In the present work, polypropylene-based composites reinforced with three types of randomly distributed short lignocellulosic fibers, namely mechanical pulp (MP), deinked pulp (DIP), and jute strands, were prepared and analyzed. Addition of 6% (wt/wt) of MAPP resulted in a significant enhancement in the tensile strength in line with the improvement of the fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion making more effective the transfer of stress from the matrix to the rigid reinforcement. The mechanical properties of these composites were analyzed in terms of Bowyer–Bader and Hirsch models to fit the obtained experimental data. From the stress/strain curves and the fiber length distributions, it was possible to access to the orientation factor, the interfacial shear strength, the intrinsic tensile strength and the modulus of the fibers.  相似文献

In this investigation, carnauba fibers obtained from the leaves of the carnauba palm tree were chemically modified and their potential for the development of a biodegradable composite was evaluated. Fiber treatments to improve interfacial bonding were carried out by alkali, peroxide, potassium permanganate and acetylation. Biodegradable composites were prepared using carnauba fibers and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) as matrix. Mechanical properties of the composites prepared with 10 wt.% of short carnauba fibers were investigated and related to fiber treatment. According to the results, the tensile strength of the composites made from peroxide treated fibers was superior to those using untreated fibers or any other fiber treatment. SEM observations on the fracture surface of the composites suggest improved fiber–matrix adhesion after peroxide treatment. This surface modification of the fibers was found to contribute to the enhancement of the mechanical properties of the composites, even though the tensile strength of the fibers was slightly reduced. Dynamic mechanical thermal analyses suggested improvement in storage modulus of the composites reinforced with carnauba fibers at higher temperatures as compared to the neat polymer.  相似文献

The purpose of this work is to compare tensile, compressive and interlaminar shear properties of different carbon reinforcement/polyamide composites obtained by interfacial polymerization and hot compression molding techniques. Two types of composite matrices were studied: polyamide 6 and polyamide 6/6, both reinforced by fabric and unidirectional carbon fibers. The effects of the fiber volume fraction and the matrix on mechanical properties were analyzed through tensile, interlaminar shear and compressive tests. In general, the results have shown a slight increase of the composite elastic modulus, tensile and compressive strength with the increase of carbon fiber content. The microscopic damage development within selected composites during the loading has been observed through optical and scanning electron microscope techniques and has shown that shear failure at the fiber/matrix interface has been mostly responsible for damage development, initiated at relatively low stress.  相似文献

Polymer composites were fabricated with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and cellulosic natural fibers combining the wet-laid fiber sheet forming method with the film stacking composite-making process. The natural fibers studied included hardwood high yield pulp, softwood high yield pulp, and bleached kraft softwood pulp fibers. Composite mechanical and thermal properties were characterized. The incorporation of pulp fibers significantly increased the composite storage moduli and elasticity, promoted the cold crystallization and recrystallization of PLA, and dramatically improved composite tensile moduli and strengths. The highest composite tensile strength achieved was 121 MPa, nearly one fold higher than that of the neat PLA. The overall fiber efficiency factors for composite tensile strengths derived from the micromechanics models were found to be much higher than that of conventional random short fiber-reinforced composites, suggesting the fiber–fiber bond also positively contributed to the composites’ strengths.  相似文献

In this study the chemical treatment of sisal fiber using the combined alkali (NaOH) and clay is discussed. The purpose of this fiber treatment is to improve the fiber–matrix compatibility, interface strength, mechanical, thermal and water barrier properties. The phase change due to chemical treatment of raw sisal fiber was examined by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The result shows the presence of about 20 wt.% clays in NaOH–clay treated sisal fiber with 2.6× reduced water uptake and also with improved mechanical and thermal properties. Subsequently the treated and untreated fibers were reinforced in polypropylene (PP) matrix and the mechanical and thermal properties were examined. The result indicates that the fiber–matrix interface strength, adhesion, glass transition temperature and tensile properties of composites were improved in NaOH–clay treated fiber composites.  相似文献

The degree of fiber–matrix adhesion and its effect on the mechanical reinforcement of short henequen fibers and a polyethylene matrix was studied. The surface treatments were: an alkali treatment, a silane coupling agent and the pre-impregnation process of the HDPE/xylene solution. The presence of Si–O–cellulose and Si–O–Si bonds on the lignocellulosic surface confirmed that the silane coupling agent was efficiently held on the fibres surface through both condensation with cellulose hydroxyl groups and self-condensation between silanol groups.

The fiber–matrix interface shear strength (IFSS) was used as an indicator of the fiber–matrix adhesion improvement, and also to determine a suitable value of fiber length in order to process the composite with relative ease. It was noticed that the IFSS observed for the different fiber surface treatments increased and such interface strength almost doubled only by changing the mechanical interaction and the chemical interactions between fiber and matrix.

HDPE-henequen fiber composite materials were prepared with a 20% v/v fiber content and the tensile, flexural and shear properties were studied. The comparison of tensile properties of the composites showed that the silane treatment and the matrix-resin pre-impregnation process of the fiber produced a significant increase in tensile strength, while the tensile modulus remained relatively unaffected. The increase in tensile strength was only possible when the henequen fibers were treated first with an alkaline solution. It was also shown that the silane treatment produced a significant increase in flexural strength while the flexural modulus also remained relatively unaffected. The shear properties of the composites also increased significantly, but, only when the henequen fibers were treated with the silane coupling agent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies of the composites failure surfaces also indicated that there is an improved adhesion between fiber and matrix. Examination of the failure surfaces also indicated differences in the interfacial failure mode. With increasing fiber–matrix adhesion the failure mode changed from interfacial failure and considerable fiber pull-out from the matrix for the untreated fiber to matrix yielding and fiber and matrix tearing for the alkaline, matrix-resin pre-impregnation and silane treated fibers.  相似文献

A valid strategy to tailor the properties of polylactic acid for more extensive applications was introducing filler. In this work, basalt fiber assembled with in-situ SiO2 nanoparticles on the surface was successfully prepared via hydrothermal method and it was further treated with coupling agent KH-550 to improve interfacial interaction between polylactic acid(PLA)and basalt fibers(BF).It was demonstrated that the introduction of BFS could increase the crystallization of PLA and resulted in forming trans-crystallization based on TG and DSC results. The tensile strength of PLA/BF composites raised from 39 MPa to 62.5 MPa with increasing the fiber loading from 1 wt%to 10 wt%.Furthermore, the interfacial interaction could be effectively improved by assembling SiO2(especially with 250 nm in diameter)on BF surface to build mechanical locking, which could keep the PLA matrix in place during the mechanical deformation with the tensile strength value raised from 62.5 MPa to 74.0 MPa.It is noticeable that the impact and flexural properties were effectively increased with the incorporation of in-situ SiO2 nanoparticles. The further KH-550 treatment made a positive impact as well. For instance, the impact strength and flexural strength of the sample with SiO2 and KH-550 modification were improved to 22.49 kJ/m2 and 146.83 MPa and it enhanced about 42.16%and 41.04%than those of neat PLA,respectively. Therefore,an efficient enhancement of mechanical performance was achieved and this concept of assembling in-situ SiO2 on silica-based fiber as a modifier was a novel and simple path to design the interfacial construction and properties of the polymer composites.  相似文献

By engineering the fiber/matrix interface, the properties of the composite can be changed significantly. In this work, we increased the effective surface area of the fiber/matrix interface, to facilitate additional stress transfer between fibers and matrix, by grafting carbon nanotubes on to carbon fibers (in the form of carbon fabric) by two different methods: (1) chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and (2) a purely chemical method. With the CVD process, carbon nanotubes (CNT) were directly grown on carbon fiber substrate using chemical vapors. For the chemical method, CNT with carboxyl groups were grafted on functionalized carbon fiber via a chemical reaction. The morphology of CNT/carbon fibers was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) which revealed uniform coverage of carbon fibers with CNT in both of CVD method and chemical grafting method. CNT-grafted woven carbon fibers were used to make carbon/epoxy composites, and their mechanical properties were measured using three-point bending and tension tests which showed that those with CNT-grafted carbon fiber reinforcements using the CVD process has 11 % higher tensile strength compared to those containing carbon fibers modified with the chemical method. Also, composites with CNT-grafted carbon fibers with chemical method showed 20 % higher tensile strength compared to composites with unmodified carbon fibers. The results of tensile test revealed that both CVD and chemical grafting could significantly improve the mechanical properties of the carbon fiber composites.  相似文献

A simple and effective modification for carbon fiber (CF) was presented in our work. CF was coated with ethylene–methyl acrylate–glycidyl methacrylate (E–MA–GMA) terpolymer through solution dipping. A uniform layer of 2.0 wt.% E–MA–GMA was confirmed on CF by IR, TGA and SEM. XPS showed that surface oxygen-containing functional groups were obviously increased after modification, which were advantageous to promote the reactivity of CFs. The treatment turned out to be helpful in enhancing the interfacial adhesion by micro-droplet experiment and the interfacial shear strength was 157% higher. The physical properties of PP/mCF composites were improved by static and dynamic mechanical analysis and the improvement was more noteworthy when maleic anhydride grafted PP (MAPP) was added to the matrix, which was consistent with the fracture morphology. The ultimate flexural strength, impact energy and tensile strength were increased by 139.3%, 233.9% and 126.1%. Besides, the mechanical performance of PP composites with 0–30 wt.% CFs were all significantly enhanced by CF surface treatment in combination with MAPP modification. We believed that the excellent performance was not caused by fiber length or crystallinity, it was mainly due to the superior interfacial interaction by intermolecular chain entanglement, as well as chemical reaction between E–MA–GMA and MAPP.  相似文献

The fracture surface morphology of short fiber reinforced thermoplastics (SFRTs) has often been used to assess qualitatively the degree of fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, fracture toughness and failure strain, etc. are then correlated with the morphology. Fracture surfaces showing fibers surrounded by a large amount of matrix material is commonly regarded as indication of strong fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion while smooth fibers are characteristic of weak interfacial adhesion. Many experimental results of SFRTs have been so interpreted. However, it is shown in this paper that strictly speaking, such interpretations are generally incorrect. Moreover, the amount of matrix material does not provide a quantitative measure of the adhesion. Correct implication of the morphology of fracture surfaces is clarified. Short glass fiber reinforced polyamide 6,6/polypropylene (PA 6,6/PP) blends toughened by rubber are employed as examples for SFRTs since the PA 6,6/PP blend system by changing PA 6,6 concentration in the matrix blend represents a wide range of matrix materials. It is demonstrated that the fracture surface morphology of such composites is dependent on both fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion strength and matrix shear yield strength. Consequently, tensile failure strain is well correlated with the post-mortem fracture surface morphology of these SFRTs.  相似文献

Environment-friendly fiber-reinforced composites were fabricated using ramie fibers and soy protein isolate (SPI) and were characterized for their interfacial and mechanical properties. Ramie fibers were characterized for their tensile properties and the parameters for the Weibull distribution were estimated. Effect of glycerol content on the tensile properties of SPI was studied. Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was determined using the microbond technique. Based on the IFSS results and fiber strength distribution, three different fiber lengths and fiber weight contents (FWC) were chosen to fabricate short fiber-reinforced composites. The results indicate that the fracture stress increases with increase in fiber length and fiber weight content. Glycerol was found to increase the fracture strain and reduce the resin fracture stress and modulus as a result of plasticization. For 10% (w/w) of 5 mm long fibers, no significant reinforcement effect was observed. In fact the short fibers acted as flaws and led to reduction in the tensile properties. On further increasing the fiber length and FWC, a significant increase in the Young's modulus and fracture stress and decrease in fracture strain was observed as the fibers started to control the tensile properties of the composites. The experimental data were compared to the theoretical predictions made using Zweben's model. The experimental results are lower than the predicted values for a variety of reasons. However, the two values get closer with increasing fiber length and FWC.  相似文献

The effects of fiber surface treatment on ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of unidirectional (UD) epoxy resin matrix composites are examined experimentally. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and statistical fiber strength are significantly altered by five different kinds of surface treatments, which are: (a) unsized and untreated; (b) γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-GPS); (c) γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS); (d) mixture of γ-aminoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-APS), film former (urethane) and lubricant (paraffin); and (e) urethane-sized. The maximum UTS is obtained for the relatively strong interfacial adhesion (glass/γ-MPS/epoxy) but not for the strongest interfacial adhesion (glass/γ-GPS/epoxy). The governing micro-damage mode around a broken fiber and the interface region is matrix cracking for γ-GPS treated fibers, and a combination of interfacial debonding and matrix cracking for γ-MPS treated fibers. The micro-damage mode related to the interfacial adhesion strongly affects the fracture process, and thus the UTS of UD composites. The results also indicate that the interfacial adhesion can be optimized for effective utilization of fiber strength for fiber composites. A parameter called “efficiency ratio” of fiber strength in UD composites is proposed to examine and distinguish different effects of IFSS and fiber strength on the UTS of UD composites. The experimental results show that improved UTS of UD composites due to surface treatments mainly result from the increase in fiber strength but not from the modified interface.  相似文献

Abaca fibers demonstrate enormous potential as reinforcing agents in composite materials. In this study, abaca fibers were immersed in 5, 10 or 15 wt.% NaOH solutions for 2 h, and the effects of the alkali treatments on the mechanical characteristics and interfacial adhesion of the fibers in a model abaca fiber/epoxy composite system systematically evaluated. After 5 wt.% NaOH treatment, abaca fibers showed increased crystallinity, tensile strength and Young’s modulus compared to untreated fibers, and also improved interfacial shear strength with an epoxy. Stronger alkali treatments negatively impacted fiber stiffness and suitability for composite applications. Results suggest that mild alkali treatments (e.g. 5 wt.% NaOH for 2 h) are highly beneficial for the manufacture of abaca fiber-reinforced polymer composites.  相似文献

An experimental study of the incorporation of non-fluorinated and fluorinated Twaron fibers in polypropylene (PP) is presented. Surface modifications were made to Twaron fiber by direct fluorination technique using elemental fluorine in order to improve the interfacial adhesion between the fiber and matrix. Composites of PP/Twaron fiber (both Fluorinated and non-fluorinated) with 0.6%, 1.25%, 5% and 10% of Twaron fibers (w/w) were prepared by a solution method. Mechanical behaviour was estimated by the measurement of the tensile strength. The mechanical properties of PP improve significantly with the incorporation of Twaron fibers and fluorinated fiber composites show superior mechanical properties compared to the non-fluorinated system. The morphology was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), showing good dispersion of the fibers. The thermal and crystallization behaviour of PP/Twaron fiber composites were studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of fiber content and fiber surface treatments on the thermal properties was evaluated. DSC analysis exhibited an increase in the crystallization temperature and crystallinity, melting temperature upon the addition of fluorinated fibers to the PP matrix. This is attributed to the nucleating effects of the fiber surfaces. Also the thermal stability (from TG) and surface energy (determined from contact angle measurement) increased for fluorinated fiber composites. Surface modification of Twaron fibers leads to improved adhesion with the PP matrix and hence an improvement in properties of the Twaron fiber-PP composites.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of newly developed aspen fiber–polypropylene composites (APC) were experimentally explored and numerically predicted at the temperatures and humidity that are typical for domestic housing applications. The mechanical properties of APCs with five different fiber-loadings were evaluated at the room temperature, 4 °C, and 40 °C. Environmental effects on the mechanical properties of APCS were experimentally quantified after conditioning the APCs with two different fiber-loadings in the following temperature and humidity for over 7000 h: (1) hot/dry at 40 °C and 30% relative humidity (RH), (2) hot/wet at 40 °C and 82% RH, (3) cold/dry at 4 °C and 30% RH, and (4) cold/wet at 4 °C and 82% RH. The tensile moduli, flexural moduli, and the flexural strength increased as the woodfiber content increased in the composites. However, the tensile strength decreased as the fiber content increased. The tensile strength was shown to slightly improve with an addition of a coupling agent between the aspen fibers and polypropylene. The simple empirical micromechanics Halpin–Tsai model for randomly distributed short fiber reinforced composites was employed to predict the homogenized elastic moduli of APC, by optimizing the interfacial model parameter. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs confirmed that an addition of the adhesion promoter maleated anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) between the aspen fibers and polymeric matrix improved the interfacial bonding.  相似文献

This work reports on the properties of high density polyethylene based hybrid composites made with two natural fibers: agave and pine. The composites were produced by a combination of extrusion and injection molding. The effect of hybridization was analyzed via morphological, mechanical and water immersion tests for two total fiber contents, 20 and 30 wt.%, and different pine-agave fiber ratios (100–0, 80–20, 60–40, 40–60 and 0–100). Moreover, the effect of coupling agent (maleated polyethylene) in the hybrid composite formulation was evaluated. The results showed that addition of agave fibers improves tensile, flexural and impact strength, while pine fibers decreases water uptake. As expected, the addition of a coupling agent improves substantially the quality of the polymer–fiber interface as well as the mechanical properties, but this effect was more important for composites produced with higher agave fibers content due to the their chemical composition.  相似文献
