A nanoparticle dispersion is known to enhance the mechanical properties of a variety of polymers and resins. In this work, the effects of silica (SiO2) nanoparticle loading (0–2 wt%) and ammonia/ethylene plasma-treated fibers on the interfacial and mechanical properties of carbon fiber–epoxy composites were characterized. Single fiber composite (SFC) tests were performed to determine the fiber/resin interfacial shear strength (IFSS). Tensile tests on pure epoxy resin specimens were also performed to quantify mechanical property changes with silica content. The results indicated that up to 2% SiO2 nanoparticle loading had only a little effect on the mechanical properties. For untreated fibers, the IFSS was comparable for all epoxy resins. With ethylene/ammonia plasma treated fibers, specimens exhibited a substantial increase in IFSS by 2 to 3 times, independent of SiO2 loading. The highest IFSS value obtained was 146 MPa for plasma-treated fibers. Interaction between the fiber sizing and plasma treatment may be a critical factor in this IFSS increase. The results suggest that the fiber/epoxy interface is not affected by the incorporation of up to 2% SiO2 nanoparticles. Furthermore, the fiber surface modification through plasma treatment is an effective method to improve and control adhesion between fiber and resin.  相似文献

The overall mechanical performance of glass–carbon hybrid fibers reinforced epoxy composites depends heavily upon fiber–matrix interfacial properties and the service temperatures. Fiber‐bundle pull‐out tests of glass (GF) and/or carbon fiber (CF) reinforced epoxy composites were carried out at room and elevated temperatures. Graphene nanoplatelets were added in the interfacial region to investigate their influence on the interfacial shear strength (IFSS). Results show that IFSS of specimens with fiber‐bundle number ratio of GF:CF = 1:2 is the largest among the hybrid composites, and a positive hybridization effect is found at elevated temperatures. IFSS of all the specimens decreases with the increasing of test temperatures, while the toughness shows a contrary tendency. As verified by scanning electron microscopy observations, graphene nanoplatelets on fiber surface could enhance the IFSS of pure glass/carbon and hybrid fibers reinforced epoxy composites at higher temperatures significantly. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study intends to produce plasma polymer thin films of γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-GPS) on glass fibers in order to improve interfacial adhesion of glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composites. A low frequency (LF) plasma generator was used for the plasma polymerization of γ-GPS on the surface of glass fibers at different plasma powers and exposure times. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and SEM analyses of plasma polymerized glass fibers were conducted to obtain some information about surface properties of glass fibers. Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) values and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of composites reinforced with plasma polymerized glass fiber were evaluated. The ILSS and IFSS values of non-plasma polymerized glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composite were increased 110 and 53%, respectively, after plasma polymerization of γ-GPS at a plasma power of 60 W for 30 min. The improvement of interfacial adhesion was also confirmed by SEM observations of fractured surface of the composites.  相似文献

Plasma‐copolymerized functional coatings of acrylic acid and 1,7‐octadiene were deposited onto high strength, high modulus, poly‐p‐phenylene benzobisoxazole (PBO) fibers. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) with trifluoroethanol derivatization confirmed that the PBO fibers were covered completely with the plasma copolymer and that the coating contained a quantitative concentration of carboxylic acid groups. Microdebond single filament adhesion and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests were used to evaluate the interfacial strength of epoxy resin composites containing these functionalized PBO fibers. Both the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) obtained from single filament tests, and the ILSS of high volume fraction composites were a function of the surface functionality of the fibers so that there was a good correlation between ILSS and IFSS data. The tensile strengths of single fibers with or without coating were comparable, demonstrating that the fiber surface was not damaged in the plasma‐coating procedure. Indeed, the statistical analysis showed that Weibull modulus was increased. Therefore, plasma‐polymerized coatings can be used to control the interfacial bond between PBO fibers and matrix resins and act as a protective size for preserving the mechanical properties of the fibers. Introducing nanoparticles onto the surface of carbon fibers (CFs) is a useful method for enhancing the quality of fiber-matrix interface. In this work, a liquid sizing agent containing functionalized silica nanoparticles (SiO2) was well prepared to improve interfacial strength and mechanical properties of composites. In order to enhance the dispersion of SiO2 nanoparticles in sizing agent, SiO2 nanoparticles were chemically grafted with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), and then silanized silica (SiO2-APS) was introduced into the interphase by a conventional sizing process as well. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed the successful preparation of SiO2-APS. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that a uniform distribution of SiO2-APS on the fiber surface and the increased surface roughness. The sized fibers (CF/SiO2-APS) exhibited a high surface free energy and good wettability based on a dynamic contact angle testing. Interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of untreated and sized CFs composites were investigated. Simultaneous enhancements of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and impact toughness of CF/SiO2-APS composites were achieved, increasing 44.79% in ILSS and 31.53% in impact toughness compared to those of untreated composites. Moreover, flexural strength and modulus of composites increased by 32.22 and 50.0% according to flexural test. In addition, the hydrothermal aging resistance of CF/SiO2-APS composites has been improved significantly owing to the introduced Si-O-Si bonds at the interface.  相似文献

A novel method was developed for grafting poly(acrylamide) (PAAM) on to the carbon fiber (CF) surface via reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to improve the interaction between carbon fibers and epoxy matrix in the composites system. The carbon fibers were first treated with nitric acid and γ‐methacryloxypropyltrimethoxy silane (KH570). Then, the PAAM was grafting onto the carbon fiber surface via RAFT polymerization. The resulted carbon fibers functionalized with PAAM (CF‐PAAM) were characterized by FTIR, XPS, and TGA, and the results revealed that CF‐PAAM were synthesized successfully. The introduction of PAAM chains could make the fiber surface rougher and introduce a large numbers of –NH2 groups, which can improve the interfacial adhesion in the composites. The microbond test results showed that the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the composites reinforced by CF‐PAAM has been enhanced about 107%. POLYM. The surfaces of glass fibers were sized by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyester, and epoxy resin types in order to improve the mechanical interfacial properties of fibers in the unsaturated polyester matrix. The surface energetics of the glass fibers sized were investigated in terms of contact angle measurements using the wicking method based on the Washburn equation, with deionized water and diiodomethane as the wetting liquids. In addition, the mechanical behaviors of the composites were studied in the context of the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), critical stress intensity factor (KIC), and flexural measurements. Different evolutions of the London dispersive and specific (or polar) components of the surface free energy of glass fibers were observed after different sizing treatments. The experimental result of the total surface free energies calculated from the sum of their two components showed the highest value in the epoxy‐sized glass fibers. From the measurements of mechanical properties of composites, it was observed that the sizing treatment on fibers could improve the fiber–matrix interfacial adhesion, resulting in improved final mechanical behaviors, a result of the effect of the enhanced total surface free energy of glass fibers in a composite system. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This study is focused on the impact of oxygen plasma treatment on properties of carbon fibers and interfacial adhesion behavior between the carbon fibers and epoxy resin. The influences of the main parameters of plasma treatment process, including duration, power, and flow rate of oxygen gas were studied in detail using interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of carbon fiber composites. The ILSS of composites made of carbon fibers treated by oxygen plasma for 1 min, at power of 125 W, and oxygen flow rate of 100 sccm presented a maximum increase of 28% compared to composites made of untreated carbon fibers. Furthermore, carbon fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile strength test, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy analyses. It was found that the concentration of reactive functional groups on the fiber surface was increased after the plasma modification, as well the surface roughness, which finally improved the interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and epoxy resin. However, high power and long exposure times could partly damage the surface of carbon fibers and decrease the tensile strength of filaments and ILSS of treated fiber composites.  相似文献

Four different types of composites were prepared based on unmodified and modified epoxy matrices: (A) unmodified epoxy/carbon fiber composites, (B) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch, (C) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by nano‐CaCO3 particles directly, and (D) modified epoxy/carbon fiber composites by nano‐CaCO3 particles and silane coupling agent together. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the carbon fiber‐reinforced composites was investigated. The results show that the silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch can increase the ILSS to the highest degree. Nevertheless, Sample D, i.e., modified by nano‐CaCO3 particles and silane coupling agent together, even presents a decrease of the ILSS. The integration effect of silane coupling agent/nano‐CaCO3 master batch was concluded. POLYM. COMPOS., 2012. © 2012 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

A series of self‐emulsified waterborne epoxy resin (WEP) emulsions were used as surface sizing for carbon fibers (CFs) to improve the interfacial adhesion between the CF and epoxy matrix. In this work, the hydrogenated bisphenol‐A epoxy resin (HBPAE) was modified by polyethylene glycol (PEG) with molecular weights of 400, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 4000, and 6000 g/mol. The properties of the WEP emulsion were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The surface characteristics of sized CFs were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Afterwards, CF/EP composites were prepared and their fracture surface and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) were examined. The results indicated that PEG2000 modified HBPAE sizing had the optimum emulsion stability and film‐forming ability. Meanwhile, the results also demonstrated that a continuous and uniform sizing layer was formed on the surface of CFs and the surface sizing was excellent in improving the chemical activity of CFs. Compared with unsized CFs, the O1s/C1s composition ratio was observed to increase from 11.51% to 33.17% and the ILSS of CF/EP composites increased from 81.2 to 89.7 MPa, exhibiting better mechanical property than that of commercial Takemoto S64 sized CFs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. FriedelCrafts Reaction as a simple and convenient approach to the surface modification of aramid fiber was introduced in this paper. Epoxy chloropropane was chosen as the treatment reagent to modify aramid fibers surface via Graft reaction. After the modification, the interfacial properties of aramid/epoxy composites were investigated by the single fiber pull-out test (SFP), and the mechanical properties of aramid fibers were investigated by the tensile strength test. The results showed that the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) value of aramid/epoxy composites was enhanced by about 50%, and the tensile strength of aramid fibers had no obvious damage. The crystalline state of aramid fibers was determined by X-ray diffraction instrument (XRD), and the results showed that there were not any distinct crystal type varieties. The surface elements of aramid fibers were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the analysis of which showed that the oxygen/carbon ratio of aramid fiber surface increased obviously. The possible changes of the chemical structure of aramid fibers were investigated via Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), and the analysis of which showed that the epoxy functional groups were grafted into the molecule structure of aramid fibers. The surface morphology of aramid fibers was analyzed by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the SEM results showed that the physical structure of aramid fibers was not etched or damaged obviously. The surface energy of aramid fibers was investigated via the dynamic capillary method, and the results showed that the surface energy was enhanced by 31.5%, and then the wettability degree of aramid fiber surface was enhanced obviously too. All of the results indicated that this novel chemical modification approach not only can improve the interfacial bonding strength of aramid/epoxy composites remarkably, but also have no negative influence on the intrinsic tensile strength of aramid fibers.  相似文献

To improve the interfacial properties in carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced unsaturated polyester (UP) composites, we directly introduced functionalized carbon nanotubes dispersed in the fiber sizing onto the fiber surface. For comparing the influence of polymer type on sizing effect, two different polymers (UP MR13006 and water-soluble epoxy (EP)) were used to prepare sizing agent. Morphology and surface energy of CFs were examined by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic contact angle analysis test. Tensile strength was investigated in accordance with ASTM standards. Mechanical properties of the composites were investigated by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and impact toughness. Test results indicate that TS, ILSS, and impact toughness were enhanced simultaneously. For UP matrix, the sizing agent containing UP has better reinforcing and toughening effect than the sizing agent containing water-soluble EP.  相似文献

In this article, effects of electrochemical oxidation and sizing treatment of PAN‐based carbon fibers (CFs) on the tensile properties, surface characteristics, and bonding to epoxy were investigated. As found, the electrochemical oxidation improves the tensile strength of single CF by 16.0%, due to weakening the surface stress concentration and smoothing the surface structure. Further sizing treatment shows a negligible effect on the tensile strength. Both oxidation and sizing treatments significantly improve the wettability and surface energies of CFs by introducing oxygen‐containing functional groups. Microbond test was conducted to characterize the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between a single fiber and an epoxy droplet. The oxidation treatment increases IFSS slightly, which is due to the contradictory effects of the formation of chemical bonds between the resin and CFs, and the reduced mechanical interlocking. Further sizing treatment significantly enhances IFSS from 73.6 to 81.0 MPa, due to the formation of vast chemical bonds. Furthermore, the oxidation and sizing treatment can effectively reduce the degradation of IFSS to the hygrothermal ageing for the CF/epoxy system. POLYM. Functionalized silicon dioxide nanoparticles (nano‐fSiO2) were uniformly deposited on the surface of carbon fibers (CFs) using a coating process which consisted of immersing the fibers directly in a suspension of nano‐fSiO2 particles and epoxy monomers in 1‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone (NMP). The 0° flexural properties, 90° flexural properties, and Interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) mechanical properties of unidirectional epoxy composites made with nano‐fSiO2+epoxy sized carbon fibers, with control fibers, and with epoxy‐only sized fibers were measured and compared. An obvious increase of the fiber/matrix adherence strength was obtained with the nano‐fSiO2+epoxy coating. The nano‐fSiO2+epoxy sized CF/epoxy composites showed a relative increase of 15%, 50%, and 22% in comparison to control fibers, for the Interlaminar shear strength, the 90° flexural strength and the 90° flexural modulus, respectively, but little e difference was measured between the different systems for the 0° flexural properties. The observation of the fracture surfaces by scanning electron microscopy of composite fracture confirmed the improvement of the interfacially dependent mechanical properties. POLYM. A phenylethynyl-terminated imide oligomer (LaRC PETI-5®) with a number average molecular weight of 2500 g/mol has been applied onto the surfaces of PAN-based carbon fiber tows and woven carbon fabrics as a sizing material to introduce an interphase between the fiber and matrix in carbon/BMI composites. The adhesion between the fiber and matrix was enhanced by the presence of a properly processed LaRC PETI-5® interphase. The results showed that when LaRC PETI-5® was sized and processed at 150°C, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of unidirectional IM7/BMI composite measured by using a microindentation technique and the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of a carbon/BMI composite measured by short beam shear test were markedly improved by about 35% and 66%, respectively, in comparison with the unsized counterparts. The adhesion enhancement strongly depends not only on the presence or absence of LaRC PETI-5® sizing interphase but also on the temperature profile applied to the sizing before composite fabrication. Both of these factors critically influence the physical and chemical state of the sizing material. Scanning electron microscopic observations of the composite fracture surfaces support the improved interfacial property of carbon/BMI composites.  相似文献

In this work the effect of atmospheric plasma treatment on carbon fiber has been studied. The carbon fibers were treated for 1, 3 and 5 min with a He/O2 dielectric barrier discharge atmospheric pressure plasma. The fiber surface morphology, surface chemical composition and interfacial shear strength between the carbon fiber and epoxy resin were investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the single fiber composite fragmentation test. Compared to untreated carbon fibers, the plasma treated fiber surfaces exhibited surface morphological and surface composition changes. The fiber surfaces were found to be roughened, the oxygen content on the fiber surfaces increased, and the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) improved after the atmospheric pressure plasma treatment. The fiber strength showed no significant changes after the plasma treatment.  相似文献

Poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiozol) (PBZT) fibers were subjected to radio-frequency (RF)-induced, glow-discharge plasma treatments using argon and carbon dioxide gases in order to modify the adhesion of the fibers to bisphenol-A epoxy. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was used as a measure of the adhesion and was determined using the microbond technique. Scanning electron photomicrographs revealed no visible surface etching at magnifications of up to 10 000 x . Slight, but statistically significant, improvements in IFSS were noted with the CO2 plasma-treated fibers as compared with control fibers, but Ar plasma-treated fibers showed no improvement.  相似文献

The Graphene oxide (GO) sheets were used for preparing the epoxy resin Pickering emulsion. The particle size and the zeta potential of the Pickering emulsion were measured to evaluate its stability. The stable emulsion could be served as the film former of sizing agent for carbon fiber (CF). The effect of the Pickering emulsion stabilized by GO sheets on the properties of CF and the interfacial adhesion property of CF reinforced composite were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that there existed a layer of sizing agent film with GO sheets evenly on the CF surface. Abrasion resistance and stiffness values of CF were tested and the results indicated that the sized CF conformed to the requirement of CF handleability. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) test indicated that the interfacial adhesion of the composite could be greatly improved. The fracture surfaces of CF composites were examined by SEM after ILSS tests. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42285.  相似文献
