In this paper a numerical simulation of a spray dryer using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Fluent is described. This simulation is based on a discrete droplet model and solve the partial differential equations of momentum, heat and mass conservation for both gas and dispersed phase.

The model is used to simulate the behaviour of a pilot scale spray dryer operated with two drying media : superheated steam and air Considering that there is no risk of powder ignition in superheated steam, we choosed a rather high inlet temperature (973 K). For the simulation, drop size spectrum is represented by 6 discrete droplets diameters, fitting to an experimental droplets size distribution and all droplets are injected at the same velocity, equal to the calculated velocity of the liquid sheet at the nozzle orifice.

It is showed that the model can evaluate the most important features of a spray dryer : temperature distribution inside the chamber, velocity of gas, droplets trajectories as well as deposits on the walls. The model predicts a fast down flowing core jet surrounded by a large recirculation zone. Using superheated steam or air as a drying medium shows only slight differences in flow patterns. Except for the recirculation which is tighter in steam.

The general behaviour of droplets in air or steam are quite the same : smallest droplets are entrained by the central core and largest ones are taken into the recirculation zone. In superheated steam, the droplets penetrate to a greater extent in the recirculation zone. Also, they evaporate faster. The contours of gas temperature reflect these differences as these two aspects are strongly coupled. In both air and steam there is a “cool” zone which is narrower in steam than in air. Finally, the panicle deposit problem seems to be more pronounced in air than in steam.

Adding to the inherent interest in using superheated steam as a drying medium, the model predicts attractive behaviour for spray drying with superheated steam. In particular. under the conditions tested with the model, a higher volumetric drying rate is obtained in superheated steam.  相似文献

Model calculations illustrate the complex interactions between steam, particles and walls which occur in a flash dryer. The drying rate varies in a very complex manner through the dryer. The internal resistance to mass transfer becomes very important in The drying of less permeable wood species such as spruce. Two effects were observed as the particle size was increased: firstly the heat transfer rate decreased, and secondly the residence time increased. To some extent, these effects compensate for each other, however, the net result is that larger chips have a higher final moisture content.  相似文献

The literature during 2000–2016 about drying of biofuels from the forest has been reviewed. Biofuels constitute a low-cost energy resource that is likely to continue to increase and the dryers for such products should be simple, robust, and easy to operate. In 1970s and 1980s, rotary dryers and flash dryers were the most common types, and in 1990s, superheated steam (SHS) dryers became common. Maintenance costs and use of medium pressure steam for the SHS dryers are important topics to consider and one drawback for the rotary dryers is that high-temperature heat sources are used. The development during the last 15 years has moved toward moving bed dryers because of the possibility to use cheap low-temperature energy sources, robust design, and direct capacity control that is achieved by controlling the air temperature in the dryer. A price for the dry biofuel of 15–20 Euro/MWh has been indicated to make a dryer installation profitable based on no cost for the thermal energy and 40 Euro/MWh as the cost for the electrical energy. Shrinkage and the internal transport of moisture and heat in large particles of biofuels will need more considerations in the future. Fractionation of the biofuels, codrying with other products, the total cost for the drying process, environmental issues, and development of drying processes operating at high dew points are the other things to consider.  相似文献

This study applied a partial differential equation model with newly-developed thin layer equations to simulate batch re-circulating dryers under different drying conditions, which are combinations of four parameters: drying air temperature, drying air absolute humidity, drying period duration, and tempering period duration. The moisture change and the drying rate, which were of particular concern with respect to the simulated data, were investigated. Validation drying tests were carried out in a lab scale re-circulating rice dryer. Two sets of experiment were performed involving different drying parameters to simulate re-circulating rice dryers which are extensively used in Asian countries. Comparing these two experimental data with two simulated drying curves respectively, it revealed they are quite consist with each other under the same drying conditions. Drying air temperature, drying air humidity, drying period duration and tempering period duration significantly influenced the drying rate. Under the same drying condition, the tempering period duration effect was insignificant to the drying rate in drying zone as the drying air humidity or temperature increased. And, a higher initial moisture content obtained higher time and energy efficiency for the re-circulating rice dryers.  相似文献

According to the principle of sustainability, modern industry should preserve nonrenewable energy sources and develop more efficient processes, especially in terms of energy consumption. The depletion of fossil energy reserves, the environmental impact of greenhouse gases, and the possible threats of environmental taxes are the main reasons to develop new processes in general, and new drying processes in particular, for the existing industries. Using superheated steam as a drying medium instead of hot air can improve the energy efficiency by reusing the energy from exhausted steam and prevent gas emission into the atmosphere by condensation. The present review is focused on both lab-scale pilots—including impingement jet, fluid bed, kiln, fixed bed, and flash drying—described in the literature and existing industrial facilities, with a specific analysis focused on energy efficiency. The usefulness of superheated steam drying pilots for experimental research and for the design of industrial dryers is analyzed. The impact on quality specifications of the dried product for different operating conditions is also presented. Documentation on industrial superheated steam dryers is very rare. Nevertheless, this work presents and analyses the key data available for superheated steam drying of beet, alfalfa, industrial pulp, and paint sludge. Energy recovery and process integration, with a focus on specific technological challenges for industrial dryer implementation, are also presented. This document will result in a discussion of some new ideas for possible R&D in superheated steam drying.  相似文献

A comparative study of drying thin layers of sugar beet fiber with hot air or with superheated steam in a specially designed pilot dryer is reported. Our present interests are focused on drying rate and on the quality of the dried product. Steam superheated at 130-150°C yields 90 % of dry matter (DM), however steam condensation on the cold product at the beginning of the process may penalize the drying time. The color of the fiber is not modified until reaching 80 % DM. Drying with air heated at temperatures lying in the 40 to 105°C range does not alter the white color up to 90 % DM. The water retention capacity of the original fiber, 14 g water/g DM remains unchanged whatever drying agent is used. The scaling up of the primary hot air drying set up to a ten times larger experimental dryer introduce no modification of drying time, water retention capacity or fiber color. Thick layer drying experiments permit to define parameters of a belt dryer for an industrial fiber processing plant.  相似文献

Steam dryers are in widespread use for sewage sludge treatment. The effectiveness of the steam dryer could be improved by increasing the drying rate, which is influenced by the movement of the sludge in the dryer. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the movement of sludge and water evaporation in the dryer. In this study, tracers were used to elucidate the behavior of sludge in the dryer. The experiment confirmed that sludge did not simply flow in one direction; instead, part of the sludge flowed in the reverse direction (back-mixing). A tanks-in-series model analysis was performed to analyze the back-mixing phenomenon. This analysis provided insight into the behavior of sludge in the dryer, and the drying rate of each segment was determined.  相似文献

Fluidized bed dryers are often used to extract water from granular materials. When the drying process is mainly limited by the resistance against water transport inside the particle the drying behaviour is said to be diffusion-limited. In the literature there are several models that predict this drying process with very diverging results. In this study a model is set up to arrive at a better prediction for this drying process. The heat and mass transfer in the granular material and the drying air is described. The resulting equations are solved numerically. The model must be extended to incorporate the heat capacity of the dryer.  相似文献

This work studies the compatibility and suitability of a combined inversion temperature and pinch analysis with the process selection for air and superheated steam spray drying of milk solids. The inversion temperature is a good starting point for an energy analysis because it is a simplified rate-based approach to comparing the steam and air drying systems. pinch analysis enables process integration, at least on a heat recovery and heat exchanger network level.

The resulting inversion temperature for the studied system was estimated as 182°C for the dryer inlet temperature. However, mass and energy balances showed that a minimum inlet temperature for spray drying of 184°C was required for the superheated steam dryer in order to ensure that the outlet solids temperature above the dew point temperature.

The inversion temperature is still very relevant in the early stages of a design process because it allows a quick assessment of which drying medium should result in a smaller dryer. It was evident that the steam system is better from an energy perspective because of the recoverable latent heat of the water vapor carried out of the dryer with the recycled steam. The steam system has between 82 and 92% of thermal energy recovery potential as condensable steam, compared with 13–30% energy recovery of the air system. However, other important design and operational factors are not discussed here in detail.

Combining the inversion temperature and pinch analysis suggests that superheated steam drying both gives better energy recovery and is likely to give smaller dryers for all operational conditions.  相似文献

The superheated steam drying at reduced pressure is performed, and the effects of operational conditions such as drying pressure and temperature on the drying characteristics are examined. In order to obtain the basic guideline for the design of the superheated steam dryer at reduced pressure, the heat flux to sample was calculated and the optimal conditions were estimated.

After the sample temperature reached at the boiling point, the temperature was maintained at the boiling point and the drying rate became almost constant. Once the sample was dried out, the temperature suddenly increased up to the drying gas temperature. From the calculation of combined heat flux, the followings were found. The contribution of radiative heat transfer to the combined heat flux became larger as the drying pressure was lower. The combined heat flux had a maximum value against the drying pressure. The optimum drying pressure, which gave the maximum heat flux, became lower as the drying gas temperature decreased. It was found that reduction in the drying pressure is effective for the enhancement in drying performance.  相似文献

A modified quasi-stationary method has been proposed to describe drying kinetics of particulate materials dried in convective dryers with active hydrodynamic regimes. Both our own results and literature data were used. These include sliced celery, cranberry, diced carrot, wheat and polystyrene granules dried in four types of dryers: pulsed fluid bed dryer, fluid bed dryer with a mixer, spouted bed dryer with a draft tube, and vortex dryer. The method was validated by comparing experimental data with results of modeling in terms of a reduced moisture content and material temperature. A new form of the generalized drying curve has been proposed with the reduced time and the index of hydrodynamic intensity as parameters. The equations developed can be used to calculate the total drying time and determine the temporal variation of the moisture content and material temperature.  相似文献

This article presents a review of the seed air-drying process, including mathematical models based on differential equations derived from mass and energy balances for seeds and air in fixed and moving bed dryers. Incorporation of agitation to spouted and fluidized bed dryer result in significant increases in the drying capacity (Qs), although product retention persist, which is reduced by increasing the air flow. The physical phenomena occurring in these dryers with several liquid substrates was analyzed and the residence time distributions (RTD) were obtained by the use of dye tracers. The residence time (τ) was found to be a function of the rate of agitation (n) and reaches a minimum at n = nopt, which was characteristic for each type of substrate, and where maxima also appeared for the drying capacity (Qs = Qs max) and the heat transfer coefficient (Nup = Nup max). The RTD can be modeled by series of consecutive dryers and a modified Vanderschuren and Delvosalle model can be employed to calculated moisture of the dry product.  相似文献
