FT Raman microscopy of untreated natural plant fibres

The application of FT-Raman microscopy to the non-destructive analysis of natural plant fibres is demonstrated with samples of flax, jute, ramie, cotton, kapok, sisal and coconut fibre. Vibrational assignments are proposed and characteristic features of each material are presented. Samples were not pre-treated chemically before analysis and were used directly from their respective storage collection; the adaptation of the Raman microscopic technique to the identification of specimens of natural fibres in archaeological burial sites is explored for its forensic potential.

FT infrared and Raman investigation of saccharide-phosphatidylcholine interactions using novel structure probes

Conformational consequences of adduct formation between saccharides (trehalose, glucose, raffinose) and sorbitol with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) in multibilayers are revealed by relative intensity changes of the band components corresponding to the nu asN(CH3)3 and nu sC-N(CH3)3 stretching modes of the choline chain terminal and those of the nu C = O band. The conformational sensitivity of those modes was demonstrated previously (J. Grdadolnik et al., Chem. Phys. Lipids 65 (1993) 121) and used to demonstrate the effects of stepwise hydration of phosphatidylcholines. The latter are compared with the effects of saccharide binding and found to be qualitatively similar, but not identical. The same is true of the low frequency shifts of the nu asPO2- vibration: the shifts due to saccharide binding correspond to the binding of six to seven water molecules per phosphate which is about 20 cm-1 less than the shift caused by full hydration. A particularly interesting finding concerns the appearance of two bands in the nu asPO2- region of the DPPC-saccharide adducts. The relative intensities of the two bands (1243 and 1223 cm-1) change on additional hydration; it is the one at 1223 cm-1 that prevails at high hydration levels. Major changes in saccharide conformation are not detectable but minor differences between the DPPC bound and crystal spectra are observed.     

Composition, constitution, and interaction of bone with hydroxyapatite coatings determined by FT Raman microscopy

Transfer of steroidal and nonsteroidal compounds across guinea pig amnion and chorion laeve was investigated as a function of stage of gestation, tissue orientation, steroid specificity, and molecular size. Each fetal membrane was examined at early and late stages of gestation, before and after pubic symphysis relaxation. Early amnion was impermeable to macromolecules and small charged molecules while [3H]estrone and [3H]pregnenolone were transferred, the latter depending on tissue orientation and involving conjugation at the basolateral interface. After symphysis dilation, amnion transferred all substrates tested with the exception of BSA; the molecular weight cutoff was approximately 5,000. Unlike amnion, early chorion transferred both free and conjugated steroids as well as inorganic sulfate. Transfer of estrone involved conjugation and depended on tissue orientation. Transfer of [3H]estrone-sulfate, [3H]estrone-glucuronide, and [3H]pregnenolone-sulfate was similar despite selective deconjugating activity toward estrone-sulfate. Near term, chorion was impermeable to inorganic sulfate and transfer of estrone-glucuronide depended on tissue orientation, involving deconjugation in the maternal to fetal direction. At no stage of gestation did chorion transfer macromolecules. These results suggest that the transfer of free and conjugated steroids across fetal membranes is differentially regulated by tissue, its stage of development, and direction of transfer.

Moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the rectum: a case report of remarkable response to preoperative administration of FT suppository]

A 50-year-old man with moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the rectum was operated upon following preoperative administration of FT suppository. Digital examination, colonoscopy, and barium enema showed an elevated lesion with central ulcer of the rectum. Microscopically, the biopsy specimen demonstrated moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. FT suppository (1,500 mg/day for 52 days, total 78 g) was administered on an outpatient basis. Rectal amputation including lymph node dissection was performed. The tumor markedly reduced in size and changed into a small ulcer in the resected specimen. Microscopically, the tumor degenerated and changed into xanthogranulomatous tissue with foamy histiocytes. Only two tubules of degenerated adenocarcinoma remained. FT suppository for rectal cancer is considered to be safe and effective.     

Changes in the binding capacity of thyroxine-binding globulin (TBC), of total thyroxine (T4), of the free thyroxine index (FT4-I) and of thyrotropin (TSH) during normal pregnancy and in hydatidiform mole

TBC-index and total serum thyroxine were measured in 100 healthy nonpregnant and in 163 pregnant women during the 8. and 41. weeks of gestation. The free thyroxine index was calculated. The TBC-index was found to be elevated in pregnant women and rose continously with duration of pregnancy. The amount of total serum thyroxine was greater in pregnant women (p less than 0,01) without difference between early and late pregnancy. The free thyroxine index decreased continously during pregnancy (p less than 0,01). Serum TSH level were elevated during the first two trimesters of pregnancy. At the third trimester the TSH level were found within the normal range. In patients with hydatidiform mole TSH, total thyroxine, FT4-index, ETR-index as well as TSH levels were increased.
