Radiation‐crosslinked 2‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate/citric acid (HEMA/CAc), 2‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate/tartaric acid (HEMA/TA), and 2‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate/succinic acid (HEMA/Sc) copolymers were prepared by using 60Co γ‐rays. The gel fraction yield and the swelling behavior of the prepared hydrogels were studied. It was shown that increasing irradiation doses was accompanied by an increase in yield of gel fraction and a decrease in swelling degree. The parameters of equilibrium swelling, maximum swelling, initial swelling rate, swelling exponent, and diffusion coefficient of the hydrogels were determined by studying the swelling behavior of the hydrogels prepared. It was seen that the equilibrium swelling degree increases as the content of acid increases, as a result of introducing more hydrophilic groups. When the hydrophilic polymer (acids) varies in the content range of 40–80 mg, swelling exponents (n) decreases, thereby indicating a shift in the water‐transport mechanism from the anomalous (non‐Fickian)‐type to the Fickian‐type. Characterization and some selected properties of the prepared hydrogels were studied, and accordingly the possibility of its practical use in the treatment of industrial wastes such as dyes and heavy metals (Fe, Ni, Co, and Cu) were also studied. The effect of treatment time, pH of feed solution, initial feed concentration, and temperature on the dye and heavy metals uptake was determined. The uptake order for a given metal was HEMA/TA hydrogel > HEMA/CAc > HEMA/Sc hydrogel. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Novel pH‐sensitive chitosan‐poly(acrylamide‐co‐itaconic acid) hydrogels were prepared by free radical copolymerization of acrylamide and itaconic acid (IA) in chitosan solution. The hydrogels were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and the swelling ratios of the hydrogels in water (pH 6.8) and pH 1.2. The influence of composition on the thermal properties of the hydrogels was assessed. The glass transition temperatures of the samples increased with IA content, ranging from 110 to 136 °C. Swelling of the hydrogels was found to obey second‐order kinetics with respect to the remnant swelling, indicating that diffusion is controlled by the relaxation of chains. The equilibrium swelling degree was strongly dependent on pH and composition. At both pH values the highest water uptake was obtained for the IA‐free sample M1. From the equilibrium swelling results the average molar mass between crosslinks, Mc, and the crosslink density of the chitosan‐poly(acrylamide‐co‐itaconic acid) samples were calculated. The results evidenced the reinforcing effect of IA on the hydrogel structure. It is concluded that these highly swellable pH‐sensitive hydrogels can be useful for applications in biomedicine and pharmacy. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A novel hydrogel poly(acrylamide‐co‐poly‐N‐methylacrylamide) grafted katira gum (KG) was synthesized via free radical copolymerization using a mixture of acrylamide and N‐methylacrylamide in presence of N,N′‐methylene‐bis‐acrylamide as a crosslinking agent. A series of hydrogels (KG‐1 to KG‐6) were prepared by varying amount of acrylamide and N‐methylacryamide. Poly‐acrylamide‐g‐katira gum (PAM‐g‐KG) and poly‐N‐methylacrylamide‐g‐katira gum (PNMA‐g‐KG) hydrogels were also prepared using same crosslinking agent. Swelling characteristics of all the prepared hydrogels in water were evaluated and the hydrogel with best swelling property (KG‐6) was identified. The hydrogel KG‐6 was characterized by FTIR, X‐ray diffractometer, and scanning electron microscopy and was used for the adsorption of textile dyes namely methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), and congo red (CR) from single and ternary solutions. Adsorption dynamics, kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamics of all the prepared hydrogels were studied in the ternary dye solutions. The sorption kinetics data were fitted well to pseudo‐second order and the equilibrium adsorption data were found to follow Freundlich isotherm model. The thermodynamics studies showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. The preferential dye adsorption by the hydrogel was followed in the order MB > MG > CR. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 45958.  相似文献

A pH‐sensitive composite hydrogel based on poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid)/graphite was prepared by solution polymerization process in presence of redox initiator potassium persulfate/N,N,N′,N′‐tetramethylethylenediamine and cross‐linker (ethylene glycol dimethylacrylate). The structures of the hydrogels were confirmed using Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study. Tensile strengths of the hydrogels were determined by using a universal tensile machine, whereas the electrical conductivities of the hydrogels were evaluated using Four‐probe method. The influence of cross‐linker, graphite content, and temperature on the conductivity of the hydrogel was also investigated. The bending behavior of the conducting hydrogels was investigated by exposing the hydrogels under electric field in aqueous medium. By studying the swelling ratio of the polymer synthesized under different conditions, optimization conditions were found for a polymer with the highest swelling ratio. Also, the hemolytic potentiality test revealed that prepared hydrogels are biocompatible in nature. POLYM. COMPOS., 35:27–36, 2014. © 2013 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

A series of crosslinked copolymers with cationic nature have been prepared based on acrylamide (AAm) and [3‐(methacryloylamino)propyl]trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC) using N,N′ methylene‐bis‐acrylamide (MBA) as crosslinking agent. Taguchi's method has been employed for the purpose of formulation design and optimization as well as investigating the effects of various compositional parameters, such as total monomer concentration, cationic monomer and crosslinking agent concentration. The swelling behaviour of the synthesized gels in electrolyte solutions composed of ions with different valency has been studied and compared with an anionic‐based superabsorbent. The swelling capacity and absorbency were found to be enhanced with increase of the MAPTAC moieties of the copolymer chains, and therefore increase of their cationic character. All the cationic hydrogels prepared had greater swelling capacity, with less change in their swelling behaviour, when immersed into aqueous solutions containing multivalent cations. The anionic‐based hydrogels collapsed in similar ionic solutions with moderate‐to‐high ionic strength and did not show any tendency to re‐swell. The complex modulus (G*) of the crosslinked copolymers in the equilibrium swollen state was measured by rheomechanical spectroscopy and was correlated with the chemical composition of the network. Thermogravimetric analysis of the dry cationic superabsorbent showed more bound water but similar thermal behaviour to crosslinked polyacrylamide Copyright © 2003 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Hydrogels, composed of poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) and crosslinked polyacrylamide, were synthesized and the release of vitamin B12 from these hydrogels was studied as a function of the degree of crosslinking and pH of the external swelling media. The three drug‐loaded hydrogel samples synthesized with different crosslinking ratios of 0.3, 0.7, and 1.2 (in mol %) follow different drug‐release mechanisms, that is, chain relaxation with zero‐order, non‐Fickian and Fickian, or diffusion‐controlled mechanisms. To establish a correlation between their swelling behavior and drug‐release mechanism, the former was studied by the weight‐gain method and, at the same time, the concentration of the drug released was studied colorimetrically. Various swelling parameters such as the swelling exponent n, gel‐characteristic constant k, penetration velocity v, and diffusion coefficient D were evaluated to reflect the quantitative aspect of the swelling behavior of these hydrogels. Finally, the drug‐release behavior of the hydrogels was explained by proposing the swelling‐dependent mechanism. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 76: 1706–1714, 2000  相似文献

An “off‐the‐shelf” hydrogel with high‐efficiency shape memory property is designed on the basis of the dynamic borax‐diol chemistry. The system is facilely prepared from only several unmodified commercially available components: acrylamide (AAm), bis‐acrylamide (Bis), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and borax. The chemically crosslinked poly(acrylamide) network works to fix the permanent shapes of the hydrogel, while the dynamic PVA–borax boronate ester bonds serve as the reversible crosslinks to memorize the deformed temporary shapes. Retreatment of the hydrogel in acid/glucose solutions dissipates the PVA–borax ester bonds to recover its permanent shape. Because of the highly invertible nature of borax‐diol chemistry, the developed hydrogel system is characterized by high shape memory/recovery ratios, continuously adjusted shape memory/recovery rates, thus having a wealth of potential applications.  相似文献

Poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAAm)‐graft‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) hydrogels crosslinked by poly(?‐caprolactone) diacrylate were prepared, and their microstructures were investigated. The swelling/deswelling kinetics and compression strength were measured. The relationship between the structure and properties of hydrogel are discussed. It was found that the PEO comb‐type grafted structure reduced the thermosensitivity and increased the compression strength. The addition of poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) accelerated the deswelling rate of the hydrogels. Meanwhile, the entanglement of PCL chains restrained the further swelling of the network of gels. The PCL crosslinking agent and PEO comb‐type grafted structure made the behavior of the hydrogels deviate from the rubber elasticity equations. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Hydrogels consisting of sodium alginate and N‐isopropylacrylamide covalently crosslinked with N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide were prepared. The mixed‐interpenetrated networks obtained were characterized using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopy, swelling measurements and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The thermo‐ and pH‐responsive properties of these hydrogels were evidenced by their swelling behaviour, which depended also on the amount of crosslinking agent and hydrogel composition. Two different hydrogels, prepared from N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone/acrylic acid (NVP/AAc) and N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone/acrylamide (NVP/AAm), were studied for the separation and extraction of some heavy‐metal ions from wastewater. The hydrogels were prepared by the γ‐radiation‐induced copolymerization of the aforementioned binary monomer mixtures. Further modification was carried out for the NVP/AAc copolymer through an alkaline treatment to improve the swelling behavior by the conversion of the carboxylic acid groups into its sodium salts. The thermal stability and swelling properties were also investigated as functions of the N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone content. The characterization and some selected properties of the prepared hydrogels were studied, and the possibility of their practical use in wastewater treatment for heavy metals such as Cu, Ni, Co, and Cr was investigated. The maximum uptake for a given metal was higher for a treated NVP/AAc hydrogel than for an untreated NVP/AAc hydrogel and was higher for an untreated NVP/AAc hydrogel than for an NVP/AAm hydrogel. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Starch/(Ethylene glycol‐co‐Methacrylic acid) [Starch/(EG‐co‐MAA)] hydrogels were designed for controlled delivery of pesticides, such as Fluometuron (FH); Thiophanate Methyl (TF) and Trifluralin (TI) which are use in the agricultural field. The delivery device was prepared by using γ‐irradiation and was characterized by FTIR, DSC, and SEM. The swelling behavior of hydrogels as a function of copolymer composition and irradiation dose was detected. This article discusses the swelling kinetics of polymer matrix and release dynamics of Trifluralin from hydrogels for the evaluation of the diffusion mechanism and diffusion coefficients. The values of the diffusion exponent ‘n’ for both the swelling of hydrogels and the release of Trifluralin from the hydrogels have been observed between 0.56 and 0.86 when the MAA content in the polymers was varied from 20 to 80 wt %, respectively. It is inferred from the values of the ‘n’ that non‐Fickian diffusion mechanism has occurred for different EG/MAA compositions. The release rate from matrices prepared under different conditions was studied to determine which factors have the most affect and control over the hydrogel matrix release property. The preparation conditions such as EG/MAA hydrogel composition, pesticide concentration, type of pesticide and irradiation dose greatly affect the pesticide release rate, which also influenced by the pH and temperature of the matrix‐surrounding medium. The pesticide release rate decreased as the irradiation dose and pH increased, but it increased as the MAA content, pesticide concentration and temperature increased. The release rate of Trifluralin is the highest one, whereas the Fluometuron is the lowest. The properties of the prepared hydrogels may make them acceptable for practical use as bioactive controlled release matrices. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogels based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylamide‐co‐sodium methacrylate) poly(AAm‐co‐SMA) were prepared by the semi IPN method. These IPN hydrogels were prepared by polymerizing aqueous solution of acrylamide and sodium methacrylate, using ammonium persulphate/N,N,N1,N1‐tetramethylethylenediamine (APS/TMEDA) initiating system and N,N1‐methylene‐bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker in the presence of a host polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol). The influence of reaction conditions, such as the concentration of PVA, sodium methacrylate, crosslinker, initiator, and reaction temperature, on the swelling behavior of these IPNs was investigated in detail. The results showed that the IPN hydrogels exhibited different swelling behavior as the reaction conditions varied. To verify the structural difference in the IPN hydrogels, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to identify the morphological changes in the IPN as the concentration of crosslinker varied. In addition to MBA, two other crosslinkers were also employed in the preparation of IPNs to illustrate the difference in their swelling phenomena. The swelling kinetics, equilibrium water content, and water transport mechanism of all the IPN hydrogels were investigated. IPN hydrogels being ionic in nature, the swelling behavior was significantly affected by environmental conditions, such as temperature, ionic strength, and pH of the swelling medium. Further, their swelling behavior was also examined in different physiological bio‐fluids. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 302–314, 2005  相似文献

Thermosensitive hydrogels were prepared by free radical polymerization in aqueous solution from N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) monomer and N,N‐methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBAAm) crosslinker. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels in deionized water was investigated as a function of temperature and MBAAm content. The results indicated that the swelling behavior and temperature sensitivity of the hydrogels were affected by the amount of MBAAm content. The average molecular mass between crosslinks and polymer–solvent interaction parameter (χ) of the hydrogels were determined from equilibrium swelling values. The swelling variations were explained according to swelling theory based on the hydrogel chemical structure. The swelling equilibrium of the hydrogels was also investigated as a function of temperature in aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). In deionized water, the hydrogels showed a discontinuous volume phase transition at 32°C. In SDS and DTAB solutions, the equilibrium swelling ratio and the volume phase transition temperature (lower critical solution temperature) of the hydrogels increased, which is ascribed to the conversion of nonionic PNIPA hydrogel into polyelectrolyte hydrogels because of binding of surfactant molecules through the hydrophobic interaction. Additionally, the amount of free SDS and DTAB ions was measured at different temperatures by a conductometric method; it was found that the electric conductivity of the PNIPA–surfactant systems depended strongly on both the type and concentration of surfactant solutions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Acrylamide/itaconic acid hydrogels in the form of rods are prepared by γ‐irradiation of ternary mixtures of acrylamide/itaconic acid/water with 2.00–5.71 kGy γ‐rays. Spectroscopic and thermal characterization of the copolymers were examined. Dynamic and equilibrium swelling behavior of superabsorbent acrylamide/itaconic acid hydrogels was investigated in water. The equilibrium swelling degree, the swelling rate coefficient, the diffusion constant, the diffusion exponent, the diffusion coefficient, and the intrinsic diffusion coefficient of acrylamide/itaconic acid hydrogels were calculated. The superabsorbent hydrogels have shown mass swelling capabilities in the range 650–700% (for polyacrylamide hydrogels) and 900–2100% (for acrylamide‐itaconic acid hydrogels). Diffusion type of the hydrogels is non‐Fickian diffusion. The equilibrium swelling studies were used to determine important parameters of the crosslinked structure of the hydrogels, including the average molar mass between crosslinks and crosslink density.  相似文献

Environmentally sensitive hydrogels responsive to various stimuli such as temperature, pH, ionic strength of the medium and the solvent were prepared by using N‐isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM), acrylamide (AAm) and monomers that have various number of carboxylic acid (XA) functionality using N,N′‐methylene bisacrylamide (Bis) as crosslinker. Hydrogels were prepared via free radical polymerization reaction in aqueous solution. P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm) and p(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/XA hydrogels that contain monoprotic crotonic acid (CA) exhibit a lover critical solution temperature (LCST) at 28°C, whereas p(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/IA (IA:itaconic acid), and P(NIPAAm‐co‐AAm)/ACA (ACA:acotonic acid) hydrogels exhibit a lover critical solution temperature at 30.7°C and 34.4°C, respectively. Spectroscopic and thermal analyses were performed for the structural and thermal characterizations of the prepared hydrogel. The swelling experiments as equilibrium swelling percentages by gravimetrically were carried out in different solvents, at different solutions temperature, pH, and ionic strengths to determine their effects on swelling characteristic of hydrogels. Lately, copper‐assisted azide–alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) has become a very interesting tool for synthesizing biocompatible polymer‐based materials such as hydrogels or microgels, which can be used as biomaterials for tissue engineering and drug delivery. Novel poly(2‐hydroxyethyl aspartamide)s (PHEAs) functionalized with pendent acetylene or azide groups were prepared from polysuccinimide, which is the thermal polycondensation product of aspartic acid, through successful ring‐opening reactions using propargylamine, 1‐azido‐2‐aminoethane and ethanolamine. The composition of the prepared copolymers was analyzed using 1H NMR spectroscopy. Clickable PHEA derivatives were crosslinked by mixing together in water with a catalyst system of Cu(I) and N, N, N′, N′, N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine, a type of Huisgen's 1,3‐dipolar azide‐alkyne cycloaddition. The reaction of the polymers resulted in a chemoselective coupling between alkynyl and azido functional groups with multiple formation of triazole crosslinks to give hydrogels. The triazole linkages in the hydrogels are highly stable and may also play a role in swelling behavior. PHEA‐based hydrogels were also obtained by the crosslinking of azide‐ or alkyne‐modified PHEA with a small‐molecule crosslinker. The hydrogels prepared using these two methods were characterized by their degree of swelling and the morphology of the hydrogels was confirmed using scanning electron microscopy. The approach we describe here presents a promising alternative to common chemical hydrogel preparation techniques, and these hydrogels seem to possess structures having potential for a variety of industrial and biomedical applications. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Hydrogels usually have a smaller mechanical strength and toughness than generic polymeric materials. Therefore, many studies report improvements for mechanical properties of hydrogels by preparing double‐network hydrogels, nanocomposite hydrogels, and nanostructured hydrogels. In this study, interpenetrating‐type dually‐crosslinked hydrogels were prepared via free radical crosslinking polymerization of acrylamide monomers in the presence of poly(aspartic acid) and subsequent immersion in a metal ion containing aqueous solution to induce extra physical crosslinking through ionic or coordination bonding. Using this approach, the mechanical properties of inherently weak and brittle homopolymer gels could be improved via interpenetrating the double network formed by both covalent bonding and metal coordination‐assisted reversible physical crosslinks. The preparation, swelling behavior, morphology, and mechanical properties of these hydrogels are presented. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 45925.  相似文献

Semi‐interpenetrating network hydrogel films were prepared using hemicellulose and chemically crosslinked chitosan. Hemicellulose was extracted from aspen by using a novel alkaline treatment and characterized by HPSEC, and consisted of a mixture of high and low molecular weight polymeric fractions. HPLC analysis of the acid hydrolysate of the hemicellulose showed that its major constituent sugar was xylose. X‐ray analysis showed that the relative crystallinity of hydrogels increased with increasing hemicellulose content up to 31.3%. Strong intermolecular interactions between chitosan and hemicellulose were evidenced by FT‐IR analysis. Quantitative analysis of free amino groups showed that hemicellulose could interrupt the chemical crosslinking of chitosan macromolecules. Mechanical testing and swelling experiments were used to define the effective network crosslink density and average molecular weight between crosslinks. Swelling ratios increased with increasing hemicellulose content and mainly consisted of H‐bonded bound water. Results revealed that by altering the hydrogel preparation steps and hemicellulose content, crosslink density and swelling behavior of semi‐IPN hydrogels could be controlled without deteriorating their mechanical properties. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogels were prepared from 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate and acrylamidoglycolic acid using N,N’-methylene bis acrylamide as a crosslinking agent in presence of potassium persulfate initiator. The average molecular mass between crosslinks (M c) and polymer-solvent interaction parameter of hydrogels were determined from equilibrium swelling values. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of hydrogels shows the confirmation of the formation of co-polymeric hydrogels. Scanning electron microscopy of hydrogels shows the porous network structure. Differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction were performed to understand the crystalline nature of hydrogel and drug after encapsulation in to hydrogels. In vitro release studies indicated the release of 5-Fluorouracil for more than 12 h.  相似文献

Composite hydrogels of poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylate) with rice husk ash (RHA) were synthesized and studies of the swelling variables were accomplished comparatively with commercial polyacrylamide gel and PAMACRYL, a poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylate) hydrogel without RHA. FT‐IR and WAXS were the techniques employed for characterizing a series of hydrogel obtained by varying the percentage of RHA (1, 2, 5, 10, and 20 wt %) and the amount of crosslinking agent (0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 mol %) relative to sum of AAm and AAc. Superabsorbent hydrogel with Weq > 800 g H2O/g gel was obtained with percentage of 10 wt % of RHA and 0.1 of crosslinking agent mol %. The hydrogel showed to be sensitive to the pH variation and to the presence of salts. The hydrogels, even though submitted through cycles of drying and swelling, preserved their superabsorbent characteristics and demonstrated better water absorbance properties when compared with commercial polyacrylamide gel. The composite hydrogels of poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylate) with RHA presented good characteristics to be applied as soil conditioner for using in agriculture. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
