenced by them. The study of the relationship between biology and the culture is not helped when the culture or society is treated as though its formation and evolution had nothing to do with human beings. One way or another, directly or indirectly, consciously or unconsciously, human beings form the culture--every last little bit of it. The power of statistical tests in meta-analysis.

Calculations of the power of statistical tests are important in planning research studies (including meta-analyses) and in interpreting situations in which a result has not proven to be statistically significant. The authors describe procedures to compute statistical power of fixed- and random-effects tests of the mean effect size, tests for heterogeneity (or variation) of effect size parameters across studies, and tests for contrasts among effect sizes of different studies. Examples are given using 2 published meta-analyses. The examples illustrate that statistical power is not always high in meta-analysis. Long-range impact of "fair selection" standards on minority employment.

Reviews alternate statistical standards of "fair selection," including the standard that seems to be implicit in the federal employee selection guidelines. A human resource planning model is developed to simulate the impact of each standard on minority employment. In the model, the racial composition of the flows of employees into and through the organization is determined by the "fair selection" standard chosen for simulation. The model is applied to staffing data from an existing organization. Data show that the fairness standard implicit in the federal selection guidelines would have a worse effect on Black employment than would the implicit fairness standard typically used by employers.
