An attempt has been made to characterize high-cycle fatigue behaviour of high-strength spring steel wire by means of an ultrasonic fatigue test and analytical techniques. Two kinds of induction-tempered ultra-high-strength spring steel wire of 6.5 mm in diameter with a tensile strength of 1800 MPa were used in this investigation.
The fatigue strength of the steel wires between 106 and 109 cycles was determined at a load ratio R = −1. The experimental results show that fatigue rupture can occur beyond 107 cycles. For Cr–V spring wire, the stress–life ( S – N ) curve becomes horizontal at a maximum stress of 800 MPa after 106 cycles, but the S – N curve of the Cr–Si steel continues to drop at a high number of cycles (>106 cycles) and does not exhibit a fatigue limit, which is more correctly described by a fatigue strength at a given number of cycles. By using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the crack initiation and propagation behaviour have been examined. Experimental and analytical techniques were developed to better understand and predict high-cycle fatigue life in terms of crack initiation and propagation. The results show that the portion of fatigue life attributed to crack initiation is more than 90% in the high-cycle regime for the steels studied in this investigation.  相似文献

Fatigue life, initiation and propagation of cracks at 800 °C in a cast Ni-base superalloy IN 713LC were experimentally studied in high-cycle fatigue region. Load symmetrical cycling and cycling with high tensile mean load were applied. Both crystallographic crack initiation resulting in long Stage I crack growth and non-crystallographic Stage II propagation were observed. High scatter of fatigue life data was explained by: (i) variability in microstructural conditions for crystallographic crack initiation and propagation and by (ii) influence of casting defect size distribution. The fractographic observation supports the slip band decohesion mechanism of crack initiation and an important role of cyclic slip localization in persistent slip bands.  相似文献

In the high-cycle fatigue regime, it is assumed that crack initiation mechanisms and short fatigue crack propagation processes govern fatigue life of a component. Moreover, it is now becoming accepted that the conventional fatigue limit does not imply complete reversibility of plastic strain and is connected to crack initiation. However, interaction of the crack tip with microstructural barriers, such as, e.g. grain boundaries or second phases, leads to a decrease and eventually to a stop in the crack propagation. In the present contribution, examples for propagating and non-propagating conditions of short fatigue cracks in the microstructure of a duplex steel are given, quantified by means of automated EBSD. To classify the results within the scope of predicting the service life for HCF- and VHCF-loading conditions, a numerical model based on the boundary element method has been developed, describing crack propagation by means of partially irreversible dislocation glide on crystallographic slip planes in a polycrystalline model microstructure (Voronoi cells). This concept is capable to account for the strong scattering in fatigue life for very small strain amplitudes and to contribute to the concept of tailored microstructures for improved cyclic-loading behaviour.  相似文献

Surface replication method was utilized to monitor the small fatigue crack initiation and growth process of single‐edge‐notch tension specimens fabricated by nickel base superalloy GH4169. Three different stress levels were selected. Results showed that small fatigue cracks of nickel base superalloy GH4169 initiated from grain boundaries or surface inclusions. The small fatigue crack initiation and growth stages took up about 80–90% of the total fatigue life. Multiple major cracks were observed in the notch root, and specimen with more major cracks seemed to have smaller fatigue life under the same test conditions. At the early growth stage, small crack behaviour might be strongly influenced by microstructures; thus, the crack growth rates had high fluctuations. However, the stress level effect on the small fatigue crack growth rates was not distinguishable for the three different stress levels. And no clear differences were found among the crack initiation lives by using replication technique.  相似文献

High-cycle fatigue features of over 108 cycles, particularly the initiation and propagation of edge delamination considering the effects of transverse cracks, were investigated using quasi-isotropic carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates with a stacking sequence of [45/0/−45/90]s in this study. In the relationship between a transverse crack density and initiation and growth of edge delamination, it was found that fatigue damage growth behavior varied depending on applied stress. It was observed that edge delamination initiated and grew at parts where transverse cracks were dense at ordinary applied stress, whereas it was observed that edge delamination grew before or simultaneously with transverse crack propagation at a low applied stress and high-cycle loading. In addition, the critical transverse crack density where delamination begins growing was calculated to evaluate the interaction between transverse crack and edge delamination growth.  相似文献

Local strain at the notch-root and its effect on fatigue crack initiation was investigated in four metals by the real-time, fine-grid method. Special attention was focused on local notch-root strain behaviour until crack initiation. From the application of strain hysteresis at the notch root, the maximum strain under loading conditions during each cycle was investigated in detail. One of the main results was that the maximum strain value at the first cycle of the fatigue test coincided with that at crack initiation. Maximum strain defined from the cyclic strain changes at the notch root was proposed as one possible parameter for estimating fatigue crack initiation life. Based on the curvilinear relationship between maximum strain and number of cycles to crack initiation, a new life evaluation method for fatigue crack initiation is proposed. This approach differs fundamentally from the usual fracture mechanics method based on the stress intensity factor.  相似文献

Nowadays cast iron components are widely used in highly stressed structures. Component lifetime is strongly influenced by inhomogeneities caused by the material's microstructure and the manufacturing process (graphite particles, (micro‐)shrinkage pores, inclusions). Inhomogeneities often act as a fatigue crack starter. Lifetime until failure may be divided into stages for crack initiation, short and long crack growth. Initiation of a crack of technical size (a ≈ 1mm) is often dominated by the growth of short cracks. The paper presents an approach to analyse the mechanically short fatigue crack growth based on elastic‐plastic fracture mechanics considering the closure behaviour of short cracks. The effective J‐integral range is used as a crack driving force. Finite element analysis results as well as analytical solutions to approximate the crack driving force are presented. The application of the approach is successfully demonstrated for cast iron material EN‐GJS‐400‐18‐LT using data from fatigue tests, microstructure and fracture surface analyses to assess the fatigue life.  相似文献

Fatigue notch factor and short crack propagation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper addresses the problem of high cycle fatigue at notches and the role of short crack propagation in the fatigue notch factor kf. Ahead of a V-notched feature, the stress field is characterized by two parameters, i.e. the stress concentration factor kt and the normalized notch stress intensity factor kn. Whether fatigue strength at a given life is controlled by crack initiation (kf = kt) or by short crack propagation (kf < kt) depends on kt, kn and the material resistances to crack initiation and to short crack propagation. The analysis accounts for the effects of notch acuity, notch size, material and fatigue life on the fatigue notch factor kf. It opens the door to a new method for predicting fatigue life using two S-N curves for a given material; one being measured from a smooth specimen, the other from a severe V-notch.  相似文献

The concept of damage tolerance is now largely employed to evaluate the fatigue life of structures. However, part of this fatigue relies on the initiation and growth of small cracks. The fatigue behaviour of a naval structural steel (S355NL) was investigated. In order to characterize the behaviour of short and long cracks, tests were performed under constant amplitude loading for several load ratios between –1.0 and 0.5. A major part of fatigue life is constituted by short crack initiation and propagation.  相似文献

Fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviours were studied based on the dynamic response simulation by the three‐dimensional finite‐element analysis (FEA) and dynamic response experiments for tensile‐shear spot‐welded joints. The entire fatigue propagation behaviour from the surface elliptical cracks at the initiation stage to the through thickness cracks at the final stage was taken into consideration during the three‐dimensional FEA dynamic response simulations. The results of the simulations and experiments found that the fatigue cracks of spot‐welded joint from initial detectable crack sizes to crack propagation behaviour could be described by three stages. Approximately one‐half of the total fatigue life was taken in stage I, which includes micro‐crack nucleation and the small crack growth process; 20% of the total fatigue life in stage II, in which the existing surface crack propagates through the thickness of sheet and 30% of the total fatigue life in stage III, during which the through thickness crack propagates along the direction of plate width to the final failure. According to the relationship between the crack length and depth and the dynamic response frequency during the simulated fatigue damage process, the definition of fatigue crack initiation and propagation stages was proposed. The analysis will provide some information for the fatigue life prediction of the spot‐welded structures.  相似文献

This work presents a new ultrasonic fatigue testing device for studying the initiation and propagation mechanisms of internal microstructurally short fatigue cracks using in situ synchrotron tomography. Its principle is described as well as the method used for automatically detecting crack initiation and its subsequent growth. To promote internal crack initiation, specimens containing internal casting defects were tested between the high cycle and very high cycle fatigue regimes (107‐109 cycles). Preliminary results show the ability of this new device to initiate an internal microstructurally short crack in a reasonable testing time and monitor its growth.  相似文献

An investigation was carried out to examine the influence of austempering heat treatments and the resultant microstructure of austempered ductile cast iron, on the fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue threshold, and high-cycle fatigue strength of the material. Two different approaches were used to study the fatigue behavior of this relatively new material, that is, a traditional S-N curve approach for determination of fatigue strength and a fracture mechanics-based approach for determination of the fatigue threshold. Compact tension and cylindrical specimens prepared from alloyed nodular ductile cast iron were given three different austempering heat treatments to produce three different microstructures. The fatigue threshold and high-cycle fatigue behavior of these specimens were studied in room temperature ambient atmosphere. The results of the present investigation demonstrate that the fatigue threshold of the material increases with increase in volume fraction of carbon-saturated austenite. The fatigue strength of the material, on the other hand, was found to increase with decrease in austenitic grain size. The crack growth process in the material was a combination of ductile striations and microvoid coalescence, and crack propagation by connecting the graphite nodules along its path.  相似文献

Fatigue life predictions for notched members are made using local strain and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics concepts. Crack growth from notches is characterized by J-integral estimates made for short and long cracks. The local notch strain field is determined by notch geometry, applied stress level and material properties. Crack initiation is defined as a crack of the same size as the local notch strain field. Crack initiation life is obtained from smooth specimens as the life to initiate a crack equal to the size of cracks in the notched member. Notch plasticity effects are included in analyzing the crack propagation phase. Crack propagation life is determined by integrating the equation that relates crack growth rate to ΔJ from the initiated to final crack size. Total fatigue life estimates are made by combining crack initiation and crack propagation phases. These agree within a factor of 1.5 with measured lives for the two notch geometries.  相似文献

This study evaluates the influence of residual stresses induced by the fabrication of surface anomalies on the fatigue crack growth in a nickel based superalloy. To separate the notch effect of the geometry from the residual stress field induced by fabrication of the surface flaws, two V-type anomalies are considered: scratches and dents with equivalent morphology and size. A specially designed heat treatment has been used to reduce the magnitude of residual stresses around these anomalies in order to highlight their effects on the different stages of the crack propagation, under low cycle fatigue conditions at 400 °C. The crack initiation life is short for both anomalies but in the presence of compressive residual stresses, a decrease of the fatigue crack growth rate has been observed during the first stages of the crack propagation. Furthermore, the results showed that without residual stresses, scratches and dents exhibit the same behaviour. Thus, the residual stress field below surface anomalies is the main parameter controlling the fatigue life from surface anomalies.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effects of stress concentration on low cycle fatigue properties and fracture behaviour of a nickel‐based powder metallurgy superalloy, FGH97, at elevated temperature, the low cycle fatigue tests have been conducted with semi‐circular and semi‐elliptical single‐edge notched plate specimens at 550 and 700 °C. The results show that the fatigue life of the notched specimen decreases with the increase of stress concentration factor and the fatigue crack initiation life evidently decreases because of the defect located in the stress concentration zone. Moreover, the plastic deformation induced by notch stress concentration affects the initial crack occurrence zone. The angle α of the crack occurrence zone is within ±10° of notch bisector for semi‐circular notched specimens and ±20° for semi‐elliptical notched specimens. The crack propagation rate decreases to a minimum at a certain length, D, and then increases with the growth of the crack. The crack propagation rate of the semi‐elliptical notched specimen decelerates at a faster rate than that of the semi‐circular notched specimen because of the increase of the notch plasticity gradient. The crack length, D, is affected by both the applied load and the notch plasticity gradient. In addition, the fracture mechanism is shown to transition from transgranular to intergranular as temperature increases from 550 to 700 °C, which would accelerate crack propagation and reduce the fatigue life.  相似文献

In order to improve thermal fatigue resistance of cast iron and further study the effects of graphite shape on it, samples with different graphite shapes were processed by laser to create a biomimetic non-smooth surface. The results indicated that laser processed zone caused the longer crack initiation life and the slower crack propagation rate, which endowed biomimetic non-smooth surface with a beneficial effect on improving thermal fatigue behavior of iron with flake, vermiform or nodular graphite. Thermal fatigue resistance of samples with the same kind of surface (smooth or non-smooth) all were sorted as nodular graphite iron > vermicular graphite iron > flake graphite iron.  相似文献

In this paper, fatigue life prediction of U‐notched polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) plate is numerically investigated based on the combination of fatigue damage mechanism and fatigue crack propagation mechanism. First, strength and stiffness degeneration criterions during the fatigue process are established on the basis of nonlinear progressive damage evolution, and the fatigue crack initiation life is estimated. Second, fatigue crack propagation phase is analysed through virtual crack closure technique. The fatigue crack propagation life before totally fracture is also predicted. Finally, finite element models of PMMA plate weakened by lateral symmetric U‐notch are built up using ABAQUS, and the total fatigue life of notched plate is calculated by combining the crack initiation life with the crack propagation life. These results will play an important role for evaluating the fatigue life of U‐notched PMMA plate.  相似文献

The fatigue behaviour of a 2009/SiC/15p‐T4 DRA composite has been examined in the very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) regime where 107Nf≤ 109 cycles. Ultrasonic fatigue was used to achieve the very high cycle counts. Careful processing yielded a composite with a very homogeneous particle distribution with minimal clustering. Fatigue crack initiation was observed almost exclusively at AlCuFe inclusions with no crack initiation observed at SiC particle clusters. Fatigue lives at a given stress level exhibited minimal scatter and subsurface crack initiation was observed in all cases. This behaviour is consistent with the presence of a low number density of critical inclusions that are responsible for crack initiation very early in fatigue life.  相似文献

In this paper, the small fatigue crack behavior of titanium alloy TC4 at different stress ratios was investigated. Single‐edge‐notch tension specimens were fatigued axially under a nominal maximum stress of 370 MPa at room temperature. Results indicate that fatigue cracks in TC4 initiate from the interface between α and β phases or within α phase. More than 90% of the total fatigue life is consumed in the small crack initiation and growth stages. The crack growth process of TC4 can be divided into three typical stages, ie, microstructurally small crack stage, physically small crack stage, and long crack stage. Although the stress ratio has a significant effect on the total fatigue life and crack initiation life at constant σmax, its effect on crack growth rate is indistinguishable at R = ?0.1, 0.1, and 0.3 when crack growth rate is plotted as a function of ?K.  相似文献

Improvement in Fatigue Properties by Means of Deep Rolling Deep rolling has an almost 60 years old tradition and today it is an important process especially for automobile structural parts. The development of deep rolling was greatly influenced by the Institute of Material Science of the Technical University in Darmstadt. After a short historical review the general mechanism of mechanical strengthening is discussed. Then new experimental results on ductile cast irons and a case hardened steel are given. The improvement in fatigue strength of notched specimens out of these materials is even higher than that observed on steel in previous investigations. However the experiments also indicate that mechanical strengthened parts obviously have no real fatigue limit. Measurements of crack propagation on nodular cast iron specimens show that the propagation rate of cracks in the notch root is extremely reduced by compressive residual stresses. However no real crack arrest could be observed.  相似文献
