Flow boiling of the perfluorinated dielectric fluid FC-77 in a silicon microchannel heat sink is investigated. The heat sink contains 60 parallel microchannels each of 100 μm width and 389 μm depth. Twenty-five evenly distributed temperature sensors in the substrate yield local heat transfer coefficients. The pressure drop across the channels is also measured. Experiments are conducted at five flow rates through the heat sink in the range of 20–80 ml/min with the inlet subcooling held at 26 K in all the tests. At each flow rate, the uniform heat input to the substrate is increased in steps so that the fluid experiences flow regimes from single-phase liquid flow to the occurrence of critical heat flux (CHF). In the upstream region of the channels, the flow develops from single-phase liquid flow at low heat fluxes to pulsating two-phase flow at high heat fluxes during flow instability that commences at a threshold heat flux in the range of 30.5–62.3 W/cm2 depending on the flow rate. In the downstream region, progressive flow patterns from bubbly flow, slug flow, elongated bubbles or annular flow, alternating wispy-annular and churn flow, and wall dryout at highest heat fluxes are observed. As a result, the heat transfer coefficients in the downstream region experience substantial variations over the entire heat flux range, based on which five distinct boiling regimes are identified. In contrast, the heat transfer coefficient midway along the channels remains relatively constant over the heat flux range tested. Due to changes in flow patterns during flow instability, the heat transfer is enhanced both in the downstream region (prior to extended wall dryout) and in the upstream region. A previous study by the authors found no effect of instabilities during flow boiling in a heat sink with larger microchannels (each 300 μm wide and 389 μm deep); it appears therefore that the effect of instabilities on heat transfer is amplified in smaller-sized channels. While CHF increases with increasing flow rate, the pressure drop across the channels has only a minimal dependence on flow rate once boiling is initiated in the microchannels, and varies almost linearly with increasing heat flux.  相似文献

The main objective of the present investigation is to study heat transfer in parallel micro-channels of 0.1 mm in size. Comparison of the results of this study to the ones obtained for two-phase flow in “conventional” size channels provides information on the complex phenomena associated with heat transfer in micro-channel heat sinks. Two-phase flow in parallel micro-channels, feeding from a common manifold shows that different flow patterns occur simultaneously in the different micro-channels: liquid alone (or single-phase flow), bubbly flow, slug flow, and annular flow (gas core with a thin liquid film, and a gas core with a thick liquid film). Although the gas core may occupy almost the entire cross-section of the triangular channel, making the side walls partially dry, the liquid phase always remained continuous due to the liquid, which is drawn into the triangular corners by surface tension. With increasing superficial gas velocity, a gas core with a thin liquid film is observed. The visual observation showed that as the air velocity increased, the liquid droplets entrained in the gas core disappeared such that the flow became annular. The probability of appearance of different flow patterns should be taken into account for developing flow pattern maps. The dependence of the Nusselt number, on liquid and gas Reynolds numbers, based on liquid and gas superficial velocity, respectively, was determined in the range of ReLS = 4–56 and ReGS = 4.7–270. It was shown that an increase in the superficial liquid velocity involves an increase in heat transfer (NuL). This effect is reduced with increasing superficial gas velocity, in contrast to the results reported on two-phase heat transfer in “conventional size” channels.  相似文献

This paper presents an experimental study on the convective boiling heat transfer and the critical heat flux (CHF) of ethanol–water mixtures in a diverging microchannel with artificial cavities. The results show that the boiling heat transfer and the CHF are significantly influenced by the molar fraction (xm) as well as the mass flux. For the single-phase convection region except for the region near the onset of nucleate boiling with temperature overshoot, the single-phase heat transfer coefficient is independent of the wall superheat and increases with a decrease in the molar fraction. After boiling incipience, the two-phase heat transfer coefficient is much higher than that of single-phase convection. The two-phase heat transfer coefficient shows a maximum in the region of bubbly-elongated slug flow and deceases with a further increase in the wall superheat until approaching a condition of CHF, indicating that the heat transfer is mainly dominated by convective boiling. A flow-pattern-based empirical correlation for the two-phase heat transfer coefficient of the flow boiling of ethanol–water mixtures is developed. The overall mean absolute error of the proposed correlation is 15.5%, and more than 82.5% of the experimental data were predicted within a ±25% error band. The CHF increases from xm = 0–0.1, and then decreases rapidly from xm = 0.1–1 at a given mass flux of 175 kg/m2 s. The maximum CHF is reached at xm = 0.1 due to the Marangoni effect, indicating that small additions of ethanol into water could significantly increase the CHF. On the other hand, the CHF increases with increasing the mass flux at a given molar fraction of 0.1. Moreover, the experimental CHF results are compared with existing CHF correlations of flow boiling of the mixtures in a microchannel.  相似文献

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells incorporating microchannels (D < 500 μm) can benefit from improved fuel delivery and convective cooling. However, this requires a better understanding of two-phase microchannel transport phenomena, particularly liquid–gas interactions and liquid clogging in cathode air-delivery channels. This paper develops optical fluorescence imaging of water films in hydrophilic channels with varying air velocity and water injection rate. Micromachined silicon test structures with optical access and distributed water injection simulate the cathode channels of a PEM fuel cell. Film thickness data vary strongly with air velocity and are consistent with stratified flow modeling. This work facilitates the study of regime transitions in two-phase microchannel flows and the effects of flow regimes on heat and mass transfer and axial pressure gradients.  相似文献

This paper investigates a two-phase non-boiling slug flow regime for the purposes of enhancing heat transfer in microchannel heat sinks or compact heat exchangers. The primary focus is upon understanding the mechanisms leading to enhanced heat transfer and the effect of using different Prandtl number fluids, leading to variations in Capillary number. Experimental work was conducted using Infrared thermography and results are presented in the form of Graetz solution, spanning both the thermal entrance and fully developed flow regions. Nusselt numbers enhancements were observed throughout when data was reduced to account for void fraction. However, the gaseous void was also noted to demonstrate an artificial increase with greater thicknesses of the liquid film, due to higher Capillary numbers. Up to 600% enhancement in heat transfer rates were observed over conventional Poiseuille flow. This was verified through Nusselt number measurements over inverse Graetz number ranges from 10?4 to 1 and slug length to channel diameter ratios from 0.88 to 32. Varying Prandtl and Capillary numbers caused notable effects in the transition region between entrance and fully developed flows. Significant Nu oscillations were observed for low Pr fluids due to internal circulation within the slug. However, these oscillations are observed to be damped out when higher Prandtl number fluids are employed. The thickness of the liquid film surrounding the gas bubbles is shown to have a significant influence on heat transfer performance. Overall, this study provides a greater understanding of the mechanisms leading to significant enhancements in heat exchange devices employing two-phase gas–liquid flows without boiling.  相似文献

To learn how to utilize the exhaust heat from a high-temperature gas product of a methanol reformer, the present study experimentally investigates the boiling two-phase flow in co- and counter-current microchannel heat exchangers (MCHE) with gas heating. Boiling two-phase flow patterns, two-phase flow instability, and efficiency are explored. The working fluid on the hot and cold sides are helium and liquid methanol, respectively. The silicon-based MCHE, which has dimensions of 20 mm × 20 mm, is designed with 18 parallel microchannels on both sides and is prepared using microfabrication processes. Four types of two-phase flow patterns – bubbly-elongated slug flow, annular flow, annular flow with liquid film breakup, and dryout are identified in both types of MCHE that are studied. A flow pattern map is then constructed on the plane of the methanol mass flux versus heat flux for both types of MCHE. In the counter-current MCHE, the efficiency increases significantly with an increase in the mass flux in both the single- and two-phase flow regions, while the effect of mass flux is insignificant in the co-current MCHE. In the two-phase flow region, the efficiency of both types of MCHEs gradually increases with an increase in the hot-side thermal power until the CHF is approached. The highest efficiency obtained in the present study is about 0.85 and 0.90 for the co- and counter-current MCHEs, respectively.  相似文献

Predictions of flow and heat transfer in microchannels are ongoing issues in microfludics. This work focused on laminar flow (69 < Re < 800) within rectangular microchannel with hydraulic diameter from 106 μm to 307 μm for single-phase liquid flow. The friction factors obtained by experiments on the microchannels showed that conventional theory for fully-developed flow is applicable within the range of our experiments. A manifold configuration which ensured uniform flow through the microchannel array is thought to contribute to the improvement of accuracy. The average Nusselt number for the microchannel array was also evaluated experimentally in the condition of constant heat transfer rate. We found that there were deviations between the experimental and theoretical values of heat transfer rate in the microchannels. In order to predict heat transfer rate accurately, we proposed an empirical correlation in terms of Nu/(Re0.62 Pr0.33) and Brinkman number confined to the experimental range. The correlation is expected to be useful to design the microchannel devices related to heat transfer.  相似文献

Heat transfer with liquid–vapor phase change in microchannels can support very high heat fluxes for use in applications such as the thermal management of high-performance electronics. However, the effects of channel cross-sectional dimensions on the two-phase heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop have not been investigated extensively. In the present work, experiments are conducted to investigate the local flow boiling heat transfer of a dielectric fluid, Fluorinert FC-77, in microchannel heat sinks. Experiments are performed for mass fluxes ranging from 250 to 1600 kg/m2 s. Seven different test pieces made from silicon and consisting of parallel microchannels with nominal widths ranging from 100 to 5850 μm, all with a nominal depth of 400 μm, are considered. An array of temperature sensors on the substrate allows for resolution of local temperatures and heat transfer coefficients. The results of this study show that for microchannels of width 400 μm and greater, the heat transfer coefficients corresponding to a fixed wall heat flux as well as the boiling curves are independent of channel size. Also, heat transfer coefficients and boiling curves are independent of mass flux in the nucleate boiling region for a fixed channel size, but are affected by mass flux as convective boiling dominates. A strong dependence of pressure drop on both channel size and mass flux is observed. The experimental results are compared to predictions from a number of existing correlations for both pool boiling and flow boiling heat transfer.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to investigate how the addition of small amounts of a surfactant influences the heat transfer characteristics in a thin boiling liquid film flowing in a diverging open channel. Heat transfer experiments were conducted with fluid inlet temperatures from 40 °C to 92 °C. The flow field on the plate included thin film supercritical flow upstream of a hydraulic jump and thick film subcritical flow downstream of a hydraulic jump. Nusselt numbers for the non-boiling heat transfer without surfactant addition scaled linearly with the film Reynolds number. The boiling heat transfer produced higher Nusselt numbers with a weaker dependence on the Reynolds number. Experimental results showed that a boiling surfactant solution created a thick foam layer with high heat transfer rates and Nusselt numbers that are very weakly dependent on the inlet flow rate or the inlet Reynolds number.  相似文献

This research article investigates the effect that hydrodynamic cavitation has on heat transfer. The fluid medium is refrigerant R-123 flowing through 227 μm hydraulic diameter microchannels. The cavitation is instigated by the inlet orifice. Adiabatic tests were conducted to study the two-phase cavitating flow morphologies and hydrodynamic characteristics of the flow. Diabatic experiments were performed resulting in surface temperatures under heat fluxes up to 213 W/cm2 and mass velocities from 622 kg/m2 s to 1368 kg/m2 s. Results were compared to non-cavitating flows at the same mass velocities. It was found that the cavitating flows can significantly enhance the heat transfer. The heat transfer coefficient of the cavitating flows was larger than the non-cavitating flows by as much as 84%. Single-phase and two-phase heat transfer coefficients have been elucidated and employed to deduce the heat transfer mechanism prevailing under boiling conditions with and without the presence of cavitation.  相似文献

A simultaneous visualization and measurement investigation has been carried out on flow boiling of water in parallel silicon microchannels of trapezoidal cross-section. Two sets of parallel microchannels, having hydraulic diameters of 158.8 and 82.8 μm, respectively, were used. The visualization study shows that once boiling heat transfer is established, two-phase flow and single-phase liquid flow appear alternatively with time in the microchannels. Large-amplitude/long-period fluctuations with time in wall temperatures, fluid temperatures, fluid pressures, and fluid mass flux, are measured for the first time during flow boiling in the microchannels. The fluctuation periods are found to be dependent on channel size, heat flux, and mass flux. The mechanism of the periodic boiling fluctuations in this experiment as well as their comparisons with other boiling fluctuations phenomena reported previously, are also discussed. The experimental results confirm that large-amplitude/long-period boiling fluctuations can be sustained when the fluctuations of pressure drop and mass flux have phase differences. With the aid of a microscope and high-speed video recording system, bubbly flow, slug flow, churn flow, and other peculiar flow patterns, are observed during two-phase flow periods in the microchannels.  相似文献

An analytical solution is presented to study the heat transfer characteristics of the combined pressure – electroosmotically driven flow in planar microchannels. The physical model includes the Joule heating effect to predict the convective heat transfer coefficient in two dimensional microchannels. The velocity field, which is a function of external electrical field, electroosmotic mobility, fluid viscosity and the pressure gradient, is obtained by solving the hydrodynamically fully-developed laminar Navier–Stokes equations considering the electrokinetic body force for low wall zeta potentials. Then, assuming a thermally fully-developed flow, the temperature distribution and the Nusselt number is obtained for a constant wall heat flux boundary condition. The fully-developed temperature profile and the Nusselt number depend on velocity field, channel height, solid/liquid interface properties and the imposed wall heat flux. A parametric study is presented to evaluate the significance of various parameters and in each case, the maximum heat transfer rate is obtained.  相似文献

Liquid cooling is an efficient way to remove heat fluxes with magnitudes up to 10,000 W/cm2. One limitation of current single-phase microchannel heat sinks is the relatively low Nusselt number, due to laminar flow. In this work, we experimentally investigate how to enhance the Nusselt number with the introduction of segmented flow. The segmented flow pattern was created by the periodic injection of air bubbles through a T-junction into water-filled channels. We designed a polycarbonate heat sink consisting of an array of seven parallel microchannels each with a square cross-section 500 μm wide. We show that segmented flow increases the Nusselt number of laminar flow by more than 100%, provided the mass velocity of the liquid is within the range 330–2000 kg/m2 s.  相似文献

In this paper we examine the effect of contact angle (or surface wettability) on the convective heat transfer coefficient in microchannels. Slip flow, where the fluid velocity at the wall is non-zero, is most likely to occur in microchannels due to its dependence on shear rate or wall shear stress. We show analytically that for a constant pressure drop, the presence of slip increases the Nusselt number. In a microchannel heat exchanger we modified the surface wettability from a contact angle of 20°–120° using thin film coating technology. Apparent slip flow is implied from pressure and flow rate measurements with a departure from classical laminar friction coefficients above a critical shear rate of approximately 10,000 s−1. The magnitude of this departure is dependant on the contact angle with higher contact angles surfaces exhibiting larger pressure drop decreases. Similarly, the non-dimensional heat flux is found to decrease relative to laminar non-slip theory, and this decrease is also a function of the contact angle. Depending on the contact angle and the wall shear rate, variations in the heat transfer rate exceeding 10% can be expected. Thus the contact angle is an important consideration in the design of micro, and even more so, nano heat exchangers.  相似文献

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are conducted using the volume-of-fluid (VOF) method to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of slug flow and the mechanism of slug flow induced CO2 corrosion. The hydrodynamic characteristics are significantly affected by the viscous, interfacial, and inertial forces. In inertia dominated flows, the velocity of fully developed falling liquid film is increased with increased Taylor bubble rising velocity. The developing falling liquid film is formed at about the length of 0.5 diameter from the Taylor bubble nose, the fully developed falling liquid film is reached at about the length of 1.5–2.1 diameter from the Taylor bubble nose. The average mass transfer coefficient in the falling liquid film is always higher than that in the Taylor bubble wake zone. The iron ion near wall mass transfer coefficient is higher than that of hydrogen ion. The wall shear stress is increased with increased Taylor bubble rising velocity in fully developed falling liquid film zone, and the wall shear stress has a large fluctuation due to the chaotic and turbulent vortexes in Taylor bubble wake zone. The formation and the damage mechanism of the corrosion product scale are proposed for the gas–liquid two-phase vertical upward slug flow induced CO2 corrosion. It is found that the wall shear stress of upward gas–liquid slug flow is alternate with high frequency, which is the key factor resulting in the corrosion product scale fatigue cracking. The CFD simulation results are in satisfactory agreement with previous experimental data and models available in literature.  相似文献

Laminar convective heat transfer in the entrance region of microchannels of rectangular cross-section is investigated under circumferentially uniform wall temperature and axially uniform wall heat flux thermal boundary conditions. Three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed for laminar thermally developing flow in microchannels of different aspect ratios. Based on the temperature and heat flux distributions obtained, both the local and average Nusselt numbers are presented graphically as a function of the dimensionless axial distance and channel aspect ratio. Generalized correlations, useful for the design and optimization of microchannel heat sinks and other microfluidic devices, are proposed for predicting Nusselt numbers. The proposed correlations are compared with other conventional correlations and with available experimental data, and show very good agreement.  相似文献

The fluid flow and heat transfer behavior of liquid–liquid two phase flows have led to significantly improve the heat transfer rates in microchannels. Both numerical and experimental studies are reviewed in this paper to gain useful insights into the effect of a number of parameters such as film thickness, Peclet number, working fluid and flow geometry on hydrodynamic and thermal behavior of microchannels using liquid-liquid two phase flow. In addition, the paper summarises information about common correlations proposed to predict the pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient in the form of Nusselt number (Nu). The present study shows that there is little agreement across the literature between measured pressure drop and Nusselt number and predictions based on these correlations. Finally, the conclusions and important summaries, and some possible future development of this field are presented.  相似文献

An experiment has been carried out to study the phase split of water–nitrogen two-phase flow through a horizontal T-junction with a square cross section (500 μm × 500 μm), focusing on the effect of flow pattern. By comparing the results of slug, slug–annular and annular flows, it is shown that phase split characteristic of micro-T-junction highly depends on inlet flow pattern. When the inlet flow is a slug flow, it takes on gas rich in side branch. But when the inlet flow shifts to an annular flow, the side branch is rich in liquid. For an slug–annular flow, the curves show transitional characteristics. The effect of superficial velocities on the phase split of each flow pattern is considered as following: the liquid taken off decreases with an increase of liquid superficial velocity and increases with an increase of gas superficial velocity. The results have been compared to that of a 500 μm T-junction with a circular cross section. It is found that the square T-junction shows more liquid taken off at slug flow and slug–annular flow. While, at annular flow, the liquid taken off increases slower at high gas taken off in square T-junction due to cross section effect.  相似文献

Convective heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of nanofluids in rectangular microchannels were measured. An integrated microsystem consisting of a single microchannel on one side, and two localized heaters and five polysilicon temperature sensors along the channel on the other side were fabricated. Aluminum dioxide (Al2O3) with diameter of 170 nm nanofluids with various particle volume fractions were used in experiments to investigate the effect of the volume fraction of the nanoparticles to the convective heat transfer and fluid flow in microchannels. The convective heat transfer coefficient of the Al2O3 nanofluid in laminar flow regime was measured to be increased up to 32% compared to the distilled water at a volume fraction of 1.8 volume percent without major friction loss. The Nusselt number measured increases with increasing the Reynolds number in laminar flow regime. The measured Nusselt number which turned out to be less than 0.5 was successfully correlated with Reynolds number and Prandtl number based on the thermal conductivity of nanofluids.  相似文献

In the present work, the two-phase turbulent boundary layer in subcooled boiling flow is investigated. The bubbles in the near-wall region have a significant effect on the dynamics of the underlying liquid flow, as well as on the heat transfer. The present work develops a single-fluid model capable of accounting for the interactions between the bubbles and the liquid phase, such that the two-phase convective contribution to the total wall heat transfer can be described appropriately even in the framework of single-fluid modeling. To this end, subcooled boiling channel flow was experimentally investigated using a laser-Doppler anemometer to gain insight into the bubble-laden near-wall velocity field. It was generally observed that the streamwise velocity component was considerably reduced compared to the single-phase case, while the near-wall turbulence was increased due to the presence of the bubbles. Since the experimentally observed characteristics of the liquid velocity field turned out to be very similar to turbulent flows along rough surfaces, it is proposed to model the near-wall effect of the bubbles on the liquid flow analogously to the effect of a surface roughness. Incorporating the proposed approach as a dynamic boundary condition into a well-established mechanistic flow boiling model makes it possible to reflect adequately the contribution of the microconvection to the total wall heat transfer. A comparison against the experimental data shows good agreement for the predicted wall shear stress as well as for the wall heat flux for a wide range of wall temperatures and Reynolds numbers.  相似文献
