Preparturient heifers (n = 561) from 9 herds in 6 US states and 1 Canadian province were enrolled in a study to test the hypothesis that prepartum intramammary therapy would cure existing intramammary infections (IMI) and lead to increased milk production, reduced linear somatic cell count (LSCC), and improved reproductive performance. Mammary secretions were collected 10 to 21 d before expected calving from each quarter. Heifers were then assigned by identification number to receive intramammary therapy consisting of infusion of one tube per mammary quarter of a lactating cow commercial antibiotic preparation containing cephapirin or to a nontreated control group. Overall, 34.1% of mammary quarters were infected with a mastitis pathogen before parturition and 63.4% of heifers had at least one mammary quarter infected. The coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) caused the majority (74.8%) of prepartum IMI. Coagulase-positive staphylococci, environmental streptococci, and coliforms accounted for 24.5% of prepartum infections. Treatment had a significant effect on the cure rate of infected mammary quarters. Mammary quarters that were infected prepartum and treated with antibiotics had a 59.5% efficacy of cure rate and the percentage reduction in heifers with IMI was 51.9. Control quarters had a spontaneous cure rate of 31.7%. Treatment did not significantly affect milk production or LSCC in the first 200 d of lactation; however, there was a significant treatment by herd interaction for milk production. Quarters cured of either CNS or major pathogens had a lower LSCC in the first 200 d of lactation. No significant effect on services per conception or days open between treatment and control groups was observed. This trial demonstrated that prepartum intramammary antibiotic therapy did reduce the number of heifer IMI postpartum. Milk production, LSCC, and reproductive performance during the first 200 d of the first lactation were not significantly affected by treatment. Given these results, use of prepartum intramammary antibiotic therapy in heifers as a universal strategy to increase milk production in first-lactation dairy cows may not be warranted.  相似文献

Bacteria associated with clinical mastitis in dairy heifers   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17  
A 1-yr field investigation of clinical mastitis in heifers was carried out in 24 veterinary districts in Norway. Quarter lacteal secretions from cases that occurred prepartum or within 14 d postpartum were examined bacteriologically. The study included 1040 heifers with clinical mastitis, and the total number of quarters that were clinically affected was 1361. The organisms that were most frequently isolated from samples from these quarters were Staphylococcus aureus (44.3%), Streptococcus dysgalactiae (18.2%), Staph. aureus together with Strep. dysgalactiae (1.2%), coagulase-negative staphylococci (12.8%), Arcanobacterium pyogenes (3.5%), A. pyogenes together with Strep. dysgalactiae (0.5%) or Staph. aureus (0.4%), and Escherichia coli (6.4%). Of the coagulase-negative staphylococci, Staphylococcus simulans (53.7%), Staphylococcus hyicus (14.8%), and Staphylococcus chromogenes (14.8%) were the most prevalent species. Except for a higher relative percentage of A. pyogenes in cases that occurred before parturition (8.2%) than in cases that occurred after parturition (2.7%), no significant differences were observed in the distribution of the various organisms among prepartum and postpartum cases. Regional variations were observed in the distribution of organisms. The proportions of Staph. aureus and A. pyogenes were highest, and the proportion of coagulase-negative staphylococci was lowest, in late autumn and early winter. The proportion of E. coli was highest in summer. In heifers in which mastitis was associated with increased rectal temperature or other systemic signs, the proportion of clinically affected quarters that were infected with Staph. aureus was larger than that in heifers without systemic reaction.  相似文献

A study was conducted in 2 dairy research herds to determine whether prepartum therapy of heifer mammary glands with penicillin-novobiocin or pirlimycin hydrochloride was effective for reducing the percentage of heifers and mammary quarters infected with mastitis pathogens during early lactation. Almost 96% of Jersey heifers (67 of 70) and 71.3% of quarters (199 of 279) were infected 14 d before expected calving. Of the quarters infected at 14 d before expected parturition, 75% (54 of 72) were uninfected following treatment with penicillin-novobiocin; 87% (61 of 70) were uninfected following treatment with pirlimycin, and 56% (32 of 57) were uninfected in the untreated negative control group. The majority of intramammary infections in Jersey heifers were due to coagulase-negative staphylococci (61%), Streptococcus species, primarily Streptococcus uberis (19%), and Staphylococcus aureus (8%). Almost 73% of Holstein heifers (40 of 55) and 34.3% of mammary quarters (73 of 213) were infected 14 d before expected calving. Of the quarters infected at 14 d before expected parturition, 76% (19 of 25) were uninfected following treatment with penicillin-novobiocin; 59% (17 of 29) were uninfected following treatment with pirlimycin, and 26% (5 of 19) were uninfected in the untreated negative control group. The majority of intramammary infections in Holstein heifers were due to coagulase-negative staphylococci (44%) and Staph. aureus (30%). In both herds, the bacteriological cure rate was significantly higher in heifer mammary glands treated with penicillin-novobiocin or pirlimycin hydrochloride than in untreated controls. Prepartum therapy of heifer mammary glands with penicillin-novobiocin or pirlimycin hydrochloride significantly reduced the percentage of heifers and quarters infected with mastitis pathogens during early lactation.  相似文献

The prevalence of intramammary infections (IMI) and subclinical mastitis (SCM) in 436 German Holstein heifers was put in relation with clinical findings of the udder and data regarding individual rearing and housing conditions of the animals. The clinical examination took place on the day of the livestock auction (at approximately 41 d in milk, DIM). On that day, 31% of the heifers had IMI in at least one quarter, and 18% of all quarters were infected. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were the most prevalent bacteria isolated, accounting for 68% of the positive samples. Data were analysed by logistic regression. Criteria such as 'juvenile intersucking', 'teats shorter than 35 mm', 'teats with a diameter <18 mm' and 'udder oedema at the day of the auction' were associated with IMI in heifers during the first 41 DIM. Loose-housing systems during pregnancy (as opposed to tie-stalls), juvenile intersucking, clinical mastitis during the first week after calving, teat diameters <18 mm, and employing organic bedding material in the stables before calving were associated with subclinical mastitis.  相似文献

Intramammary infections (IMI) are common in primigravid dairy heifers and can negatively affect future milk production. Bismuth subnitrate-based internal teat sealants (ITS) have been used to prevent prepartum IMI in dairy heifers by creating a physical barrier within the teat, preventing pathogens from entering the gland, though determination of when to administer ITS in heifers has yet to be investigated. The objectives of this study were to determine if administration of ITS in primigravid heifers reduced the odds of IMI at calving and if administration of ITS at different stages of gestation (75 vs. 35 d prepartum) affected the odds of IMI at calving. A total of 270 heifers were used at a single farm. One quarter of each heifer was randomly chosen to be aseptically sampled and administered ITS 75 d prepartum (ITS75), another quarter of each heifer was sampled and received ITS 35 d prepartum (ITS35), whereas the remaining 2 quarters of each heifer served as control quarters (CON) and were not sampled before calving. Within 12 h of calving, aseptic colostrum samples were collected from all quarters to determine quarter infection status. When an IMI was caused by mastitis pathogens other than non-aureus staphylococci (NAS), CON quarters were 3 times [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.4–6.3] and 2.5 times (95% CI: 1.2–4.9) more likely to be infected at calving than ITS75 and ITS35 quarters, respectively. For IMI with NAS, CON quarters were 5.8 (95% CI: 3.2–10.5) and 6.4 (95% CI: 3.4–12.0) times more likely to be infected than ITS75 and ITS35 quarters, respectively. Odds of IMI at calving was similar between ITS75 and ITS35 quarters for both NAS (odds ratio = 0.9) and other pathogens (odds ratio = 1.2). Results indicate that ITS administration at either 75 and 35 d prepartum reduced IMI prevalence at calving in primigravid dairy heifers. Farm specific factors may influence prevalence and timing of heifer IMI and earlier administration of ITS provides an extended period of protection for the developing gland.  相似文献

Prepartum intramammary antibiotic infusion of heifer mammary glands at 7 or 14 d before expected parturition is an effective procedure for eliminating many infections in heifers during late gestation and for reducing the prevalence of mastitis in heifers during early lactation and throughout lactation. Mastitis pathogens were isolated from 76% of samples obtained from untreated control quarters 7 d before expected calving, from 47% of samples obtained 3 d after calving, and from 29% of samples obtained 10 d postpartum. Mastitis pathogens were isolated from about 30% of control quarters through 240 d of lactation. A similar percentage of samples (70%) was positive for mastitis pathogens at C-7 before antibiotic treatment. However, only 8% of samples obtained at 3 d after calving and 4% of samples obtained at 10 d postpartum from quarters of antibiotic-treated heifers contained mastitis pathogens. Throughout the remainder of lactation, mastitis pathogens were isolated from an average of about 11% of quarters. The percentage of samples with mastitis pathogens was higher in untreated controls than in antibiotic-treated quarters at all sampling intervals during lactation. A similar response was observed in heifers that were treated with antibiotics at 14 d before expected parturition. Prepartum antibiotic-treated heifers produced significantly more milk than control heifers and had significantly lower somatic cell count scores than untreated control heifers. These observations are likely associated with or due to the lower prevalence of mastitis pathogen isolation in prepartum antibiotic-treated heifers throughout lactation. Prepartum antibiotic-treated heifers produced 531 kg more milk than heifers in the untreated control group. Multiplying this increase by a milk price of 0.407 dollars/kg yielded a 216.24 dollars per-heifer increase in gross revenue. The cost of treatment, including the cost of testing for antibiotic residues, was estimated at 15.60 dollars for a net revenue of 200.64 dollars per heifer. Prepartum antibiotic treatment to reduce the rate of mastitis in heifers during lactation was highly effective and economically beneficial.  相似文献

Prevalence of intramammary infection was determined for 382 primigravid heifers within 3 d postpartum on 11 Vermont dairy farms. Data collected during a 5-yr period are summarized. Duplicate quarter milk samples were cultured on tryptose-blood agar plates containing .1% esculin. Intramammary infections were diagnosed in 45.5% of the heifers and 18.7% of quarters. Staphylococcus species were the most prevalent bacteria isolated: they appeared in 25.4% of the heifers and 12.1% of quarters. Only 2.6% of the heifers were diagnosed with Staphylococcus aureus; 22.8% had udder infection caused by other staphylococcal species. Environmental mastitis pathogens, coliforms, and streptococci other than Streptococcus agalactiae were isolated from 14.9% of the heifers and 4.8% of quarters. The prevalence of mastitis among these primigravid heifers at parturition indicates a need to improve methods of diagnosis and control programs.  相似文献

Milk samples were taken from 1920 quarters (480 cows, six herds) on four occasions to examine the relationship between quarter level intramammary infection (IMI) during the dry period and clinical mastitis in the next lactation. All quarters were sampled at drying off and within 1 wk of calving, and two quarters from each cow were sampled both 0 to 7 and 8 to 14 d before calving. Milk samples were collected from all cases of clinical mastitis during the following lactation. Logistic regression models were developed to investigate the associations between IMI present during the sampling period and clinical mastitis. The probability of a quarter succumbing to clinical mastitis increased when Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, or Enterobacter spp. were cultured at drying off and when Escherichia coli, coagulase-positive staphylococcus, Serratia spp., or Streptococcus faecalis were cultured in two out of three late dry and post-calving samples. Quarters from which Corynebacterium spp. were isolated at drying off were at an increased risk of clinical mastitis, whereas the presence of Corynebacterium spp. in the late dry and post-calving samples was associated with a reduction in the risk of clinical mastitis. The risk of mastitis for specific pathogens increased if the same species of bacteria that had caused mastitis was isolated at least twice in the late dry and post-calving samples. Kaplan-Meier survival plots indicated that clinical mastitis associated with dry period infections was more likely to occur earlier in lactation than clinical mastitis not associated with dry period infections. There was evidence of quarter susceptibility to IMI or the possibility that infection with one organism led to clinical mastitis with another.  相似文献

Heifer mastitis is a well-known problem, with several pathogens being involved. Several generic risk factors associated with the likelihood of intramammary infections (IMI) in fresh dairy heifers have been identified before. Yet, a need exists to identify pathogen group-specific factors, as the effect of (groups of) pathogens on udder health and milk yield is different. The aim of the present study was to identify pathogen group-specific risk factors for IMI in heifers participating in a prepartum antimicrobial treatment trial, allowing us to test the hypothesis that different factors are of importance between treated and untreated control heifers as well. Data from a clinical trial in which end-term heifers were treated systemically (over 3 consecutive days) 2 wk before calving with penethamate hydriodide (n = 76) or remained untreated (n = 73), were available. Several potential risk factors at the herd, heifer, and quarter level were recorded in the first 3 d in milk. Quarters from untreated heifers supplemented with ≥4 mg of selenium/d prepartum were significantly less likely to be infected with coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), whereas quarters were more likely to be infected with CNS when assistance during calving was needed. Udder edema before calving significantly decreased the odds of IMI with major pathogens. In treated heifers, no factors were detected that were associated with the likelihood of CNS IMI, whereas quarters from heifers were significantly more likely to be infected with major pathogens when they were housed in the calving pen more than 1 d and when they had been in contact with the lactating cows before calving. The risk factors for IMI that were identified in treated heifers were different than those in untreated heifers, independent of the pathogen group that was considered. It looks as if prepartum treatment not only changed the likelihood of infection, but also the factors that were associated with infection. However, except for treated heifers with an IMI with major pathogens, only a small proportion of the variation could be explained in the final models. Therefore, factors other than those that were studied could explain the likelihood of infection.  相似文献

This study investigated the effect of infusion of a bismuth subnitrate teat canal sealant or an injectable antibiotic, or both, in heifers on the cure of existing intramammary infection (IMI), incidence of new IMI, prevalence of postcalving IMI, and incidence of clinical mastitis in the first 2 wk postcalving at the quarter level. Heifers (n = 1,067) in 30 seasonally calving, pasture-fed dairy herds were randomly assigned at the heifer level to 1 of 4 treatments (no treatment; 3 intramuscular injections of 5 g of tylosin antibiotic at 24-h intervals; infusion of a teat sealant into all 4 quarters; 3 intramuscular injections of 5 g of tylosin antibiotic and infusion of teat sealant into all 4 quarters). Mammary gland secretion samples were collected from each quarter of every heifer before treatment. Heifers within a herd were enrolled on one calendar day, 27 d (on average) before the planned start of the seasonal calving period. Duplicate milk samples were collected from each gland within 5 d after calving for bacterial culture and from glands the herdowners diagnosed as having clinical mastitis. The relative risk of effect of treatment on the incidence of cure, incidence of new IMI, prevalence of postcalving IMI, and incidence of clinical mastitis were calculated at the gland level using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Neither infusion of a teat sealant nor treatment with the injectable antibiotic increased the cure of precalving IMI. Infusion of the teat sealant reduced the risk of new IMI with any pathogen by 74%, reduced the prevalence of postcalving IMI by 65%, reduced the risk of new infection with Streptococcus uberis by 70% in quarters with an IMI precalving, and reduced the incidence of clinical mastitis from which a pathogen was isolated by 70% in quarters with an IMI precalving. Parenteral antibiotic treatment had no effect on any of these outcomes. In conclusion, use of an internal teat-canal sealant in heifers reduced the postcalving IMI prevalence and the incidence of pathogen-associated clinical mastitis postcalving by decreasing the incidence of new infections over this high-risk peripartum period, and may be a useful tool for reducing the risk of mastitis in heifers.  相似文献

An observational field study was conducted on 708 heifers in 30 spring-calving dairy herds in the Waikato region of New Zealand. The aim of the study was to describe patterns and effects of intramammary infection (IMI) and clinical mastitis (CM) in the peripartum period. Mammary secretion samples for bacteriological testing were taken from all quarters approximately 3 wk before the planned start of the calving period and within 5 d following calving, in addition to quarters diagnosed with CM within 14 d of calving. Precalving IMI was diagnosed in 18.5% of quarters, and of these, coagulase-negative staphylococci were the predominant isolate (13.5% of quarters). Streptococcus uberis prevalence increased 4-fold to 10.0% of quarters on the day of calving compared with the precalving period. Prevalence of all pathogens decreased rapidly following calving. Clinical mastitis cases were predominantly associated with Strep. uberis (64%). The daily hazard of diagnosis was higher in heifers than in cows (0.06 vs. 0.02/d on d 1 postcalving, respectively), but was not different by d 5 (0.005 vs. 0.002, respectively) of lactation. Intramammary infection with a major pathogen was associated with an increased risk of removal from the herd (15 vs. 10% for infected and noninfected heifers, respectively) and somatic cell count >200,000 cells/mL at subsequent herd tests (15 vs. 8%), but neither CM nor IMI were associated with reduced milk yield or milk solids production. Results suggest that bacterial species involved and the pattern of IMI prevalence in pasture-grazed peripartum heifers differ from those in other production systems. Further, mastitis control programs need to target major environmental pathogens causing precalving IMI, because new infections are likely before the onset of lactation, whereas existing detection and control measures are generally implemented after calving. Novel control programs that reduce new infections due to Strep. uberis immediately before calving are required to reduce the incidence of CM in pasture-grazed dairy heifers.  相似文献

The effects of treating subclinical mastitis with intramammary infusions of either a Lactobacillus or an antibiotic preparation on intramammary infection cure rate and on milk SCC were compared. Cows with two consecutive monthly DHIA composite SCC greater than 300,000 cells/ml (5.4771 log10/ml) were defined as high SCC cows. Twenty-six subclinical cows were randomly assigned to one of two treatments. Quarter foremilk samples were obtained from all quarters at d 0, 7, and 14 following infusion to determine the microbiological status and SCC. Composite milk SCC were determined monthly by DHIA and at d 0, 7, and 14 of the study. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were the predominantly isolated pathogens. Treatment of cows with Lactobacillus cured 21.7% of infected quarters, whereas 73.7% of infections treated with antibiotic were eliminated. Treatment of quarters with antibiotic did not reduce quarter SCC unless infected quarters were cured. Intramammary infusion of quarters with Lactobacillus increased quarter SCC, mainly because of an increase in SCC of initially uninfected, low SCC quarters. Monthly composite SCC were similar between treatments. The results indicate that administering Lactobacillus or antibiotic treatment to all quarters based on elevated composite SCC should not be adopted. Lactobacillus treatment increased SCC with no effect on infection rate.  相似文献

Intramammary infections (IMI) in recently calved dairy heifers are more common than was formerly believed but their relevance for future performance has been studied only rarely. In the present study, the association between the IMI status of fresh heifers and their subsequent udder health, milk production, and culling in first lactation was explored. Quarter milk samples were collected between 1 and 4 d in milk (DIM) and between 5 and 8 DIM from 191 dairy heifers in 20 dairy herds for bacteriological culturing and somatic cell count (SCC) analysis. Monthly milk recording data including composite milk SCC and test-day milk yield (MY) were obtained for the first 285 DIM or until culling. Farmer-recorded clinical mastitis cases were available. Data were analyzed using mixed models and survival analysis. Approximately 80% of the fresh heifers (79.8%) had at least one culture-positive quarter. Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were the most frequently isolated pathogens (72%), followed by esculin-positive streptococci (4.6%) and Staphylococcus aureus (3.5%). Overall geometric mean SCC at quarter level decreased between the first and second samplings from 348,000 to 116,000 cells/mL. Heifers infected with CNS had an intermediate average test-day SCC (84,000 cells/mL) during the first 285 DIM compared with noninfected heifers (53,000 cells/mL) and heifers infected with major pathogens (195,000 cells/mL). Heifers infected with major pathogens had a much lower average daily MY (18.3 kg) during first lactation compared with noninfected animals (21.3 kg). That CNS-infected heifers out-produced their noninfected counterparts could be at least partially explained by their significantly lower incidence of clinical mastitis (incidence risk 3.6 vs. 21.0%) during first lactation compared with noninfected heifers. We conclude that although CNS cause the majority of IMI in heifers around calving, they should not be a reason for serious concern.  相似文献

Infusion of either a long-acting antibiotic preparation (cefalonium) or the same antibiotic preparation combined with an internal teat sealant (bismuth subnitrite) were compared for the effect on new intramammary infections at calving and clinical mastitis in the first 100 d of lactation, in relation to dry period length. For all cows, a significant reduction in the incidence of new infections in quarters at calving (3.7 vs. 7.3%) was found for the combination treatment group (150 cows) compared with the antibiotic-alone treatment (133 cows). With a dry period of 10 wk or longer, significantly fewer new quarter infections (3.8 vs. 11.4%) were found in those cows receiving the combination treatment compared with antibiotic treatment alone. When the dry period was less than 10 wk, the incidence of new infections in quarters treated with the combination treatment was lower than for the antibiotic treatment alone (3.7 vs. 6%) but this was not a statistically significant difference. Fewer infections caused by Streptococcus uberis and coagulase-negative staphylococci were found in cows receiving the combination treatment compared with the antibiotic treatment alone (not significant). Coliform isolates were less likely in cows receiving the combination treatment with the longer dry period but the numbers of new intramammary coliform infections were low for both dry period categories. Few infections were caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci. The incidence of clinical mastitis in the first 100 d of lactation in quarters infected at calving was significantly lower (4 vs. 15 cases) for the combination treatment than for the antibiotic treatment alone for both dry period lengths. The clinical incidence in quarters in which a pathogen was not detected in either of the samples taken after calving was comparable between groups. No significant difference was found in the total clinical incidence after calving for both groups irrespective of dry period length.  相似文献

The hypothesis tested was that there are differences in pathogenicity between strains of Staphylococcus aureus that cause bovine mastitis. Mammary quarter milk somatic cell count (SCC) and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAGase) activity were used as indicators of the pathogenicity of different strains of S. aureus that infect the bovine udder. Eight commercial dairy herds with a history of S. aureus in bulk tank milk cultures were studied. Initially, composite foremilk samples were collected from all lactating cattle in each herd and cultured for staphylococci. Subsequently, all cows with a coagulase-positive staphylococcal intramammary infection (IMI) at the initial sampling that were still present in the herd of origin had individual mammary quarter foremilk samples collected. Coagulase-positive staphylococcal isolates were confirmed as S. aureus using a commercial biotyping system. Staphylococcus aureus isolates were strain-typed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Mammary quarter milk SCC and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity were determined for each cow. The difference in mean somatic cell count and mean NAGase activity for mammary quarters infected with the same strain of S. aureus and for uninfected quarters on the same cow was calculated. One-way analysis of variance was used to assess differences between strains within a herd. Overall, no significant differences were found between strains, suggesting that the degree of udder parenchymal injury induced by S. aureus IMI is in general significantly affected by factors other than strain type.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the risk of clinical mastitis in the first 120 d in lactation based on previous somatic cell count (SCC) history in a herd with a very low prevalence of contagious pathogens. A total of 218 cows from a university herd were enrolled at dry-off. Duplicate quarter milk samples were collected from all quarters at dry-off, postcalving (2 to 9 d in milk), and before treatment of all first cases of clinical mastitis that occurred during the first 120 d of the subsequent lactation. Quarter SCC statuses across the dry period were defined based on comparison of quarter SCC between the date of dry-off and the postcalving sampling periods. The relationship between the probability of developing clinical mastitis in the first 120 d of lactation and SCC status across the dry period and other explanatory variables was assessed using logistic regression. In the first 120 d postcalving, 68 first cases of clinical mastitis occurred in 47 cows. Of quarters that experienced a microbiologically positive clinical case, the same microorganism was never isolated from milk samples obtained at dry-off or consistently isolated from milk samples collected at all sampling periods. Coagulase negative staphylococci were the most prevalent pathogens isolated from subclinical intramammary infection, whereas gram-negative pathogens were the most common pathogen associated with clinical cases. Quarters that had at least 1 case of mastitis during the previous lactation were 4.2 times more likely to have a first case of clinical mastitis in the current lactation than quarters that did not have clinical mastitis in the previous lactation [odds ratio (OR) = 4.2 (1.8, 10.0)]. Quarters of cows of greater than fourth parity were 4.2 times more likely to have a first case of clinical mastitis than quarters of cows of second parity [OR = 4.2 (1.4, 10.0)]. The primary objective of the current study was to evaluate cure rate following an early-lactation extended intramammary pirlimycin treatment on heifers naturally infected by Staphylococcus aureus. The secondary objective was to assess Petrifilm Staph Express (3M Microbiology, St. Paul, MN) count plate characteristics when used in a protocol for early-lactation detection of infected quarters in heifers. Milk samples were collected from heifers (n = 946) in the first few days following calving (mean = 5 d). Heifers with laboratory-confirmed S. aureus intramammary infection (n = 72) were randomly allocated into 2 groups. The treatment group (n = 54 quarters from 38 heifers) received an intramammary infusion of 50 mg of pirlimycin once per day for 8 consecutive days in infected quarters. The control group (n = 44 quarters from 34 heifers) did not receive any treatment. Treatment success was defined as having negative culture results for S. aureus in all 3 post-treatment quarter milk samples collected on d 17, 24, and 31 post-treatment. Treatment group mammary quarters showed a statistically significant higher cure rate (64.8%) compared with the control group (34.1%). A total of 38% of quarters identified as S. aureus-positive using the Petrifilm Staph Express count plate were in fact identified as non-aureus staphylococci on routine laboratory-based bacteriological culture. The current study demonstrates that a higher cure rate for S. aureus IMI can be achieved in dairy heifers if an extended treatment protocol is put in place soon after calving. Use of Petrifilm Staph Express count plate for identification of S. aureus-infected heifers could lead to unnecessary treatments because of false-positive results.  相似文献

Selective use of antibiotic dry cow treatment can be implemented at the cow or quarter level, with the latter having the potential to further reduce antibiotic use. Our objective was to compare these 2 approaches in 6 herds in the United Kingdom in which environmental mastitis predominated. Eight hundred seven cows were enrolled and categorized as having a high cell count (n = 401) or low cell count (n = 406) in the last 3 mo of lactation and clinical mastitis history. All quarters of all enrolled cows received an internal teat sealant. Within each category, cows were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 groups; in one group antibiotic treatment was allocated at cow level (i.e., all 4 quarters received antibiotic), whereas in the 2 remaining groups antibiotic treatment was allocated at quarter level, based on California Mastitis Test (CMT) findings. Two different thresholds, score 1 and 2, were used to determine likely infection status. Quarter milk samples were collected at dry off and postcalving for bacteriological culture and somatic cell count (SCC). Cows were monitored for clinical mastitis from dry off until 100 d in milk. Cow level SCC and milk yield data were collated from farm records. Within each category, the 2 quarter level treatment groups were compared with cow level treatment at dry off. Leaving quarters untreated with intramammary antibiotic in cows in the high cell count group, with a CMT <2 or <1, reduced antibiotic use by 55% and 31%, respectively, and resulted in no difference in the odds of being infected with any pathogen postcalving, but was associated with a higher SCC at the first test day. Intramammary antibiotic treatment of quarters with a CMT ≥1 in cows in the low cell count category at dry off was not associated with any reduction in the odds of being infected with a major pathogen postcalving but was associated with a decrease in the odds of being infected with a minor mastitis pathogen postcalving. The use of antibiotics in quarters of cows categorized as low cell count at dry off, increased the proportion of quarters treated with antibiotic from 0% at cow level to 31% (CMT ≥ 1) and 12% (CMT ≥ 2) at quarter level, only resulting in a reduction in SCC of around 20,000 cells/mL at the first test day, if all quarters with CMT score ≥1 were treated with antibiotic. No differences in clinical mastitis incidence and milk yield in the first 100 d in milk were detected between any of the treatment groups. These study findings support selective quarter level dry off treatment only in cows with cow level SCC >200,000 cells/mL at dry off.  相似文献

The intramuscular administration of penethamate hydriodide over 3 consecutive days and the intramammary administration of an ampicillin/cloxacillin combination were compared in lactating cows suffering from infectious clinical mastitis in one quarter, through an open, randomized, controlled multicenter field trial. Clinical examinations were carried out on d 1 (immediately before treatment), 3, 8, 17, and 22. Milk samples were taken from affected quarters for bacteriological analysis on d 1, 17, and 22, and from all quarters for somatic cell count (SCC) determination on d 1, 8, 17, and 22. There was no significant difference in bacteriological and clinical cure rates between the 2 treatment groups. The systemic treatment with penethamate resulted more frequently in a reduction of the milk SCC below the threshold of 250,000 cells/mL. This also occurred in the adjacent quarters not affected by clinical mastitis but with an SCC above 250,000 cells/mL before treatment. These findings suggest that the parenteral treatment with penethamate provides collateral cure on the quarters of the cows affected by subclinical mastitis. The number of quarters per cow affected by clinical or subclinical mastitis should be considered when selecting an antibiotic treatment by the local or systemic route.  相似文献

Teat canal keratin (n = 461) and mammary gland secretions (n = 370) were collected from 31 unbred and 85 primigravid Jersey heifers from one research and three commercial dairy herds. Of 97 heifers from which secretion samples were obtained, 96.9% had intramammary infections and 29% showed clinical symptoms. Seventy-five percent of quarters were infected. Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from 36 (37.1%) heifers and 55 (14.9%) quarters. One hundred and eight (93.1%) heifers and 326 (70.7%) quarters had teat canals colonized with mastitis pathogens. Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from teat canal keratin samples from 36 (31%) heifers and 57 (12.3%) quarters. The three most common species isolated from secretion and teat canal keratin samples were Staphylococcus chromogenes, Staphylococcus hyicus, and S. aureus. Secretions from infected (n = 240) and uninfected (n = 85) quarters had SCC of 13.6 X 10(6)/ml and 5.7 X 10(6)/ml. Macrophages were the most numerous cell type in secretions of infected and uninfected quarters. Quarters with teat canal colonization, but with no intramammary infections, exhibited higher SCC in secretion (9.3 X 10(6)/ml) than quarters without both teat canal colonizations and intramammary infections (4.9 X 10(6)/ml). Data indicated that intramammary infections and teat canal colonizations were more prevalent and SCC higher than previously realized in dairy heifers.  相似文献
