A collaborative approach to standards, practices. Setting the stage for continuous quality improvement

In retrospect, the most important thing we did was work together. We analyzed, refined, and validated our philosophical approach to patient care. We provided an information data base that is readily available for on-the-job reference and serves as a starting point for CQI activities. The very act of joint documentation of practices encourages open discussions about improvements to patient care. One physician states, We know that flaws in the process through which we produce care are everywhere--waste, duplication of effort, unnecessary complexity, and unpredictability . . . I believe that modern total quality management offers enormous hope to a medical care field that is rather desperate. . . . Collaborative practice and CQI activities are one hope. The scope of what nurses and physicians traditionally consider when discussing standards and practices must widen. We should no longer look only at patient care. We must simultaneously focus on how the management of total systems influences quality care for all patients. The CQI process, a proactive method, requires an accurate data base of information that is easily retrieved when looking for systems and individual patient care improvements. Our Computerized Collaborative Standards and Practices Manual is the reservoir for documenting practice plans developed and approved by all the disciplines involved. The process described here began with two closely knit operating room disciplines; this framework, however, offers the potential for expansion into a hospital-wide system of information organization and use.

This paper describes some trends in the development of corporate concentration in the gold mining industry in the Western world. The main source of information is a data base on corporate control of the production of non-fuel minerals, which has been established by the Raw Materials Group in Sweden. The data base contains data on production, ownership and management of about 1000 companies engaged in the non-fuel minerals industry in the Western world. Reference years arc 1975 and 1984. The data base is updated continuously.

Development of a Web-GIS Based Geotechnical Information System

The construction industry benefits greatly if all the existing three-dimensional (3D) geotechnical subsurface information of a city/country can be accessed at any time using the Internet. The geographic information system (GIS) is well suited for such problems; however, GIS was originally developed for two-dimensional planes. Recently, some 3D capabilities for GIS have been developed, but these capabilities in their present form alone are not suitable for storing and presenting three-dimensional geotechnical data. One way to overcome the limitation of data storage is integration of GIS with a relational database management system (RDBMS). A Web-based geotechnical information system that can perform online spatial queries, generation of professional borelogs, and various geotechnical analyses was developed. The system has been developed as a national geotechnical information system (GeoInfoSys) for Singapore. The system provides easy-to-use functions to: (1) locate and purchase boreholes of interest; (2) view borelogs and cross sections that are generated online; (3) provide downloadable data in a standard format for downstream analysis; and (4) perform geotechnical queries using a geotechnical search engine (GSE). The geotechnical information was stored in a digital format rather than as static images; this provides many opportunities to explore the data, and these opportunities are discussed herein.
