Polypropylene/polypropylene‐grafted‐maleic anhydride/glass fiber reinforced polyamide 66 (PP/PP‐g‐MAH/GFR PA 66) blends‐composites with and without the addition of polypropylene‐grafted‐maleic anhydride (PP‐g‐MAH) were prepared in a twin screw extruder. The effect of the compatibilizer on the thermal properties and crystallization behavior was determined using differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The hold time was set to be equal to 5 min at 290°C. These conditions are necessary to eliminate the thermomechanical history in the molten state. The crystallization under nonisothermal conditions and the plot of Continuous‐Cooling‐Transformation of relative crystallinity diagrams of both PP and PA 66 components proves that PP is significantly affected by the presence of PP‐g‐MAH. From the results it is found that an abrupt change is observed at 2.5 wt % of PP‐g‐MAH as a compatibilizer and then levels off. A thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) of a ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM) and nylon copolymer (PA) was prepared by dynamic vulcanization. Maleic anhydride (MAH)–grafted EPDM (EPDM–g–MAH), MAH‐grafted EPR (EPR–g–MAH), and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) were used as compatibilizers. The effect of dynamic vulcanization and compatibilizer on the crystallization behavior of PA was investigated. Differential scanning calorimeter measurement results showed no pronounced shift in the crystallization temperature for PA in EPDM–PA TPV compared to that for PA in the neat state, whereas the crystallization temperature increased after adding compatibilizer. The decrease in the crystallinity of TPVs was a result of the crystallization occurring in confined spaces between rubber particles. The equilibrium melting temperature (Tm0) of the PA copolymer was measured and was determined to be 157°C. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of PA in the neat and TPV states also was investigated. The crystallization rate was highest in the compatibilized TPV and lowest in the neat PA, whereas it was intermediate in the uncompatibilized TPV unvulcanized blends. Compared with unvulcanized EPDM–PA blends, the dynamic vulcanization process seemed to cause an obvious increase in the crystallization rate of the PA copolymer, especially when a suitable compatibilizer was used. This occurred because the dynamic vulcanization introduced fine crosslinked rubber particles that could act as heterogeneous nucleating centers. In addition, the use of a suitable compatibilizer permitted the formation of finely dispersed vulcanized rubber particles and therefore increased the density of the nucleating centers. The complex morphology of the blends was investigated by atomic force microscopy to evaluate the effect of compatibilizer on the size of the dispersed rubber particles. Compared with the morphology of TPVs with the same dosage of EPDM–g–MAH compatibilizer, the morphology of TPVs using EPR–g–MAH as compatibilizer showed much smaller dispersed rubber particles, which may have contributed to the higher crystallization rate. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene (PP)/nylon 11/maleated ethylene‐propylene‐diene rubber (EPDM‐g‐MAH) ternary polymer blends were prepared via melt blending in a corotating twin‐screw extruder. The effect of nylon 11 and EPDM‐g‐MAH on the phase morphology and mechanical properties was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy observation revealed that there was apparent phase separation for PP/EPDM‐g‐MAH binary blends at the level of 10 wt % maleated elastomer. For the PP/nylon 11/EPDM‐g‐MAH ternary blends, the dispersed phase morphology of the maleated elastomer was hardly affected by the addition of nylon 11, whereas the reduced dispersed phase domains of nylon 11 were observed with the increasing maleated elastomer loading. Furthermore, a core‐shell structure, in which nylon 11 as a rigid core was surrounded by a soft EPDM‐g‐MAH shell, was formed in the case of 10 wt % nylon 11 and higher EPDM‐g‐MAH concentration. In general, the results of mechanical property measurement showed that the ternary blends exhibited inferior tensile strength in comparison with the PP matrix, but superior toughness. The β‐nucleating activity and toughening effect of acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) graft copolymer on isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and the compatibilizing role of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP‐g‐MAH) on the iPP/ABS blends were investigated. The results show that ABS can induce the formation of β‐crystal in iPP, and its β‐nucleating efficiency depends on its concentration and dispersibility. The relative content of β‐crystal form is up to 36.19% with the addition of 2% ABS. The tensile and impact properties of the iPP were dramatically enhanced by introducing ABS. The incorporation of PP‐g‐MAH into the iPP/ABS blends inhibits the formation of β‐crystal. The crystallization peaks of the blends shift toward higher temperature, due to the heterogeneous nucleation effect of PP‐g‐MAH on iPP. The toughness of iPP/ABS blends improved due to favorable interfacial interaction resulting from the compatibilization of PP‐g‐MAH is significantly better than the β‐crystal toughening effect induced by ABS. The ductile–brittle transition temperatures were determined for compatibilized nylon 6/acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (PA6/ABS) copolymer blends. The compatibilizers used for those blends were methyl methacrylate‐co‐maleic anhydride (MMA‐MAH) and MMA‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate (MMA‐GMA). The ductile–brittle transition temperatures were found to be lower for blends compatibilized through maleate modified acrylic polymers. At room temperature, the PA6/ABS binary blend was essentially brittle whereas the ternary blends with MMA‐MAH compatibilizer were supertough and showed a ductile–brittle transition temperature at ?10°C. The blends compatibilized with maleated copolymer exhibited impact strengths of up to 800 J/m. However, the blends compatibilized with MMA‐GMA showed poor toughness at room temperature and failed in a brittle manner at subambient temperatures. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polyamide 66–thermal liquid crystalline polymer (PA66/TLCP) composites containing 10 wt% TLCP was compatibilized by ethylene–propylene–diene‐grafted maleic anhydride terpolymer (MAH‐g‐EPDM). The blending was performed on a twin‐screw extrusion, followed by an injection molding. The rheological, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermal, mechanical properties, as well as the morphology and FTIR spectra, of the blends were investigated and discussed. Rheological, DMA, and FTIR spectra results showed that MAH‐g‐EPDM is an effective compatibilizer for PA66/TLCP blends. The mechanical test indicated that the tensile strength, tensile elongation, and the bending strength of the blends were improved with the increase of the content of MAH‐g‐EPDM, which implied that the blends probably have a great frictional shear force, resulting from strong adhesion at the interface between the matrix and the dispersion phase; while the bending modulus was weakened with the increase of MAH‐g‐EPDM content, which is attributed to the development of the crystalline phase of PA66 hampered by adding MAH‐g‐EPDM. A method concerning with the simultaneous reinforcing and toughening of polypropylene (PP) was reported. Dynamical cure of the epoxy resin with 2‐ethylene‐4‐methane‐imidazole (EMI‐2,4) was successfully applied in the PP/maleic anhydride‐grafted ethylene‐vinyl acetate copolymer (MAH‐g‐EVA), and the obtained blends named as dynamically cured PP/MAH‐g‐EVA/epoxy blends. The stiffness and toughness of the blends are in a good balance, and the smaller size of epoxy particle in the PP/MAH‐g‐EVA/epoxy blends shows that MAH‐g‐EVA was also used as a compatibilizer. The structure of the dynamically cured PP/MAH‐g‐EVA/epoxy blends is the embedding of the epoxy particles by the MAH‐g‐EVA. The cured epoxy particles as organic filler increases the stiffness of the PP/MAH‐g‐EVA blends, and the improvement in the toughness is attributed to the embedded structure. The tensile strength and flexural modulus of the blends increase with increasing the epoxy resin content, and the impact strength reaches a maximum of 258 J/m at the epoxy resin content of 10 wt %. DSC analysis shows that the epoxy particles in the dynamically cured PP/MAH‐g‐EVA/epoxy blends could have contained embedded MAH‐g‐EVA, decreasing the nucleating effect of the epoxy resin. Thermogravimetric results show the addition of epoxy resin could improve the thermal stability of PP, the dynamically cured PP/MAH‐g‐EVA/epoxy stability compared with the pure PP. Wide‐angle x‐ray diffraction analysis shows that the dynamical cure and compatibilization do not disturb the crystalline structure of PP in the blends. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, maleated–grafted ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate (EVA‐g‐MA) was used as the interfacial modifier for polypropylene/polyamide‐6 (PP/PA6) blends, and effects of its concentration on the mechanical properties and the morphology of blends were investigated. It was found that the addition of EVA‐g‐MA improved the compatibility between PP and PA6 and resulted in a finer dispersion of dispersed PA6 phase. In comparison with uncompatibilized PP/PA6 blend, a significant reduction in the size of dispersed PA6 domain was observed. Toluene‐etched micrographs confirmed the formation of interfacial copolymers. Mechanical measurement revealed that the addition of EVA‐g‐MA markedly improved the impact toughness of PP/PA6 blend. Fractograph micrographs revealed that matrix shear yielding began to occur when EVA‐g‐MA concentration was increased upto 18 wt %. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The formation of core‐shell morphology within the dispersed phase was studied for composite droplet polymer‐blend systems comprising a polyamide‐6 matrix, ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) shell and high density polyethylene (HDPE) core. In this article, the effect of EPDM with different molecular weights on the morphology and properties of the blends were studied. To improve the compatibility of the ternary blends, EPDM was modified by grafting with maleic anhydride (EPDM‐g‐MAH). It was found that core‐shell morphology with EPDM‐g‐MAH as shell and HDPE as core and separated dispersion morphology of EPDM‐g‐MAH and HDPE phase were obtained separately in PA6 matrix with different molecular weights of EPDM‐g‐MAH in the blends. DSC measurement indicated that there may be some co‐crystals in the blends due to the formation of core‐shell structure. Mechanical tests showed that PA6/EPDM‐g‐MAH/HDPE ternary blends with the core‐shell morphology exhibited a remarkable rise in the elongation at break. With more perfect core‐shell composite droplets and co‐crystals, the impact strength of the ternary blends could be greatly increased to 51.38 kJ m?2, almost 10 times higher than that of pure PA6 (5.50 kJ m?2). In this work, we attempted two different ways of processing to improve interfacial adhesion of polypropylene (PP) and ethylene–propylene–diene terpolymer (EPDM) by introducing maleic anhydride (MAH); In one way, the in situ grafting and dynamic vulcanization (ISGV) were performed simultaneously from PP and EPDM with MAH in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) in an intensive mixer. In another way, PP was first grafted with MAH and then the PP‐g‐MAH was blended with EPDM in the intensive mixer in the presence of DCP by the dynamic vulcanization (DV). It was found that the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of both PP and EPDM phases were shifted to higher temperature as the EPDM content increased for the blends prepared by both IGSV and DV methods, mainly due to the crosslinking of EPDM. The higher Tgs and larger storage moduli were observed for the blends prepared by the ISGV method than those prepared by the DV method, while the morphology showed that the size reduction of dispersed particles in latter blends was larger than that of the former blends. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The comparison of the mechanical properties between poly(propylene)/ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer elastomer (PP/EPDM) and poly(propylene)/maleic anhydride‐g‐ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer [PP/MEPDM (MAH‐g‐EPDM)] showed that the latter blend has noticeably higher Izod impact strength but lower Young's modulus than the former one. Phase morphology of the two blends was examined by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, indicating that the miscibility of PP/MEPDM was inferior to PP/EPDM. The poor miscibility of PP/MEPDM degrades the nucleation effectiveness of the elastomer on PP. The observations of the impact fracture mode of the two blends and the dispersion state of the elastomers, determined by scanning electron microscopy, showed that PP/EPDM fractured in a brittle mode, whereas PP/MEPDM in a ductile one, and that a finer dispersion of MEPDM was found in the blend PP/MEPDM. These observations indicate that the difference in the dispersion state of elastomer between PP/EPDM and PP/MEPDM results in different fracture modes, and thereby affects the toughness of the two blends. The finer dispersion of MEPDM in the blend of PP/MEPDM was attributed to the part cross‐linking of MEPDM resulting from the grafting reaction of EPDM with maleic anhydride (MAH) in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, polyamide 6 (PA6), maleic anhydride grafted ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer (EPDM‐g‐MA), high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) were simultaneously added into an internal mixer to melt‐mixing for different periods. The relationship between morphology and rheological behaviors, crystallization, mechanical properties of PA6/EPDM‐g‐MA/HDPE blends were studied. The phase morphology observation revealed that PA6/EPDM‐g‐MA/HDPE (70/15/15 wt %) blend is constituted from PA6 matrix in which is dispersed core‐shell droplets of HDPE core encapsulated by EPDM‐g‐MA phase and indicated that the mixing time played a crucial role on the evolution of the core‐shell morphology. Rheological measurement manifested that the complex viscosity and storage modulus of ternary blends were notable higher than the pure polymer blends and binary blends which ascribed different phase morphology. Moreover, the maximum notched impact strength of PA6/EPDM‐g‐MA/HDPE blend was 80.7 KJ/m2 and this value was 10–11 times higher than that of pure PA6. Particularly, differential scanning calorimetry results indicated that the bulk crystallization temperature of HDPE (114.6°C) was partly weakened and a new crystallization peak appeared at a lower temperature of around 102.2°C as a result of co‐crystal of HDPE and EPDM‐g‐MA. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blending polypropylene (PP) with biodegradable poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) can be a nice alternative to minimize the disposal problem of PP and the intrinsic brittleness that restricts PHB applications. However, to achieve acceptable engineering properties, the blend needs to be compatibilized because of the immiscibility between PP and PHB. In this work, PP/PHB blends were prepared with different types of copolymers as possible compatibilizers: poly(propylene‐g‐maleic anhydride) (PP–MAH), poly (ethylene‐co‐methyl acrylate) [P(E–MA)], poly(ethylene‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) [P(E–GMA)], and poly(ethylene‐co‐methyl acrylate‐co‐glycidyl methacrylate) [P(E–MA–GMA)]. The effect of each copolymer on the morphology and mechanical properties of the blends was investigated. The results show that the compatibilizers efficiency decreased in this order: P(E–MA–GMA) > P(E–MA) > P(E–GMA) > PP–MAH; we explained this by taking into consideration the affinity degree of the compatibilizers with the PP matrix, the compatibilizers properties, and their ability to provide physical and/or reactive compatibilization with PHB. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, ethylene–propylene–diene‐rubber (EPDM) was epoxidized with an in situ formed performic acid to prepare epoxided EPDM (eEPDM). The eEPDM together with the introduction of PP‐g‐AA was used to compatibilize PP/EPDM blends in a Haake mixer. FTIR results showed that the EPDM had been epoxidized. The reaction between epoxy groups in the eEPDM and carboxylic acid groups in PP‐g‐AA had taken place, and PP‐g‐EPDM copolymers were formed in situ. Torque test results showed that the actual temperature and torque values for the compatibilized blends were higher than that of the uncompatibilized blends. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation showed that the dispersed phase domain size of compatibilized blends and the uncompatibilized blends were 0.5 and 1.5 μm, respectively. The eEPDM together with the introduction of PP‐g‐AA could compatibilize PP/EPDM blends effectively. Notched Izod impact tests showed that the formation of PP‐g‐EPDM copolymer improved the impact strength and yielded a tougher PP blend. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fractionated crystallization behavior of dispersed PA6 phase in PP/PA6 blends compatibilized with PP‐g‐MAH was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) in this work. The lack of usual active heterogeneities in the dispersed droplet was the key factor for the fractionated crystallization of PA6. The crystals formed with less efficient nuclei might contain more defects in the crystal structures than those crystallized with the usual active nuclei. The lower the crystallization temperature, the lesser the perfection of the crystals and the lower crystallinity would be. The fractionated crystallization of PP droplets encapsulated by PA6 domains was also observed. The effect of existing PP‐g‐MAH‐g‐PA6 copolymer located at the interface on the fractionated crystallization could not be detected in this work. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mechanical properties and morphological studies of compatibilized blends of polyamide‐6 (PA‐6)/K resin grafted with maleic anhydride (K‐g‐MAH) and PA‐6/K resin/K‐g‐MAH were investigated as functions of K resin/K‐g‐MAH and dispersed phase K resin concentrations, and all the blends were prepared using twin screw extruder followed by injection molding. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to assess the fracture surface morphology and the dispersion of the K resin in PA‐6 continuous phase, the results showing extensive deformation in presence of K‐g‐MAH, whereas, uncompatibilized PA‐6/K resin blends show dislodging of K resin domains from the PA‐6 matrix. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) test reveals the partially miscibility of PA‐6 with K‐g‐MAH, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results further identified that the introduction of K‐g‐MAH greatly improved the miscibility between PA‐6 and K resin. The mechanical properties of PA‐6/K resin blends and K‐g‐MAH were studied through bending, tensile, and impact properties. The Izod notch impact strength of PA‐6/K‐g‐MAH blends increase with the addition of K‐g‐MAH, when the K‐g‐MAH content adds up to 20 wt %, the impact strength is as more than 6.2 times as pure PA‐6, and accompanied with small decrease in the tensile and bending strength less than 12.9% and 17.5%, respectively. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The phosphoric acid‐pentaerythritol‐melamine copolymer, which is composed of three main components of intumescent flame retardant (IFR) and has optimal intumescent degree, was selected as IFR. The influence of meleated polypropylene (PP‐g‐MAH) on the properties and compatibility of IFR polypropylene (PP) composites were studied. The results obtained from mechanical tests, rheological behavior of composites, and scanning electron microscope showed that PP‐g‐MAH was a true coupling agent for IFR/PP blends and did not change the necessary flame retardancy. The cocrystallization between bulk PP and PP segments of PP‐g‐MAH was also proven by WAXD analysis. Flow test showed that the flow behaviors of composites in the melt are those of a pseudoplastic and it is very small for PP‐g‐MAH affecting rheological behavior of the PP/IFR composite. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, the dynamic vulcanization process was applied to polypropylene (PP)/Novolac blends compatibilized with maleic anhydride‐grafted PP (MAH‐g‐PP). The influences of dynamic cure, content of MAH‐g‐PP, Novolac, and curing agent on mechanical properties of the PP/Novolac blends were investigated. The results showed that the dynamically cured PP/MAH‐g‐PP/Novolac blend had the best mechanical properties among all PP/Novolac blends. The dynamic cure of Novolac improved the modulus and stiffness of the PP/Novolac blends. The addition of MAH‐g‐PP into dynamically cured PP/Novolac blend further enhanced the mechanical properties. With increasing Novolac content, tensile strength, flexural modulus, and flexural strength increased significantly, while the elongation at break dramatically deceased. Those blends with hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) as a curing agent had good mechanical properties at HMTA content of 10 wt %. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed that dynamically cured PP/MAH‐g‐PP/Novolac blends had finer domains than the PP/MAH‐g‐PP/Novolac blends. Styrene‐acrylonitrile random copolymer (SAN) and polyarylate (PAr) block copolymer were applied as a reactive compatibilizer for polyamide‐6 (PA‐6)/acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) copolymer blends. The SAN–PAr block copolymer was found to be effective for compatibilization of PA‐6/ABS blends. With the addition of 3.0–5.0 wt % SAN–PAr block copolymer, the ABS‐rich phase could be reduced to a smaller size than 1.0 μm in the 70/30 and 50/50 PA‐6/ABS blends, although it was several microns in the uncompatibilized blends. As a result, for the blends compatibilized with 3–5 wt % block copolymer the impact energy absorption reached the super toughness region in the 70/30 and 50/50 PA‐6/ABS compositions. The compatibilization mechanism of PA‐6/ABS by the SAN–PAr block copolymer was investigated by tetrahydrofuran extraction of the SAN–PAr block copolymer/PA‐6 blends and the model reactions between the block copolymer and low molecular weight compounds. The results of these experiments indicated that the SAN–PAr block copolymer reacted with the PA‐6 during the melt mixing process via an in situ transreaction between the ester units in the PAr chain and the terminal amine in the PA‐6. As a result, SAN–PAr/PA‐6 block copolymers were generated during the melt mixing process. The SAN–PAr block copolymer was supposed to compatibilize the PA‐6 and ABS blend by anchoring the PAr/PA‐6 and SAN chains to the PA‐6 and ABS phases, respectively. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this research, the reinforcement of polypropylene (PP) was studied using a new method that is more practical for synthesizing polypropylene‐block‐poly(ethylene‐propylene) copolymer (PP‐co‐EP), which can be used as a rubber toughening agent. This copolymer (PP‐co‐EP) could be synthesized by varying the feed condition and changing the feed gas in the batch reactor system using Ziegler–Natta catalysts system at a copolymerization temperature of 10°C. The 13C‐NMR tested by a 21.61‐ppm resonance peak indicated the incorporation of ethylene to propylene chains that could build up the microstructure of the block copolymer chain. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) results also confirmed these conclusions. Under these conditions, the morphology of copolymer trapped in PP matrix could be observed and the copolymer Tg would decrease when the amount of PP‐co‐EP was increased. DMA study also showed that PP‐co‐EP is good for the polypropylene reinforcement at low temperature.
