The effect of fiber loading on the properties of treated cellulose fiber-reinforced phenolic composites was evaluated. Alkali treatment of the fibers and reaction with organosilanes as coupling agents were applied to improve fiber–matrix adhesion. Fiber loadings of 1, 3, 5, and 7 wt% were incorporated to the phenolic matrix and tensile, flexural, morphological and thermal properties of the resulting composites were studied. In general, mechanical properties of the composites showed a maximum at 3% of fiber loading and a uniform distribution of the fibers in such composites was observed. Silane treatment of the fibers provided derived composites with the best thermal and mechanical properties. Meanwhile, NaOH treatment improved thermal and flexural properties, but reduced tensile properties of the materials. Therefore, the phenolic composite containing 3% of silane treated cellulose fiber was selected as the material with optimal properties.  相似文献

Epoxy resins often exhibit high strength yet are often brittle, especially at high strain rates. Block copolymer modified epoxy resins have generated significant interest since it was demonstrated that the combination could lead to nanostructured thermosets through the self-assembly of the block copolymer. Such nanostructured epoxies exhibit increased ductility without the significant loss in yield strength exhibited by traditional rubber-modified epoxies. In this study, the effect of different nanoscale additives on the compressive yield strength of a model epoxy resin has been studied. In the first case, a block copolymer styrene-b-butadiene-b-polymethylmethacrylate (SBM) was added to the model epoxy resin. In the second case, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were added. In the final case, both additives were mixed simultaneously with the epoxy resin. The compressive mechanical behavior of these materials has been investigated over a wide range of strain rates (0.001–3500 s−1). The yield behavior was found to fit the cooperative yield model proposed by Fotheringham and Cherry.  相似文献

The effect of adding graphene in epoxy containing either an additive (MP) or reactive-type (DOPO) flame retardant on the thermal, mechanical and flammability properties of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites was investigated using thermal analysis; flexural, impact, tensile tests; cone calorimetry and UL-94 techniques. The addition of MP or DOPO to epoxy had a thermal destabilization effect below 400 °C, but led to higher char yield at higher temperatures. The inclusion of 10 wt% flame retardants slightly decreased the mechanical behavior, which was attributed to the poor interfacial interactions in case of MP or the decreased cross-linking density in case of DOPO flame retarded resin. The additional graphene presence increased flexural and impact properties, but slightly decreased tensile performance. Adding graphene further decreased the PHRR, THR and burning rate due to its good barrier effect. The improved fire retardancy was mainly attributed to the reduced release of the combustible gas products.  相似文献

By incorporating graphene oxide (GO) into phenolic resin (PR), GO/PR composites were prepared, and the effects of the content and reduction degree of GO on thermal resistance of GO/PR composites were studied. The peak degradation temperature of the PR was increased by about 14 °C with GO which was heat treated. The char yield of GO/PR composite at a GO weight fraction of 0.5% was about 11% greater than that of PR. The interactions such as covalent bonds and π–π stacking between GO and PR were regarded as the main reason for the enhancement. Located at the GO–PR interface, GO effectively anchored and structured PR molecular near the surfaces of GO sheets, and thus facilitated the formation of char. The superiority of GO/PR composites over PR in terms of thermal properties enhancement should also be related to the promoting graphitization by the addition of GO.  相似文献

In this study, we investigate how multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) affect the in-plane shear mechanical behavior of glass fiber/epoxy composite. These multi-scale composites are fabricated using vacuum infusion: pristine MWCNT and amino-functionalized MWCNT are incorporated into epoxy resins at concentrations of both 0.1 and 0.3 wt.% and are subsequently evaluated. The MWCNT are mixed into the resins by mechanical stirring and sonication prior to resin infusion, and the MWCNT distribution in the cured laminate is then evaluated by performing a heat conduction assessment. Monotonic and cyclic quasi-static room temperature in-plane shear tests are performed following the ASTM D 4255 standard. The initial shear modulus, the deterioration of the shear modulus during plastic deformation and material hardening are evaluated. Incorporating MWCNT into the resins did not affect the parameters investigated under the imposed conditions.  相似文献

Ramie/PLA composites with the diisocyanates as compatibilizer were fabricated by extrusion and injection molding. The influence of different diisocyanates and various diisocyanate content on the mechanical properties and thermal properties of the composites was investigated. The presence of the diisocyanates in the composites lead to the improvements in mechanical properties and thermal properties of the composites. The morphologies of fracture surface using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provided evidence of improved interfacial adhesion between ramie and PLA from the addition of the diisocyanates. The composites containing isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) showed the best mechanical properties. The comparison of various IPDI content showed that the composites with 1.5% IPDI could get the optimum mechanical properties, and the excess diisocyanate content resulted in the decrease in the mechanical properties of the composites. However, IPDI content had almost no effect on the crystallization and melting behavior of the ramie/PLA composites.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of thermal ageing on low velocity impact response of E-glass/epoxy composites was investigated. Together with single impact case, repeated impact response of the composite samples was also investigated. Impact energies were chosen as 20 J, 40 J, 60 J, 80 J and 100 J for single impact tests while 20 J was chosen for repeated impact tests. The test coupons were cut out from composite panels with stacking sequence of [0/90]4S and the dimensions of the specimens were 100 mm × 100 mm, with the nominal thickness of 4.2 mm. The conditioning humidity and temperature were chosen respectively as 70% and 95 °C, considering the glass-transition temperature (Tg) of the intact composites which was determined as 78 °C. The samples were exposed to ageing durations of 100, 400, 700, 1000 and 1300 h by using a climatic test cabin. Along with images of damaged samples, variations of the impact characteristics such as absorbed energy, maximum contact force, maximum deflection and contact duration for successive impacts until perforation of the samples are provided. As a result of the study it is found that in addition to the mechanical properties, damage resistance of the E-glass/epoxy composites is significantly affected by the thermal ageing.  相似文献

Short ramie fiber reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites without and with maleic anhydride (MA) were developed. The influence of PLA-g-MA as a compatibilizer on the properties of the composites was studied. The tensile, flexural and impact strength of the composites have improvements with the addition of PLA-g-MA. The morphology of fracture surface evaluated by SEM indicates that the composites with the addition of PLA-g-MA can get better adhesion between the fiber and the matrix. And the Vicat softening temperature and the degradation temperature of the composites are increased with the addition of PLA-g-MA. However, PLA-g-MA leads the glass transition temperature (Tg) decrease according to the DSC results.  相似文献

This work expands a recently developed short-beam method coupled with the Digital Image Correlation full-field surface deformation measurement technique to enable assessment of the interlaminar tensile stress–strain constitutive properties of polymer–matrix composite materials. This work also expands the American Society for Testing and Materials Standard D 6415 curved-beam method as another means for measurement of the interlaminar tensile stress–strain constitutive behavior. The interlaminar tensile modulus values resulting from both methods are compared for Hexcel IM7/8552 carbon/epoxy tape composite material system.  相似文献

Unidirectional flax fiber reinforced composites (FFRC) were made by hot press. Effects of processing parameters, including curing pressure, time and temperature on the distribution, shape and content of the voids formed during the manufacturing process of FFRC were investigated. The voids were characterized with the aid of ultrasonic C-scan and optical microscopy. Tensile and interlaminar shear properties of FFRC containing different content and shape of the voids were tested. The results showed that the voids were easily trapped in both the intralaminar and inside the flax yarns of FFRC due to the distinct structural characteristics of flax fibers. The relationships between voids and mechanical properties of the composites were established.  相似文献

A flame retardant efficiency of flame retardants; ammonium polyphosphate (APP), magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), zinc borate (Zb), and combination of APP with Mg(OH)2 and Zb in sisal fiber/polypropylene (PP) composites was investigated using a horizontal burning test and a vertical burning test. In addition, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a compatibilizer to enhance the compatibility in the system; i.e. PP-fiber and PP-flame retardants. Thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of the PP composites were also studied. Adding the flame retardants resulted in improved flame retardancy and thermal stability of the PP composites without deterioration of their mechanical properties. APP and combination of APP with Zb effectively enhanced flame retardancy of the PP composites. No synergistic effect was observed when APP was used in combination with Mg(OH)2. SEM micrographs of PP composites revealed good distribution of flame retardants in PP matrix and good adhesion between sisal fiber and PP matrix.  相似文献

The interfacial properties of epoxy composites reinforced with a single, plasma-treated fibre of either poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) (PPTA) or poly(p-phenylenebenzobisoxazole) (PBO) have been investigated with a focus on evaluating the effect of two non-oxidative (He and N2) microwave plasma treatments on interfacial adhesion properties. Tensile testing of single filaments revealed that their tensile strength does not diminish with the plasma treatments, despite the fact that their surface properties have been both physically and chemically modified. Interfacial characterisation by Raman spectroscopy indicated that the quality of adhesion was substantially enhanced following exposure of the fibres to microwave plasma treatment in either pure helium or pure nitrogen flows for just one minute. Such improvement was higher than that attained when O2 was used for blowing the plasma, under the same operational conditions. Moreover, no swelling effect was observed by AFM after exposure of the He or N2 plasma-treated fibres to ambient conditions for as much as 24 h.  相似文献

Composites based on epoxy resin and differently aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) sheets have been developed using hot-melt prepreg processing. Aligned MWCNT sheets were produced from MWCNT arrays using the drawing and winding technique. Wavy MWCNTs in the sheets have limited reinforcement efficiency in the composites. Therefore, mechanical stretching of the MWCNT sheets and their prepregs was conducted for this study. Mechanical stretching of the MWCNT sheets and hot stretching of the MWCNT/epoxy prepregs markedly improved the mechanical properties of the composites. The improved mechanical properties of stretched composites derived from the increased MWCNT volume fraction and the reduced MWCNT waviness caused by stretching. With a 3% stretch ratio, the MWCNT/epoxy composites achieved their best mechanical properties in this study. Although hot stretching of the prepregs increased the tensile strength and modulus of the composites considerably, its efficiency was lower than that of stretching the MWCNT sheets.  相似文献

Comparison of some changes occurring in polylactide (PLA) due to its modification by glass filler being in the form of microspheres (GM) was the objective of the present study. Mechanical and thermal properties, density, mass flow rate, and were determined. In addition, there were examined surface free energy and changes in the surface geometrical structure of sample fractures. It was found that PLA as modified with GM exhibited the enhanced longitudinal modulus of elasticity, flexural modulus, and mass flow rate. The impact strength and flexural strength did not change. The tensile strength and tensile strain at break decreased. The used glass filler did not affect essentially the thermal properties of PLA. The prepared composites exhibited uniform distribution of the dispersed phase in the polymer matrix and adequate adhesion at the interface between the two components. Substantial changes in the properties of the surface layer were observed, mainly in surface free energy.  相似文献

Rapidly increasing packaging density of electronic devices puts forward higher requirements for thermal conductivity of glass fibers reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites, which are commonly used as substrates in printed circuit board. Interface between fillers and polymer matrix has long been playing an important role in affecting thermal conductivity. In this paper, the effect of interfacial state on the thermal conductivity of functionalized Al2O3 filled GFRP composites was evaluated. The results indicated that amino groups-Al2O3 was demonstrated to be effective filler to fabricate thermally conductive GFPR composite (1.07 W/m K), compared with epoxy group and graphene oxide functionalized Al2O3. It was determined that the strong adhesion at the interface and homogeneous dispersion of filler particles were the key factors. Moreover, the effect of interfacial state on dielectric and thermomechanical properties of GFRP composites was also discussed. This research provides an efficient way to develop high-performance GFRP composites with high thermal conductivity for integrated circuit packaging applications.  相似文献

Thermoplastic elastomer tri-block copolymer, namely styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) composites filled with carbon nanotubes (CNT) are characterized with the main goal of obtaining electro-mechanical composites suitable for large deformation sensor applications. CNT/SBS composites with different filler contents and filler functionalizations are studied by morphological, thermal, mechanical and electrical analyses. It is shown that the different dispersion levels of CNT in the SBS matrix are achieved for pristine or functionalized CNT with strong influence in the electrical properties of the composites. In particular covalently functionalized CNTs show percolation thresholds higher than 8 weight percentage (wt%) whereas pristine CNT show percolation threshold smaller than 1 wt%. On the other hand, CNT functionalization does not alter the conduction mechanism which is related to hopping between the CNT for concentrations higher than the percolation threshold.Pristine single and multiwall CNT within the SBS matrix allow the preparation of composites with electro-mechanical properties appropriate for strain sensors for deformations up to 5% of strain, the gauge factor varying between 2 and 8. Composites close to the percolation threshold show larger values of the gauge factor.  相似文献

Carboxyl terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) was added to epoxy resins to improve the fracture toughness, and then two different lateral dimensions of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs), nominally <1 μm (GnP-C750) and 5 μm (GnP-5) in diameter, were individually incorporated into the CTBN/epoxy to fabricate multi-phase composites. The study showed that GnP-5 is more favorable for enhancing the properties of CTBN/epoxy. GnPs/CTBN/epoxy ternary composites with significant toughness and thermal conductivity enhancements combined with comparable stiffness to that of the neat resin were successfully achieved by incorporating 3 wt.% GnP-5 into 10 wt.% CTBN modified epoxy resins. According to the SEM investigations, GnP-5 debonding from the matrix is suppressed due to the presence of CTBN. Nevertheless, apart from rubber cavitation and matrix shear banding, additional active toughening mechanisms induced by GnP-5, such as crack deflection, layer breakage and separation/delamination of GnP-5 layers contributed to the enhanced fracture toughness of the hybrid composites.  相似文献

Aluminum oxide and aluminum nitride with different sizes were used alone or in combination to prepare thermally conductive polymer composites. The composites were categorized into two systems, one including composites filled with large-sized aluminum nitride and small-sized aluminum oxide particles, and the other including composites filled with large-sized aluminum oxide and small-sized aluminum nitride. The use of these hybrid fillers was found to be effective for increasing the thermal conductivity of the composite, which was probably due to the enhanced connectivity offered by the structuring filler. At a total filler content of 58.4 vol.%, the maximum values of both thermal conductivities in the two systems were 3.402 W/mK and 2.842 W/mK, respectively, when the volume ratio of large particles to small particles was 7:3. This result was represented when the composite was filled with the maximum packing density and the minimum surface area at the same volume content. As such, the proposed thermal model predicted thermal conductivity in good agreement with experimental values.  相似文献

The flame retardant and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) composites filled with microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) and magnesium hydrate (Mg(OH)2)/aluminum hydrate (Al(OH)3) were measured. It was found that the synergistic effects between the MRP and Mg(OH)2/Al(OH)3 on the flame retardant and tensile properties of the composites were significant. The limit oxygen index and smoke density rank of the composites increased nonlinearly while the horizontal combustibility rate decreased nonlinearly with increasing the MRP weight fraction. The Young modulus and the tensile elongation at break increased while the tensile yield strength and tensile fracture strength decreased slightly with increasing the MRP weight fraction. Both the V-notched Izod and Charpy impact strength increased with increasing the MRP weight fraction. Moreover, the tensile yield strength of the composites estimated using an equation published previously was roughly close to the measured data.  相似文献

Two experimental approaches were employed to assess the fibre/matrix adhesion between polymer threads and epoxy resin by transverse fibre bundle (TFB) tests. The first approach was to measure interfacial bonding strength of the fibre/matrix interface in dog-bone-shaped tensile specimens by applying normal stress until failure, simulating the Mode I failure mode. The second approach was to determine the fibre/epoxy interfacial bonding strength in shear (simulating the Mode II failure mode) by means of a V-notched beam shear testing method, i.e. a modified Iosipescu test. In both methods, polymer threads were transversely incorporated in the middle section of the specimens. It was found that both methods were simple, reliable, and sensitive to changes in the fibre/matrix adhesion conditions, though interpretation of the test results was somewhat complex. The two experimental approaches were able to produce consistent results and can thus be adopted as alternative methods for determining the interfacial bonding properties between fibres and matrix in composite systems where conventional micro-mechanical or macro-mechanical testing methods cannot be used.  相似文献
