The Development of Educational Policy for the Coloration Industries*

The relation between developments in the science and technology of coloration and changes in the educational system forcolouristsis emphasised, with particular reference to the Society's Associateship scheme. The trend away from science in the schools is discussed in relation to the requirements of the coloration industry. Personal views are expressed about the way in which the Society's scheme could develop in the future.

The Colour Museum now and the future

The Colour Museum has been one of the Society's most controversial areas since it wasset up in 1977. It achieved national prominence in 1988 when it one the award for the best technological museum of the year. Calculating the Size of Pipes for Transporting Steam and Fluids

The Society's Coloration Machinery Group, prior to its becoming part of the new Industrial Resources Committee, comissioned a series of articles to deal, in a practical manner, with the related topics of pipe sizing for steam and water, the measurement of fluid flow and the metering of liquids. The present article covers the first of these areas.     

Increased Profitability by the Efficient Use of Machinery and Materials

The Society's Resources Committee is concerned with the efficient use of all resources. This paper deals with the area of dye store management and indicates how efficiency can be improved and significant savings made by the use of suitable weighing and measuring equipment. It is shown that such equipment, as well as giving considerable improvements in processing, gives relatively short pay-back periods.

CIE94-a new colour-difference formula*

The Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage (CIE) has recently published a new colour-difference formula, called CIE94, for use in industrial pass/fail colour-difference work. It is based in CIELAB colour space but on the CMC(l:c) colour-difference formula. In this paper the history behind the development of the new formula is outlined, before the formula itself is described and compared with the CMC(l:c) formula. The role of future work in this area is briefly reviewed and the attitude of the Society's Colour Measurement Committee to CIE94 is outlined.

Economic Preparation of Woven Cotton Fabrics

Presented to the Society's Manchester Region on 21 March 1985 Developments in the use of hydrogen peroxide allow major cost savings in bleaching cotton fabrics without loss of preparation quality. These developments make maximum use of the desizing and bleaching properties of hydrogen peroxide. Higher than normal alkali concentrations are used and this requires effective stabilisers. The paper considers important factors in developing more economic preparation by cold pad bleaching or pad-steam processing, requiring only one pass through a steamer.     

Practical Instrumental Colour Quality Control - The Hatra Experience

Paper presented at the Society's ‘Teach-in’ on Quantitative Colour Control at the University of Nottingham on 20 September 1975. The requirements that are considered essential for successful operation for both the control system and the dyehouse organization are stated. There is a brief review of problems of formula selection, colorimeter selection, computation, and presentation of colour differences. Problems of dyehouse organization and tolerance-limit selection are discussed and illustrated. Views on customer-contractor relations in this connection are expressed.

Publication Sponsored by the Society's Scarce Resources Committee – III Potential Energy Savings in Dyeing and Finishing

In its Industrial Energy Thrift Scheme, the Department of Industry is publishing a series of reports on energy use and conservation in the different sectors of the manufacturing industry. Report No. 20*, ‘Energy Use in the Textile Finishing Sector’, published in August 1980, is based on work carried out under the scheme by Shirley Institute. Although the Report is readily available from the Department at Ashdown House, 123 Victoria Street, London, SW1E 6RB, and it is necessary to read the full account to get the maximum benefit, the Society's Scarce Resources Committee felt that an extended summary should be prepared and published in the Journal.     

Education,training and the economy

Since the economic crisis of the 1970s a whole range of policy initiatives has been introduced into the general educational framework with the aim of making education more relevant to the world of work. However, the various attempts to impose an ideology of economic utility on education have met with scepticism and criticism from many people in the education sector. This paper analyses some of the conceptual differences between education and training. It discusses how these differing concepts have contributed to debates on the nature and appropriateness of present-day education and training to securing a healthy economy. Though not specific to education and training in the area of colour science and technology, many of the issues raised form a backdrop to the deliberations of the Society's educational committees.
