What makes a distributed system reliable? A study of failures in the US public switched telephone network (PSTN) shows that human intervention is one key to this large system's reliability. Software is not the weak link in the PSTN system's dependability. Extensive use of built-in self-test and recovery mechanisms in major system components (switches) contributed to software dependability and are significant design features in the PSTN. The network's high dependability indicates that the trade-off between dependability gains and complexity introduced by built-in self-test and recovery mechanisms can be positive. Likewise, the tradeoff between complex interactions and the loose coupling of system components has been positive, permitting quick human intervention in most system failures and resulting in an extremely reliable system  相似文献

Subjective mood and performance efficiency among operators of public telephone switchboards were studied as a function of interface design and operating procedures. A within-subjects field study was carried out to compare system efficiency within two different types of switchroom; one employing earlier-designed ‘cord’ switchboards, the other employing ‘cordless’ technology in a more ergonomically-designed switchroom. Fifteen subjects were studied, using a minimal intervention technique as they performed their normal operating task, to provide data throughout one working day in either system. EEG and ECG measures were obtained continuously in addition to a variety of sampled performance data and mood ratings.

On the cord design of switchboard, operators were found: (i) to carry a consistently heavier workload of concurrent calls; (ii) to be dramatically more responsive to diurnal fluctuations in call-traffic level, while maintaining more stable ‘caller waiting times’ and ‘effective call connections’; (iii) to display these advantages without exhibiting higher levels of physiological stress and (iv) to report consistently higher levels of psychological well-being.

From these findings and the results of two earlier studies it is concluded that the cord operators' greater efficiency, and professed higher levels of job satisfaction, derive mainly from the advantages which their more comprehensible and flexible system provides them in attaining and maintaining a high-quality service.  相似文献

Subjective mood and performance efficiency among operators of cordless public telephone switchboards were earlier shown to compare unfavourably with similar measures obtained among operators of the previous generation of cord boards. The present study explored the relative responsiveness of the two systems to diurnal fluctuations in call-traffic load, in an attempt to identify more specifically the advantages in cord board design and operation. In both systems information was collected concurrently from the switchroom and its associated ‘service observation room’ by sampling data every 5 min throughout the period of known maximal change in call-traffic load, 11.30-15.30, on 5 successive weekdays. Average workload per operator per 5 min was calculated from recorded call traffic and observed staffing levels. The temporal structure of sampled call-processing was analysed to provide data on ‘time to answer’ (TTA), (call type), (time to record details), (ring-tone received), and (called person answered). Only TTA was significantly related to workload. Overall, TTA was slightly, but reliably, slower for the cord board. However, a regression analysis of TTA on workload established that cordless operation was significantly less stable as workload fluctuated. Alternative explanations of these findings are advanced and the implications of current improvements to both systems are briefly outlined.  相似文献
