To determine the possibility of using sugarcane bagasse (SCB) waste as reinforcing filler in the thermoplastic polymer matrix, SCB‐reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared. The PP and SCB composites were prepared by the extrusion of PP resin with 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt % of SCB filler in a corotating twin screw extruder. The extruded strands were cut into pellets and injection molded to make test specimens. These specimens were tested for physicomechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, Izod, and Charpy impact strengths, density, water absorption, and thermal characteristics, namely, heat deflection temperature (HDT), melt flow index, and thermogravimetric analysis. It was found that the flexural strength increased from 23.66 to 26.84 MPa, Izod impact strength increased from 10.499 to 13.23 Kg cm/cm, Charpy impact strength increased from 10.096 to 13.98 Kg cm/cm, and HDT increased from 45.5 to 66.5°C, with increase in filler loading from 5 to 20% in the PP matrix. However, the tensile strength and elongation decreased from 32.22 to 27.21 MPa and 164.4 to 11.20% respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 3827–3832, 2007  相似文献

To determine the possibility of using starch as biodegradable filler in the thermoplastic polymer matrix, starch‐filled polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by extrusion of PP resin with 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt % of potato starch in corotating twin‐screw extruder. The extruded strands were cut into pellets and injection molded to make test specimens. These specimens were tested for physicomechanical properties such as tensile and flexural properties, Izod impact strength, density, and water absorption. These PP composites were further characterized by melt flow index (MFI), vicat softening point (VSP), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. It was found that, with increase in starch content, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of the PP composites increased along with the increase in moisture, water absorption, and density, while retaining the VSP; but, tensile strength and elongation, impact strength, hardness, and MFI of the PP composites also decreased. DSC analysis of the PP composite revealed the reduction in melting temperature, heat of fusion, and percentage of crystallization of PP with increase in starch content. Similarly, TGA traces display enhanced thermal degradability for PP as starch content increases. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

In this study, 5, 10, and 15 vol.% of bronze (Cu-10 wt.% Sn) powder on the physical and mechanical properties of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) were investigated experimentally. After preparing metal-polymer matrix composites (PMC) with a twin screw extruder and injection molding, fracture surface, the modulus of elasticity, yield and tensile strength, percentage elongation, Izod impact strength, hardness (Shore D), melt flow index (MFI), heat deflection temperature (HDT), Vicat softening point, and glass transition temperature (T g) of each sample were determined. As compared to the unfilled ABS. It was found that by increasing the vol.% of bronze in ABS, yield and tensile strength, % elongation, Izod impact strength, MFI values decreased, while the modulus of elasticity, Shore D hardness, Vicat softening point, and HDT values increased.  相似文献

High‐density polyethylene (HDPE)/turmeric spent (TS) composites were prepared by the extrusion of an HDPE resin with 5, 10, 15, or 20 wt % TS. HDPE granules and TS master‐batch flakes were compounded on a corotating and intermeshing twin‐screw extruder. The extrudate strands were cut into pellets and injection‐molded to make test specimens. These specimens were tested for physicomechanical properties such as the tensile, flexural, and impact strengths, surface hardness, abrasion resistance, density, and water absorption and thermal characteristics such as the heat distortion temperature (HDT) and melt flow index (MFI). Test results revealed that the incorporation of TS affected the tensile, flexural, and Izod impact strengths of the HDPE/TS composites to some extent, whereas the tensile modulus increased from 606.9 to 752.0 N/mm2 and the HDT increased from 61 to 65°C. Furthermore, the addition of TS yielded only marginal variations in the surface hardness, abrasion resistance, density, water absorption, and MFI values of the composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The instrumented Izod and Charpy tests were performed on the sawdust–polypropylene (PP) composites to study the nature of impact resistance in the thermoplastic wood composites. The notched Izod strength was found to increase with filler content in composites containing the Maleic–anhydride–grafted PP (MAPP) additive. The Izod strength even exceeds that of the neat matrix resin at higher filler contents, indicating a methodology for applying the recycled PP and also for reinforcing the thermoplastics with wood powders. While the static tensile results show evidences for the reinforcing role of the wood filler, a fracture mechanics characterization through the Charpy impact tests effects of MAPP under the impact loading rates. The choice of MAPP as the additive was discussed accordingly for application of the sort of materials. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 81: 1420–1428, 2001  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The physical and mechanical properties of Polypropylene (PP) and Fe-PP polymer composites containing 5, 10, and 15 vol% Fe were investigated experimentally. After preparing PP and Fe–PP polymer composites with a twin screw extruder and injection molding, the following properties were determined: yield and tensile strength, the modulus of elasticity, % elongation, hardness (Shore D), Izod impact strength (notched), melt flow index (MFI), Vicat softening point, Heat deflection temperature (HDT), and melting temperature (Tm) of PP and metal-polymer composites. As compared to PP, It was found that by increasing the vol% of Fe in PP, notched Izod impact strength, yield and tensile strength, and % elongation decreased. On the other hand, the modulus of elasticity, hardness, MFI, vicat softening point, and HDT values increased with the amount of iron.  相似文献

Big blue stem grass fiber-reinforced high density polyethylene powder biocomposites were fabricated using two separate processing schemes: (1) by compounding biofiber with the thermoplastic powder in an extruder and subsequently injection molding the extrusion pellets and (2) by combining biofiber and the powder thermoplastic powder using a modified sheet molding compounding (SMC) line and subsequently compression molding the sheet material. The physical properties including storage modulus, heat deflection temperature (HDT), notched Izod impact strength, and morphology were evaluated with dynamic mechanical analysis, Izod impact strength measurement, and microscopy observation. It was found that compression-molded specimens achieved similar modulus values to injection molded specimens for grass-reinforced high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites. The stiffness of the compression-molded specimens is related to the consolidation state of the samples, which depends on compression molding conditions such as temperature, pressure, and mold type. Compression-molded specimens exhibited a higher HDT and notched Izod impact strength compared to injection-molded samples. Grass fiber-reinforced cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) biocomposites made with SMC processing had similar physical properties with grass fiber-reinforced HDPE composites, which indicates that natural fiber-reinforced CAB biocomposites have the potential to replace polyolefin-based composites for automotive applications. The mechanical properties of mesoporous silica (MCM‐41) filled poly(l ‐lactic acid) (PLA4032D) composites and PLA4032D/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) composites were investigated. It was found that the Young's modulus increased while tensile strength decreased with increasing the filler content; the V‐notched impact fracture strengths of both Izod and Charpy for the PLA4032D/PEG/MCM‐41 composites increased while they decreased slightly for the PLA4032D/MCM‐41 composites, the unnotched Charpy impact strength of both the two composites decreased with increasing the filler loading; the flexural modulus increased slightly while the flexural strength decreased slightly with increasing the filler content. The toughening mechanisms of the composites were discussed by means of observing the impact fracture surface with a scanning electronic microscope, and the synergistic effect between the PEG and MCM‐41 should be one of the major toughening mechanisms. In this study, the effect of Fe powder on the physical and mechanical properties of high density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated experimentally. HDPE and HDPE containing 5, 10, and 15 vol % Fe metal–polymer composites were prepared with a twin screw extruder and injection molding. After this, fracture surface, the modulus of elasticity, yield and tensile strength, % elongation, Izod impact strength (notched), hardness (Shore D), Vicat softening point, heat deflection temperature (HDT), melt flow index (MFI), and melting temperature (Tm) were determined, for each sample. When the physical and mechanical properties of the composites were compared with the results of unfilled HDPE, it was found that the yield and tensile strength, % elongation, and Izod impact strength of HDPE decreased with the vol % of Fe. As compared with the tensile strength and % elongation of unfilled HDPE, tensile strength and % elongation of 15 vol % Fe filled HDPE were lower, about 17.40% and 94.75% respectively. On the other hand, addition of Fe into HDPE increased the modulus of elasticity, hardness, Vicat softening, MFI, and HDT values, such that 15 vol % Fe increased the modulus of elasticity to about 48%. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four types of magnesium hydroxide with different particle and crystallite sizes and different degrees of agglomeration were added at amounts up to 60% by weight to polypropylene to obtain a series of composites. The burning characteristics, tensile yield strength, flexural modulus, notched Izod impact strength, and melt flow index of the resulting composites were measured. Magnesium hydroxide coated with sodium stearate was found to give an increased melt flow index and impact strength to the composites as compared to values obtained with uncoated magnesium hydroxide. Incorporation of not less than about 57% by weight of magnesium hydroxide made the composite nonflammable, but at the same time considerably reduced its impact, flexural, and tensile yield strengths. As the amount of magnesium hydroxide filler was increased, the tensile yield strength and flexural strength of the composite proportionally decreased while the flexural modulus increased. The impact strength reached a maximum value when the amount of incorporation was 30% by weight. The lower the degree of agglomeration of the magnesium hydroxide filler and the greater the crystallite size within the range to about 2μm, the better were the mechanical properties of the composite.  相似文献

This article reports on an experimental study of the physical and mechanical properties of Polystyrene (PS) and Fe-PS polymer composites containing 5, 10, and 15 vol.% of Fe powder. After mixing Fe powder and PS in a twin-screw extruder, an injection-molding machine was used to prepare unfilled PS and Fe-PS polymer composite samples. After that, the material properties were experimentally determined for each sample. The investigated material properties included the modulus of elasticity, yield and tensile strength, % elongation, Izod impact strength (notched), hardness (Shore D), melt flow index (MFI), heat deflection temperature (HDT), Vicat softening point, and glass transition temperature (T g ). The results indicated that, compared to the unfilled PS, an addition of Fe into PS decreases the yield and tensile strength, % elongation, and Izod impact strength. Furthermore, it was determined that the Fe particles increase the modulus of elasticity, hardness, MFI, Vicat softening point, and HDT values.  相似文献

Interfacial agents as compatibilizers have recently been introduced into polymer blends to improve microstructure and mechanical properties of thermoplastics. In this way, it is possible to prepare a mixture of polymeric materials that can have superior mechanical properties over a wide temperature range. In this study, an incompatible blend of Polycarbonate (PC) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Copolymer were made compatible by addition of 5, 10, and 20% Styrene–Isopren–Styrene Copolymer (SIS). The mixing operation was conducted using a twin‐screw extruder. The morphology and the compatibility of the mixtures were examined by SEM and DSC techniques. Furthermore, the elastic modulus, tensile and yield strengths, percentage elongation, hardness, melt flow index, Izod impact resistance, heat deflection temperature (HDT), Vicat softening point values of polymer alloys of various ratios were determined. It was found that addition of SIS to the structures decreased the tensile strength, yield strength, elastic modulus, and hardness, whereas it increased Izod impact strength and percentage elongation values. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural properties as well as impact behavior of nickel-powder–filled isotactic polypropylene composites were investigated in the composite composition range 0–3.5 volume % Ni. Tensile modulus, strength, and elongation-at-break decreased with increase in Ni content, which is attributed to the introduction of discontinuity in the structure. Analysis of tensile strength data indicated the introduction of stress concentration consequent upon addition of Ni into polypropylene. Izod impact strength at first increased up to a critical Ni content beyond which the value decreased inappreciably while flexural modulus and strength increased with filler concentration.  相似文献

To determine the possibility of using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) powder as reinforcing filler in the thermoplastic matrix, the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) as the matrix and PTFE powder as reinforcing filler were used to prepare a particulate reinforced composite, in order to determine testing data for electrical and mechanical properties of the composites according to the filler loading in respect to TPU polymer matrix. The TPU and PTFE powder composites were prepared by the milling TPU with 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt% of PTFE powder in a two roll mill and the milled material is compression moulded to make sheets. From the sheets, the test specimens were made and tested for electrical properties—dielectric strength, dielectric constant, surface, and volume resistivity; fire resistance—rate of burning; mechanical properties—tensile strength and elongation, impact strength, hardness; density and melt flow index. The incorporation of PTFE powder has significantly improved the electrical properties—dielectric strength, dielectric constant, surface and volume resistivity; and fire resistance—rate of burning of thermoplastic polyurethane. However, the tensile strength decreased from 24.91 to 14.71 MPa and tensile elongation increased from 620 to 772 percentage.  相似文献

Mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, and impact behavior of Al powder-filled polypropylene composites were studied in the composite composition range 0–10 vol% Al. Tensile strength, modulus, and breaking elongation decreased with increase in filler content due to the formation of weak structure. Analysis of tensile strength data demonstrated the introduction of stress concentration into the structure. Flexural strength and modulus increased with filler content due to increase in rigidity. Izod impact strength at first increased up to a critical Al concentration, beyond which the value decreased.  相似文献

Biodegradable plastics were produced from sweet potato pulp (SPP) and cationic starch (CS) or chitosan composite (CC) by compression molding and their mechanical properties were tested. A universal testing machine, Rockwell hardness tester, and Izod impact tester were used for testing the mechanical properties (flexural strength, Rockwell hardness, and Izod strength) of the plastics. A central composite second‐order design was used to study the effects of temperature, time, and moisture content on the flexural strength, Rockwell hardness, and Izod strength of SPP/CS and SPP/CC blended plastics. The flexural strength, Rockwell hardness, and Izod strength of SPP‐based plastics was 101.1–305.9 kg/cm2, R29.0–R96.7, and 0.6–3.0 kg cm cm?2, respectively. Regression analysis predicted the optimal mechanical properties (flexural strength, Rockwell hardness, and Izod strength) to be attained with a 150–160°C temperature, 15–20‐min reaction time, and 20–23% moisture content. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) is used to form a high density microcellular foam structure to reduce the polymer use and facilitate dispersion of Mg(OH)2 and Nanoclay fillers. A twin-screw extruder system was used to predistribute the inorganic filler from the PP polymer, resulting composite PP/filler pellets. This followed by the use of a single-screw extruder wherein supercritical carbon dioxide is introduced in the formulation. Finally the resulting foam PP/filler/CO2 pellets are injection molded into test samples. The structure and properties of the composites are characterized using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and density measurements. Furthermore, PP/Clay/Mg(OH)2 polymer composites are subjected to examinations to obtain their yield and tensile strengths, elasticity modulus, % elongation, Izod impact strength, hardness, Heat deflection temperature (HDT), Vicat softening point and Melt flow index (MFI).  相似文献

Mechanical properties, such as tensile and flexural properties, as well as impact behavior of silver-powder-filled isotactic polypropylene composites were investigated in the composite composition range of 0–5.6 vol% of Ag. Tensile modulus, strength, and elongation at break decreased with incorporation of silver and an increase in silver concentration. Analysis of tensile strength data indicated the introduction of stress concentration and discontinuity in the structure upon addition of Ag particles. Izod impact strength decreased sharply on addition of 0.43 vol % of Ag particles, beyond which the value decreased marginally. Both flexural modulus and strength increased with filler content due to an increase in rigidity. Surface treatment of filler marginally improved mechanical properties. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of blocked polyurethane(PU)/epoxy interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) were studied by means of their static and damping properties. The studies of static mechanical properties of IPNs are based on tensile properties, flexural properties, hardness, and impact method. Results show that the tensile strength, flexural strength, tensile modulus, flexural modulus, and hardness of IPNs decreased with increase in blocked PU content. The impact strength of IPNs increased with increase in blocked PU content. It shows that the tensile strength, flexural strength, tensile modulus, and flexural modulus of IPNs increased with filler (CaCO3) content to a maximum value at 5, 10, 20, and 25 phr, respectively, and then decreased. The higher the filler content, the greater the hardness of IPNs and the lower the notched Izod impact strength of IPNs. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of IPNs were shifted inwardly compared with those of blocked PU and epoxy, which indicated that the blocked PU/epoxy IPNs showed excellent compatibility. Meanwhile, the Tg was shifted to a higher temperature with increasing filler (CaCO3) content. The dynamic storage modulus (E′) of IPNs increased with increase in epoxy and filler content. The higher the blocked PU content, the greater the swelling ratio of IPNs and the lower the density of IPNs. The higher the filler (CaCO3) content, the greater the density of IPNs, and the lower the swelling ratio of IPNs. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 1826–1832, 2006  相似文献
