The memory subsystem, the external bus, chip and board testing, and design-verification methods for the 68040, a third-generation, full-32-bit microprocessor in the Motorola 68000 family, are discussed. The internal caches and memory management are examined at length. The external bus protocol, arbitration, snooping, and timing specifications are addressed. The MOVE16 instruction, which moves a cache line from one address (which may reside in the data cache) to another address outside the cache is described. User testing, based on dedicated test logic that is fully compliant with the IEEE 1149.1 standard, and factory testing, for which the processor employs structured design techniques for random logic and special test modes for embedded arrays, are examined. The use of top-down design and a hierarchical method of design verification is discussed     

Ergonomics testing of consumer products 1. General considerations

This is the first of two articles describing how to test consumer products, with special reference to the ergonomics techniques employed. The procedures and methods described are appropriate for the comparative testing of competing brands of a given consumer product. This article covers essential preliminaries to the ergonomics testing programme. It discusses: brands to be tested, aspects of product use for detailed investigation, desirable product characteristics, general principles in brand comparison tests, and the place of physical tests in the brand evaluation programme.

The major components of the MAP 2.1 conformance test system are described. Protocol conformance testing and program testing are compared. The scope and process of dynamic conformance testing is reviewed. The architecture of the tests system is presented, first in terms of the developing ISO (International Organization for Standardization) framework, and then in terms of run-time components. Several specific tools which comprise the test system are described. These tools include test engines, a high-level control tool, monitoring and analysis tools, and document handling tools. Hybrid component mode synthesis based on test derived data

A method of component mode synthesis in which a majority of the dynamic characteristics of individual components are determined by modal testing is described. For the purpose of testing, the component can be supported on a suitable number of rigid supports. Alternatively, the test can be carried out in a free–free configuration, in which very flexible cables are used to hold the component. In either case, a number of practical difficulties arise. A new approach to modal testing in which the fixed–fixed modes of the component are obtained from a test configuration in which the component is held by supports of arbitrary characteristics is described. A complete theoretical formulation is developed. Computer simulation studies are carried out to determine the sensitivity of the calculated mode shapes and frequencies of the assembled structure to the various measurement errors in modal testing. Some results from these studies are presented.
