It can sometimes be difficult to think about “everyday” objects, those things we are so familiar with that they become taken-for-granted aspects of the backdrop of our world. But what if those objects, despite their everydayness, are politically fraught and call for closer examination? I suggest that insights from two contemporary perspectives, postphenomenology and actor-network theory, are useful for drawing out the experiential, social, and political dynamics of everyday things. In this paper, I review and resituate several key concepts from these two theoretical frameworks and outline a method for using them together for the evaluation of technology. As a guiding example, I explore a paradigmatic everyday device: fire hydrants. Despite their everyday character, hydrants fulfill multiple social roles, some of them loaded with difficult and important political implications.  相似文献

While computers have become increasingly important in the workplace, there is growing concern that women tend to be underrepresented in computer-related fields. The present study was concerned with teaching computer skills to female novices. In particular, we were interested in designing an instructional manual that would facilitate learning computer skills and increase computer self-efficacy. An experimental instructional package based on a familiar but complex analogy was designed. It was compared to a control instructional package which was similar to commonly available computer learning packages. Twenty female undergraduate computer novices were given either the experimental or the control instructional package and were asked to reproduce a standardized letter. Results indicated that experimental subjects performed better in reproducing the letter and tended to make fewer requests for help than control subjects. Self-efficacy appeared to be influenced by subjective evaluations of success. Teaching novel computer tasks within the framework of a familiar analogy may offer an effective means of facilitating computer learning for female novices.  相似文献

An algebraic view of recursive definitions is presented, extending an already familiar analogy with homomorphisms. A notion of simulation of one recursive definition by another is then defined. This leads to a particular approach to verification and transformation, which places emphasis on the arrows between programs, rather than the programs themselves. These arrows are the program morphisms of the title. Examples are given, together with certain extensions of the idea. Also indicated is a methodology which can lead to the discovery of program morphisms and new equivalent versions of a given program.  相似文献

Two-dimensional computer aided engineering design systems are recognized as having limitations in comparison with the alternative three-dimensional techniques of solid modelling. The mathematically sounder approach of solid modelling permits far greater integration between the activities of functional design, design analysis and manufacturing. However, the existing methods of specifying design geometry within typical solid modelling systems are deficient in that they relate more to the mathematical needs of the computer system than they do to the needs of the designer. CAPE-LUT (Computer Aided Production Engineering-Loughborough University of Technology) is a prototype system which provides a machining analogy so that geometric and manufacturing ideas can be expressed through familiar engineering terminology, to provide detail designs and outline process plans. CAPE-LUT is an experimental vehicle only and the system has been used to investigate the hypothesis that a 'manufacturing features' approach to design and manufacture is easy to learn, accurate and fast in use, and acceptable to practising designers and manufacturing engineers. This paper describes the experimental work, which provides statistical evidence that the manufacturing features method is significantly easier to learn than a similar CAD system that has a purely geometric interface. It is also shown that CAPE-LUT performed well when used by experienced subjects and was acceptable to a large number of practising engineers.  相似文献

The present study investigates the effects of multimedia and schema induced analogical reasoning on science learning. It involves 89 fourth grade elementary students in the north‐east of the United States. Participants are randomly assigned into four conditions: (a) multimedia with analogy; (b) multimedia without analogy; (c) analogy without multimedia; and (d) non‐multimedia and non‐analogy. The multivariate analyses of covariance reveal significant main effects for multimedia and analogy learning as well as a significant interaction between multimedia and analogy. The findings show that schema induced analogical reasoning can significantly improve science learning and that multimedia becomes more effective when it is integrated with an instructional method such as analogy and less so when it is used only as a visual tool. The study also shows the field dependence/independence as a significant covariate that influences learners' schema induced analogical reasoning in learning. Discussions pertaining to the significance of the findings and their implications for teaching and learning are made. Suggestions for future research are included with an emphasis on developing multimedia supported analogical reasoning for science learning.  相似文献

Shape grammars have offered a unique computational theory of design over the past forty or so years. Although the focus of shape grammar theory has been on shapes and designs, the material objects or things that might comply with shapes have also been considered. In this paper, I trace the history of approaches for specifying material properties and things through shape grammars. I identify early trends and their limitations, and then propose a new possibility. In early approaches, material things were viewed through the lens of shapes. I argue for a new approach in which shapes are viewed through the lens of material things. Shape grammars are adapted to define making grammars for computing things. Shapes are just one of many things that can be made with these grammars. I conclude with a discussion of the relationship of designing and making, and suggest that designing is a kind of making.  相似文献

An efficient algorithm based on flux difference splitting is presented for the solution of the three-dimensional equations of isentropic flow in a generalised coordinate system, and with a general convex gas law. The scheme is based on solving linearised Riemann problems approximately and in more than one dimension incorporates operator splitting. The algorithm requires only one function evaluation of the gas law in each computational cell. The scheme has good shock capturing properties and the advantage of using body-fitted meshes. Numerical results are shown for Mach 3 flow of air past a circular cylinder. Furthermore, the algorithm also applies to shallow water flows by employing the familiar gas dynamics analogy.  相似文献
