Many occupations require standing for prolonged periods, which can be a major contributor to musculoskeletal problems and cause disturbances in different parts of the body, especially the lower back and lower extremities. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of custom‐made insoles and exercise training on the lower limb and lower back discomfort in workers on a production line at a rubber tire factory. One hundred male workers (mean age 35.96 years, work experience of 10.62 years, standing time 6.58 hr) participated in this randomized controlled trial. The men were randomly assigned to one of four groups: (a) custom‐made insole plus lower limb exercises, (b) insoles only, (c) lower limb exercises only, and (d) no intervention. Discomfort level was recorded with a visual analog scale and a body map. The data were analyzed with analysis of covariance. The results showed a significant difference in discomfort levels between groups in the lower back (p = .001), thigh (p = .001), and knee (p = .001) areas. The combined insole and exercise group had less discomfort in the lower back, thigh, and knee. In the group that used the insole only without exercises, the discomfort level in the lower back area was reduced. The results indicate that the simultaneous use of insoles and exercises might be an effective intervention to reduce discomfort in the lower limbs and lower back in workers who remain standing for prolonged periods.  相似文献

Twenty-one male blue collar workers repeatedly lifted (palletized) a box weighing 22 kg six times min-1 for 5 min to a shelf of fixed height. The experimental conditions included two planes of lifting (symmetries), two shelf clearances, and three headrooms. The metabolic (heart rate, caloric cost and ventilation volume) and psychophysical variables (rate of perceived exertion, RPE; visual analogue score, VAS; and body part discomfort ratings, BPDR) were measured during resting, palletization, and recovery phases. In palletization the heart rate and metabolic cost ranged between 25 to 35% of the maximal aerobic capacity. Of the three factors only headroom had a significant effect on metabolic cost (p < 0.02) and the BPDR for low back (p < 0.05). In the recovery phase only headroom had significantly effect (p < 0.001) on metabolic cost. The metabolic recovery took 10 min; however, recovery measured through psychophysical indices appeared to continue for 20 min.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to study the effects of 12 weeks of circuit weight training and aerobic exercise on body composition, physical fitness, and pulse wave velocity in obese collegiate women. Twelve obese collegiate women were randomly assigned either to an exercise training group (TG) or control group (CG). The main exercise program was composed of an approximately 40–65 min session of circuit weight training (resistance training and aerobic exercise) as well as jogging at an intensity of 50–70% of the age-predicted heart rate reserve. The circuit weight training program was made by Korean Institute of Sport Science and was modified as needed for obese collegiate women. All analyses were performed using SPSS and all data was reported as mean ± standard deviation (SD). Significant differences between groups were determined using a two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a post hoc test (Tukey method). Statistical significance was accepted for all tests at a value of p < 0.05. The results indicated that after the 12-week intervention, there were no significant changes in body weight, % body fat, or WC in either group. There was a significant interaction of time by group with respect to body weight (p < 0.05), % body fat (p < 0.01), and WC (p < 0.01) and there was a significant change in back strength between the TG before beginning the program and the TG after having completed the program (p < 0.01). There was also a significant interaction of time by group with respect to back strength (p < 0.01), grip strength (p < 0.05), sit and reach (p < 0.01), sargent-jump (p < 0.01), and the one leg balance with eyes closed (p < 0.01); however, these differences were not statistically significant between groups. Further, there was a significant interaction of time by group with respect to the 1,200 m run for cardiopulmonary endurance (p < 0.01); however, this difference was not statistically significant between the TG pre and TG post. In addition, there was a significant in sit-ups (p < 0.01) and the 1,200 m run (p < 0.01) between the TG and CG. There was no significant difference in side-steps between the TG and CG. Further, there were no significant differences in the pulse wave velocity, RPP, SBP, DBP, and MAP between the TG and CG. In conclusion, circuit weight training and aerobic exercise had favorable effects on the occurrence of obesity and physical fitness in obese collegiate women.  相似文献

This study examined body posture, subjective discomfort, and stability, requiring the participants to ride a stationary bicycle for 20 min (cadence: 60 rpm; workrate: 120 W), using various combinations of two handle heights and five seat-protruding node lengths (PNLs). The results indicated that bicycle handle height significantly influenced body posture, and that seat PNL caused differences in the riders' subjective discomfort and stability scores. The various PNLs affected only the trunk angle (approximately 6°), but had significantly positive (r = 0.994, p < .005) and negative (r = −0.914, p < .05) correlations with the subjective discomfort rating for perineum and ischial tuberosity, respectively. When the participants were seated at PNL = 0 or 3 cm, cycling using dropped handles was less stable compared with using straight handles; however, the handle height did not affect the cycling stability when the PNL was ≥6 cm. The results suggest that a 6-cm PNL is the optimal reference for bicycle seat designs.  相似文献

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of and factors contributing to musculoskeletal system complaints (MSC) in office workers of a vehicle production factory and absenteeism due to these complaints. A total of 86.2% (n = 333) of the workers completed the survey. Of the workers, 73 (21.9%) were women, and 260 (78.1%) were men, and the mean age was 36.9 ± 8.75 years. The majority of the personnel had more than one symptom with a prevalence of 80.8%. The most frequently observed discomfort was tension and pain in the back muscles (58.6%) and in the neck muscles (58.3%), followed by low back pain (41%) and shoulder pain (30.3%). Pain in the shoulders, neck, and the back and pain and numbness in the fingers were statistically significantly more prevalent in employees who spent more than 5 hours per day performing desk work. Furthermore, all of the complaints, excluding pain in the elbows and knees, were statistically significantly more common in the women. When each complaint and the effects of contributing risk factors were analyzed by logistic regression analysis, pain in the shoulders, neck, and back; pain that spread to the arms; and pain in the fingers were correlated with longer work hours and the female gender (p < 0.05). The number of employees who had used sick leave within the past year due to MSCs was 11.7%. In conclusion, duration of work hours, frequency of breaks, and gender were determined as the most important risk factors in computer users regarding MSCs. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

There is little epidemiological data to make reliable conclusions about the effects of exposure to cold on the body’s physiological responses. The current study aimed to address this lacuna in the available research. The study sample consisted of 50 outdoor mechanic workers as a case group and 15 staff members as a control group used in the outdoor automechanic workshops. Air environmental factors, including dry‐bulb temperature and air velocity, were measured by the portable hot wire thermo anemometer in the workstation of each subject. The body’s physiological responses were also measured during daily activities in accordance with ISO 9886. Using Semmes–Weinstein monofilament, touch sensory tests were conducted for determining hands’ sensorineural functions. The baseline measurements showed the mechanic workers had lower finger sensation levels and finger skin temperatures than the control group (p < 0.05). This may be attributed to long‐term exposure to acute cold air during cold seasons. However, after short‐term exposure to extreme cold environment, the mechanic workers showed lower losses in finger skin temperatures and finger sensation levels than the control group ( p < 0.05). The findings confirmed that prolonged localized cold exposure among mechanic workers can result in localized habituation of vasoconstrictor responses.  相似文献

A laboratory study was conducted to determine the effects of back disability status on endurance time and perceived discomfort during trunk flexion. Eighty participants (40 with chronic or recurrent low back pain (CRLBP), 40 pain-free) were tested. The trunk was flexed to 15°, 30°, 45° and 60° under three conditions: 1) continuous static flexion; 2) cyclical flexion with 20% rest; and 3) cyclical flexion with 40% rest. Each condition was performed for up to 600?s or until the participant reached his/her pain tolerance limit. Dependent variables included time to distracting discomfort (TDD), total endurance time (TET) and perceived discomfort. For continuous exertions, CRLBP participants had lower TDD (p?<?0.001), lower TET (p?<?0.001) and greater discomfort (p?<?0.001) compared to pain-free controls. In both groups, TDD and TET decreased and perceived discomfort increased as the flexion angle increased. For intermittent exertions, CRLBP participants reported greater discomfort than pain-free participants (p?<?0.001). Increasing rest from 20 to 40% reduced discomfort in CRLBP participants, but produced no consistent benefit in pain-free participants. To accommodate persons with CRLBP, consideration should be given to reducing both the magnitude (angle) and duration of trunk flexion required by their jobs.  相似文献

The introduction of Computerized Numeric Control (CNC) technology in manufacturing industries revolutionized the production process a few decades back. There are some health and safety problems associated with these machine operations, however. The main objectives of the present work is to study the health and safety issues associated with the CNC machines with respect to control and display, specifically to determine the frequency, intensity of discomfort, and its interference in operating different CNC machines as reported by the workers operating them. The postural discomfort associated with CNC machines was studied, and the frequency, intensity of discomfort, and interference of the level of discomfort with the participants' ability to work were recorded and analyzed. The study revealed that 20.5% of the operators reported discomfort 1 or 2 times, 25.4% experienced discomfort 3 to 4 times in a week, 37.7% had discomfort daily, and 16.4% reported discomfort several times a day. Discomfort was reported in all the body parts involved (lower back, neck, upper back, shoulder, and leg), but the highest discomfort scores were associated with the shoulder and arm region. Workers reporting discomfort several times a day also reported high mean discomfort scores. The study established that the frequency and intensity of the discomfort in all body parts is related to the position of the control panel and display. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

This study aims to investigate the influence of double‐layer clothing in a semiconductor manufacturing clean‐room environment. Twenty subjects including ten males and ten females participated in this study. Each subject completed four treatment combinations with four different inner pieces of clothing (i.e., 100% cotton, 70% cotton + 30% polyester, 65% polyester + 35% cotton, 100% polyester). The dependent measures included moisture absorption, skin temperature, and subjective responses in three body regions. The results indicate that wearing 100% polyester inner clothing caused a significant increase in inner microclimate relative humidity (RH; p < .01). Wearing 100% cotton inner clothing caused a significant increase in both inner microclimate RH (p < .01) and the inner clothing's moisture absorption. This was due to cotton fiber tends to trap more water molecules and allow less water vapor to pass through as compared to other types of fiber. Furthermore, wearing the blended fiber inner clothing caused lower RH in the inner and outer clothing microclimate (p < .05). Moreover, wearing 65% polyester + 35% cotton inner clothing had higher subjective comfort than did wearing 70% cotton + 30% polyester. In summary, the moisture absorption and water vapor transport characteristics of the inner clothing are the major factors affecting the comfort of wearing double‐layer clothing. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the differences in the number of paving stones laid (productivity), task demands, energetic workload, body region discomfort and preference when laying paving stones with or without use of a paver’s trolley (n = 8) in a within-subject controlled study of pavers. The number of paving stones laid and the task demands were measured by means of systematic observations at the workplace. The energetic workload was determined using the percentage of heart rate reserve (%HRR). Body region discomfort was measured using visual analog scales, and the workers’ preference was ascertained via interview. The use of a paver’s trolley had no effect on productivity, %HRR or body region discomfort compared to working without a paver’s trolley. The duration of knee-straining activities did not differ between working with (141 min) and without (146 min) the paver’s trolley. However, six of the eight pavers indicated that, given suitable circumstances, they wanted to use the paver’s trolley.

Relevance to industry

To reduce the chance of work-related low back and knee complaints among pavers, the duration, frequency and intensity of lower back and knee-straining activities should be limited by means of technical measures such as mechanical paving. The paver’s trolley does not appear to reduce knee-straining activities and therefore does not appear useful in reducing the risk of knee complaints and disorders.  相似文献

This study presents data on self-reported prevalence of Musculo-Skeletal Disorder (MSD) symptoms and psychosocial risk exposures by age and gender among a group of office based University workers who use their computers for at least 25% of their workday. Employees in two academic organisations received an invitation to participate in an on-line questionnaire. A total of n = 852 office workers participated in this study; yet respondents who were employed for greater than 12 months were only included in the study cohort. Furthermore, participants were only considered for further analysis if they spent 50% or more of their workday in their office, and of this time at least 50% was spent on computer work (n = 569). The study indicates that self-reported symptoms of MSDs for these workers were highest in the neck, shoulder and lower back. Neck, shoulder and back MSDs were higher for females than males, yet age differences within genders were not evident for these symptoms. For neck disorders, symptomatic individuals reported significantly higher levels of office work (p < 0.05) and PC usage (p < 0.005), and significantly lower levels of job content (p < 0.01), job demands (p < 0.05), and work environment (p < 0.05) compared to asymptomatic participants. For the shoulder, symptomatic individuals exposure levels were significantly higher for office work (p < 0.05) and PC usage (p < 0.05) and significantly lower for job content (p < 0.05) compared to asymptomatic individuals. There was evidence of important differences in the psychosocial exposures between age and genders, but associations between these differences and MSD symptoms were not present.Relevance to industryThis study presents prevalence data on age and gender differences in self-reported symptoms of MSDs and psychosocial risk exposures in a group of sedentary workers.  相似文献

We investigated the muscle fatigue and degree of discomfort for seven combinations of positions in a touchpad and two click‐buttons (one hand: center, midright, and right in position of touchpad and buttons; two hands: all centered, centered touchpad and left buttons, right touchpad and centered buttons, and right touchpad and left buttons) while using a laptop PC. Sixteen subjects participated in tasks involving the operation of a touchpad and two click‐buttons. The muscle fatigue was evaluated by applying median frequency electromyography (EMG) for 5 minutes to the subjects while they were performing each task, and the overall degree of discomfort was measured by fuzzy logic questions after the completion of each condition. When using only one hand, the right position resulted in the lowest muscle fatigue and degree of discomfort in comparison with the other conditions (p < .05). When using two hands, the right placement of the touchpad and the left one of the buttons showed the lowest results in both the muscle fatigue and degree of discomfort (p < .05). On the other hand, the traditional centered locations in the case of both one hand and two hands were the most disadvantageous for the shoulder and wrist. The results indicate that the traditional location of the touchpad and click‐buttons in the center induced abduction in both the shoulder and the wrist, which was expressed as an increase in muscle fatigue and overall discomfort. Therefore, developing a configuration in which it is possible to adjust the positions of the touchpad and buttons based on the user's preference is required.  相似文献

Many occupations require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) but the added metabolic demands are unknown for certain professions. The purpose of this study was to quantify metabolic and perceptual differences between activity with and without the PPE ensemble required for police officers. Twelve participants were asked to complete experimental and control exercise sessions consisting of three modes of exercise (walking, jogging and stepping). A significant main effect (p < 0.01) for gear was found for heart rate (beats per minute) and VO2 (L/min) between conditions. Dependent t-tests revealed significant differences for perceived effort, discomfort and session rating of perceived exertion between trials. Medium to large effect sizes for all variables with significant main effects between modes (p < 0.01, η2 = 0.51–0.96, 1–β = 0.98–1.0, d = 0.42–2.7) were observed. These findings help to increase awareness of how PPE affects metabolic demands and perception of discomfort during exercise.  相似文献

Soldiers carry heavy loads that may cause general discomfort, shoulder pain and injury. This study assessed if new body armour designs that incorporated a hip belt reduced shoulder pressures and improved comfort. Twenty-one Australian soldiers completed treadmill walking trials wearing six different body armours with two different loads (15 and 30 kg). Contact pressures applied to the shoulders were measured using pressure pads, and qualitative assessment of comfort and usability were acquired from questionnaires administered after walking trials. Walking with hip belt compared to no hip belt armour resulted in decreased mean and maximum shoulder pressures (p < 0.005), and 30% fewer participants experiencing shoulder discomfort (p < 0.005) in best designs, although hip discomfort did increase. Laterally concentrated shoulder pressures were associated with 1.34-times greater likelihood of discomfort (p = 0.026). Results indicate body armour and backpack designs should integrate a hip belt and distribute load closer to shoulder midline to reduce load carriage discomfort and, potentially, injury risk.

Practitioner Summary: Soldiers carry heavy loads that increase their risk of discomfort and injury. New body armour designs are thought to ease this burden by transferring the load to the hips. This study demonstrated that designs incorporating a hip belt reduced shoulder pressure and shoulder discomfort compared to the current armour design.  相似文献

Ergonomics has positive effects on both physical health and productivity, but estimating productivity benefits is difficult at the task design/redesign stage. Rest‐allowance prediction models are not suitable for repetitive, short‐cycle dynamic tasks, and methods–time measurement (MTM) techniques are limited in their suitability for considering ergonomics risk factors such as posture and force. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between force and exertion duration on self‐selected duty cycle time and discomfort. Twenty‐one participants completed repetitive, upper‐limb exertion treatments, each of a 10‐minute duration. Five levels of force (10, 20, 40, 65, and 80% maximum voluntary contraction [MVC]) and exertion period (1, 2, 4, 6.5, and 8 seconds) were investigated. The psychophysical adjustment method was used whereby participants self‐selected a work pace for the second half of each treatment. Duty cycle, derived from the self‐paced cycle time, was the measure of productivity effects in the experiment. Analysis of variance revealed a significant effect on duty cycle time for force, exertion period, and their interaction (each p < 0.0001). Friedman's test indicated a significant effect of force (p < 0.0001) and exertion period (p < 0.0001) on discomfort. Spearman's correlation analysis showed a strong correlation between discomfort and duty cycle time (p < 0.05). Multiple regression analysis was used to develop a predictive model for duty cycle time based on force and exertion period, and this was a good fit to the data (R2 = 0.98, p < 0.05). Previous studies have suggested that the two-handled (levered) shovel is advantageous over the conventional spade from a biomechanical point of view. The aim of this experiment was to determine whether less energy was consumed while shovelling a load of sand with this shovel compared to a conventional tool. Accordingly, an experiment was designed in which subjects (n = 10) shovelled 1815 kg sand under laboratory conditions using either a conventional or a levered shovel. Heart rate and oxygen consumption were measured continuously during the trial and subjective data on perceived exertion, general fatigue and body discomfort were recorded after the trial. Although total energy expenditure was similar under both conditions (120±20 and 125±25 kcal; conventional versus two-handled spade), average heart rate was 4% higher when the two-handled &lt;. shovel was used (p<0 05). In addition, the mass of sand per scoop was 4% less &lt;. with the two-handled shovel (p<0 05). In conclusion, subjects used similar energy expenditure to shovel 1815 kg sand with the conventional shovel and the twohandled tool despite lower mass of sand per scoop with the latter. This can be explained by the fact that the increased mass of the additional handle compensated for the lower mass of sand per scoop. The higher average heart rate while shovelling with the two-handled shovel can be explained by the more erect posture.  相似文献

Abstract

In this investigation the physical fitness of 34 recruits to the UK Fire Service was assessed before and after their initial training (tests 1–2) and on three occasions (tests 3–5) during the first 18 months of their service (n=34+6=40). The initial training (test 2-test 1) resulted in an increase in maximum aerobic power (11% p<0·05), body mass (2 kg, p<0·001), lean body mass (2·02 kg, p<0·001), grip and lifting strengths (/><0·001), and in calf girth (p<0·05). But no change in waist girth, maximum anaerobic power or measures of lung function was noted. There was evidence therefore that the men became physically fitter. In the first eighteen months of their service, subjects' maximum oxygen consumption declined to pre-training levels, while body mass continued to increase with a decrease in lean body mass (p<0·001). Strength remained unaltered or tended to fall with a decrease in calf girth (p<0·05). These changes reflected a return towards pre-training physical fitness levels. It is suggested that the initial training, while ill-matched to the firemen's habitual activity, produced levels of physical fitness which may approximate more closely to the infrequent peak requirements experienced by the men during actual fire fighting. Consequently it is concluded that the physical training during service was insufficiently intense and that a more effective programme could be designed to maintain an appropriate level of physical fitness  相似文献

Seat pitch, defined as the distance from a point on the back of one seat to the same point on the seat in front, is one of the most important factors influencing aircraft seating comfort. This study assessed the influence of different airline seat pitches on subjective ratings of discomfort and body-seat interface contact pressures. This was a laboratory within-subjects study using an aircraft interior mock up to vary seat pitch. Twelve participants completed 1 h of sitting in each of five different seat pitches (28inches, 30inches, 32inches, 34inches, and 36inches). Interface pressure mats measured seat and backrest pressure distribution, subjective rating scales were used to measure overall and local body region discomfort. The results showed that overall body and local body region discomfort ratings tend to be lower when the seat pitch increased from 28 inches to 36 inches (p < 0.05). For pressure variables, the upper back average contact area, upper/lower back average contact pressure, upper/lower back average peak contact pressure, right buttock average contact area, left/right thigh buttock average peak contact pressure, and left buttock average peak contact pressure were significantly affected by seat pitch(p < 0.05). Separate analyses support that seat pitch was more strongly correlated with backrest interface pressure than with seat pan pressure. In conclusion, seat pitch was found to be an important factor associated with body-seat contact pressure and discomfort ratings.  相似文献

This study compared lifting strength patterns between experienced workers and novices at various exertion heights. Twenty-one experienced workers and 21 novices were recruited to determine their static-lifting strength under various heights (10-150 cm in increments of 10 cm) using two exertion methods (vertically upward lifting, VUL, and toward body lifting, TBL). Testing posture was also recorded by a motion analysis system for comparing with the corresponding strength values.Results showed that strength during VUL were much higher than strength during TBL at 15 height positions (p < 0.001). Strength in all 30 task combinations showed no difference between the two groups except for the VUL at heights of 100-120 cm. On the average, strength exerted by novices during VUL was 4.57-7.61 kg lower than that of workers while lifting at 100-120 cm heights (all p < 0.05). The strength during TBL consistently decreased with increased heights of lifting. When workers performed VUL, the strength surprisingly remained nearly unchanged throughout the heights of interest. The postures adopted by workers during VUL were also highly differentiated from novices while performing near-floor positions, but the strength was equivalent to each other. This study demonstrated that the static-lifting strength of novices were significantly lower than those of experienced workers while upward lifting near the participant’s elbow height. It was concluded that workers tend to adopt a safer (i.e., more flexed knees) and more skillful technique than novices to generate forces, resulting in lower spinal loads during both methods of lifting.

Relevance to Industry

Many studies have established the human strength data based on student participants who do not have experience in manual materials handling. The present findings clearly suggest that lifting strength data collected on novices (e.g., on students) should be carefully applied in the task (re)design at the workplace as their strength profiles and the postures adopted during lifting differ from workers.  相似文献

This study aims to assess the effects of repetitive motion-induced fatigue during manual packaging on kinematics and muscle activity of the arm, back and shoulder. Eighteen participants performed a 60-min manual packaging task. Electromyography median frequency of RUT, RES, LES and RB decreased by 13.2% (p < 0.05), 12.8% (p < 0.05), 11.3% (p < 0.05) and 21% (p < 0.001), respectively over time. The head flexion and the right upper arm flexion angles significantly (p < 0.001) differed among different packaging sizes, and similar results were observed for left upper arm flexion and rotation. The trunk and pelvis angles significantly (p < 0.05) differed over time under three kinds of packaging. The results showed there was an increase in the rating of perceived exertion from 8.56 to 16.94 (p<0.01) during the task. The outcomes of this study indicate repetitive movements in the manual packaging task resulted in elevated prevalence of muscle discomfort in packaging workers, especially the right brachioradialis. Interventions such as specific work: rest ratios, workplace redesign should be explored to relieve muscle fatigue and discomfort.Relevance to industryFor workers performing repetitive manual packaging tasks, biomechanical analysis of different muscles groups can help in developing appropriate ergonomic interventions.  相似文献
