Commonly used dicumyl peroxide (DCP) in combination with coagent, triallyl cyanurate (TAC), as a crosslinking agent is well acceptable for dynamically vulcanized rubber phase of thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs). However, it generally produces volatile decomposition products, which cause a typical unpleasant smell and a blooming phenomenon. In this work, influence of two types of multifunctional peroxides: 2,4‐diallyloxy‐6‐tert‐butylperoxy‐1,3,5‐triazine (DTBT) and 1‐(2‐tert‐butylperoxyisopropyl)‐3‐isopropenyl benzene (TBIB), on properties of TPVs based on epoxidized natural rubber (ENR)/polypropylene (PP) blends were investigated. The conventional peroxide/coagent combinations, i.e., DCP/TAC and tert‐butyl cumyl peroxide (TBCP)/α‐methyl styrene (α‐MeS) were also used to prepare the TPVs for a comparison purpose. The TPVs with multifunctional peroxide, DTBT, provided good mechanical properties and phase morphology of small dispersed vulcanized rubber domains in the PP matrix which were comparable with the DCP/TAC cured TPVs. However, the TPVs with TBIB/α‐MeS and TBCP/α‐MeS showed comparatively low values of the tensile properties as well as rather large phase morphology. The results were interpreted by three main factors: the kinetic aspects of the various peroxides, solubility parameters of respective peroxide/coagent combinations in the ENR and PP phases, and the tendency to form unpleasantly smelling byproducts. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The tensile properties and morphology of the polyolefin ternary blends of ethylenepropylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM), polypropylene and high density polyethylene were studied. Blends were prepared in a laboratory internal mixer where EPDM was cured in the presence of PP and HDPE under shear with dicumyl peroxide (DCP). For comparison, blends were also prepared from EPDM which was dynamically cured alone and blended with PP and HDPE later (cure–blend). The effect of DCP concentration, intensity of the shear mixing, and rubber/plastics composition was studied. The tensile strength and modulus increased with increasing DCP concentration in the blends of EPDM-rich compositions but decreased with increasing DCP concentration in blends of PP-rich compositions. In the morphological analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the small amount of EPDM acted as a compatibilizer to HDPE and PP. It was also revealed that the dynamic curing process could reduce the domain size of the crosslinked EPDM phase. When the EPDM forms the matrix, the phase separation effect becomes dominant between the EPDM matrix and PP or HDPE domain due to the crosslinking in the matrix.  相似文献

Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) are prepared by the dynamic vulcanization process, where crosslinking of an elastomer takes place during its melt mixing with a thermoplastic polymer under high shear. TPVs based on polypropylene (PP) with different grades of ethylene‐octene copolymers (EOC) were prepared with a coagent assisted peroxide crosslinking system. The effect of dynamic vulcanization and influence of various types and concentrations of peroxide were mainly studied on the basis of the mechanical, thermal, and morphological characteristics. Three structurally different peroxides, namely dicumyl peroxide (DCP), tert‐butyl cumyl peroxide (TBCP), and di‐tert‐butyl peroxy isopropyl benzene (DTBPIB) were investigated. The mechanical properties of the TPVs are primarily determined by the extent of crosslinking in the EOC and the degree of degradation in the PP phase. Among all peroxides used DCP gives best overall properties with low‐molecular‐weight EOC, whereas TBCP shows best property level with high‐molecular‐weight EOC‐based TPVs. These can be explained on the basis of the molecular characteristics of EOC and the nature of the peroxide used. Differential scanning calorimetery (DSC) and morphological analysis reveal that PP and EOC are a thermodynamically immiscible system. The melting endotherm was studied to determine the influence of various peroxides on crystallinity of the PP phase. Tensile fracture patterns were also analyzed to study the failure mechanism of the samples. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Silicone rubber/ethylene vinyl acetate (SR/EVA) rubber mixes with different ratios were prepared by using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and benzoyl peroxide (BP) as curing agents. The vulcanization characteristics such as cure kinetics, activation energy, and cure rate of the blends were analyzed. The effects of blend ratio and curing agents on the mechanical properties such as stress–strain behavior, tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength, relative volume loss, hardness, flex crack resistance, and density of the cured blends have been investigated. Almost all the mechanical properties have been found to be increased with increase in EVA content in the blends particularly in DCP‐cured systems. The increment in mechanical properties of the blends with higher EVA content has been explained in terms of the morphology of the blends, attested by scanning electron micrographs. Attempts have been made to compare the experimental results, from the evaluation of mechanical properties, with relevant theoretical models. The aging characteristics of the cured blends were also investigated and found that both the DCP‐ and BP‐cured blends have excellent water and thermal resistance. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The structure and properties of polyolefin blends of ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM) and polypropylene were studied. Blends were prepared in a laboratory internal mixer where EPDM was cured with PP under shear with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) at different shear conditions (blend–cure). Blends were also prepared for comparison from EPDM which were dynamically cured in the absence of PP and blended later (cure–blend). The effect of DCP concentration, intensity of the shear mixing, and rubber/plastic composition were studied. In blend–cure, the melt viscosity increased with increasing DCP concentration in blends of 75% EPDM and 25% PP, but it decreased with increasing DCP concentration in blends of 75% PP and 25% EPDM. In cure–blend, however, the melt viscosity increased with increasing DCP concentration for all compositions. The melt viscosity decreased with increasing intensity of the shear mixing presumably due to the formation of the smaller segregated microdomain of the crosslinked EPDM gels in both blend–cure and cure–blend materials. The crystallization rate was higher in EPDM/PP blends than in PP homopolymer. The crystallization rates for various blending conditions were also compared.  相似文献

The rheological properties and crystalline structure of the polyolefin ternary blends of EPDM/polypropylene/high density polyethylene were studied. Blends were prepared in a laboratory internal mixer by two different methods. In blend–cure process, blending and curing were performed simultaneously and EPDM was cured by dicumyl peroxide (DCP) in the presence of PP/HDPE under shear. The cure–blend was to cure EPDM alone first under shear (dynamic curing) and then mix the cured EPDM with PP and HDPE. The effect of DCP concentration, intensity of the shear mixing, and the rubber/plastic composition were studied using capillary rheometer and X-ray diffractometer. The PP-rich ternary blends showed the effect of the mechanooxidative degradation of PP by shear and peroxide. The melt viscosity increased with increasing DCP concentration in blends of EPDM-rich compositions. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the inclusion of 25 wt % of linear EPDM in the PP/HDPE mixture for the PP-rich ternary blends changed the crystal structure of polypropylene component in the ternary blends. However, the dynamic curing did not alter the crystal structure of PP or HDPE in the blends.  相似文献

The viability of thermomechanical recycling of post‐consumer milk pouches (blend of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE)) and its scope for suitable engineering applications were investigated. The effects of blending with ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer (EPDM) rubber and subsequent curing using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) on the macromolecular structure and properties of recycled polyethylene (PE) blends were studied. The crosslinking efficiency of recycled PE/EPDM blends and possible thermooxidative degradation of recycled polymer upon peroxide curing was assessed using torque and gel content measurements along with infrared spectroscopic analysis. Both the torque and gel content of the blends varied with DCP crosslinking reactions and also were affected by oxidative degradation. In view of the electrical application area of this recycled blend material, the dielectric breakdown strength and volume resistivity were measured. The mechanical performance and thermal stability of recycled PE/EPDM blends improved with progressive crosslinking by DCP but deteriorated somewhat at higher DCP dose. Scanning electron microscopy showed good interface bonding between recycled polymer and dispersed EPDM phase in the cured blends compared to the non‐cured blends. Nylon 11/ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) composites with various concentration of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) were prepared using a single-screw extruder. The influence of DCP concentration on the mechanical properties and rheological behavior of nylon 11/EVOH composites as well as gel content was investigated. The experimental results showed that the impact and tensile strength were significantly improved when the DCP loading was in the range of 1.0~1.5 wt% while the elongation at break reduced. All nylon 11/EVOH melts with and without DCP were pseudoplastic and exhibited shear-thinning behavior. The apparent viscosity of composites was increased dramatically with the addition of DCP and was up to the maximum value at 1.5 wt% DCP level, which indicated that the interfacial adhesion owe to co-crosslinking between nylon 11 and EVOH was increased markedly.

The control of miscibility for isotactic polypropylene (PP) and ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) has been attempted by adding poly(ethylene-comethacrylic acid) (EMA) ionomers and by applying dynamic vulcanization. The rheological properties, crystallization behavior, and morphology of the dynamically vulcanized EPDM/PP/ionomer ternary blends were investigated with a Rheometrics dynamic spectrometer (RDS), a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Two kinds of EMA ionomers neutralized with different metal ions (Na+ and ZN++) were investigated. Blends were prepared on a laboratory internal mixer at 190°C. Blending and curing were performed simultaneously, i.e., EPDM was vulcanized with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) in the presence of PP/ionomer. The composition of PP and EPDM was fixed at 50/50 by wt% and the contents of EMA ionomer were vaired from 5 to 20 parts based on the total amount of PP and EPDM. It was found that the addition of ionomers and the application of the dynamic vulcanization were effective in enhancing the miscibility of PP and EPDM. The structure of the blends was controlled by the following three component phases, i.e., the phase of the dynamially valcanized EPDM, PP, and Zn-neutralized ionomer. The ternary blends showed more miscibility than the PP/EPDM binary blend. This is due to the thermoplastic interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) of the ternary blends. The structure and properties of the ternary blends differed, depending on the types and contents of ionomer, i.e., the ternary blend containing Na-neutralized ionomer did not show a thermoplastic IPN structure clearly, even though the blend was prepared by dynamic vulcanization. The ternary blend containing Zn-neutralized ionomer clearly showed the behavior of a thermoplastic IPN when the contents of ionomer and DCP were 15 parts and 1.0 part, respectively.  相似文献

Crosslinking of polypropylene–polyethylene (PP-PE) blends involving 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% of PP with dicumylperoxide (DCP) or tert-butyl perbenzoate (TBPB) and in the presence of coagent pentaerythritol tetrallyl ether (PETA) was investigated at 180°C. It was found that at lower concentrations of peroxide alone (e.g., 2.5% of DCP) only PE component is crosslinked in all compositions of PP-PE blends. In the crosslinking of PP-PE 50:50 with 4% of TBPB, insoluble gel was obtained, which contained 13% PP and 87% PE. If 2% PETA was also used, the portion of PP in gel increased to 39%; the total yield of gel in PP-PE blend increased from 50 to 70%. The lower crosslinking efficiency of coagent PETA in the PP-PE blends compared with PP alone is associated with better solubility of the coagent in the PE phase in contrast to the PP phase. The coagent does not particularly raise the crosslinking efficiency of peroxide in PE, but increases it in the PP phase. A remarkable decrease in melting temperature and temperature of crystallization of both polymer components depending on peroxide concentration was found by calorimetric measurements.  相似文献

Devulcanized rubber (DR) with highly crystalline polypropylene (PP) was used to prepare thermoplastic vulcanizates on the basis of DR/PP (75/25) blends. Influences of the curing systems, dicumyl peroxide (DCP) and gamma radiation, were investigated by X‐ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The mechanical and thermal behaviors of the composites in different proportions were studied. We found that the elastic modulus and tensile strength of the thermoplastic vulcanizates exhibited higher values than unvulcanized material. This finding may be attributed to an improvement in DR dispersion as well as interaction networks between the PP matrix and DR in the presence of DCP and the formation of more stable linkages. Peroxide caused a degradation of the PP molecules. A higher level of DCP was used in the peroxide‐vulcanized system and caused greater influence on properties. The mechanical and thermal properties of the unirradiated and irradiated composites were evaluated. J. VINYL ADDIT. TECHNOL., 20:168–176, 2014. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article discusses some properties such as tensile properties, chemical and oil resistance, gel content, crystallinity, and morphology of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM)/natural rubber (NR) blends. Dicumyl peroxide (DCP) was applied as a crosslinking agent. In terms of tensile properties, peroxide vulcanized blend shows higher tensile strength and tensile modulus (stress at 100% elongation, M100) as compared with the unvulcanized blend. The elongation at break of the peroxide vulcanized blend is higher for the blend with NR rich content compared with the EPDM rich content. The improvements in chemical and oil resistance as well as gel content of peroxide vulcanized blends have also proved the formation of crosslinks in the rubber phase. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs from the surface extraction of the blends support that the crosslinks have occurred during dynamic vulcanization. Dynamical vulcanization with DCP has decreased the percent crystallinity of blends that can be attributed to the formation of crosslinks in the rubber.  相似文献

Attempts have been made to use different amount of ground tire rubber (GTR) powder as a partial substitute for natural rubber (NR) in thermoplastic elastomer based on linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE, 60 wt%) and NR (40wt%). Maleic anhydride (MA) and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) were used, during melt mixing of the compound, to modify GTR and vulcanize the rubber phases of the blends. Morphology of the blends was studied by scanning electron microscopy and rheological behavior investigated through rheomechanical spectroscopy. Mechanical properties of the blends were also measured, and the effect of GTR concentration on properties was evaluated. Obtained results showed that modification of GTR with MA and using DCP in the blends containing GTR improves the bonding between GTR and matrix. This leads to a distinctive rheological behavior and enhances tensile strength and elongation at break compared to its corresponding simple blend. It can be said that using of MA and DCP during melt mixing of thermoplastic elastomers based on LLDPE/NR containing GTR, concludes to a better dispersion of GTR and formation of morphology similar to that of a dynamic vulcanized thermoplastic elastomer, which improves interfacial bonding between phases and causes a dramatically increase in mechanical properties. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) from natural rubber (NR) and polypropylene (PP) were studied, prepared by dynamic vulcanization during melt mixing, using various peroxides to crosslink the rubber phase. The objective was to find a proper balance between degree of crosslinking of the rubber and degradation of the PP‐phase, and the tendency of the peroxide to form smelly by‐products, in particular acetophenone. Four types of peroxides were investigated: 2,5‐dimethyl‐2,5‐di(tert‐butyl‐peroxy) hexyne‐3 (DTBPHY), 2,5‐dimethyl‐2,5‐di(tert‐butyl‐peroxy) hexane (DTBPH), di(tert‐butylperoxyisopropyl) benzene (DTBPIB), and dicumyl peroxide (DCP), at two mixing temperatures: 160 and 180°C for a 60/40 NR/PP TPV. The maximum and final mixing torques are clearly related to the intrinsic decomposition temperature of the particular peroxide used, where DCP and DTBPIB turn out to be effective at 160°C, whereas the other two require a higher temperature of 180°C. The best mechanical properties, tensile strength, elongation at break and compression set are obtained at lower mixing temperature with DCP and DTBPIB, presumably due to less degradation of the NR and PP. Unfortunately, these two peroxides form more smelly by‐products than DTBPHY and DTBPH. Dependent on the requirements of the pertinent application, a balanced selection needs to be made between the various factors involved to obtain an optimal product performance of these NR/PP TPVs. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various types of bonding agents have been tried with blends of bagasse fibers and some thermoplastics such as low‐density polyethylene (LDPE), high‐density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS), polypropylene (PP), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These bonding agents are, namely, pentaerythritol tetracrylate (PETA), 1,6 hexandiol diacrylate (HDA), and dicumyl peroxide (DCP). In addition, a traditional coupling agents 3‐aminopropyltrimethoxy silane (AMPS) and di‐aminopropyltrimetoxy silane (DAMPS) were included for comparison. Electron beam (EB) irradiation is applied only for LDPE and HDPE at 40 and 10 kGy, respectively, before mixing with bagasse fibers. The data obtained reveal that incorporation of bonding agents remarkably increases the mechanical properties for all samples under investigation; the maximum improvement is observed in LDPE followed by HDPE, PP, PS, and PVC composites. Also, the physical properties enhanced but not at the same degree as mechanical properties. Among the tested bonding agents, it was found that PETA, DCP followed by DAMPS have highest efficiency in LDPE, whereas in case of HDPE, EB radiation was higher than PETA followed by DCP. PETA was superior in case of PS composites. Furthermore, PETA and HDA experienced higher efficiency than DAMPS and AMPS in case of PP and PVC composites. Comparison between the properties of thermoplastic composites and medium density fiberboard (MDF) reveals that most of the properties of thermoplastics composites are better than MDF. However, modulus of rupture of MDF was found to be slightly higher than thermoplastics except for PVC composite. POLYM. COMPOS., 2008. © 2008 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献
