Cell performance and pressure drop were experimentally investigated for two commercial size 16 cm × 16 cm serpentine flow field proton exchange membrane fuel cells with Core 5621 and Core 57 membrane electrode assemblies at various cell temperatures and humidification temperatures. At cell temperature lower than the humidification temperature, the cell performance improved as the cell temperature increased, while reversely at cell temperature higher than the humidification temperature. At a specified cell temperature, increasing the cathode and/or anode humidification temperature improved the cell performance, and their effects weakened as cell temperature decreased. The effects of the cell and the humidification temperature on the pressure drops were closely related to the reactant feed mode. For the constant stoichiometric flow rate mode, both cathode and anode pressure drops increased as humidification temperature and average current density increased. For the constant mass flow rate mode, both cathode and anode pressure drops increased as humidification temperature increased, while anode pressure drops decreased and cathode pressure drops increased as average current density increased. The optimal cell performance occurred at cell temperature of 65 °C and humidification temperature of 70 °C. The effects of these operating parameters on the cell performance and pressure drop were analyzed based on the catalytic activity, membrane hydration, and cathode flooding.  相似文献

针对质子交换膜燃料电池(PEMFC)水管理开展了研究,建立了一维非等温两相流解析模型,研究了不同电流密度、微孔层接触角和不同加湿方案对电池内部水分布和温度分布的影响,提出了更好的进气加湿方案。结果表明:电流密度增大会导致阳极拖干、阴极水淹加剧,导致电池各部分温度上升。因各层材料亲水性不同,在交界面处能观察到液态水阶跃现象。增大微孔层接触角促进阴极液态水反扩散到阳极,一定程度上缓解阳极变干,但过大的接触角可能导致阴极水淹加剧。通过采取"阳极充分加湿、阴极低加湿"的进气加湿方案可以有效提高电池性能,并且能在一定程度改善电池内部受热,提高电池使用寿命。  相似文献

The performance of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is greatly affected by the operating parameters. Appropriate operating parameters are necessary for PEM fuel cells to maintain stable performance. A three-dimensional multi-phase fuel cell model (FCM) is developed to predict the effects of operating parameters (e.g. operating pressure, fuel cell temperature, relative humidity of reactant gases, and air stoichiometric ratio) on the performance of PEM fuel cells. The model presented in this paper is a typical nine-layer FCM that consists of current collectors, flow channels, gas diffusion layers, catalysts layers at the anode and the cathode as well as the membrane. A commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software package Fluent is used to solve this predictive model through SIMPLE algorithm and the modeling results are illustrated via polarization curves including I–V and I–P curves. The results indicate that the cell performance can be enhanced by increasing operating pressure and operating temperature. The anode humidification has more significant influences on the cell performance than the cathode humidification, and the best performance occurs at moderate air relative humidity while the hydrogen is fully humidified. In addition, the cell performance proves to be improved with the increase of air stoichiometric ratio. Based on these conclusions, several suggestions for engineering practice are also provided.  相似文献

It is well known that water plays a very important role in the performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Non-uniform water content in the membrane leads to non-uniform ionic resistance, and non-uniform liquid water fraction in the porous electrode causes varied mass transfer resistances. The objective of this work is to study the effects of different anode and cathode humidification temperatures on local current densities of a PEM fuel cell with a co-flow serpentine flow field. The method used is the current distribution measurement gasket technique [H. Sun, G.S. Zhang, L.J. Guo, H. Liu, J. Power Sources 158 (2006) 326–332]. The experimental results show that both air and the hydrogen need to be humidified to ensure optimal cell performance, and too high or too low humidification temperature can cause severe non-uniform distribution of local current density. From the experimental results of local current density distributions, the local membrane hydration, the optimal humidification temperature, and if flooding occurs can be obtained. Such detailed local measurement results could be very valuable in fuel cell design and operation optimizations.  相似文献

This study determines the optimum operating parameters for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack to obtain small variation and maximum electric power output using a robust parameter design (RPD). The operating parameters examined experimentally are operating temperatures, operating pressures, anode/cathode humidification temperatures, and reactant flow rates. First, the dynamic Taguchi method is used to obtain the maximum and stable power density against the different current densities, which are regarded as the systemic inputs considered a signal factor. The relationship between control factors and responses in the PEMFC stack is determined using a neural network. The discrete parameter levels in the dynamic Taguchi method can be divided into desired levels to acquire real optimum operating parameters. Based on these investigations, the PEMFC stack is operated at the current densities of 0.4–0.8 A/cm2. Since the voltage shift is quite small (roughly 0.73–0.83 V for each single cell), the efficiency would be higher. In the range of operation, the operating pressure, the cathode humidification temperature and the interactions between operating temperature and operating pressure significantly impact PEMFC stack performance. As the operating pressure increasing, the increments of the electric power decrease, and power stability is enhanced because the variation in responses is reduced.  相似文献

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance depends on different fuel cell operating temperatures, humidification temperatures, operating pressures, flow rates, and various combinations of these parameters. This study employed the method of the design of experiments (DOE) to obtain the optimal combination of the six primary operating parameters (fuel cell operating temperatures, operating pressures, anode and cathode humidification temperatures, anode and cathode stoichiometric flow ratios). In the first stage, this study adopted a 2k−2 fractional factorial design of the DOE to determine whether these factors have significant effects on a response and the interactions between various parameters. Second, the L27(313) orthogonal array of the Taguchi method is utilized to determine the optimal combination of factors for a fuel cell. Based on this study, the operating pressure, the operating temperature, and the interactions between operating temperature and operating pressure have a significant effect on the fuel cell performance. Among them, the operating pressure is the most important contributor. When the operating pressure increases, it should simultaneously lower the effects of other factors. While both the operating temperature and pressure increase simultaneously with that, the other factors are at appropriate conditions, it is possible to improve the fuel cell performance.  相似文献

The operating and designing parameters have significant influences on the performance of an air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cell. Figuring out the parameter sensitivity helps select the appropriate operating point and the geometry size for a fuel cell. In this paper, parameter sensitivity analysis is conducted for the performance and the internal transport phenomena of an air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cell based on different air stoichiometries, air relative humidities and air flow field designs. The numerical results show that large air stoichiometry helps lower the single cell temperature, keeps the membrane better hydrated, and improves cell performance. Especially, the fluctuation of water content always exists periodically for the case of different air stoichiometry, where the minimum value of water content appears underneath the cathode channel in contrast to the maximum value appearing underneath the cathode rib. Furthermore, the maximum periodic fluctuation amplitude of water content is even more than 8 for the case of air stoichiometry of 150. The water flooding phenomenon becomes severe with the increase of air stoichiometry. Air with larger relative humidity also increases the single cell performance by improving the hydration of the membrane. However, water flooding becomes worse with the increment of air relative humidity. The narrower channel design for the cathode flow field not only leads to a more uniform current density distribution but also keeps the membrane better hydrated and thus enhances the cell performance.  相似文献

This study investigates the effects of the relative humidity (RH) of the reactants on the cell performance and local transport phenomena in proton exchange membrane fuel cells with parallel and interdigitated flow fields. A three-dimensional model was developed taking into account the effect of the liquid water formation on the reactant transport. The results indicate that the reactant RH and the flow field design all significantly affect cell performance. For the same operating conditions and reactant RH, the interdigitated design has better cell performance than the parallel design. With a constant anode RH = 100%, for lower operating voltages, a lower cathode RH reduces cathode flooding and improves cell performance, while for higher operating voltages, a higher cathode RH maintains the membrane hydration to give better cell performance. With a constant cathode RH = 100%, for lower operating voltages, a lower anode RH not only provides more hydrogen to the catalyst layer to participate in the electrochemical reaction, but also increases the difference in the water concentrations between the anode and cathode, which enhances back-diffusion of water from the cathode to the anode, thus reducing cathode flooding to give better performance. However, for higher operating voltages, the cell performance is not dependent on the anode RH.  相似文献

The effect of relative humidity of the cathode (RHC) on proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells has been studied focusing on automotive operation. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed on a 300-cm2 serpentine flow-field configuration at various RHC levels. The dependency of current density, membrane water contents, net water flux on the performance and the uniformity was investigated. The uniformity of current density and temperature was evaluated by employing standard deviation. The water balance inside a fuel cell was examined by describing electro-osmotic drag and back diffusion. It was concluded that the RHC has strong effect on the cell performance and uniformity. The dry RHC showed low cell voltage and non-uniform distributions of current density and temperature, whereas high RHC presented increased cell performance and uniform distributions of current density and temperature with well-hydrated membrane electrode assembly (MEA). Also the local current density distribution was strongly dependent on the local membrane water contents distribution that has complex phenomena of water transport. The elimination of external humidifier is desirable for the automotive operation, but it could degrade cell performance and durability due to dehydration of the MEA. Therefore a proper humidification of the reactant is necessary.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the effects of thermodynamic irreversibilities on the exergetic performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells as a function of cell operating temperature, pressures of anode and cathode, current density, and membrane thickness. The practical operating conditions are selected to be 3–5 atm for anode and cathode pressures, and 323–353 K for the cell temperatures, respectively. In addition, the membrane thicknesses are chosen as 0.016, 0.018 and 0.02 cm, respectively. Moreover, the current density range of the PEM fuel cell is selected to be 0.01–2.0 A cm?2. It is concluded that exergy efficiency of PEM fuel cell decreases with a rise in membrane thickness and current density, and increases with a rise of cell operating pressure and with a decrease of current density for the same membrane thickness. Thus, it can be said that, in order to increase the exergetic performance of PEM fuel cell, the lower membrane thickness, the lower current density and the higher cell operating pressure should be selected in case PEM fuel cell is operated at constant cell temperature. In this work, the influences of various operating conditions including cathode inlet gas flow rate, cathode inlet humidification temperature, cell temperature, etc. on the performance of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells with conventional flow field and interdigitated flow field are experimentally studied. Experimental results show that the cell performance is enhanced with increases in cathode inlet gas flow rate, cathode humidification temperature and cell temperature. However, as cell temperature is higher than or equal to anode humidification temperature, the cell performance is deteriorated due to failure in humidification of the cell. Comparison between interdigitated flow field and conventional flow field shows that the former provides higher cell performance and remarkably reduces fuel consumption for efficient diffusion of the fuel gas to the diffuser layer. As air is used as the cathode inlet gas, PEM fuel cell with interdigitated flow field can obtain preferable limiting current density, and the optimal power is about 1.4 times as that of the cells with conventional flow field. Rib and shoulder areas are more advantageous to electrochemical reaction in interdigitated flow field; hence a large flow field area ratio degrades the better performance area and thus the cell performance. But too small flow field area ratio also deteriorates the cell performance due to the decrease in effective reaction area. Theoretically, the flow field area has an optimum value, i.e., 50.75% in this work, providing higher performance than 66.67%.  相似文献

In a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) water management is one of the critical issues to be addressed. Although the membrane requires humidification for high proton conductivity, water in excess decreases the cell performance by flooding. In this paper an improved strategy for water management in a fuel cell operating with low water content is proposed using a parallel serpentine-baffle flow field plate (PSBFFP) design compared to the parallel serpentine flow field plate (PSFFP). The water management in a fuel cell is closely connected to the temperature control in the fuel cell and gases humidifier. The PSBFFP and the PSFFP were evaluated comparatively under three different humidity conditions and their influence on the PEMFC prototype performance was monitored by determining the current density–voltage and current density–power curves. Under low humidification conditions the PEMFC prototype presented better performance when fitted with the PSBFFP since it retains water in the flow field channels.  相似文献

Commercial sized (16 × 16 cm2 active surface area) proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells with serpentine flow chambers are fabricated. The GORE-TEX® PRIMEA 5621 was used with a 35-μm-thick PEM with an anode catalyst layer with 0.45 mg cm−2 Pt and cathode catalyst layer with 0.6 mg cm−2 Pt and Ru or GORE-TEX® PRIMEA 57 was used with an 18-μm-thick PEM with an anode catalyst layer at 0.2 mg cm−2 Pt and cathode catalyst layer at 0.4 mg cm−2 of Pt and Ru. At the specified cell and humidification temperatures, the thin PRIMEA 57 membrane yields better cell performance than the thick PRIMEA 5621 membrane, since hydration of the former is more easily maintained with the limited amount of produced water. Sufficient humidification at both the cathode and anode sides is essential to achieve high cell performance with a thick membrane, like the PRIMEA 5621. The optimal cell temperature to produce the best cell performance with PRIMEA 5621 is close to the humidification temperature. For PRIMEA 57, however, optimal cell temperature exceeds the humidification temperature.  相似文献

This study has applied the L18 2 × 37 orthogonal array of the Taguchi method to determine the optimal combination of six primary operating parameters (flow orientation, temperature of fuel cell, anode and cathode humidification temperatures, anode, and cathode stoichiometric flow ratios) of a PEM fuel cell. The optimal combination factor is co-flow, a cell temperature of 333 K, an anode humidification temperature of 353 K, a cathode humidification temperature of 333 K, a stoichiometric flow ratio for hydrogen of 2, and a stoichiometric flow ratio for oxygen of 3; and the amount of maximum power is 17.61 W. The results for the experiment indicate that flow orientation, temperature of fuel cell, and anode and cathode humidification temperatures are significant factors for affecting the performance. Furthermore, this study simulates the transport phenomenon and electrochemical reactions using a finite-element method at the optimal combination factor from the experimental results of Taguchi method.  相似文献

Alkaline anion exchange membrane (AAEM) fuel cell is becoming more attractive because of its outstanding merits, such as fast electrochemical kinetics and low dependence on non-precious catalyst. In this study, a three-dimensional multiphase non-isothermal AAEM fuel cell model is developed. The modeling results show that the performance is improved with more anode humidification, but the improvement becomes less significant at higher humidification levels. The humidification level of anode can change the water removal mechanisms: at partial humidification, water is removed as vapor; and for full humidification, water is removed as liquid. Cathode humidification is even more critical than anode. Liquid water supply in cathode has a positive effect on performance, especially at high current densities. With more liquid water supply in cathode, liquid water starts moving from channel to CL, rather than being removed from CL. Liquid water supply in cathode is needed to balance the water amounts in anode and cathode. Decreasing the membrane thickness generally improves the cell performance, and the improvement is even enhanced with thinner membranes, due to the faster water diffusion between anode and cathode, which reduces the mass transport losses.  相似文献

Despite serious methanol crossover issues in Direct Methanol Fuel Cells (DMFCs), the use of high-concentration methanol fuel is highly demanded to improve the energy density of passive fuel DMFC systems for portable applications. In this paper, the effects of a hydrophobic anode micro-porous layer (MPL) and cathode air humidification are experimentally studied as a function of the methanol-feed concentration. It is found in polarization tests that the anode MPL dramatically influences cell performance, positively under high-concentration methanol-feed but negatively under low-concentration methanol-feed, which indicates that methanol transport in the anode is considerably altered by the presence of the anode MPL. In addition, the experimental data show that cathode air humidification has a beneficial effect on cell performance due to the enhanced backflow of water from the cathode to the anode and the subsequent dilution of the methanol concentration in the anode catalyst layer. Using an advanced membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with the anode MPL and cathode air humidification, we report that the maximum power density of 78 mW/cm2 is achieved at a methanol-feed concentration of 8 M and cell operating temperature of 60 °C. This paper illustrates that the anode MPL and cathode air humidification are key factors to successfully operate a DMFC with high-concentration methanol fuel.  相似文献

This study proposes a novel parameter optimization method, capable of integrating the neural network and the Taguchi method for parametric analysis of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance. Numerous parameters affecting the PEMFC performance are analyzed, such as fuel cell operating temperatures, cathode and anode humidification temperatures, operating pressures, and reactant flow rate. In the traditional design of experiments, the Taguchi method has been popularly utilized in engineering. However, the parameter levels selected to form the orthogonal array in the Taguchi method are discrete, preventing the estimation of the real optimum. This study used the Taguchi method to acquire the primary optimums of the operating parameters in the PEMFC. Each row in the orthogonal array together with its relative responses was used to establish a set of training patterns (input/target pair) to the neural network. The neural network can then construct relationships between the control factors and responses in the PEMFC. The actual optimums of the operating parameters in the PEMFC were obtained by the trained neural network. Experimental results are presented for identifying the proposed approach, which is useful in improving performance for PEMFC and developing electrical system on advanced vehicles and ships.  相似文献

The flow field optimization design is one of the important methods to improve the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this study, a new structure with staggered blocks on the parallel flow channels of PEMFC and auxiliary flow channels under the ribs is proposed. Through numerical calculation method, the effect of blocks auxiliary flow field (BAFF) on pressure drop, reactant distribution and liquid water removal in the fuel cells are investigated. The results show that when the operating voltage is 0.5 V, the current density of BAFF is 21.74% higher than that of the straight parallel flow field (SPFF), and the power density reaches 0.65 W cm?2. BAFF improves performance by equalizing the pressure drop across sub-channels, promoting the uniform distribution of reactant, and enhancing transport across the ribs. In addition, through parameter analysis, it is found that BAFF can discharge liquid water in time at the conditions of high humidification, high current density and low temperature, which ensures the output performance of the fuel cell and improves the durability of the fuel cell. This paper provides new ideas for the improvement of PEMFC flow field design, which is beneficial to the development of PEMFC with high current density.  相似文献

The relationship between thickness of the proton exchange membrane and cell performance was measured. Use of cells with thinner membrane resulted in an apparent reduction in the volume of water transferred from the anode to the cathode, offering stable cell performance even under conditions of low-humid reaction gas supplied. Internal humidification, with its constant feeding of sufficient water to the anode, was found to provide an equivalent of the external humidification process, without needing humid air. On the basis of these findings, a fuel cell module was assembled featuring newly designed gas separators to feed water directly to the fuel flow field in the cells. The fuel cell module was then submitted to module performance testing under a broad spectrum of operating conditions and it demonstrated performance stability against load variations from startups at room temperature to operations under the rated load.  相似文献
