Two-phase flow patterns of nitrogen gas and aqueous CuO nanofluids in a vertically capillary tube were investigated experimentally. The capillary tube had an inner diameter of 1.6 mm and a length of 500 mm. Water-based CuO nanofluid was a suspension consisted of water, CuO nanoparticles and sodium dodecyl benzol sulphate solution (SDBS). The mass concentration of CuO nanoparticles varied from 0.2 wt% to 2 wt%, while the volume concentration of SDBS varied from 0.5% to 2%. The gas superficial velocity varied from 0.1 m/s to 40 m/s, while the liquid superficial velocity varied from 0.04 m/s to 4 m/s. Experiments were carried out under atmospheric pressure and at a set temperature of 30 °C. Compared with conventional tubes, flow pattern transition lines occur at relatively lower water and gas flow velocities for gas–water flow in the capillary tube. While, flow pattern transition lines for gas–nanofluid flow occur at lower liquid and gas flow velocities than those for gas–water in the capillary tube. The effect of nanofluids on the two-phase flow patterns results mainly from the change of the gas–liquid surface tension. Concentrations of nanoparticles and SDBS have no effects on the flow patterns in the present concentration ranges.  相似文献

The convective heat transfer, friction factor and effectiveness of different volume concentrations of Fe3O4 nanofluid flow in an inner tube of double pipe heat exchanger with return bend has been estimated experimentally and turbulent flow conditions. The test section used in this study is of double pipe type in which the inner tube diameter is 0.019 m, the annulus tube diameter is 0.05 m and the total length of inner tube is 5 m. At a distance of 2.2 m from the inlet of the inner tube the return bend is provided. The hot Fe3O4 nanofluid flows through an inner tube, where as the cold water flows through an annulus tube. The volume concentrations of the nanoparticles used in this study are 0.005%, 0.01%, 0.03% and 0.06% with Reynolds number range from 15,000 to 30,000. Based on the results, the Nusselt number enhancement is 14.7% for 0.06% volume concentration of nanofluid flow in an inner tube of heat exchanger at a Reynolds number of 30,000 when compared to base fluid data; the pumping penalty of nanofluid is < 10%. The effectiveness of heat exchanger for water and nanofluid flow is explained in terms of number of transfer units (NTU) in order to estimate the overall performance of the double pipe heat exchanger. New correlations for Nusselt number and friction factor have been developed based on the experimental data.  相似文献

The thermal performance of a cylindrical screen mesh heat pipe with hybrid nanofluid was experimentally investigated. The hybrid nanofluid was prepared by mixing Al2O3 and CuO nanoparticles with deionised water. The heat pipe was fabricated with straight copper tube of dimensions 300 mm length, 12.5 mm outer diameter and 1 mm thickness. The wick structure in the heat pipe was created by a three layer copper screen mesh of 100 mesh size. The heat input to the heat pipe was varied from 50 W to 250 W in five equal steps. The heat pipe was tested with three hybrid nanofluids made with combinations of Al2O3 and CuO nanoparticle in DI water (Al2O3 75%–CuO 25%, Al2O3 50%–CuO 50% and Al2O3 25%–CuO 75%). The tested hybrid nanofluids were made with 0.1% volume concentration of Al2O3 and CuO nanoparticle combination in deionised water. The results of the investigation showed that for the maximum heat load of 250 W considered in this work, the thermal resistance of the hybrid nanofluid with combination, Al2O3 25%–CuO 75%, showed 44.25% reduction compared to deionised water. The reduction in thermal resistance is due to the formation of porous coating on the wick surface which increases the wettability and surface roughness thereby creating more nucleation sites as seen in the SEM images. From the experimental investigation, it was observed that hybrid nanofluids are alternative to the conventional working fluids in heat pipes for electronic cooling applications.  相似文献

Convective heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of water/propylene glycol (70:30% by volume) based CuO nanofluids flowing in a plain tube are investigated experimentally under constant heat flux boundary condition. Glycols are normally used as an anti-freezing heat transfer fluids in cold climatic regions. Nanofluids are prepared by dispersing 50 nm diameter of CuO nanoparticles in the base fluid. Experiments are conducted using CuO nanofluids with 0.025%, 0.1% and 0.5% volume concentration in the Reynolds numbers ranging from 1000 < Re < 10000 and considerable heat transfer enhancement in CuO nanofluids is observed. The effect of twisted tape inserts with twist ratios in the range of 0 < H/D < 15 on nanofluids is studied and further heat transfer augmentation is noticed. The increment in the pressure drop in the CuO nanofluids over the base fluid is negligible but the experimental results have shown a significant increment in the convective heat transfer coefficient of CuO nanofluids. The convective heat transfer coefficient increased up to 27.95% in the 0.5% CuO nanofluid in plain tube and with a twisted tape insert of H/D = 5 it is further increased to 76.06% over the base fluid at a particular Reynolds number. The friction factor enhancement of 10.08% is noticed and increased to 26.57% with the same twisted tape, when compared with the base fluid friction factor at the same Reynolds number. Based on the experimental data obtained, generalized regression equations are developed to predict Nusselt number and friction factor.  相似文献

In the present investigation nanofluids containing CuO and Al2O3 oxide nanoparticles in water as base fluid in different concentrations produced and the laminar flow convective heat transfer through circular tube with constant wall temperature boundary condition were examined. The experimental results emphasize that the single phase correlation with nanofluids properties (Homogeneous Model) is not able to predict heat transfer coefficient enhancement of nanofluids. The comparison between experimental results obtained for CuO / water and Al2O3 / water nanofluids indicates that heat transfer coefficient ratios for nanofluid to homogeneous model in low concentration are close to each other but by increasing the volume fraction, higher heat transfer enhancement for Al2O3 / water can be observed.  相似文献

Laminar convective heat transfer and viscous pressure loss were investigated for alumina–water and zirconia–water nanofluids in a flow loop with a vertical heated tube. The heat transfer coefficients in the entrance region and in the fully developed region are found to increase by 17% and 27%, respectively, for alumina–water nanofluid at 6 vol % with respect to pure water. The zirconia–water nanofluid heat transfer coefficient increases by approximately 2% in the entrance region and 3% in the fully developed region at 1.32 vol %. The measured pressure loss for the nanofluids is in general much higher than for pure water. However, both the measured nanofluid heat transfer coefficient and pressure loss are in good agreement with the traditional model predictions for laminar flow, provided that the loading- and temperature-dependent thermophysical properties of the nanofluids are utilized in the evaluation of the dimensionless numbers. In other words, no abnormal heat transfer enhancement or pressure loss was observed within measurement errors.  相似文献

The heat transfer characteristics of water-based Al2O3 nanofluid flowing through the annulus-side of a shell-and-double concentric tube heat exchanger (SDCTHEX) are investigated numerically. The temperature-dependent thermophysical properties of the nanofluid and pure water were used. The heat exchanger is analyzed considering conjugate heat transfer from hot oil flowing in the shell and the inner tube to the nanofluid flowing in the annulus formed between the concentric tubes. The overall performance is assessed based on the thermohydraulic performance. The overall thermohydraulic performance of the SDCTHEX, expressed in terms of the ratio of the overall heat transfer rate to the overall pressure drop with the nanofluid flowing in the annulus, is lower than that obtained with water when compared at constant hot fluid mass flow rates and at different inner tube diameters.  相似文献

Nanofluid is a new class of heat transfer fluids engineered by dispersing metallic or non-metallic nanoparticles with a typical size of less than 100 nm in the conventional heat transfer fluids. Their use remarkably augments the heat transfer potential of the base liquids. This article presents the heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of the TiO2-water nanofluids flowing in a horizontal double tube counter-flow heat exchanger under turbulent flow conditions, experimentally. TiO2 nanoparticles with diameters of 21 nm dispersed in water with volume concentrations of 0.2–2 vol.% are used as the test fluid. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid is higher than that of the base liquid and increased with increasing the Reynolds number and particle concentrations. The heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids was approximately 26% greater than that of pure vol.%, and the results also show that the heat transfer coefficient of the nanofluids at a volume concentration of 2.0 vol.% was approximately 14% lower than that of base fluids for given conditions. For the pressure drop, the results show that the pressure drop of nanofluids was slightly higher than the base fluid and increases with increasing the volume concentrations. Finally, the new correlations were proposed for predicting the Nusselt number and friction factor of the nanofluids, especially.  相似文献

In the present study, experimental and analytical thermal performance of automobile radiator using nanofluids is investigated and compared with performance obtained with conventional coolants. Effect of operating parameters and nanoparticle concentration on heat transfer rate are studied for water as well as CuO/EG‐water based nanofluid analytically. The results are presented in the form of graphs showing variations of net heat transfer rate for various coolant flow rate, air velocity, and source temperature for various CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids. Experimental results indicate that with the increase in coolant flow rate and air velocity, heat transfer rate increases, reaches maximum and then decreases. Experimental investigation of a radiator is carried out using CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids. Results obtained by experimental work and analytical MATLAB code are almost the same. Maximum absolute error in water and air side is within 12% for all flow condition and coolant fluids. Nusselt number of nanofluid is calculated using equation number 33[9]. The results obtained from experimental work using 0.2% volume CuO/EG‐water based nanofluids are compared with the results obtained from MATLAB code. The results show that the maximum error in the outlet temperature of the coolant and air is 12% in each case. Thus MATLAB code can be used for different concentration of nanofluids to study the effect of operating parameters on heat transfer rate. Thus MATLAB code developed is valid for given heat exchanger applications. From the results obtained by already validated MATLAB code, it is concluded that increase in coolant flow rate, air velocity, and source temperature increases the heat transfer rate. Addition of nanoparticles in the base fluid increases the heat transfer rate for all kind of base fluids. Among all the nanofluid analyzed in this study, water‐based nanofluid gives highest value of heat transfer rate and is recommended for the heat exchanger applications under normal operating conditions. Maximum enhancement is observed for ethylene glycol‐water (4:6) mixture for 1% volume concentration of CuO is almost equal to 20%. As heat transfer rate increases with the use of nanofluids, the heat transfer area of the radiator can be minimized.  相似文献

In this paper, a numerical investigation on heat transfer performance and flow fields of different nanofluids flows through elliptic annulus in a laminar and turbulent flow regimes. The three-dimensional continuity, Navier–Stokes and energy equations are solved by using finite volume method (FVM) and the SIMPLE algorithm scheme is applied to examine the effects of laminar and turbulent flow on heat transfer characteristics. This study evaluates the effects of four different types of nanoparticles, Al2O3, CuO, SiO2 and ZnO, with different volume fractions (0.5–4%) and diameters (25–80 nm) under constant heat flux boundary condition using water as a base fluid were used. The Reynolds number of laminar flow was in the range of 200  Re  1500, while for turbulent flow it was in the range of 4000  Re  10,000. The results have shown that SiO2–water nanofluid has the highest Nusselt number, followed by ZnO–water, CuO–water, Al2O3–water, and lastly pure water. The Nusselt number for all cases increases with the volume fraction but it decreases with the rise in the diameter of nanoparticles. In all configurations, the Nusselt number increases with Reynolds number. It is found that the glycerine–SiO2 shows the best heat transfer enhancement compared with other tested base fluids.  相似文献

The heat transfer coefficient and friction factor of TiO2 and SiO2 water based nanofluids flowing in a circular tube under turbulent flow are investigated experimentally under constant heat flux boundary condition. TiO2 and SiO2 nanofluids with an average particle size of 50 nm and 22 nm respectively are used in the working fluid for volume concentrations up to 3.0%. Experiments are conducted at a bulk temperature of 30 °C in the turbulent Reynolds number range of 5000 to 25,000. The enhancements in viscosity and thermal conductivity of TiO2 are greater than SiO2 nanofluid. However, a maximum enhancement of 26% in heat transfer coefficients is obtained with TiO2 nanofluid at 1.0% concentration, while SiO2 nanofluid gave 33% enhancement at 3.0% concentration. The heat transfer coefficients are lower at all other concentrations. The particle concentration at which the nanofluids give maximum heat transfer has been determined and validated with property enhancement ratio. It is observed that the pressure drop is directly proportional to the density of the nanoparticle.  相似文献

In this study, numerical investigation of CuO/water nanofluids in a triple concentric-tube heat exchanger has been carried out using a commercial CFD software. The primary objective of this study is to conduct a heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of water-based CuO nanofluids under turbulent flow regime. Reynolds number for the nanofluid has also been considered in the range of 2500 to 10,000 with a nanoparticle volume concentration of 0% to 3%. The effects of flow rate, volume concentration of nanoparticles, and flow arrangement on heat transfer performance of nanofluid have been studied for four flow arrangements. The comparison of the performance with and without nanofluid has been done. It was found that thermal performance and overall effectiveness increased with the increase in Reynolds number and volume concentration of nanoparticles in all the four flow arrangements for the considered range of operating parameters.  相似文献

Nanofluids, suspensions of nanoparticles (less than 100 nm) in a basefluid, have shown enhanced heat transfer characteristics. In this study, thermal performances of nanofluids in industrial type heat exchangers are investigated. Three mass particle concentrations of 2%, 4%, and 6% of silicon dioxide–water (SiO2–water) nanofluids are formulated by dispersing 20 nm diameter nanoparticles in distilled water. Experiments are conducted to compare the overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of water vs. nanofluids in laboratory-scale plate and shell-and-tube heat exchangers. Experimental results show both augmentation and deterioration of heat transfer coefficient for nanofluids depending on the flow rate and nanofluid concentration through the heat exchangers. This trend could be explained by the counter effect of the changes in thermo-physical properties of fluids together with the fouling on the contact surfaces in the heat exchangers. The measured pressure drop while using nanofluids show an increase when compared to that of basefluid which could limit the use of nanofluids in industrial applications.  相似文献

Heat transfer enhancement by using CuO/water nanofluid in corrugated tube equipped with twisted tape is presented. The investigated ranges are (1) three different CuO concentrations: 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7% by volume (2) three different twist ratios of twisted tape: y/w = 2.7, 3.6 and 5.3 (3) two different arrangements of twisted direction of twisted tape relative to spiral direction of corrugated tube: parallel and counter arrangements, and (4) Reynolds number from 6200 to 24000. The results achieved from the use of the nanofluid and twisted tape, are compared with those obtained from the uses of nanofluid alone and twisted tape alone. The experimental results reveal that at similar operating conditions, heat transfer rate, friction factor as well as thermal performance factor associated with the simultaneous application of CuO/water nanofluid and twisted tape are higher than those associated with the individual techniques. Evidently, heat transfer rate increases with increasing CuO/water nanofluid concentration and decreasing twist ratio. In addition, the twisted tape coupled with corrugated tube in counter pattern offer higher heat transfer performances than the ones in parallel pattern. Over the range studied, the maximum thermal performance factor 1.57 is found with the use of CuO/water nanofluid at concentration of 0.7% by volume in corrugated tube together with twisted tape at twist ratio (y/w) of 2.7 (in counter arrangement), for Reynolds number of 6200 where heat transfer rate and friction factor increase to 2.67 times and 5.76 times of those in the plain corrugated tube.  相似文献

The effects of using different geometrical parameters with the combination of nanofluid on heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics in a helically coiled tube heat exchanger (HCTHE) are numerically investigated. A CuO nanoparticle with a diameter of 25 nm dispersed in water with a particle concentration of 4% was used as the working fluid. The three dimensional governing equations (continuity, momentum and energy) along with the boundary conditions are solved using the finite volume method (FVM). The mass flow rate of water in the annulus was kept constant and the nanofluid flow rate in the inner tube was varied. The effect of flow configuration (parallel and counter) was also examined in this study. The performance of the HCTHE was evaluated in terms of Nusselt number, heat transfer rate, pressure drop, effectiveness and performance index. The results reveal that certain geometrical parameters such as the helix radius and inner tube diameter do affect the performance of the HCTHE under laminar flow conditions. It is also found that counter-flow configuration produced better results as compared to parallel-flow configuration.  相似文献

An experimental investigation on the convective heat transfer characteristics in the developing region of tube flow with constant heat flux is carried out with alumina–water nanofluids. The primary objective is to evaluate the effect of particle size on convective heat transfer in laminar developing region. Two particle sizes were used, one with average particle size off 45 nm and the other with 150 nm. It was observed that both nanofluids showed higher heat transfer characteristics than the base fluid and the nanofluid with 45 nm particles showed higher heat transfer coefficient than that with 150 nm particles. It was also observed that in the developing region, the heat transfer coefficients show higher enhancement than in the developed region. Based on the experimental results a correlation for heat transfer in the developing region has been proposed for the present range of nanofluids.  相似文献

Heat exchangers have been widely used for efficient heat transfer from one medium to another. Nanofluids are potential coolants, which can afford excellent thermal performance in heat exchangers. This study examined the effects of water and CuO/water nanofluids (as coolants) on heat transfer coefficient, heat transfer rate, frictional loss, pressure drop, pumping power and exergy destruction in the corrugated plate heat exchanger. The heat transfer coefficient of CuO/water nanofluids increased about 18.50 to 27.20% with the enhancement of nanoparticles volume concentration from 0.50 to 1.50% compared to water. Moreover, improvement in heat transfer rate was observed for nanofluids. On the other hand, exergy loss was reduced by 24% employing nanofluids as a heat transfer medium with comparing to conventional fluid. Besides, 34% higher exergetic heat transfer effectiveness was found for 1.5 vol.% of nanoparticles. It has a small penalty in the pumping power. Hence, the plate heat exchanger performance can be improved by adapting the working fluid with CuO/water nanofluids.  相似文献

The results are reported of an investigation of the heat transfer characteristics and entropy generation for a graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) nanofluid with specific surface area of 750 m2/g under laminar forced convection conditions inside a circular stainless steel tube subjected to constant wall heat flux. The analysis considers constant velocity flow and a concentration range from 0.025 wt.% to 0.1 wt.%. The impact of the dispersed nanoparticles concentration on thermal properties, convective heat transfer coefficient, thermal performance factor and entropy generation is investigated. An enhancement in thermal conductivity for GNP of between 12% and 28% is observed relative to the case without nanoparticles. The convective heat transfer coefficient for the GNP nanofluid is found to be up to 15% higher than for the base fluid. The heat transfer rate and thermal performance for 0.1 wt.% of GNP nanofluid is found to increase by a factor of up to 1.15. For constant velocity flow, frictional entropy generation increases and thermal entropy generation decreases with increasing nanoparticle concentration. But, the total entropy generation tends to decrease when nanoparticles are added at constant velocity and to decrease when velocity rises. Finally, it is demonstrated that a GNP nanofluid with a concentration between 0.075 wt.% and 0.1 wt.% is more energy efficient than for other concentrations. It appears that GNP nanofluids can function as working fluids in heat transfer applications and provide good alternatives to conventional working fluids in the thermal fluid systems.  相似文献

This research presents an experimental and numerical study on the heat transfer of α-Al2O3/water nanofluid flowing through the double pipe and shell and tube heat exchangers, under laminar flow conditions. Effects of important parameters such as hot and cold volume flow rates, nanofluid temperature, and nanoparticles concentration on the heat transfer characteristics are investigated. The results indicated that the heat transfer performance of both double pipe and shell and tube heat exchangers increases with increasing the hot and cold volume flow rates, as well as the particle concentrations and nanofluid inlet temperature. Compared with pure water, the results indicated that the heat transfer coefficients of nanofluid in the double pipe and shell and tube heat exchangers are higher than those of water by 13.2% and 21.3%, respectively. Also, the heat transfer performance of nanofluid in a shell and tube heat exchanger is 26.2% higher than the double pipe heat exchanger. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique was used for heat transfer simulation in the previously mentioned heat exchangers. Computed overall heat transfer coefficients of the nanofluids are in good agreement with the experimental data.  相似文献

An experimental investigation has been carried out to study the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of nanofluid flow inside horizontal flattened tubes under constant heat flux. The nanofluid is prepared by dispersion of CuO nanoparticle in base oil and stabilized by means of an ultrasonic device. Nanofluids with different particle weight concentrations of 0.2%, 0.5%, 1% and 2% are used. Copper tubes of 11.5 mm I.D. are flattened into oblong shapes and used as test sections. The nanofluid flowing inside the tube is heated by an electrical heating coil wrapped around it. Required data are acquired for laminar and hydrodynamically fully developed flow inside round and flattened tubes. The effect of different parameters such as flow Reynolds number, flattened tube internal height and nanofluid particle concentration on heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of the flow is studied. Observations show that the heat transfer performance is improved as the tube profile is flattened. Flattening the tube profile resulted in pressure drop increasing. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient as well as pressure drop is increased by using nanofluid instead of base fluid. Furthermore, the performance evaluation of the two enhanced heat transfer techniques studied in this investigation shows that applying flattened tubes instead of the round tube is a more effective way to enhance the convective heat transfer coefficient compared to the second method which is using nanofluids instead of the base liquid.  相似文献
