The objective of the present work is to investigate experimentally the thermal behavior of a packed bed of combined sensible and latent heat thermal energy storage (TES) unit. A TES unit is designed, constructed and integrated with constant temperature bath/solar collector to study the performance of the storage unit. The TES unit contains paraffin as phase change material (PCM) filled in spherical capsules, which are packed in an insulated cylindrical storage tank. The water used as heat transfer fluid (HTF) to transfer heat from the constant temperature bath/solar collector to the TES tank also acts as sensible heat storage (SHS) material. Charging experiments are carried out at constant and varying (solar energy) inlet fluid temperatures to examine the effects of inlet fluid temperature and flow rate of HTF on the performance of the storage unit. Discharging experiments are carried out by both continuous and batchwise processes to recover the stored heat. The significance of time wise variation of HTF and PCM temperatures during charging and discharging processes is discussed in detail and the performance parameters such as instantaneous heat stored and cumulative heat stored are also studied. The performance of the present system is compared with that of the conventional SHS system. It is found from the discharging experiments that the combined storage system employing batchwise discharging of hot water from the TES tank is best suited for applications where the requirement is intermittent.  相似文献

In this paper, exergy modeling is used to assess the exergetic performance of a novel trigeneration system using parabolic trough solar collectors (PTSC) and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). Four cases are considered: electrical-power, cooling-cogeneration, heating-cogeneration, and trigeneration. In this trigeneration system a single-effect absorption chiller is utilized to provide the necessary cooling energy and a heat exchanger is utilized to provide the necessary heating energy. The trigeneration system considered is examined using three modes of operation. They are: solar mode during the low-solar radiation time of the day, solar and storage mode during the high-solar radiation time of the day, and storage mode during night time. The storage mode is operated through the heat collected in a thermal storage tank during the solar and storage mode. The exergy efficiencies and exergy destruction rates are examined under the variation of the ORC evaporator pinch point temperature, ORC pump inlet temperature, and turbine inlet pressure. This study reveals that the maximum electrical-exergy efficiency for the solar mode is 7%, for the solar and storage mode is 3.5%, and for the storage mode is 3%. Alternatively, when trigeneration is used, the exergy efficiency increases noticeably. The maximum trigeneration-exergy efficiency for the solar mode is 20%, for solar and storage mode is 8%, and for the storage mode is 7%. Moreover, this study shows that the main sources of exergy destruction rate are the solar collectors and ORC evaporators. Therefore, careful selection and design of these two components are essential to reduce the exergy destructed by them and, thus, increase the exergy efficiencies of the system.  相似文献

The exergetic efficiency of heat receiver in solar thermal power system is optimized by considering the heat loss outside the receiver and fluid viscous dissipation inside the receiver. The physical models of heat loss and pumping power consumption for solar heat receiver are first proposed, and associated exergetic efficiency is further induced. As the flow velocity rises, the pumping power consumption and heat absorption efficiency significantly rises, and the maximum absorption efficiency and optimal incident energy flux also increase. Along the flow direction of solar receiver, the exergy flux increment and the flow exergy loss almost linearly increase, while the exergetic efficiency varies very slowly at high flow velocity. According to the exergetic efficiency loss from flow viscou’s dissipation, the exergetic efficiency of solar heat receiver will first increase and then decrease with the flow velocity. Because of the coupling effects of heat absorption efficiency and exergetic efficiency from fluid internal energy, the exergetic efficiency of solar heat receiver will approach to the maximum at proper inlet temperature. As a result, the exergetic efficiency of solar heat receiver will reach the maximum at optimal inlet temperature, incident energy flux and flow velocity.  相似文献

A very small oil-in-glass tube thermal energy storage (TES) system is designed to allow for rapid heat transfer experiments. An electrical hot plate in thermal contact with a steel spiral coil (SSC) is used to charge the TES system under different hot plate temperatures and under different average charging flow rates. Thermal performance during charging is presented in terms of the axial temperature distribution, the axial degree of thermal stratification, the total energy stored and the total exergy stored. The energy and exergy delivery rates of the energy delivery device (EDD) are also evaluated in relation to the thermal performance of the storage system. Results of charging the storage system under different hot plate temperatures indicate that there is an optimal charging temperature for optimal thermal performance. The results also indicate that exceeding this optimal temperature leads to a degradation of the thermal performance due to increased heat losses. Charging at the same temperature conditions under different flow rate regimes suggests that there is an optimal charging flow rate. This optimal flow rate is a compromise between achieving a greater heat transfer rate in the EDD and achieving a greater degree of thermal stratification in the TES system.  相似文献

Analysis of energy and exergy has been performed for a latent heat storage system with phase change material (PCM) for a flat-plate solar collector. CaCl2·6H2O was used as PCM in thermal energy storage (TES) system. The designed collector combines in single unit solar energy collection and storage. PCMs are stored in a storage tank, which is located under the collector. A special heat transfer fluid was used to transfer heat from collector to PCM. Exergy analysis, which is based on the second law of thermodynamics, and energy analysis, which is based on the first law, were applied for evaluation of the system efficiency for charging period. The analyses were performed on 3 days in October. It was observed that the average net energy and exergy efficiencies are 45% and 2.2%, respectively.  相似文献

In this experimental study, solar energy was stored daily using the volcanic material with the sensible heat technique. The external heat collection unit consisted of 27 m2 of south‐facing solar air collectors mounted at a 55° tilt angle. The dimensions of the packed‐bed heat storage unit were 6 × 2 × 0.6 m deep. The packed‐bed heat storage unit was built under the soil. The heat storage unit was filled with 6480 kg of volcanic material. Energy and exergy analyses were applied in order to evaluate the system efficiency. During the charging periods, the average daily rates of thermal energy and exergy stored in the heat storage unit were 1242 and 36.33 W, respectively. Since the rate of exergy depends on the temperature of the heat transfer fluid and surrounding, the rate of exergy increased as the difference between the inlet and outlet temperatures of the heat transfer fluid increased during the charging periods. It was found that the average daily net energy and exergy efficiencies in the charging periods were 39.7 and 2.03%, respectively. The average daily net energy efficiency of the heat storage system remained nearly constant during the charging periods. The maximum energy and exergy efficiencies of the heat storage system were 52.9 and 4.9%, respectively. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The development of efficient long-term heat storage systems could significantly increase the use of solar thermal energy for building heating. Among the different heat storage technologies, the absorption heat storage system seems promising for this application. To analyze the potential of this technology, a numerical model based on mass, species, energy, and exergy balances has been developed. The evolution over time of the storage imposes a transient approach. Simulations were performed considering temperature conditions close to those of a storage system used for space heating coupled to solar thermal collectors (as the heat source), with ground source heat exchangers (as the cold source). The transient behavior of the system was analyzed in both the charging and discharging phases. This analysis highlights the lowering of energetic and exergetic performance during both phases, and these phenomena are discussed. The thermal efficiency and the energy storage density of the system were determined, equal to 48.4 % and 263 MJ/m3, respectively. The exergetic efficiency is equal to 15.0 %, and the exergy destruction rate is 85.8 %. The key elements in terms of exergy destruction are the solution storage tank, the generator, and the absorber. The impact of using a solution heat exchanger (SHX) was studied. The risk of the solution crystallizing in the SHX was taken into account. With a SHX, the thermal efficiency of the system can reach 75 %, its storage density was 331 MJ/m3, and its exergetic efficiency and exergy destruction rate was 23.2 and 77.3 %, respectively.  相似文献

In the following work, a seasonal thermal energy storage using paraffin wax as a PCM with the latent heat storage technique was attempted to heat the greenhouse of 180 m2 floor area. The system consists mainly of five units: (1) flat plate solar air collectors (as heat collection unit), (2) latent heat storage (LHS) unit, (3) experimental greenhouse, (4) heat transfer unit and (5) data acquisition unit. The external heat collection unit consisted of 27 m2 of south facing solar air heaters mounted at a 55° tilt angle. The diameter and the total volume of the steel tank used as the latent heat storage unit were 1.7 m and 11.6 m3, respectively. The LHS unit was filled with 6000 kg of paraffin, equivalent to 33.33 kg of PCM per square meter of the greenhouse ground surface area. Energy and exergy analyses were applied in order to evaluate the system efficiency. The rate of heat transferred in the LHS unit ranged from 1.22 to 2.63 kW, whereas the rate of heat stored in the LHS unit was in the range of 0.65–2.1 kW. The average daily rate of thermal exergy transferred and stored in the LHS unit were 111.2 W and 79.9 W, respectively. During the experimental period, it was found that the average net energy and exergy efficiencies were 40.4% and 4.2%, respectively. The effect of the temperature difference of the heat transfer fluid at the inlet and outlet of the LHS unit on the computed values of the energy and exergy efficiency is evaluated during the charging period.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose an integrated system aiming for hydrogen production with by-products using geothermal power as a renewable energy source. In analyzing the system, an extensive thermodynamic model of the proposed system is developed and presented accordingly. In addition, the energetic and exergetic efficiencies and exergy destruction rates for the whole system and its parts are defined. Due to the significance of some parameters, the impacts of varying working conditions are also investigated. The results of the energetic and exergetic analyses of the integrated system show that the energy and exergy efficiencies are 39.46% and 44.27%, respectively. Furthermore, the system performance increases with the increasing geothermal source temperature and reference temperature while it decreases with the increasing pinch point temperature and turbine inlet pressure.  相似文献

Six different experimental thermal stratification evaluation parameters during charging for an oil/pebble-bed TES system are presented. The six parameters are the temperature distribution along the height of the storage tank at different time intervals, the charging energy efficiency, the charging exergy efficiency, the stratification number, the Reynolds number and the Richardson number. These parameters are evaluated under six different experimental charging conditions. Temperature distribution along the height of the storage tank at different time intervals and the stratification number are parameters found to describe thermal stratification quantitatively adequately. On the other-hand, the charging exergy efficiency and the Reynolds number give important information about describing thermal stratification qualitatively and should be used with care. The charging energy efficiency and the Richardson number have no clear relationship with thermal stratification.  相似文献

Parabolic trough collectors are the most mature technology for utilizing the solar energy in high temperature applications. The objective of this study is the thermal efficiency enhancement of the commercial parabolic collector IST-PTC by increasing the convective heat transfer coefficient between the working fluid and the absorber. There are two main factors which influence on this parameter, the working fluid type and the absorber geometry. For this reason three working fluids are investigated, thermal oil, thermal oil with nanoparticles and pressurized water. Moreover, a dimpled absorber tube with sine geometry is tested because this shape increases the heat transfer surface and increases the turbulence in the flow. The final results show that these two techniques improve the heat transfer coefficient and the thermal efficiency of the collector. More specifically, the use of nanofluids increases the collector efficiency by 4.25% while the geometry improvement increases the efficiency by 4.55%. Furthermore, collector parameters such as the heat loss coefficient, the exergetic efficiency, the pressure losses and the absorber temperature are presented for all the examined cases. The model is designed with Solidworks and is simulated by its flow simulation studio.  相似文献

The exergetic performance of concentrating type solar collector is evaluated and the parametric study is made using hourly solar radiation. The exergy output is optimized with respect to the inlet fluid temperature and the corresponding efficiencies are computed. Although most of the performance parameters, such as, the exergy output, exergetic and thermal efficiencies, stagnations temperature, inlet temperature, ambient temperature etc. increase as the solar intensity increases but the exergy output, exergetic and thermal efficiencies are found to be the increasing function of the mass flow rate for a given value of the solar intensity. The performance parameters, mentioned above, are found to be the increasing functions of the concentration ratio but the optimal inlet temperature and exergetic efficiency at high solar intensity are found to be the decreasing functions of the concentration ration. On the other hand, for low value of the solar intensity, the exergetic efficiency first increases and then decreases as the concentration ratio is increased. This is because of the reason that the radiation losses increase as the collection temperature and hence, the concentration ratio increases. Hence, for lower value of solar intensity, there is an optimal value of concentration ratio for a given mass flow rate at which the exergetic efficiency is optimal. Again it is also observed that the mass flow rate is a critical parameter for a concentrating type solar collector and should be chosen carefully.  相似文献

Cool thermal energy storage (CTES) is an advanced energy technology that has recently attracted increasing interest for industrial refrigeration applications such as process cooling, food preservation and building air conditioning systems. An experimental investigation on the performance of an industrial refrigeration system integrated with encapsulated phase change material (PCM)‐based CTES system is carried out in the present work. In the experimental set‐up a vertical storage tank is integrated with the evaporator of the vapour compression refrigeration system. Effect of the inlet temperature of heat transfer fluid (HTF) on the temperature variation of the PCM and the HTF in the storage tank and the performance parameters namely average rate of charging, energy stored, specific energy consumption (SEC) of the chiller with and without storage system are studied in detail. The effect of porosity variation in the storage tank is also studied. A 1°C decrease in evaporator temperature results in about 3–4% increase in SEC and 1°C decrease in condensing temperature leads to 2.25–3.25% decrease in SEC. The range of HTF inlet temperature and porosity values for optimum performance is reported. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

By combining heat and power generation, mini‐combined and micro‐combined heat and power systems (MCHP) provide an efficient, decentralised means of power generation that can complement the composition of the electricity generation mix. Dynamic tools capable of handling transient system behaviour are required to assess MCHP efficiency beyond a mere static analysis based on steady‐state design parameters. Using a simulation of a cogeneration system, we combine exergetic definitions for different operational system states to quantify the overall system efficiency continuously over the whole period of operation. The concept of exergy allows direct comparison of different forms of energy. A sensitivity analysis was performed where we quantified the effect on MCHP overall performance under varying engine rotational speed, thermal energy storage size and fluid storage temperature in a range of MCHP simulations. We found that the exergetic quantity of natural gas used by the MCHP decreased slightly at higher engine speeds (?2% to ?4%). While the total amount of electricity generated is almost constant across the range of different engine output, more thermal exergy (up to +21%) can be recovered when the engine is operating at elevated speeds. Furthermore, selection of specific optimal thermal storage fluid temperatures can aid in improving system efficiency. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A computational model of the transient thermal response of a packed bed of spheres containing a phase-change material (PCM) is presented. A one-dimensional separate phases formulation is used to develop a numerical analysis of the dynamic response of the bed which is subject to the flow of a heat transfer fluid, for arbitrary initial conditions and inlet fluid temperature temporal variations. Phase-change models are developed for both isothermal and nonisothermal melting behaviours. Axial thermal dispersion effects are modelled, including intraparticle conduction (Biot number) effects. Regenerative thermal storage applications involve flow reversals to recover the stored energy; this aspect of operation is included in the present model. Results from the model for a commercial sized thermal storage bed for both the energy storage and recovery periods are presented. Experimental measurements of transient temperature distributions in a randomly packed bed of uniform spheres containing a PCM for a step-change in inlet air temperature are reported for a range of Reynolds number.  相似文献

The thermodynamic performance of an industrial waste heat recovery‐based trigeneration system is studied through energy and exergy efficiency parameters. The effects of exhaust gas inlet temperature, process heat pressure, and ambient temperature on both energy and exergy efficiencies, and electrical to thermal energy ratio of the system are investigated. The energy efficiency increases while electrical to thermal energy ratio and exergy efficiency decrease with increasing exhaust gas inlet temperature. On the other hand, with the increase in process heat pressure, energy efficiency decreases but exergy efficiency and electrical to thermal energy ratio increase. The effect of ambient temperature is also observed due to the fact that with an increase in ambient temperature, energy and exergy efficiencies, and electrical to thermal energy ratio decrease slightly. These results clearly show that performance evaluation of trigeneration system based on energy analysis is not adequate and hence more meaningful evaluation must include exergy analysis. The present analysis contributes to further information on the role of exhaust gas inlet temperature, process heat pressure, ambient temperature influence on the performance of waste heat recovery‐based trigeneration from a thermodynamic point of view. Thermal energy storage is a key technology for the solar thermal power plants. This paper set up a single spiral heat storage tank using concrete as heat storage material and Cu-water nano-fluid as heat transfer fluid. In this paper, temperature distribution and the effects of the parameters i.e., inlet temperature and inlet velocity, on the charge time of the storage tank have been investigated based on numerical simulation. The results show that the charge time of the storage tank is about 72,000 s before the other factors have been changed. The charge time of the storage tank increases with the decrease of the inlet temperature and inlet velocity.  相似文献

The location of heat transfer pinch point in evaporator is the base of determining operating parameters of organic Rankine cycle (ORC). The physical mathematical model seeking the location of pinch point is established, by which, the temperature variations both of heat source and working fluid with UA can be obtained. Taking heat source with inlet temperature of 160 °C as example, the matching potentials between heat source and working fluid are revealed for subcritical and supercritical cycles with the determined temperature difference of pinch point. Thermal efficiency, exergy efficiency, work output per unit area and maximum work outputs are compared and analyzed based on the locations of heat transfer pinch point either. The results indicate that supercritical ORC has a better performance in thermal efficiency, exergy efficiency and work output while outlet temperature of heat source is low. Otherwise, subcritical performs better. Small heat transfer coefficient results in low value of work output per unit area for supercritical ORC. Introduction of IHX may reduce the optimal evaporating pressure, which has a great influence on heat source outlet temperature and superheat degree. The analysis may benefit the selection of operating parameters and control strategy of ORC.  相似文献

Thermal stratification in solar energy storage tanks plays an important role in enhancing the performance of solar domestic hot water systems. The mixing that occurs when hot fluid from the solar collector enters the top of the tank is detrimental to the stratification. Mathematical models that are used for system analysis must therefore be able to capture the effects of this inlet jet mixing in order to accurately predict system performance. This paper presents a computational study of the heat transfer and fluid flow in a thermal storage tank of a solar domestic hot water system with a vertical inlet under negative buoyant plume conditions. The effects of parameters such as the fluid inlet velocity and temperature as well as inlet pipe diameter on the thermal mixing were considered. The work culminated in the development of a one-dimensional empirical model capable of predicting the transient axial temperature distribution inside the thermal storage tank. Predictions from the new model were in good agreement with both experimental data and detailed computational fluid dynamics predictions.  相似文献
