The objective of software engineering is modeling software systems to support effective system synthesis and analysis. The traditional approach is using semi-formal models and accompanying design methodologies. Formal models represent an alternative to semi-formal models supporting precise representation and proof capabilities. These two approaches are complimentary, not competitive. Formal methods have had difficulty finding their way into the software engineering lifecycle. Although excellent CASE tools exist to support semi-formal methods, tools for formal methods support have yet to emerge. Although model checkers, proof tools and the like exist for formal models, they provide little support for the software lifecycle. Traditional CASE environments provide little or no support for formal models. In addition, formal methods and the mathematics necessary to support them have not found their way into standard software engineering curriculum. Thus, formal methods practitioners have found it difficult to present their work in some industrial settings. Using formal and semi-formal methods together should satisfy both the need to predict behavior and have understandable system representations. Although this article presents only structured analysis, formal methods can contribute to virtually any semi-formal software engineering methodology in the same manner  相似文献

Several approaches to teaching undergraduate physics and engineering students using both the Dunn and Dunn and the Kolb learning style models are discussed. The Dunn and Dunn learning style model is employed with nonmajors enrolled in introductory physics at American University and the Kolb learning style model is employed with freshman engineering students at Purdue University. The basic elements of these two learning style models are compared and contrasted. Teaching approaches that have been successful with these two distinctly different populations of students are shared. Misalignment of the eyes (strabismus) is commonly treated by surgical manipulation of the extraocular muscles. The high failure rate of such surgery has led to the application of engineering methods in diagnosis and surgical planning. Computer models of orbital statics can now aid in diagnosis, and can help predict the outcome of surgery. Methods have been developed to collect biophysical data to customize the models for particular patients. Such biomechanical models will become increasingly important in clinical practice. Nevertheless, the heuristics employed by expert strabismus surgeons will not soon be reduced to algorithms Knowledge engineering methods are needed to explicate and disseminate the reasoning of experts in their own terms. Such an expert system could make use of a biomechanical model to explore hypotheses, much as human experts do now. Such a hybrid system might effectively advise surgeons on how to treat individual cases.  相似文献

Out of the needs of man brought about by automation, the population explosion, the expansion of human expectations, continued peace in the world, and scientific discovery are derived the influences on engineering practice and electrical engineering education for the next decade. Scientific discovery and the provision of quantitative models for environmental systems will have a profound effect on the profession. In engineering education, research in pedagogy, especially in terms of the expanded use of audio-visual methods and computer-aided instruction, will alter the teaching of engineering as it is known today.  相似文献

The authors discuss power system engineering applications of linear programming and indicate the potential for its future use. Applications are outlined in three areas: generation scheduling, loss minimization through allocation of reactive power supply, and planning of capital investments in generation equipment. It is recommended that power system planning models should incorporate financial flows with the linear programming approach to capital budgeting originally formulated in 1963 by H.M. Weingartner. The need for such an approach is illustrated with examples of how capital market conditions can upset the type of engineering economic decision making currently used in planning models. The Lagrangian relaxation method, which can extend computational feasibility for linear and integer programming, is also described  相似文献
