Ti-6Al-4V sheets, 3.2-mm in thickness, were butt welded using a continuous wave 4 kW Nd:YAG laser welding system. The effect of two main process parameters, laser power and welding speed, on the joint integrity was characterized in terms of the joint geometry, defects, microstructure, hardness, and tensile properties. In particular, a digital image correlation technique was used to determine the local tensile properties of the welds. It was determined that a wide range of heat inputs can be used to fully penetrate the Ti-6Al-4V butt joints during laser welding. At high laser power levels, however, significant defects such as underfill and porosity, can occur and cause marked degradation in the joint integrity and performance. At low welding speeds, however, significant porosity occurs due to its growth and the potential collapse of instable keyholes. Intermediate to relatively high levels of heat input allow maximization of the joint integrity and performance by limiting the underfill and porosity defects. In considering the effect of the two main defects on the joint integrity, the underfill defect was found to be more damaging to the mechanical performance of the weldment than the porosity. Specifically, it was determined that the maximum tolerable underfill depth for Ti-6Al-4V is approximately 6 pct of the workpiece thickness, which is slightly stricter than the value of 7 pct specified in AWS D17.1 for fusion welding in aerospace applications. Hence, employing optimized laser process parameters allows the underfill depth to be maintained within the tolerable limit (6 pct), which in turn prevents degradation in both the weld strength and ductility. To this end, the ability to maintain weld ductility in Ti-6Al-4V by means of applying a high energy density laser welding process presents a significant advantage over conventional arc welding for the assembly of aerospace components.  相似文献

Dominant microstructural factors governing the global tensile properties of a friction-stir-welded joint of 6063 aluminum were examined by estimating distribution of local tensile properties corresponding to local microstructure and hardness. Yield and ultimate tensile strengths of the as-welded weld were significantly lower than those of the base material. Postweld aging and postweld solution heat-treatment and aging (SHTA) restored the strengths of the weld to the levels of the base material. Elongation was found to increase with increasing strength. Hardness tests showed that the as-welded weld was soft around the weld center and that the aged weld and the SHTA weld had relatively homogeneous distributions of high hardness. Hardness profiles of the welds were explained by precipitate distributions and precipitation sequences during the postweld heat treatments. The strengths of the welds were related to each minimum hardness value. In a weld having a heterogeneous hardness profile, the fracture occurred in the region with minimum hardness. When a weld had a homogeneous hardness profile, its fracture site depended on both crystallographic-orientation distribution of the matrix grains and strain tensor of the imposed deformation, i.e., it fractured in the region with a minimum average Taylor factor.  相似文献

The aluminum alloy 6013 was friction-stir welded in the T4 and the T6 temper, and the microstructure and mechanical properties were studied after welding and after applying a postweld heat treatment (PWHT) to the T4 condition. Optical microscopy (OM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and texture measurements revealed that the elongated pancake microstructure of the base material (BM) was transformed into a dynamically recrystallized microstructure of considerably smaller grain size in the weld nugget. Strengthening precipitates, present before welding in the T6 state, were dissolved during welding in the nugget, while an overaged state with much larger precipitate size was established in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). Microhardness measurements and tensile tests showed that the HAZ is the weakest region of the weld. The welded sheet exhibited reduced strength and ductility as compared to the BM. A PWHT restored some of the strength to the as-welded condition.  相似文献

The microstructure of Ti-5Al-2.5Fe, which is expected to be used widely as an implant material not only for artificial hip joints but also for instrumentations of scoliosis surgery, was variously changed by heat treatments. The effect of the microstructure on mechanical properties, fracture toughness, and rotating-bending fatigue strength in the air and simulated body environment, that is, Ringer’s solution, was then investigated. Furthermore, the effect of the living body environment on mechanical properties and fracture toughness in Ti-5Al-2.5Fe were investigated on the specimens implanted into rabbit for about 11 months. The data of Ti-5Al-2.5Fe were compared with those of Ti-6Al-4V ELI, which has been used as an implant material mainly for artificial hip joints, and SUS 316L, which has been used as an implant material for many parts, including the instrumentation of scoliosis surgery. The equiaxedα structure, which is formed by annealing at a temperature belowβ transus, gives the best balance of strength and ductility in Ti-5Al-2.5Fe. The coarse Widmanstättenα structure, which is formed by solutionizing overβ transus followed by air cooling and aging, gives the greatest fracture toughness in Ti-5Al-2.5Fe. This trend is similar to that reported in Ti-6Al-4V ELI. The rotating-bending fatigue strength is the greatest in the equiaxedα structure, which is formed by solutionizing belowβ transus followed by air cooling and aging in Ti-5Al-2.5Fe. Ti-5Al-2.5Fe exhibits much greater rotating-bending fatigue strength compared with SUS 316L, and equivalent rotating-bending fatigue strength to that of Ti-6Al-4V ELI in both the air and simulated body environments. The rotating-bending fatigue strength of SUS 316L is degraded in the simulated body environment. The corrosion fatigue, therefore, occurs in SUS 316L in the simulated body environment. Fatigue strength of Ti-5Al-2.5Fe in the simulated body environment is degraded by lowering oxygen content in the simulated body environment because the formability of oxide on the specimen surface is considered to be lowered comparing with that in air. The mechanical property and fracture toughness of Ti-5Al-2.5Fe and Ti-6Al-4V ELI are not changed in the living body environment. The hard-surface corrosion layer is, however, formed on the surface of SUS 316L in the living body environment. The C1 peak is detected from the hard-surface corrosion layer by energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. These facts suggests a possibility for corrosion fatigue to occur in the living body environment when SUS 316L is used. The fibrous connective tissue and new bone formation are formed beside all metals. There is, however, no big difference between tissue morphology around each implant material.  相似文献

The linear friction welding behavior of Ti-6Al-4V was investigated using varying processing conditions of frequency (15 to 70 Hz), amplitude (1 to 3 mm), pressure (50 to 90 MPa), and axial shortening (1 to 2 mm). Examination of linear friction welded Ti-6Al-4V using microscopic techniques indicated that the process requires certain critical conditions at the interface and its adjacent region to be reached for producing joints without structural defects along the weld centerline, such as voids or oxide inclusions. Characterization of the weldments included analysis of the microstructural features of the weld and thermomechanically affected zones (TMAZs) in relation to the parent material. It was observed that in the weld region, exposure to supertransus temperatures (>995 °C) combined with hot-deformation working and rapid cooling after joining produced recrystallization of the beta grain structure that had a Widmanstätten alpha-beta transformation microstructure. In the TMAZ, the bimodal microstructure of the parent material was deformed and the presence of elongated alpha grains with broken beta-phase particles was established. Through examination of the mechanical properties, using microhardness and tensile testing, the integrity of the joints was determined in order to assess the impact of the various processing parameters and to define the optimum welding conditions.  相似文献

The precipitation sequence in friction stir weld of 6063 aluminum during postweld aging, associated with Vickers hardness profiles, has been examined by transmission electron microscopy. Friction stir welding produces a softened region in the weld, which is characterized by dissolution and growth of the precipitates. The precipitate-dissolved region contains a minimum hardness region in the aswelded condition. In the precipitate-dissolved region, postweld aging markedly increases the density of strengthening precipitates and leads to a large increase in hardness. On the other hand, aging forms few new precipitates in the precipitate-coarsened region, which shows a slight increase in hardness. The postweld aging at 443 K for 43.2 ks (12 hours) gives greater hardness in the overall weld than in the as-received base material and shifts the minimum hardness from the as-welded minimum hardness region to the precipitate-coarsened region. These hardness changes are consistent with the subsequent precipitation behavior during postweld aging. The postweld solution heat treatment (SHT) and aging achieve a high density of strengthening precipitates and bring a high hardness homogeneously in the overall weld.  相似文献

Linear friction welding allows solid-state joining of near-beta (β) titanium alloy Ti-5553 (Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr). In the as-welded condition, the weld zone (WZ) exhibits β grain refinement and marked softening as compared with Ti-5553 in the solution heat treated and aged condition. The softening of the weldment is attributed to the depletion of the strengthening alpha (α) phase in the WZ and the adjacent thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ). Specifically, in near-β titanium alloys, the strength of the material mainly depends on the shape, size, distribution, and fraction of the primary α and other decomposition products of the β phase. Hence, a combination of pre- and post-weld heat treatments were applied to determine the conditions that allow mitigating the α phase depletion in the WZ and TMAZ of the welds. The mechanical response of the welded samples to the heat treatments was determined by performing microhardness measurements and tensile testing at room temperature with an automated 3D deformation measurement system. It was found that though the joint efficiency in the as-welded condition was high (96 pct), strain localization and failure occurred in the TMAZ. The application of post-weld solution heat treatment with aging was effective in restoring α, increasing the joint efficiency (97 to 99 pct) and inducing strain localization and failure in the parent material region.  相似文献

The present study is concerned with the fabrication and microstructural analysis of boride/Ti-6Al-4V surface-alloyed materials using the irradiation of a high-energy electron beam. Mixtures of TiB2 or MoB powders and CaF2 flux were placed on a Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrate and subsequently irradiated using a high-energy electron beam. Specimens processed with a flux mixing ratio of 40 wt pct showed that the melted region of 1.1 to 1.5 mm in thickness was homogeneously formed without defects and contained a large amount of titanium borides (TiB). The formation of TiB in the melted region greatly improved the Vickers hardness, high-temperature Vickers hardness, and wear resistance to levels 2 or 3 three times higher than the those for the Ti alloy substrate. Also, the addition of MoB powders into the mixtures made possible the fabrication of surface-alloyed materials with various properties by controlling the kind, size, and volume fraction of TiB and the characteristics of the matrix. These findings suggested that surface alloying using high-energy electron-beam irradiation was economical and useful for the development of boride/Ti-6Al-4V surface-alloyed materials with improved properties.  相似文献

The correlation of microstructure with the hardness and wear resistance of (TiC,SiC)/Ti-6Al-4V surface composites fabricated by high-energy electron-beam irradiation was investigated in this study. The mixtures of TiC, SiC, or TiC + SiC powders and CaF2 flux were placed on a Ti-6Al-4V substrate, and then an electron beam was irradiated on these mixtures using an electron-beam accelerator. The surface composite layers of 1.2 to 2.1 mm in thickness were formed without defects and contained a large amount (up to 66 vol pct) of precipitates such as TiC and Ti5Si3 in the martensitic matrix. This microstructural modification, including the formation of hard precipitates and a hardened matrix in the surface composite layer, improved the hardness and wear resistance. Particularly in the surface composite fabricated with TiC + SiC powders, the wear resistance was greatly enhanced to a level 25 times higher than that of the Ti alloy substrate, because 66 vol pct of TiC and Ti5Si3 was precipitated homogeneously in the hardened martensitic matrix. These findings suggested that high-energy electron-beam irradiation was useful for the development of Ti-based surface composites with improved hardness and wear properties.  相似文献

Nimonic 263 has been developed for the improved ductility in welded assemblies and is a candidate material for gas turbine combustor and transition pieces along with its good weldability and mechanical properties at room and elevated temperatures. In this study, the tensile behavior of an as-welded Nimonic 263 specimen at room temperature and 1053 K (780 °C) was examined in conjunction with microstructural evolution during welding and postweld heat treatment (PWHT). With the welding and the PWHT, the yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and tensile elongation of Nimonic 263 varied in a complex manner. It was observed that the PWHT of resolutionization at 1423 K (1150 °C) for 2 hours gave the highest YS and UTS values, whereas the tensile elongation was the lowest, at both testing temperatures. With increasing resolutionization time, the YS and UTS tended to decrease along with the increase in tensile ductility. The tensile behaviors of as-welded Nimonic 263 specimens was affected by several factors, including grain size, residual stress, possible microsegregation of γ′ forming elements, a tendency for interdendritic or intergranular fracture and a morphological change in both M23C6 and MC type carbides, depending on the testing temperature and the PWHT. The complex changes in tensile properties of Nimonic 263 with welding and PWHT at room temperature and 1053 K (780 °C) were discussed based on the micrographic and fractographic observations.  相似文献

The hydrogenation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V, with the starting microstructures of coarse equiaxed α and coarse Widmanstätten α, respectively, was investigated under a hydrogen pressure of 0.1 MPa at temperatures between 843 and 1123 K. The hydrogen content was determined as a function of hydrogenation time, hydrogenation temperature, and hydrogen flow rate. The phases presented in the alloy of after hydrogenation were determined with X-ray and electron diffraction analysis in order to define the effect of Thermochemical Processing (TCP) on the microstructure of the alloy. Mechanical properties and fracture toughness of Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-5Al-2.5Fe subjected to the various TCP were then investigated. Hydrogenation of Ti-6Al-4V with the starting microstructure of coarse equiaxed α at 1023 K, just below hydrogen saturated β (denoted β″ (H)) transus temperature, produces a microstructure of a, orthohombic martensite (denoted α″ (H)) and β (H). Hydrogenation at 1123 K, above β (H) transus, results in a microstructure of α″ (H) and β (H). Microstructure refinement during TCP results mainly from decomposition of α″ (H) and ;β (H) into a fine mixture of α + β during dehydrogenation. An alternative TCP method is below β (H) transus hydrogenation (BTH), consisting of hydrogenation of the alloy below the hydrogenated β (H) transus temperature, air cooling to room temperature, and dehydrogenation at a lower temperature, which is found to improve mechanical properties significantly over a conventional TCP treatment. Compared with the untreated material, the BTH treatment increases the yield strength and increases the ultimate tensile strength significantly without decreasing the tensile elongation in the starting microstructure of coarse equiaxed α or with a little decrease in the tensile elongation in the starting microstructure of coarse Widmanstätten α, although the conventional TCP treatment results in a large decrease in elongation over the unprocessed material in Ti-6Al-4V. In Ti-5Al-2.5 Fe, both conventional TCP and BTH result in a increase in yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation; however, the BTH gives the best balance between strength and elongation. The TCP-treated Ti-6Al-4V shows smaller fracture toughness compared with the unprocessed material, while TCP-treated Ti-5Al-2.5Fe shows greater fracture toughness compared with the unprocessed material. The BTH treatment results in a improvement in fatigue strength in both Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-5Al-2.5Fe.  相似文献

Post-weld heat treatment is carried out on the laser beam welded γ-TiAl-based alloy Ti-48Al-1Cr-1.5Nb-1Mn-0.2Si-0.5B (at. pct). The macro/microstructure and mechanical properties of both as-welded and heat-treated specimens are investigated by radiography, SEM, and tensile tests. Moreover, high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction is performed to measure the residual stresses and evaluate the microstructure evolution. It is found that the residual stresses are distributed in a three-peak shape in the region of the weld zone and heat-affected zone of the as-welded specimen due to the microstructural transformation and heat softening. The residual stresses are largely relieved after the heat treatment. The heat-treated specimens have a near fully lamellar microstructure and show balanced mechanical properties of strength and ductility. The diffraction shows that the phase transformation from α 2 to γ takes place under tensile load at 1023 K (750 °C), and the grain size and lamellar spacing are refined in the weld zone. Finally, the fracture mechanisms are found to be controlled by the local stress concentration-induced strain misfit between α 2 and γ phases in the near γ grains and delamination and debonding in the lamellae. Boride ribbons of 5 μm in the near fully lamellar microstructure are found not to be detrimental to the tensile properties.  相似文献

Creep tests were conducted at 295 K on Ti-6 Al-4 V in the solution treated and aged (4 h at 815 K) condition, and in the as-welded condition. Some aged specimens were tested after pre-straining. Creep stresses ranged from 40 to 90 pct of the aged material yield strength. Results showed that creep was of the primary or transient kind in all cases, and was much greater in welded than in aged material. In general, pre-strains reduced creep, although a strain larger than 10-3 was needed to do this at the highest creep stress. Activation areas A* were between 10 and 20 b2, and thus were similar to tensile results on titanium and its alloys. The microstructural rationale applied to Ti-5 Al-2.5 Sn in earlier work, based on the character of dislocation sources, proved successful in understanding the effects of prestrain in this work. 采用化学成分满足ASTM B348—2010和GB/T 3620.1—2007要求的Ti-6Al-4V合金铸锭为原料,通过锻轧工序处理成丝坯,然后经过少道次大变形量控温热拉拔成2.6 mm丝材,最后采用在线退火的方式进行热处理。研究了O元素含量及退火冷却方式、加热温度和加热时间对Ti-6Al-4V合金丝材硬度稳定性的影响。结果表明,采用低氧含量Ti-6Al-4V合金(O含量≤0.12%)、高温快速加热(920℃×30 s及890℃×30 s)结合循环水急冷方式处理,丝材HV硬度值可稳定控制在280~300之间。  相似文献

The objective of the study was to evaluate the hypothesis that the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of removable partial dentures (RPD) made from cast titanium alloys can be improved by alloying with low-cost, low-melting elements such as Cu, Al, and Fe using commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V as controls. RPD specimens in the form of rest-shaped, clasp, rectangular-shaped specimens and round-bar tensile specimens were cast using an experimental Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy, Ti-5Al-1Fe, and Ti-1Fe in an Al2O3-based investment with a centrifugal-casting machine. The mechanical properties of the alloys were determined by performing tensile tests under a controlled displacement rate. The fatigue life of the RPD specimens was tested by the three-point bending in an MTS testing machine under a cyclic displacement of 0.5 mm. Fatigue tests were performed at 10 Hz at ambient temperature until the specimens failed into two pieces. The tensile data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA (α = 0.05) and the fatigue life data were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (α = 0.05). The experimental Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy showed a significantly higher average fatigue life than that of either CP-Ti or Ti-5Al-1Fe alloy (p < 0.05). SEM fractography showed that the fatigue cracks initiated from surface grains, surface pores, or hard particles in surface grains instead of the internal casting pores. Among the alloys tested, the Ti-5Al-5Cu alloy exhibited favorable results in fabricating dental appliances with an excellent fatigue behavior compared with other commercial alloys.  相似文献

Direct metal deposition (DMD) is a rapid laser-aided deposition method that can be used to manufacture near-net-shape components from their computer aided design (CAD) files. The method can be used to produce fully dense or porous metallic parts. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is widely used as an implantable material mainly in the application of orthopedic prostheses because of its high strength, low elastic modulus, excellent corrosion resistance, and good biocompatibility. In the present study, Ti-6Al-4V scaffold has been fabricated by DMD technology for patient specific bone tissue engineering. Good geometry control and surface finish have been achieved. The structure and properties of the scaffolds were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and tension test. The microstructures of laser-deposited Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds are fine Widmanstätten in nature. The tensile and yield strengths of the as-deposited Ti-6Al-4V were 1163 ± 22 and 1105 ± 19 MPa, respectively, which are quite higher than the ASTM limits (896 and 827 MPa) for Ti-6Al-4V implants. However, the ductility of the as-deposited sample was very low (~4 pct), which is well below the ASTM limit (10 pct). After an additional heat treatment (sample annealed at 950 °C followed by furnace cooling), both strength (UTS ~ 1045 ± 16, and YS ~ 959 ± 12 MPa) and ductility (~10.5 ± 1 pct) become higher than ASTM limits for medical implants.  相似文献

本研究分别利用水冷铜坩埚真空感应熔炼气雾化(VIGA-CC)和等离子旋转电极(PREP)两种技术制备出球形Ti-6Al-4V合金粉末,作者利用SEM、同步辐射CT扫描-三维重建和氩气含量测试等分析手段对不同粒径的Ti-6Al-4V合金粉末的孔洞缺陷和氩气含量、硬度值进行了表征。实验结果表明, VIGA-CC粉末粒度分布宽,细粉收得率较多,粉末粒度分布在40~180 μm之间, PREP粉末的粒度分布较窄,主要集中在110~180 μm之间;金属粉末内部的孔隙率、气体含量和孔尺寸随着粉末粒度的增大而增大,且同一粒径范围内VIGA-CC粉末的气孔概率多于PREP粉末;随着粉末粒径减小,粉末截面组织逐渐细化,其硬度值逐渐升高,整体上VIGA-CC粉末硬度值高于PREP粉末。  相似文献

Correlation of microstructure with the hardness, wear resistance, and fracture toughness of two-layered VC/Ti-6Al-4V surface composites fabricated by high-energy electron-beam irradiation was investigated in this study. A mixture of VC powders and CaF2 flux was deposited on a Ti-6Al-4V substrate, and then an electron beam was irradiated on these powder mixtures to fabricate an one-layered surface composite. A two-layered surface composite was fabricated by irradiating an electron-beam again onto the powder mixture deposited on the one-layered surface composite. The composite layers of 1.2 to 1.5 mm in thickness were homogeneously formed without defects and contained a large amount (25 to 40 vol pct) of carbides in the martensitic or β-Ti matrix. This microstructural modification, including the formation of hard carbides and hardened matrix, improved the hardness and wear resistance. Particularly in the two-layered surface composite containing more carbides, the wear resistance was greatly enhanced to a level 7 times higher than that of the Ti-6Al-4V substrate. In-situ observation of the fracture process showed that microcracks were initiated at carbides and propagated along these microcracked carbides and that shear bands were formed in the matrix between these microcracks. In the two-layered surface composite, numerous microcracks were initiated at many carbides and then rapidly propagated along them, thereby lowering the fracture toughness.  相似文献

Three methods for hardness-depth profiling were applied to a 200-nm-thick TiC film deposited onto a Ti-6Al-4V substrate. The methods were evaluated and compared with regard to their ability to detect local changes in hardness with a depth resolution on the order of a few nanometers. In the cross section method (CSM), the indentations are performed on a cross section of the sample, i.e., in a direction perpendicular to the hardness gradient. In the load-variation method (LVM) and in the constant-load method (CLM), the indentations are made in the direction of the hardness gradient, i.e., perpendicular to the as-prepared surface. In the LVM, the hardness-depth profile is assessed using a stepwise increase of the maximum load applied to the surface. In the CLM, sublayers are removed successively by ion sputtering and hardness measurements are performed at each newly exposed surface using the same low maximum load. The CSM revealed a nearly constant hardness across the TiC film and a sharp transition from the TiC film to the Ti-6Al-4V substrate. The hardness profile obtained using the LVM and the CLM is smeared out because the recorded response is due to both the TiC film and the underlying softer Ti-6Al-4V substrate.  相似文献
