Fatigue damage of butt‐welded joints is investigated by a damage mechanics method. First, the weld‐induced residual stresses are determined by using a sequentially coupled thermo‐mechanical finite element analysis. The plastic damage of material is then calculated with the use of Lemaitre's plastic damage model. Second, during the subsequent fatigue damage analysis, the residual stresses are superimposed on the fatigue loading, and the weld‐induced plastic damage is considered as the initial damage via an elasto‐plastic fatigue damage model. Finally, the fatigue damage evolution, the relaxation of residual stress, and the fatigue lives of the joints are evaluated using a numerical implementation. The predicted results agree well with the experimental data.  相似文献

This work deals with the fatigue behaviour of S355NL steel welded joints classically used in naval structures. The approach suggested here, in order to estimate the fatigue crack initiation life, can be split into two stages. First, stabilized stress–strain cycles are obtained in all points of the welded joint by a finite element analysis, taking constant or variable amplitude loadings into account. This calculation takes account of: base metal elastic–plastic behaviour, variable yield stress based on hardness measurements in various zones of the weld, local geometry at the weld toe and residual stresses if any. Second, if a fast elastic shakedown occurs, a two-scale damage model based on Lemaitre et al. 's work is used as a post-processor in order to estimate the fatigue crack initiation life. Material parameters for this model were identified from two Wöhler curves established for base metal. As a validation, four-point bending fatigue tests were carried out on welded specimens supplied by 'DCNS company'. Two load ratios were considered: 0.1 and 0.3. Residual stress measurements by X-ray diffraction completed this analysis. Comparisons between experimental and calculated fatigue lives are promising for the considered loadings. An exploitation of this method is planned for another welding process.  相似文献

Arc welding typically generates residual tensile stresses in welded joints, leading to deteriorated fatigue performance of these joints. Volume expansion of the weld metal at high temperatures followed by contraction during cooling induces a local tensile residual stress state. A new type of welding wire capable of inducing a local compressive residual stress state by means of controlled martensitic transformation at relatively low temperatures has been studied, and the effects of the transformation temperature and residual stresses on fatigue strength are discussed. In this study, several LTTW (Low Transformation‐Temperature Welding) wires have been developed and investigated to better characterize the effect of phase transformation on residual stress management in welded joints. Non‐load‐carrying cruciform fillet welded joints were prepared for measurement of residual stresses and fatigue testing. The measurement of the residual stresses of the three designed wires reveals a compressive residual stress near the weld toe. The fatigue properties of the new wires are enhanced compared to a commercially available wire.  相似文献

Ahead of sharp V‐notches, residual stresses, arising from the solidification of a fusion zone, have the same asymptotic nature of the stress field induced by mechanical loads. This stress field significantly affects the engineering properties of structural components, notably fatigue life and corrosion resistance of welded joints. Tensile residual stresses can reduce the fatigue strength of welded joints particularly in the high‐cycle regime, where no stress redistribution due to local plasticity phenomena is expected to be present. The aim of this work is to analyse, by means of the numerical simulation, the residual stress redistribution near a V‐notch tip induced by cyclic loads and to propose a method, based on the local strain energy approach, for the fatigue resistance estimation of pre‐stressed components. The numerical solutions of the problem were carried out under the hypothesis of generalized plane strain conditions by means of SYSWELD and SYSTUS codes.  相似文献

Experimental analyses on the structural response caused by local fatigue damage accumulation in welded details are accomplished to perform failure process and nonlinear effect analysis at different structural levels. The experiment is carried out by using welded compact tension (CT) specimens and a scaled truss specimen, and all of them have a notch at the weld toe to facilitate damage initiation. Cyclic loads are applied to those specimens to generate accumulative fatigue damage, respectively. The process of fatigue accumulation including initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in the welded detail and resultant structural responses of CT specimens and the truss are measured with integration of multiple testing techniques. Multi‐scale experimental results show that microscopic‐/mesoscopic‐concentrated strain and extension of plastic zone in the vicinity of notch tip are both affected significantly by the fatigue damage accumulation and present appreciable nonlinear behaviour; however, the macroscopic response such as the frequency and stiffness parameters of the welded truss specimen are less sensitive to the low‐level fatigue damage. It is concluded that the fatigue failure of the welded truss is a multi‐scale progressive process due to fatigue damage trans‐scale evolving, in which the local meso‐damage firstly affects local strain of plastic zone in the vicinity of the notch tip, and then fatigue damage evolving from meso‐ to macro‐scale affects nonlinear responses of the damaged components; lastly, the fatigue failure could be expected as the results of the propagation of macroscopic fatigue cracks.  相似文献

The impact of residual stresses on the fatigue crack initiation life of welded joints is evaluated by the finite element method. The residual stresses of nonload‐carrying cruciform joints, induced by welding and ultrasonic impact treatment, are modelled by initial stresses, using the linear superposition principle. An alternative approach of using modified stress‐strain curves in the highly stressed zone is also proposed to account for the residual stress effect on the local stress‐strain history. An evaluation of the fatigue crack initiation life of welded joints based on the local strain approach is carried out. The predicted results show the effect of residual stresses and agree well with published experimental results of as‐welded and ultrasonic impact treated specimens, demonstrating the applicability of both approaches. The proposed approaches may provide effective tools to evaluate the residual stress effect on the fatigue crack initiation life of welded joints.  相似文献

Abstract: In this paper, strain‐based fatigue life prediction method has been used to estimate the fatigue crack initiation life of spot‐welded joints of Mild Steel JSC270D and Ultra‐High Strength Steel JSC980Y. To do so, the joints were simulated using three‐dimensional finite‐element (FE) models, and then nonlinear FE analysis was performed to obtain the local stress and strain ranges and finally, the Morrow equation was applied to estimate the crack initiation lives. The results have been compared with those obtained from experimental crack growth morphology. In addition, the difference between fatigue limits for smooth specimens and spot‐welded joints for mentioned materials has been briefly discussed. It has been shown that mean stress values in the Ultra‐High Strength Steel can significantly decrease the fatigue limit of spot‐welded joint because even at very low load level the stresses exceed the yield point at the root of nugget of spot‐welded joint, while the amount of mean stress in the Mild Steel for the same load level is much less than that of Ultra‐High Strength Steel. The comparison between numerical results of fatigue crack initiation lives and experimental data provided good agreement between numerical predictions and crack growth morphology observations. The results also shows that in some cases, depending on the joint type, the life spent in the nucleation phase can be an important part of the final failure lifetime.  相似文献

In this work laser‐welded tube‐tube specimens made of aluminium alloys AlMg3.5Mn and AlSi1MgMn T6 were experimentally tested under constant and variable amplitude loading, under pure axial and pure torsion loading. In order to evaluate the influence on fatigue behaviour of the residual stresses, because of the welding process, some specimens were subjected to postweld heat treatment and then were tested. The numerical analyses, using finite element (FE), were carried out to obtain a reliable estimation of the residual stress in the specimen. The numerical results were in a good agreement with experimental ones obtained by means of hole‐drilling method. Finally, the residual stress distribution was superimposed to stress distribution because of fatigue loads obtained by FE analyses applying local concept, to calculate the stresses in the crack initiation zone and to understand the different types of failure that occurred in as‐welded and relieved specimens.  相似文献

Welded metallic joints are prone to fatigue damage, which may lead to sudden and catastrophic structural failure. In this research, fatigue failures of metallic structures with welded joints are analyzed using an approach based on automatic learning technology. A database of physics-based parameters, including material properties, loading histories, and stresses around potential cracking sites, is constructed based on experimental results and numerical analyses. Various automatic learning tools are used to search for the mathematical formulas and data patterns embedded in the database. The obtained rules and formulas can be used to support design of welded metallic structures. This approach provides a new way to locate fatigue-prone areas, predict fatigue lives, and may lead to designs of more fatigue resistant structures. It complements the classical deterministic and statistical fatigue failure predictions.  相似文献

Current procedures for evaluating fatigue strength of welded structures may not be consistent with the real fatigue behaviour of welded joints. A local strain method for the prediction of the WELded joints FAtigue REsistance (WELFARE), by local strain measurements at the weld toe, was recently proposed on the basis of fatigue tests on more than 10 series of welded joints (T, cruciform, angular and butt joints) in structural steel, with 10–25 mm main‐plate thickness. This paper reports fatigue test results obtained from 30 cruciform and butt welded joints (3–5 mm thick) under two load ratios (0.1 and ?1) in order to extend the applicability of the method to thin welded joints.  相似文献

Residual stresses due to the welding process in steel structures can significantly affect the fatigue behaviour. Usually, high tensile residual stresses up to the yield strength are conservatively assumed at the weld toes. This conservative assumption can result in misleading fatigue assessments. Areas with compressive residual stresses may be present in complex structures, where the details are less critical than predicted. This is shown in the paper by the example of fillet‐welded stiffener ends, where beneficial compressive residual stresses cause the initiation of fatigue cracks at other locations in less‐strained areas. Another example for the effects of residual stresses concerns the stress initiation and propagation at a structural detail under fully compressive load cycles. Fatigue cracks are possible here due to high tensile residual stress fields. The conclusion is that the welding‐induced residual stresses should be known in advance for a reliable fatigue assessment, which becomes possible to an increasing extent by numerical welding simulation.  相似文献

Influence of Ductility on the Multiaxial Fatigue Behaviour by the Example of Welded Joints of Steel and Aluminium The multiaxial fatigue behaviour of materials with different ductility under constant and changing principal stress directions is also applicable to welded joints of different materials. For this, welded flange tube connections of the fine grained steel StE 460 and the artificially aged aluminium alloy AlSi1MgMn T6 were investigated under constant amplitude combined bending and torsion. Out‐of‐phase loading, i. e. changing principal stress directions, of the steel joints led to a decrease of fatigue life, which is observed at ductile material states. However, for the aluminium joints out‐of‐phase loading resulted same behaviour as in‐phase loading, which indicates a semi‐ductile material behaviour. The results for the welded steel joints were evaluated on basis of local stresses by the integral hypothesis of the Effective Equivalent Stress EES (WVS). This hypothesis for ductile material states takes into account the life decreasing influence of out‐of‐phase loading by considering the interaction of the shear stresses on different planes. The fatigue behaviour of the aluminium welds is described by the critical plane based combination of shear and normal stresses (KoNoS), which is valid for semi‐ductile material states.  相似文献

Shipbuilding in blocks, as being usual on all larger shipyards, requires that the blocks will finally be welded together manually or semi‐automatically, that is, with butt‐welds in transverse direction that have to withstand relatively high dynamical loads. Modern shipbuilding aims at lightweight construction with thin plates that may have a plate thickness down to 4 mm. Previous investigations showed that manually produced butt‐welds in such thin structures did not reach the calculated fatigue life as required in the rules. Up to the present, this problem has not yet been solved, and it is questioned if all influence factors on the fatigue behaviour of real structures are correctly considered as no damage cases at butt joints that are known yet. In the investigation described here, results from small‐scale specimens tested with cyclic loads will be transferred to large components, considering the effects of recorded pre‐deformations induced by welding as well as measured differences in residual stresses between small‐scale specimens and large components, thus clarifying how far for instance a detrimental stress ratio should be taken into account by the rules for thin plates.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with an experimental and numerical study of the fatigue behaviour of tubular AlMgSi welded specimens subjected to biaxial loading. In‐phase torsion–bending fatigue tests under constant amplitude loading were performed in a standard servo‐hydraulic machine with a suitable gripping system. Some tests in pure rotating bending with and without steady torsion were also performed. The influence of stress ratio R and bending–torsion stress ratio were analysed. Correlation of the fatigue lives was done using the distortion energy hypothesis (DEH), based on the local stresses and strains. The applicability of the local strain approach method to the prediction of the fatigue life of the welded tubular specimens was also investigated. Static torsion has only a slight detrimental influence on fatigue strength. The DEH (von Mises criterion) based on local stresses in the weld toes was shown to satisfactorily correlate fatigue lives for in‐phase multiaxial stress–strain states. The stress–strain field intensity predictions were shown to have less scatter and are in better agreement with the experimental results than the equivalent strain energy density approach.  相似文献

This study attempts to predict the high cycle fatigue life of steel butt welds by numerical method. At first, FE simulation of plate butt welding is carried out to obtain the weld-induced residual stresses employing sequentially coupled three-dimensional (3-D) thermo-mechanical FE formulation. Then, a nonlinear damage cumulative model for multiaxial high cycle fatigue based on continuum damage mechanics (CDM), which can incorporate the effect of welding residual stresses, is derived using FE technique. The high cycle fatigue damage model is applied to the butt welds subjected to cyclic fatigue loading to calculate the fatigue life considering the residual stresses, and the computed total fatigue life which takes into account the fatigue crack initiation and the propagation is compared with the test result. In addition, the fatigue life prediction of the welds without considering the residual stresses is implemented to investigate the influence of welding residual stresses on the fatigue performance. The FE results show that the high cycle fatigue damage model proposed in this work can predict the fatigue life of steel butt welds with high accuracy, and welding residual stresses should be taken into account in assessing the fatigue life of the welds.  相似文献

Welded assemblies are commonly used in the shipbuilding industry. Because of the combination of stress concentration and cyclic loading, welded joints could be a critical area for fatigue damage. Thus, knowing stress and strain histories at the critical points of the structure is necessary, particularly when a confined plasticity occurs, to determine the fatigue life of welded assemblies. To avoid time‐consuming nonlinear finite element analyses (FEA), simplified estimation methods of the elastic–plastic strain/stress can be used. In a previous work, an approach to estimate stress state at critical points was developed and employed in the case of double‐notched specimens. The present paper focuses on welded joints in order to validate this strategy with the aim to estimate the fatigue crack initiation life of T‐joints. To go further, a parametric approach has been adopted to take into account the local geometries of welded joints and to determine the constraint operator without any FEA. The results predicted by this approach are compared with experimental fatigue results.  相似文献

Experimental fatigue data for butt‐welded joints in as‐welded condition and under constant amplitude tensile loading were analysed using the effective notch stress system and a new master curve analysis that takes the local stress ratio, Rlocal, into account. The local stresses needed for computation of Rlocal are calculated with the notch strain approach in conjunction with the reference radius concept. The main focus was to predict with the derived master curve the fatigue strength of peened butt‐welded joints. The lowest surface residual stresses after peening were first estimated based on reported measurements and an analytical lower bound result. The predictions showed quite similar strength dependences and FAT values as reported for high‐frequency mechanical impact treated welds for applied stress ratio R = 0.1. The benefits of peening reduce faster for higher strength steels when R increases. When R = 0.5, the FATs are practically the same for all steel grades.  相似文献

完成了单个冲击对1Cr18Ni91不锈钢管道焊接头试样低周疲劳寿命影响的试验研究。单个试验最大瞬时峰值应变率达480s^-1。试样未经消除焊接残余应力。采用成组法试验(每组7个试样),对称加载模式,总应变幅为0.00228。结果表明,冲击影响受到焊接残余应力和冲击塑性导入机制的耦合作用。焊接残余应力与冲击应力叠加将增加材料损伤,而冲击塑性导入将减缓疲劳损伤和降低疲劳寿命分散性。前者扼制后者。考虑疲  相似文献

In order to maintain structural integrity of welded structures, it is of great importance to evaluate the fitness for serviceability of the structural components, in which fatigue cracks are found during in-service inspections. Crack propagation paths are sometimes prerequisite for the proper estimation of fatigue crack propagation, because curved crack paths and sharp crack turning could occur at the intersections of structural members mainly due to stress biaxiality of repeated loads. In order to investigate this fatigue crack-growth behavior, fatigue crack-propagation tests and numerical simulation are carried out under various biaxial stress range ratios. Morphological mode transitions of fatigue failures are observed in experiments and also by computer simulation. Although simulated modes of failures are in fairly good agreement with the experimental results, discrepancies are sometimes observed for the crack-propagation lives. In order to investigate this problem, the welding residual stresses in the test specimens are measured, and the fatigue crack-propagation lives are quantitatively examined in terms of the combined effects of residual stress distribution and crack paths.  相似文献

Low‐cycle fatigue data of type 304 stainless steel obtained under axial‐torsional loading of variable amplitudes are analyzed using four multiaxial fatigue parameters: SWT, KBM, FS and LKN. Rainflow cycle counting and Morrow's plastic work interaction rule are used to calculate fatigue damage. The performance of a fatigue model is dependent on the fatigue parameter, the critical plane and the damage accumulation rule employed in the model. The conservatism and non‐conservatism of predicted lives are examined for some combinations of these variables. A new critical plane called the weight function‐critical plane is introduced for variable amplitude loading. This approach is found to improve the KBM‐based life predictions.  相似文献
