This paper contributes a novel methodology for operations analysis of computer integrated manufacturing systems. The methodology employs an integrated set of personal computer-based manufacturing systems modelling software, and is conducted in three stages. The methodology is illustrated in detail for analysis of materials flow and staffing for a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) installed at a medical instruments manufacturing plant. First, a rough-cut capacity and materials flow analysis was performed using a queueing model. Second, a detailed analysis of FMS system characteristics was conducted by creating and analysing a discrete-event simulation model. Finally, a graphical animation package was used to verify previous results and provide visual feedback on FMS system performance. Analysis results were obtained rapidly and conveniently, and were used to advise manufacturing managers regarding FMS operating policy. This analysis methodology can be applied to a wide range of computer integrated manufacturing systems and manufacturing cells.  相似文献

A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is designed to achieve good productivity and low cost. The success of an FMS depends largely on effective production scheduling and control. However, it has been found that current manufacturing scheduling and control algorithms lack the flexibility to handle interruptions or resource breakdowns; hence, system performance drops dramatically and abruptly when interruptions occur. This research develops a computer-simulation-based framework of FMS scheduling and control system using the holonic concept. This framework can maintain stability and flexibility while accommodating system disturbance, increase throughput, reduce part flow-time and work-in-process inventory, and balance workload among identical workstations. The significance of this research is the investigation of an innovative approach to revolutionary advances of control technologies for advanced manufacturing systems, and to the revitalisation of control and scheduling algorithms used by existing FMSs. A case study has been provided to substantiate the effectiveness of this proposed framework.  相似文献

Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) are designed to produce a variety of different part types with high machine utilisation, so the maintenance technique is necessary and very important in an FMS. This paper discusses the maintenance problem in an FMS and its simulation, analyses the maintainability of a real FMS shop, and presents the architecture of an integrated system of maintenance and decision-making/scheduling for manufacturing shop control. The modelling and simulation of the maintenance activities in the shop are shown. The simulation program is written in SLAM II and the special subroutines are realised in Fortran. The interest is directed towards the use of the method of simulation for maintenance and decision-making in FMSs.  相似文献

Manufacturing industry is facing a stricter challenge than ever before owing to the rapid change in market requirements. Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) have a much greater capability than traditional fixed-type production systems for coping with the rapid change. In this paper, a modified coloured-timed Petri net (MCTPN) is developed to model the dynamic activities in an FMS. The MCTPN provides an object-oriented and modular method of modelling manufacturing activities. It includes colour, time, modular and communication attributes. The features of object-oriented modelling allow the FMS to be modelled with the properties of classes, objects, and container trees. Since the system activities can be encapsulated and modularised by the proposed MCTPN, the manufacturing systems can be easily constructed and investigated by the system developers. It makes the concept of software IC possible for modelling complex FMSs. Once all of the MCTPN objects are well defined, the developers need to consider only the interfaces and operations relating to the MCTPN objects. In order to demonstrate the capability of the proposed MCTPN, the FMS in the Manufacturing Automation Technology Research Center (MATRC) of the National Taiwan University will be stimulated and justified by using the proposed MCTPN along with the G2 expert system.  相似文献

High productivity is the primary goal of flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) in which semi-independent workstations are integrated using automated material-transport systems and hierarchical local networks. Availability of various subsystems and of the system as a whole is a prerequisite for achieving functional integration as well as high throughput. An FMS also has inherent routing and operation flexibilities that provide it with a certain degree of fault tolerance. A certain volume of production can thus be maintained in the face of subsystem (i.e., machines, robots, material handling system, etc.) failures. In this article, we propose two reliability measures, namely, part reliability (PR) and FMS reliability (FMSR) for manufacturing systems and present algorithms to evaluate them. We also consider the dynamic or time-dependent reliability analysis as a natural generalization of the static analysis. The methods outlined use an algorithm that generates process-spanning graphs (PSGs), which are used to evaluate the reliability measures.  相似文献

This paper presents a novel method to determine the relative impact on logical interactions and interrelationships between operations and information systems within a manufacturing environment by formulating an integrated model, in which both operational function and information processing function are modelled and simulated to predict system behaviour and to obtain an optimal solution that maximises system performances. To achieve this, modelling and simulation of a flexible printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) system has been implemented. The research has shown that applying this approach is valuable for analysing a wide range of manufacturing systems (CIM, FMS, dynamic process control systems, etc.).  相似文献

Time control and management are important in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The time to finish the machining unit is uncertain because of the uncertainties of the workpieces, so the whole time to finish the FMS is also variable. In order to reduce the time to finish for the whole FMS to improve efficiency, the modeling and analysis method for this timing kind of FMS based on standard Petri net is proposed. The modeling method is a mapping from the machining units to the component of a Petri net, and the timing factors are represented by a timing function on the place set. With the Petri net model obtained and its reachability graph, the timing factors influencing the implementation of the FMS are analysed and presented. In addition, the method is obtained to find the best state line for the implementation of the FMS.  相似文献

The increased use of flexible manufacturing systems to provide customers with diversified products efficiently has created a significant set of operational challenges for managers. This technology poses a number of decision problems that need to be solved by researchers and practitioners. In the literature, there have been a number of attempts to solve design and operational problems. Special attention has been given to machine loading problems, which involve the assignment of job operations and allocation of tools and resources to optimize specific measures of productivity. Most existing studies focus on modeling the problem and developing heuristics in order to optimize certain performance metrics rather than on understanding the problem and the interaction between the different factors in the system. The objective of this paper is to study the machine loading problem. More specifically, we compare operation aggregation and disaggregation policies in a random flexible manufacturing system (FMS) and analyze its interaction with other factors such as routing flexibility, sequencing flexibility, machine load, buffer capacity, and alternative processing-time ratio. For this purpose, a simulation study is conducted and the results are analyzed by statistical methods. The analysis of results highlights the important factors and their levels that could yield near-optimal system performance.  相似文献

Automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) are playing an important role in modern manufacturing systems such as flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The integration of AS/RS systems and FMS is very complex owing to the complexity of the individual elements. Stochastic coloured petri nets (SCPN) can be used to model, simulate and analyse such a system efficiently and realistically. In this paper, SCPN based simulation, aided by the Taguchi method of design of experiments, has been used for analysing the influence of important factors on makespan, unproductive travel time, and the mean flow time, and is supported by an example.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive methodology for evaluation and selection of advanced manufacturing technologies, incorporating both the economic and strategic aspects and the related imprecise as well as exact data into the decision making process. Initially, a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model that can take into account crisp, ordinal, and fuzzy data is introduced. Then, the developed framework is used for flexible manufacturing system (FMS) selection. The DEA approach is performed by employing capital and operating cost, required floor space and work-in-process (WIP) as the input variables, and using product flexibility, quality improvement and lead time reduction as the output variables. The assessment of FMS alternatives versus product flexibility and quality improvement are represented via ordinal data, while WIP and lead time reduction are stated using triangular fuzzy numbers. The proposed framework is illustrated through an application and comparative results are presented.  相似文献

Effective sequencing and scheduling of the material handling system (MHS) have an impact on the productivity of the flexible manufacturing system (FMS). The MHS cannot be neglected while scheduling the production tasks. It is necessary to take into account the interaction between machines and MHS. This paper highlights the importance of integration between production schedule and MHS schedule in FMS. The Giffler and Thompson algorithm with different priority dispatching rules is developed to minimize the makespan in the FMS production schedule. Its output is used for MHS scheduling where the distance traveled and the number of backtrackings of the automated-guided vehicles are minimized using an evolutionary algorithms such as an ant colony optimization algorithm and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The proposed evolutionary algorithms are validated with benchmark problems. The results available for the existing algorithms are compared with results obtained by the proposed evolutionary algorithms. The analysis reveals that PSO algorithm provides better solution with reasonable computational time.  相似文献

The increased use of flexible manufacturing systems to efficiently provide customers with diversified products has created a significant set of operational challenges for managers. Many issues concerning procedures and policies for the day-to-day operation of these systems still are unresolved. Previous studies in this area have concentrated on various problems by isolating or simplifying the systems under study. The primary objective of this study is to extend previous research by examining the effects of scheduling rules and routing flexibility on the performance of a constrained, random flexible manufacturing system (FMS). Other experimental factors considered are shop load, shop configuration, and system breakdowns. Within the bounds of this experiment, the results indicate that, in the presence of total routing flexibility, the effects of shop load, system breakdowns, and scheduling rules are significantly dampened. In particular, when total routing flexibility exists, the choice of scheduling rules is not critical. We also show that the behavior of scheduling rules in a more constrained FMS environment (i.e., where system breakdowns occur and material handling capability is limited) is consistent with the findings of previous research conducted under less constrained environments. Finally, results indicate that the shop configuration factor has little or no impact on a system's flow-time performance.  相似文献

Layout arrangement is important to achieve high productivity in flexible manufacturing system (FMS). This paper discusses the design of loop layout in FMS. The objective of the loop layout problem is the determination of the ordering of machines around a loop, to minimize the total number of loop traversals for a family of parts. This paper details the design, development and testing of particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique to solve the loop layout problem. The proposed method is validated with bench mark problems. The clearance between the machines is also considered in the design of loop layout. This aspect aids in selecting the best layout.  相似文献

A Petri net-based integrated model for the performance analysis of network and database transactions, generated by manufacturing clients for computer resources which are acting as the servers, is discussed. A Petri net-based multifaceted integrated modelling (PNBMIM) approach is described to investigate relevant system integration issues between the logical and physical access of information in the manufacturing system. The PNBMIM approach proposes an integrated conceptual framework for modelling and performance (both structural and behavioural) analysis of data and communication flow. Also, this framework will provide some answers to the impact of relative time-scales on the coupling and de-coupling of the various levels of a computer integrated manufacturing system, and identify the time-scales where integration becomes important. This work recognizes that the productivity of a group of machines is influenced by the dynamics of the computer resources. An example illustrating the application of the PNBMIM framework to two transfer lines is discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents the salient aspects of developing simulation-based metamodels for scheduling a typical flexible manufacturing system (FMS) operating in a tool-sharing environment. A discrete-event simulation model of the FMS is developed for the purpose of experimentation. Seven scheduling rules from the literature are incorporated in the simulation model for part scheduling decision. The performance measures considered for analysis are mean flow time, mean tardiness, and percentage of tardy parts. Simulation experiments have been carried out for various scenarios arising out of the settings of the mean interarrival time of parts for processing in the system and due-date factor. The simulation results are used to develop regression-based metamodels. These metamodels have been subjected to systematic analysis. The metamodels are found to offer a good prediction of the performance of FMS within the domain of their definition.  相似文献

A flexible manufacturing system (FMS) comprises, automated machine tools, automated material handling, and an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) as essential components. Optimal performance of each element of this system would improve the productivity and efficiency of the total FMS. In this context, this paper attempts to link the operation of the AS/RS with the production schedule and suggests two different classes of algorithms, namely, heuristics and genetic algorithms to improve the performance of the AS/RS operation by allocating the materials with minimum movement of the shuttle.  相似文献
