Nursing Student Library Usage Patterns in Online Courses

ABSTRACT

This study looked at patterns of online library usage of a sample of undergraduate nursing students (n = 82) from a medium-sized southeastern university. Specifically, information-seeking behaviors of nursing students related to electronic or remotely accessible resources (i.e., electronic databases) compared to physical library resources (i.e., reference books) were examined. Additionally, this study further investigated students' preferred methods for seeking additional assistance and information about library research, as well as overall satisfaction and usage patterns relating to library tools and assistance by librarians or other school personnel. Results indicate that these undergraduates preferred electronic resources (with particular emphasis on electronic databases) to traditional, in-person research. Other relevant findings and suggestions relating to electronic access and training with library tools are provided.

电子图书的选购已经成为图书馆文献建设工作的重要内容之一。随着选购量的不断增加,目前针对电子图书选购、安装等工作方式,已经不适应现代数字图书馆发展的需要。根据作者的工作经验,本文提出了目前图书馆在电子图书选购和建设方面存在的问题,并针对电子图书的选购工作,提出了相应的解决方案。     

Beyond the Web: TEI, the Digital Library, and the Ebook Revolution

Between August 2000 and August2002, the Electronic Text Center at theUniversity of Virginia distributed over sevenmillion freely-available electronic books tousers from more than 100 different countries. Delivered in a variety of formats, including.lit and .pdb, these ebooks have providedproof-of-concept for the adaptive uses of TEIstandards beyond the World Wide Web – standardsthat the Electronic Text Center has employedsince its inception in 1992. The first half ofthis paper discusses the mechanics of ebookproduction at the Etext Center, the limits ofthe current technology, and the conversionworkflow we hope to implement in the future.The second half discusses user response to ourebook collection, classroom applications ofebook technology, and the advantages anddisadvantages that different formats offer toscholars and instructors in the humanities.     

Appearance and functionality of electronic books

We present the results and the lessons learned from two separate and independent studies into the design, development, and evaluation of electronic books for information access: the Visual Book and the Hyper-TextBook. The Visual Book explored the importance of the visual component of the book metaphor in the production of “good” electronic books for referencing. The Hyper-TextBook concentrated on the importance of models and techniques for the automatic production of functional electronic versions of textbooks. Both studies started from similar considerations on what kinds of paper books are suitable for translation into electronic form but di.er on the prominence given to book appearance and functionalities. The results of these two research projects are critically presented in this paper, with the aim of helping designers and implementers to better integrate appearance and functional aspects of books into a more general methodology for the automatic production of electronic books for information access.

关联规则在个性化图书推荐中的应用研究

为了提高图书的借阅率,满足读者的个性化需求,提出使用关联规则挖掘技术。当读者借阅某本图书时,自动从海量图书中找到与该图书相关的书籍推荐给读者。实践证明该方法能减少读者寻找相关图书的时间,达到个性化推荐的目的。     

Superstars and outsiders in online markets: An empirical analysis of electronic books

Recent rapid growth in electronic book sales has raised a critical question for publishers and bookstores: do e-books cannibalize or increase print sales? In this article, we compare the best-selling titles sold on www.Amazon.com in print or electronic Kindle formats during the period from November 2007 to July 2010. Using econometric methods, we find that the cannibalization of print sales by e-books is more likely to occur for superstar titles written by successful authors. However, we find that a new segment of successful electronic titles that are not best-selling in print format emerge; these books would probably have been unpopular without the new Kindle store and therefore this new distribution channel has expanded the market. We refer to these titles as digital outsiders. The latter are characterized not only by lower prices but also by older release dates. They also include titles that are only released in electronic format. We then argue that electronic books increase the market viability of old print releases. Finally we identify a category that we call print-preferred books that are top sellers in print but not as e-books for reasons of color, graphics, or the need to navigate non-linearly, a style to which the current generation of e-book readers are not well adapted.     

基于ASP．NET随书光盘检索系统设计

论述了建立随书光盘Web检索系统的必要性及方法,详细介绍了用ASP．NET及ACCESS技术,构建随书光盘检索系统的设计过程、数据库的设计、程序代码的实现,解决了原来必须找到有光盘的书才能借光盘存在的效率低、光盘利用率低等种种问题,不仅使读者上网查找方便,大大节约了时间,提高了光盘的使用效率。工作人员易于管理,解决了图书馆随书光盘的管理和利用的难题,而且也促进了图书馆整体工作水平的提高。     

Usability Testing of Academic Library Web Sites

ABSTRACT

This is a selective annotated bibliography of books, journal articles, and electronic resources relating to the usability assessment or testing of the academic library Web site. It focuses on the library Web site specifics, thus answering a librarian's need for one source of information on the available publications. All journal articles have been written by or for academic librarians. This bibliography embraces the issues of usability testing as a process, its goals, objectives, tools, and methodology. The bibliography is grouped by the following topics: background information, tools and methodologies, case studies, dedicated Web sites, and samples of presentations.     

Academic library acquisitions allocation based on multiple collection development goals

Conflicting, multiple collection development goals compound the problem of allocating academic and research library acquisitions funds. Lexographic linear goal programming appears to provide an appropriate allocation methodology. The proposed method is demonstrated by a sample model in which acquisitions funds are apportioned among ten acquisitions categories representing books and periodicals in five subject disciplines: The model goals relate to:

1. (1) fiscal constraints

2. (2) provision for user needs; and

3. (3) minimum and maximum acquisition targets for various subjects and formats.

针对城市居民重复购买、闲置浪费图书资源,以及阅读爱好者缺乏分享交流平台等问题,设计并实现了基于微信公众号的有书共读系统。设计了系统的功能,包括前台扫码上传图书信息、共享图书、借阅图书、发布活动、报名活动,后台用户管理、图书管理、借阅管理、活动管理等功能。基于微信公众平台的认证接口和资源接口等实现微信公众号和有书系统的连接,基于Java SSM框架和微信JS-SDK实现了前后台各功能模块。

Development of an electronic book accessibility standard for physically challenged individuals and deduction of a production guideline

Unlike popular web-based internet and mobile applications, electronic books and similar products have lower distribution and less accessibility, making them difficult for vulnerable social groups to utilize. Various institutions have proposed electronic publication (EPUB) accessibility guidelines, based on the IDEF modeling language, to provide accessible content for electronic publications. However, these are merely guidelines for securing accessibility of common electronic books. They are not geared toward the visually impaired persons. Moreover, even if accessibility standards exist, it becomes even more difficult to then find examination tools that can fully verify standards compliance. This study establishes an electronic book accessibility standard for the physically challenged individuals, based on the EPUB 3.0 accessibility guideline. We developed an automatic/semi-automatic examination tool that can test the standard. We linked the SIGIL electronic book reader, having the highest market share in Korea, to an examination tool to verify error detection performance. Lastly, an accessibility test was performed on 50 electronic books, commercially used in the Korean electronic book market, to assess which accessibility standard domain is the most problematic. Thus, we propose a guideline on matters that should be considered when writing electronic books in Korea.     

读与玩的设计——婴幼儿图书设计研究

婴幼儿图书有其自身独有的特征:其以图为主,有时图既是文,图文紧密结合;婴幼儿图书会以玩具书的形式出现,具有"读玩结合"的特性。本文论述了婴幼儿图书与成人图书的差别是基于早期阅读的概念以及婴幼儿心理学教育学的要求。提出了婴幼儿图书必须具有"读玩结合"的特征,婴幼儿图书的设计者一定要具有"读玩结合"的设计理念。这一论点使婴幼儿图书的设计有迹可循,对进行此类图书的设计者有很好的借鉴作用。     

The researcher's companion: enhanced library support for postgraduates

The British Library Research and Innovation Centre research study What makes a digital librarian?, completed in February 1998 by research partners University of Sunderland Information Services, Gateshead MBC Libraries and Arts and Education for Change Ltd., looked at critical success factors and barriers which underpin or inhibit the development of the networked digital library. The study focused on staff skills, knowledge and attributes, management culture and attitudes, through a series of qualitative research exercises in public and academic libraries. This article summarises the literature review and looks at what LIS commentators have to say about institutional culture, organisational structures and management styles, leadership, communications, staff attributes and individual attitudes, staff training and development, in the context of developing electronic and digital library services. The author is convinced of the value of a more rigorous application of organisational and management theory to the problems and complexities of the LIS sector, as ICT innovations are breaking down older structures. LIS commentators also seem to be out of tune with staff views on such issues as effective management styles, professional and non‐professional roles in electronic library environments and the influence of the library's parent organisation on development.

建设现代"无人化"图书馆构想

针对目前国内图书馆存在着借阅检索工作效率低、管理强度大、图书上下架难等问题，提出了建设一种现代无人化图书馆的总体构想和发展思路，以提高图书馆的信息服务水平、管理水平和工作效率，最大程度地方便读者和图书管理人员。
