Cognitively challenging activities may support the mental abilities of older adults. The use of computers and the Internet provides divergent cognitive challenges to older persons, and in previous studies, positive effects of computer and Internet use on the quality of life have been demonstrated. The present study addresses two research aims regarding predictors of computer use and the relationship between computer use and changes in cognitive abilities over a 6-year period in both younger (24-49 years) and older adults (older than 50 years). Data were obtained from an ongoing study into cognitive aging: the Maastricht Aging Study, involving 1823 normal aging adults who were followed for 9 years. The results showed age-related differences in predictors of computer use: the only predictor in younger participants was level of education, while in older participants computer use was also predicted by age, sex and feelings of loneliness. Protective effects of computer use were found for measures of selective attention and memory, in both older and younger participants. Effect sizes were small, which suggests that promotion of computer activities in older adults to prevent cognitive decline may not be an efficient strategy.  相似文献

The ability to elicit requirements in the design of new technology has proved to be particularly problematic with older generations of users who have not grown up with the same level of familiarity and understanding of present day user interfaces as younger generations have. It is also widely acknowledged that older people are poorly represented in the development process of mainstream technology. In this paper, we critically examine how 'Forum Theatre' can be used as a requirements gathering methodology in the development of a novel digital television (DTV) based communication system. We demonstrate how live theatre established a 'common ground' between audience participants and actors in the facilitation of new ideas, and discuss how live theatre can be used to stimulate interest and understanding from designers and relevant professionals in the development of an unfamiliar and largely undefined technology for older adults.  相似文献

We consider the recently developed reconfigurable digital data networks consisting of T1/T3 circuits and Digital Crossconnect Systems (DCSs). A DCS is a device to patch base channels electronically from one T1/T3 circuit to another with a negligible queuing delay at the connecting node. We present new decision models for the design and circuit leasing policies of such digital backbone networks. Our model takes advantage of the special capabilities of the DCS technology and is likely to result in remarkable economic gains for the private network users. The formulation and analyses presented here simultaneously address the following problems: physical link and capacity selection, logical network configuration and channel assignment, and traffic routing on the logical network. The problem formulation results in a large-scale non-linear mixed integer program, and we propose an efficient solution methodology employing Lagrangean relaxation and subgradient optimization. Several numerical results illustrate the utility of our approach for these complex problems. We show that the economies of scale built into the tariff structure of these digital networks can be successfully exploited, and that the inherent flexibility of DCSs leads to logical networks that are dramatically different from their underlying physical topologies.  相似文献
