In this paper, we study the applicability of multicast congestion control over universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS) networks. We analyze two well‐known multicast congestion control schemes for fixed networks, namely TCP‐friendly multicast congestion control and pragmatic general multicast congestion control. We investigate their behavior when they are employed in UMTS networks and we analyze the problems arose when these mechanisms are applied over the wireless links of the UMTS terrestrial radio‐access network. Additionally, we propose necessary improvements to these legacy schemes and explain the necessity of these modifications. The proposed schemes are implemented in the ns‐2 network simulator and are evaluated under various network conditions and topologies. Finally, we measure the performance of the proposed modified schemes and compare them with the corresponding legacy mechanisms. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We propose a hybrid coupling scheme to support interworking between UMTS and WLAN networks. Under the Tight-coupled system, it is expected that WLAN users can also use UMTS services with guaranteed QoS and seamless mobility. However, the interworking is problematic. The capacity of UMTS core network nodes cannot accommodate the bulky data traffic from WLAN, since the core network nodes are designed to handle the small-sized data of circuit voice calls or short packets. The proposed coupling scheme differentiates the data paths according to the type of the traffic and can accommodate traffic from WLAN efficiently, with guaranteed QoS and seamless mobility. We compare the handover procedures of the proposed coupling strategy with those of the loose and tight coupled schemes. In addition, we analyze the delay based on signaling costs during vertical handover. It is shown that the handover latency decreases when the UMTS and WLAN are coupled in the proposed way.  相似文献

The Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) provides users variable data rate services, which adopts wide-band code-division multiple-access (WCDMA) as the radio access technology. In WCDMA, orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) codes are assigned to different users to preserve the orthogonality between users' physical channels. The data rate supported by an OVSF code depends on its spreading factor (SF). An OVSF code with smaller SF can support higher data rate services than that with larger SFs. Randomly assigning the OVSF code with a large SF to a user may preclude a larger number of OVSF codes with small SFs, which may cause lots of high data rate call requests to be blocked. Therefore the OVSF code assignment affects the performance of the UMTS network significantly. In this paper, we propose two OVSF code assignment schemes CADPB1 and CADPB2 for UMTS. Both schemes are simple and with low system overhead. The simulation experiments are conducted to evaluate the performances for our schemes. Our study indicates that our proposed schemes outperform previously proposed schemes in terms of the weighted blocking probability and fairness index. Our schemes improve the call acceptance rate by slightly introducing call waiting time.  相似文献

In recent years, Cellular wireless technologies like GPRS, UMTS, CDMA and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technologies like IEEE 802.11 have seen a quantum leap in their growth. Cellular technologies can provide data services over a wide area, but with lower data rates. WLAN technologies offer higher data rates, but over smaller areas, popularly known as ‘Hot Spots’. The demand for an ubiquitous data service can be fulfilled, if it is possible for the end-user to seamlessly roam between these heterogeneous technologies. In this paper, a novel framework is proposed consisting of intra-ISP network called ‘Intermediate Switching Network’(ISN) fused between UMTS and WLAN networks as well as data (Internet) services for providing seamless mobility without affecting user’s activities. The ISN uses MPLS and Multiprotocol-BGP to switch the data traffic between UMTS to IEEE 802.11 networks, as per the movements of the user. The ISN is integrated with the UMTS network at the GGSN-3G and at the Access Point for IEEE 802.11 network respectively. The simulation result shows the improved performance of the ISN based framework over existing schemes.  相似文献

In Beyond Third Generation (B3G) wireless communications, multiple overlays of wireless access networks may cooperate to allow a user access to novel services, the future demands of which will significantly increase the load on location management systems within the networks. In this paper, we introduce the reader to our novel proposals for providing efficient Mobile Terminal (MT) Location Discovery and Paging across an inter-worked network consisting a Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) network and Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) network. We further present numerical and simulation analyzes of our scheme. The numerical and simulation results allow broadcast and cellular network operators to configure their inter-worked system to reduce location management and paging costs whilst controlling average latency. Our results demonstrate that our UMTS LA plus DVB paging schemes offer promise for efficient MT discovery in an inter-network environment that includes uni-directional broadcast network such as DVB; under realistic scenarios we achieve a minimum 4 times reduction in paging cost across the inter-network compared with independent paging systems. Furthermore, we briefly introduce further aspects of research that must be addressed in order to fully evaluate our proposals.  相似文献
