Influence of Friction Spinning Process Parameters on Spinnability of Pergularia/Cotton-Blended Yarns
In this study, spinnability of Pergularia daemia seed fiber (70%) and cotton fiber (30%) core/100% cotton fiber sheath DREF-3 core yarns of 74 tex were studied using different spinning parameters in order to understand their effect on yarn properties. Box-Behnken Design was used for the optimization of core ratio, drum speed, and suction pressure and to evaluate the effects and interactions of the process variables on the yarn properties at a constant opening roller speed of 12,000 rpm and delivery rate of 100 m/min. The effect of the core/sheath ratio on yarn quality index is significant. With an increase in the core/sheath ratio, yarn tenacity, and elongation decreases due to insufficient wrapper fibers in the yarn and yarn unevenness increases due to higher feed rate and draft at higher core ratio. An increase in the spinning drum speed increases the yarn quality index up to certain range and then decreases at higher speed due to damaging of fibers in the sheath and more number of hooks at the end of fibers. At a higher air suction pressure, yarn tenacity and the elongation at break increases which ultimately increases the yarn quality index. From the regression analysis, it is observed that the drum speed and suction pressure has no significant effect on yarn unevenness.

The present paper is concerned with the influence of opening roller speed, difference in drum speed and suction air pressure on properties of acrylic open-end and core-sheath friction spun yarns. The results show that opening roller speed and suction air pressure have significant influence on properties of open-end friction spun yarns. In the case of core-sheath yarns, suction air pressure has influence on yarn tenacity and hairiness. However, yarn unevenness and imperfection are not significantly influenced by experimental variables. The results also show that core-sheath friction spun yarns have significantly higher yarn tenacity, modulus and work of rupture and have a lower level of yarn unevenness, imperfections, hairiness, and breaking elongation than open-end friction spun yarns.

A study of significant factors and their interaction during vortex yarn spinning has been carried out to achieve desired mechanical properties of the polyethylene terephthalate/cotton blended yarns which can offer process and performance advantages. The key significant factors, i.e. feed ratio, air pressure and spindle size were varied in a mixed-level factorial design. The mechanical properties (count lea strength product, tenacity and elongation at break) were studied and feed ratio was found to significantly affect the tenacity and elongation at break of spun yarns. A significant effect of these parameters was observed on the diameter and hairiness of the Muratec vortex spun yarn.

This article reports detailed study on the impact of some DREF-III machine variables (i.e. opening roller speed, suction air pressure and difference in drum speed) and sliver feeding positions on configuration of fibres in the yarn. It has been observed that percentages of leading and trailing hooks are significantly influenced by the feeding position of sliver. The machine variables also found to have significant influence on fibre configuration in most of the cases. The configuration of fibres is found to be controlled by air flow characteristics inside the duct and by landing behaviour of fibres on the spinning drums. In addition, it has been found that the machine variables have least impact on configuration of core fibres.

Murata Vortex spinning (MVS) system is one of the unconventional systems for yarn manufacturing. It is suitable for spinning of 100% cotton fibers, synthetic fibers, and cotton/synthetic fiber blends which are 1 inch or more in length. The production ranges are between Ne 15-60. Vortex yarn and fabrics have low hairiness, clear appearance, high resistance to pilling and abrasion. In this study, the vortex yarns with Ne 30 are produced in different blend ratios in Murata Vortex Spinner using carded cotton, viscose, modal, silver-added polyester (Flexsil-D2?), polyester, and nylon 6.6 fibers. Vortex spun yarns are tested to determine the yarn properties which are diameter, density, roundness (shape), unevenness, imperfection, Uster hairiness (H), Zweigle hairiness, tenacity, and elongation. The study reveals that the fiber type has quite significant effects on yarn properties. In terms of structural properties, cotton is the most negative fiber while regenerated cellulosic fibers are the most positive. As modal, nylon and polyester fiber increase yarn strength, nylon and viscose fiber increase breaking elongation. Viscose and modal reduce unevenness, imperfection and hairiness while polyester and nylon exhibit more negative effect on these properties.

This article presents the use of quadratic general rotary unitized design method in optimization of spinning parameters of T-400/cotton core spun yarn on a ring frame. T-400 is a bicomponent filament based on sorona 3GT polymer form DuPont. An experimental design was generated using MINITAB© 15 which included three factors and five levels. Three factors were the twist, filament draw ratio, and the spindle speed with respect to the yarn properties tested by Uster tester. The research draws clear application of quadratic general rotary unitized method on optimization, with step by step analysis of the variable factors in relation to responses. The optimum spinning parameters for hairiness, evenness, and tenacity while holding other yarn qualities as limiting factors were the following: twist value 430 TPM, filament draw ratio of 0.945, and the spindle speed of 7494 rpm.

This paper examines empirical relationships between the geometrical parameters of the spinning triangle and the quality parameters of ring spun yarns. For this purpose, controlled variations in the geometry of the spinning triangle were induced using two existing modifications in the ring spinning process and by varying the yarn twist level. The geometrical parameters of the spinning triangle were measured using the clear rubber roller combined with digital image processing techniques as described in the first part of this study. The yarn quality parameters measured included yarn hairiness, strength, elongation and evenness. Yarn hairiness showed more noticeable sensitivity towards the physical shape of the spinning triangle than yarn tenacity, while yarn evenness and elongation were not significantly influenced by changes in spinning triangle geometry.

Opening of fibres by opening roller (OR) in rotor spinning is one of the most influential parameters on yarn quality. In order to increase working surface of the OR, its width was increased by 25 and 50% with respect to the original width and nine samples of yarn were produced. Yarn properties tested were tenacity, strain at peak, work of rupture, evenness, imperfections, hairiness and fibre extent within the yarn structure. It was concluded from the test results that, an increase in fibre opening in lower level improves yarn quality. However, further increase in amount of fibre opening at higher level improves the quality up to a certain point, and then it deteriorates. Yarn sample B8 was the best yarn produced and was superior to the rest of the yarns.

ABSTRACTThe use of single-core elastic spun cotton yarns is well established in textiles and denim industry but interest in the use of dual-core-spun yarns has started to grow only recently. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polyester and elastane linear density on the physical and mechanical properties of dual-core-spun cotton yarns. Yarn samples were prepared on industrial-scale spinning machines using cotton as the sheath fibers and two different linear densities of polyester and three different linear densities of elastane filaments in the core. Statistical analysis of the results revealed that yarn tenacity, elongation, uniformity, and hairiness are significantly affected by the linear densities of both the polyester and elastane filaments in the core, with statistically significant interaction between them. Yarn imperfections (IPI), however, are affected mainly by the polyester denier, while the elastane linear density did not show statistically significant effect on the IPI. Regression equations for different yarn properties were also developed which showed fairly high values of coefficient of determination (R-sq).

In this paper, 14 types of kapok blended yarns and four types of cotton yarns manufactured through different spinning technologies and processing methods were selected in order to explore the most efficient spinning technology for kapok fiber. Four yarn characteristics were measured: yarn fineness/unevenness, yarn defects, yarn hairiness, and breaking tenacity. According to Uster Statistics 2007, GB-T/398-2008, and FZ12001-1992 standards, the analytical results of the four characteristics showed that the quality of kapok blended yarns achieved a higher level with the improvement of spinning technology. The compact spinning and processing technology IV was a preferred way to spin high-quality kapok blended yarn, which lent support to widening the application of kapok fibers in various end-use products.
