This study evaluated 2 off-the-shelf, computer-based, mathematics intelligent-tutoring systems that provide instruction in algebra during a remedial mathematics summer program. The majority of the enrolled high school students failed to pass algebra in the previous semester. Students were randomly assigned in approximately equal proportions to work with the Carnegie Learning Algebra Cognitive Tutor or the ALEKS Algebra Course. Using the tutoring system exclusively, the students completed a 4-h-a-day, 14-day summer school high school algebra class for credit. The results revealed that both tutoring systems produced statistically and practically meaningful learning gains on measures of arithmetic and algebra knowledge. 相似文献

The Open University's Virtual Summer School took place in 1994 and was an experimental project which aimed to use technology to support students who were unable to attend a conventional campus‐based summer school. Students on many courses at the Open University are expected to attend summer school, but for some students this is impossible. In the Virtual Summer School, 12 students used a wide range of software to communicate with tutors and each other, attend lectures and tutorials, access resources and complete projects in groups. The students were studying Cognitive Psychology and the work involved a range of activities including programming, carrying out experiments and statistical analysis. The evaluation used a series of questionnaires to the students, which were compared with those of students at conventional summer school. This paper provides an overview of the Virtual Summer School, presents a selection of the results of the evaluation and discusses the issues which arose out of the evaluation. 相似文献

A job exposure matrix of ergonomics risk factors was constructed for school custodial workers in one large school district in the province of British Columbia using 100 h of 1-min fixed-interval observations, participatory worker consensus on task durations and existing employment and school characteristic data. Significant differences in ergonomics risk factors were found by tasks and occupations. Cleaning and moving furniture, handling garbage, cleaning washrooms and cleaning floors were associated with the most physical risks and the exposure was often higher during the summer vs. the school year. Injury rates over a 4-year period showed the custodian injury rate was four times higher than the overall injury rate across all occupations in the school district. Injury rates were significantly higher in the school year compared with summer (12.2 vs. 7.0 per 100 full-time equivalents per year, p < 0.05). Custodial workers represent a considerable proportion of the labour force and have high injury rates, yet ergonomic studies are disproportionately few. Previous studies that quantified risk factors in custodial workers tended to focus on a few tasks or specific risk factors. This study, using participatory ergonomics and observational methods, systematically quantifies the broad range of musculoskeletal risk factors across multiple tasks performed by custodial workers in schools, adding considerably to the methodological literature. 相似文献

Research indicates that students often opt out of computing majors due to a lack of prior experience in computing and a lack of knowledge of field-based job opportunities. In addition, it has been found that students respond positively to new subjects when teachers and counselors are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the area. The summer program described here is designed to improve high school students, teachers and guidance counselors understanding of the opportunities available in computing related fields, specifically information technology through a summer enrichment experience. The hypothesis of this work is that by exposing teachers and counselors to professional development in this field, their attitudes, beliefs and knowledge regarding information technology will be enhanced, thus impacting students’ attitudes (both attending the program and beyond) with respect to information technology and their desire to pursue degrees in this area. Results indicate that the design of this summer program enhanced the knowledge and interest of high school students with respect to information technology. Teachers’ knowledge was also positively influenced. Further refinements are necessary in the design of this program to improve the experiences of guidance counselors. 相似文献

Few epidemiological studies have investigated the relationship between work exposures and injury risk among custodians. The relationship between injury risk and occupational physical demands (e.g. pushing/pulling, lifting) and school environment characteristics (e.g. school type, season) was investigated among a cohort of 581 school custodians over a 4-year period. In the final Poisson regression models, the risk of injury was associated with time spent in pushing/pulling tasks in a dose-response manner increasing to a five-fold risk among the highest quartile of exposure (risk ratio?=?5.15, 95% CI 1.00, 26.5). Injury risk was also associated with working during the school year compared to the summer, working in a school with grass vs. gravel grounds and working in a school with detached classrooms. Results help to target interventions such as alternative methods for floor cleaning to reduce the pushing/pulling demands of custodial work and to support decisions for alternatives to detached classrooms and grass surfaces. Statement of Relevance: This study examines ergonomic factors (physical demand exposures, school environment characteristics) associated with injury risk among custodial school workers. The findings help schools to target interventions to reduce the physical demands associated with injuries and to design school environments to reduce exposures. 相似文献

His research in machine learning, neural networks and agent-based computing still influence AI today. This paper describes the development and evaluation of CAL software developed for the Open University course “S271—Discovering Physics”. The programs are used by students at week-long summer schools which combine the practical experience of doing physics experiments with remedial tutorial sessions. A wide range of computer tutorials, simulated experiments and tutorial simulations as well as programs to enhance traditional physics experiments were produced. The software was implemented on the TERAK 8510/a graphics microcomputer. The project incorporated the development of an “implementation system” (called OASIS) based on UCSD Pascal to simplify such aspects as text layout, response parsing and graphics. An important part of the project was a program of testing and evaluation by staff and students at a week long summer schoolin 1981. Reactions to the programs were assessed using log sheets, interviews and questionnaires (both written and interactive using a microcomputer) as well as direct observation. The software and the associated printed material were completely redesigned on the basis of the results of this study. Another outcome of the evaluation was the acquisition of knowledge of how students use the CAL software in the environment of a physics summer school. 相似文献
