Event-based systems are seen as good candidates for supporting distributed applications in dynamic and ubiquitous environments because they support decoupled and asynchronous one-to-many and many-to-many information dissemination. Event systems are widely used because asynchronous messaging provides a flexible alternative to RPC. They are typically implemented using an overlay network of routers. A content-based router forwards event messages based on filters that are installed by subscribers and other routers. This paper addresses the optimization of content-based routing tables organized using the covering relation and presents novel configurations for improving local and distributed operation. We present the poset-derived forest data structure and variants that perform considerably better under frequent filter additions and removals than existing data structures. The results offer a significant performance increase to currently known covering-based routing mechanisms. We study the problem of segmenting a sequence into k pieces so that the resulting segmentation satisfies monotonicity or unimodality constraints. Unimodal functions can be used to model phenomena in which a measured variable first increases to a certain level and then decreases. We combine a well-known unimodal regression algorithm with a simple dynamic-programming approach to obtain an optimal quadratic-time algorithm for the problem of unimodal k-segmentation. In addition, we describe a more efficient greedy-merging heuristic that is experimentally shown to give solutions very close to the optimal. As a concrete application of our algorithms, we describe methods for testing if a sequence behaves unimodally or not. The methods include segmentation error comparisons, permutation testing, and a BIC-based scoring scheme. Our experimental evaluation shows that our algorithms and the proposed unimodality tests give very intuitive results, for both real-valued and binary data. With the development of the Internet,the World Web has become an invaluable information source for most organizations,However,most documents available from the Web are in HTML form which is originally designed for document formatting with little consideration of its contents.Effectively extracting data from such documents remains a non-trivial task.In this paper,we present a schema-guided approach to extracting data from HTML pages .Under the approach,the user defines a schema specifying what to be extracted and provides sample mappings between the schema and th HTML page.The system will induce the mapping rules and generate a wrapper that takes the HTML page as input and produces the required datas in the form of XML conforming to the use-defined schema .A prototype system implementing the approach has been developed .The preliminary experiments indicate that the proposed semi-automatic approach is not only easy to use but also able to produce a wrapper that extracts required data from inputted pages with high accuracy.  相似文献

XML has already become the de facto standard for specifying and exchanging data on the Web. However, XML is by nature verbose and thus XML documents are usually large in size, a factor that hinders its practical usage, since it substantially increases the costs of storing, processing, and exchanging data. In order to tackle this problem, many XML-specific compression systems, such as XMill, XGrind, XMLPPM, and Millau, have recently been proposed. However, these systems usually suffer from the following two inadequacies: They either sacrifice performance in terms of compression ratio and execution time in order to support a limited range of queries, or perform full decompression prior to processing queries over compressed documents.In this paper, we address the above problems by exploiting the information provided by a Document Type Definition (DTD) associated with an XML document. We show that a DTD is able to facilitate better compression as well as generate more usable compressed data to support querying. We present the architecture of the XCQ, which is a compression and querying tool for handling XML data. XCQ is based on a novel technique we have developed called DTD Tree and SAX Event Stream Parsing (DSP). The documents compressed by XCQ are stored in Partitioned Path-Based Grouping (PPG) data streams, which are equipped with a Block Statistics Signature (BSS) indexing scheme. The indexed PPG data streams support the processing of XML queries that involve selection and aggregation, without the need for full decompression. In order to study the compression performance of XCQ, we carry out comprehensive experiments over a set of XML benchmark datasets. Internet video streaming is a widely popular application however, in many cases, congestion control facilities are not well integrated into such applications. In order to be fair to other users that do not stream video, rate adaptation should be performed to respond to congestion. On the other hand, the effect of rate adaptation on the viewer should be minimized and this extra mechanism should not overload the client and the server. In this paper, we develop a heuristic approach for unicast congestion control. The primary feature of our approach is the two level adaptation algorithm that utilizes packet loss rate as well as receiver buffer data to maintain satisfactory buffer levels at the receiver. This is particularly important if receiver has limited buffer such as in mobile devices. When there is no congestion, to maintain best buffer levels, fine grain adjustments are carried out at the packet level. Depending on the level of congestion and receiver buffer level, rate shaping that involves frame discard and finally rate adaptation by switching to a different pre-encoded video stream are carried out. Additive increase multiplicative decrease policy is maintained to respond to congestion in a TCP- friendly manner. The algorithm is implemented and performance results show that it has adaptation ability that is suitable for both local area and wide area networks. E. Turhan Tunali received B.Sc. With the explosive growth of the Internet and World Wide Web comes a dramatic increase in the number of users that compete for the shared resources of distributed system environments. Most implementations of application servers and distributed search software do not distinguish among requests to different web pages. This has the implication that the behavior of application servers is quite unpredictable. Applications that require timely delivery of fresh information consequently suffer the most in such competitive environments. This paper presents a model of quality of service (QoS) and the design of a QoS-enabled information delivery system that implements such a QoS model. The goal of this development is two-fold. On one hand, we want to enable users or applications to specify the desired quality of service requirements for their requests so that application-aware QoS adaptation is supported throughout the Web query and search processing. On the other hand, we want to enable an application server to customize how it should respond to external requests by setting priorities among query requests and allocating server resources using adaptive QoS control mechanisms. We introduce the Infopipe approach as the systems support architecture and underlying technology for building a QoS-enabled distributed system for fresh information delivery. Ling Liu, Ph.D.: She is an associate professor at the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology. She received her Ph.D. from Tilburg University, The Netherlands in 1993. Her research interests are in the area of large-scale data intensive systems and its applications in distributed, mobile, multimedia, and Internet computing environments. Her work has focused on systems support for creating, searching, manipulating, and monitoring streams of information in wide area networked information systems. She has published more than 70 papers in internal journals or international conferences, and has served on more than 20 program committees in the area of data engineering, databases, and knowledge and information management. Calton Pu, Ph. D.: He is a Professor and John P. Imlay, Jr. Chair in Software at the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology. Calton received his Ph.D. from University of Washington in 1986. He leads the Infosphere expedition project, which is building the system software to support the next generation information flow applications. Infosphere research includes adaptive operating system kernels, communications middleware, and distributed information flow applications. His past research included operating system projects such as Synthetix and Microfeedback, extended transaction projects such as Epsilon Serializability, and Internet data management. Karsten Schwan, Ph.D.: He is a professor in the College of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His current research addresses the interactive nature of modern high performance applications (i.e., online monitoring and computational steering), the development of efficient and object-based middleware, the operating system support for distributed and parallel programs, and the online configuration of applications for distributed real-time applications and for communication protocols. Jonathan Walpole, Ph.D.: He is a Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Lancaster University, U.K. in 1987. His research interests are in the area of adaptive systems software and its application in distributed, mobile, multimedia computing environments. The STAMP model addresses the dynamic generation of multimedia presentations in the domain of Multimedia Web-based Information Systems. STAMP allows the presentation of multimedia data obtained from XML compatible data sources by means of query. Assuming that the size and the nature of the elements of information provided by a data source is not known a priori, STAMP proposes templates which describe the spatial, temporal, navigational structuration of multimedia presentations whose content varies. The instantiation of a template is done with respect to the set of spatial and temporal constraints associated with the delivery context. A set of adaptations preserving the initial intention of the presentation is proposed.Ioan Marius Bilasco is a Ph.D. student at the University Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France, since 2003. Outlier detection is concerned with discovering exceptional behaviors of objects. Its theoretical principle and practical implementation lay a foundation for some important applications such as credit card fraud detection, discovering criminal behaviors in e-commerce, discovering computer intrusion, etc. In this paper, we first present a unified model for several existing outlier detection schemes, and propose a compatibility theory, which establishes a framework for describing the capabilities for various outlier formulation schemes in terms of matching users'intuitions. Under this framework, we show that the density-based scheme is more powerful than the distance-based scheme when a dataset contains patterns with diverse characteristics. The density-based scheme, however, is less effective when the patterns are of comparable densities with the outliers. We then introduce a connectivity-based scheme that improves the effectiveness of the density-based scheme when a pattern itself is of similar density as an outlier. We compare density-based and connectivity-based schemes in terms of their strengths and weaknesses, and demonstrate applications with different features where each of them is more effective than the other. Finally, connectivity-based and density-based schemes are comparatively evaluated on both real-life and synthetic datasets in terms of recall, precision, rank power and implementation-free metrics. Semistructured information can be merged in a logic-based framework [6, 7]. This framework has been extended to deal with uncertainty, in the form of probability values, degrees of beliefs, or necessity measures, associated with leaves (i.e. textentries) in the XML documents [3]. In this paper we further extend this approach to modelling and merging uncertain information that is defined at different levels of granularity of XML textentries, and to modelling and reasoning with XML documents that contain semantically heterogeneous uncertain information on more complex elements in XML subtrees. We present the formal definitions for modelling, propagating and merging semantically heterogeneous uncertain information and explain how they can be handled using logic-based fusion techniques. Anthony Hunter received a B.Sc. (1984) from the University of Bristol and an M.Sc. (1987) and Ph.D. (1992) from Imperial College, London. He is currently a reader in the Department of Computer Science at University College London. His main research interests are: Knowledge representation and reasoning, Analysing inconsistency, Argumentation, Default reasoning and Knowledge Fusion. Weiru Liu is a senior lecturer at the School of Computer Science, Queen's University Belfast. She received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Computer Science from Jilin University, P.R China, and her Ph.D. degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. Her main research interests include reasoning under uncertainty, knowledge representation and reasoning, uncertain knowledge and information fusion, and knowledge discovery in databases. Aiming at the deficiency of conventional traffic control method, this paper proposes a new method based on multi-agent technology for traffic control. Different from many existing methods, this paper distinguishes traffic control on the basis of the agent technology from conventional traffic control method. The composition and structure of a multi-agent system (MAS) is first discussed. Then, the step-coordination strategies of intersection-agent, segment-agent, and area-agent are put forward. In mobile database systems,mobility of users has a significant impact on data replication.As a result,the various replica control protocols that exist today in traditional distributed and multidatabase environments are no longer suitable To solve this problem,a new mobile database replication scheme,the Transaction-Level Result-Set Propagation(TLRSP)model,is put forward in this paper,The conflict dectction and resolution strategy based on TLRSP is discussed in detail,and the implementation algorithm is proposed,In order to compare the performance of the TLRSP model with that of other mobile replication schemes,we have developed a detailde simulation model.Experimantal results show that the TLRSP model provides an effcient support for replicated mobile database systems by reducing reprocessing overhead and maintaining database consistency.  相似文献

Data mining can dig out valuable information from databases to assist a business in approaching knowledge discovery and improving business intelligence. Database stores large structured data. The amount of data increases due to the advanced database technology and extensive use of information systems. Despite the price drop of storage devices, it is still important to develop efficient techniques for database compression. This paper develops a database compression method by eliminating redundant data, which often exist in transaction database. The proposed approach uses a data mining structure to extract association rules from a database. Redundant data will then be replaced by means of compression rules. A heuristic method is designed to resolve the conflicts of the compression rules. To prove its efficiency and effectiveness, the proposed approach is compared with two other database compression methods. Chin-Feng Lee is an associate professor with the Department of Information Management at Chaoyang University of Technology, Taiwan, R.O.C. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in 1994 and 1998, respectively, from the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Chung Cheng University. His current research interests include electronic commerce, internet/database marketing, knowledge management, data mining, and decision support systems. In this paper, it is presented a novel approach for the self-sustained resonant accelerometer design, which takes advantages of an automatic gain control in achieving stabilized oscillation dynamics. Through the proposed system modeling and loop transformation, the feedback controller is designed to maintain uniform oscillation amplitude under dynamic input accelerations. The fabrication process for the mechanical structure is illustrated in brief. Computer simulation and experimental results show the feasibility of the proposed accelerometer design, which is applicable to a control grade inertial sense system. As the amount of multimedia data is increasing day-by-day thanks to cheaper storage devices and increasing number of information sources, the machine learning algorithms are faced with large-sized datasets. When original data is huge in size small sample sizes are preferred for various applications. This is typically the case for multimedia applications. But using a simple random sample may not obtain satisfactory results because such a sample may not adequately represent the entire data set due to random fluctuations in the sampling process. The difficulty is particularly apparent when small sample sizes are needed. Fortunately the use of a good sampling set for training can improve the final results significantly. In KDD’03 we proposed EASE that outputs a sample based on its ‘closeness’ to the original sample. Reported results show that EASE outperforms simple random sampling (SRS). In this paper we propose EASIER that extends EASE in two ways. (1) EASE is a halving algorithm, i.e., to achieve the required sample ratio it starts from a suitable initial large sample and iteratively halves. EASIER, on the other hand, does away with the repeated halving by directly obtaining the required sample ratio in one iteration. (2) EASE was shown to work on IBM QUEST dataset which is a categorical count data set. EASIER, in addition, is shown to work on continuous data of images and audio features. We have successfully applied EASIER to image classification and audio event identification applications. Experimental results show that EASIER outperforms SRS significantly. His research interests include machine learning and data mining, and their applications in bioinformatics, image processing, and GPU programming. Before joining School of Computer Engineering (SCE), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, as Assistant Professor, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Northwestern University. He is a member of IEEE and ACM. He has served as program committee member of many conferences and he is in the editorial board of “International journal of Theoretical and Applied Computer Science.” Liang-Tien Chia received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Loughborough University, in 1990 and 1994, respectively. He is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He has recently been appointed as Head, Division of Computer Communications and he also holds the position of Director, Centre for Multimedia and Network Technology. His research interests include image/video processing & coding, multimodal data fusion, multimedia adaptation/transmission and multimedia over the Semantic Web. Emerging parallel or distributed, heterogeneous real-time computer systems with many disparate constraints and requirements would benefit from a unifying and comprehensive systems engineering support in the design, testing and deployment phases, which interfaces with a human at a very high level and efficiently handles the system complexity. We present an approach to integration of (1) a compiler- and Constraint Logic Programming-based approach to design and engineering of real-time systems, and (2) an on-line performance analysis and visualization technology. An example distributed real-time system is used to help describe the integrated approach. Details are presented about how the involved technologies are used to help system developers and users achieve better system performance through on-line repair and reconfiguration. This paper presents an in-pipe robot, called MRINSPECT V (Multifunctional Robotic crawler for In-pipe inSPECTion V), which is under development for the inspection of pipelines with a nominal 8-inch inside diameter. To travel freely in every pipeline element, the robot adopts a differential driving mechanism that we have developed. Furthermore, by introducing clutches in transmitting driving power to the wheels, MRINSPECT V is able to select the suitable driving method according to the shape of the pipeline and save the energy to drive in pipelines. In this paper, the critical points in the design and construction of the proposed robot are described with the preliminary results that yield good mobility and increased efficiency. In modern VLSI technology, hundreds of thousands of arithmetic units fit on a 1cm^2 chip. The challenge is supplying them with instructions and data. Stream architecture is able to solve the problem well. However, the applications suited for typical stream architecture are limited. This paper presents the definition of regular stream and irregular stream, and then describes MASA (Multiple-morphs Adaptive Stream Architecture) prototype system which supports different execution models according to applications' stream characteristics. This paper first discusses MASA architecture and stream model, and then explores the features and advantages of MASA through mapping stream applications to hardware. Finally MASA is evaluated by ten benchmarks. The result is encouraging.  相似文献
