An always increasing knowledge on material properties as well as a progressively more sophisticated production technology make shape memory alloys (SMA) extremely interesting for the industrial world. At the same time, SMA devices are typically characterized by complex multi‐axial stress states as well as non‐homogeneous and non‐isothermal conditions both in space and time. This aspect suggests the finite element method as a useful tool to help and improve application design and realization. With this aim, we focus on a three‐dimensional macroscopic thermo‐mechanical model able to reproduce the most significant SMA features (Int. J. Numer. Methods Eng. 2002; 55 : 1255–1264), proposing a simple modification of such a model. However, the suggested modification allows the development of a time‐discrete solution algorithm, which is more effective and robust than the one previously discussed in the literature. We verify the computational tool ability to simulate realistic mechanical boundary value problems with prescribed temperature dependence, studying three SMA applications: a spring actuator, a self‐expanding stent, a coupling device for vacuum tightness. The effectiveness of the model to solve thermo‐mechanical coupled problems will be discussed in a forthcoming work. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This paper aims at presenting a general consistent numerical formulation able to take into account, in a coupled way, strain rate, thermal and damage effects on the behavior of materials submitted to quasistatic or dynamic loading conditions in a large deformation context. The main features of this algorithmic treatment are as follows:
  • A unified treatment for the analysis and implicit time integration of thermo‐elasto‐viscoplastic constitutive equations including damage that depends on the strain rate for dynamic loading conditions. This formalism enables us to use dynamic thermomechanically coupled damage laws in an implicit framework.
  • An implicit framework developed for time integration of the equations of motion. An efficient staggered solution procedure has been elaborated and implemented so that the inertia and heat conduction effects can be properly treated.
  • An operator split‐based implementation, accompanied by a unified method to analytically evaluate the consistent tangent operator for the (implicit) coupled damage–thermo‐elasto‐viscoplastic problem.
  • The possibility to couple any hardening law, including rate‐dependent models, with any damage model that fits into the present framework.
All the developments have been considered in the framework of an implicit finite element code adapted to large strain problems. The numerical model will be illustrated by several applications issued from the impact and metal‐forming domains. All these physical phenomena have been included into an oriented object finite element code (implemented at LTAS‐MN 2L, University of Liège, Belgium) named Metafor.Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An adaptively stabilized monolithic finite element model is proposed to simulate the fully coupled thermo‐hydro‐mechanical behavior of porous media undergoing large deformation. We first formulate a finite‐deformation thermo‐hydro‐mechanics field theory for non‐isothermal porous media. Projection‐based stabilization procedure is derived to eliminate spurious pore pressure and temperature modes due to the lack of the two‐fold inf‐sup condition of the equal‐order finite element. To avoid volumetric locking due to the incompressibility of solid skeleton, we introduce a modified assumed deformation gradient in the formulation for non‐isothermal porous solids. Finally, numerical examples are given to demonstrate the versatility and efficiency of this thermo‐hydro‐mechanical model. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A novel coupled thermo‐mechanical nonordinary state‐based peridynamics is proposed to study thermally induced damage in rocks. The thermal expansion characteristics of solid material are introduced into the coupled thermomechanical model to consider the influence of temperature. The deformation gradient tensor is obtained by the temperature fields, which is solved by peridynamic heat conduction theory. By introducing the deformation gradient tensor into the force state function of the nonordinary state‐based peridynamics, the coupling of thermal and mechanical is realized. A failure criterion is developed to investigate the thermally induced cracking of rocks. Then, the validity of the coupled thermo‐mechanical model is demonstrated by a numerical simulation. The correctness of the coupled model is validated by a benchmark example with analytic solution. Moreover, the thermal cracking progress in rocks is simulated using the proposed coupled nonordinary state‐based peridynamic model, and it is found that the numerical results are in good agreement with the previous experimental observations.  相似文献

We present an efficient numerical method to solve for cyclic steady states of nonlinear electro‐mechanical devices excited at resonance. Many electro‐mechanical systems are designed to operate at resonance, where the ramp‐up simulation to steady state is computationally very expensive – especially when low damping is present. The proposed method relies on a Newton–Krylov shooting scheme for the direct calculation of the cyclic steady state, as opposed to a naïve transient time‐stepping from zero initial conditions. We use a recently developed high‐order Eulerian–Lagrangian finite element method in combination with an energy‐preserving dynamic contact algorithm in order to solve the coupled electro‐mechanical boundary value problem. The nonlinear coupled equations are evolved by means of an operator split of the mechanical and electrical problem with an explicit as well as implicit approach. The presented benchmark examples include the first three fundamental modes of a vibrating nanotube, as well as a micro‐electro‐mechanical disk resonator in dynamic steady contact. For the examples discussed, we observe power law computational speed‐ups of the form S  = 0.6·ξ  ? 0.8, where ξ is the linear damping ratio of the corresponding resonance frequency. This paper presents a general framework for the macroscopic, continuum‐based formulation and numerical implementation of dissipative functional materials with electro‐magneto‐mechanical couplings based on incremental variational principles. We focus on quasi‐static problems, where mechanical inertia effects and time‐dependent electro‐magnetic couplings are a priori neglected and a time‐dependence enters the formulation only through a possible rate‐dependent dissipative material response. The underlying variational structure of non‐reversible coupled processes is related to a canonical constitutive modeling approach, often addressed to so‐called standard dissipative materials. It is shown to have enormous consequences with respect to all aspects of the continuum‐based modeling in macroscopic electro‐magneto‐mechanics. At first, the local constitutive modeling of the coupled dissipative response, i.e. stress, electric and magnetic fields versus strain, electric displacement and magnetic induction, is shown to be variational based, governed by incremental minimization and saddle‐point principles. Next, the implications on the formulation of boundary‐value problems are addressed, which appear in energy‐based formulations as minimization principles and in enthalpy‐based formulations in the form of saddle‐point principles. Furthermore, the material stability of dissipative electro‐magneto‐mechanics on the macroscopic level is defined based on the convexity/concavity of incremental potentials. We provide a comprehensive outline of alternative variational structures and discuss details of their computational implementation, such as formulation of constitutive update algorithms and finite element solvers. From the viewpoint of constitutive modeling, including the understanding of the stability in coupled electro‐magneto‐mechanics, an energy‐based formulation is shown to be the canonical setting. From the viewpoint of the computational convenience, an enthalpy‐based formulation is the most convenient setting. A numerical investigation of a multiferroic composite demonstrates perspectives of the proposed framework with regard to the future design of new functional materials. Partitioned procedures are appealing for solving complex fluid‐structure interaction (FSI) problems, as they allow existing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and computational structural dynamics algorithms and solvers to be combined and reused. However, for problems involving incompressible flow and strong added‐mass effect (eg, heavy fluid and slender structure), partitioned procedures suffer from numerical instability, which typically requires additional subiterations between the fluid and structural solvers, hence significantly increasing the computational cost. This paper investigates the use of Robin‐Neumann transmission conditions to mitigate the above instability issue. Firstly, an embedded Robin boundary method is presented in the context of projection‐based incompressible CFD and finite element–based computational structural dynamics. The method utilizes operator splitting and a modified ghost fluid method to enforce the Robin transmission condition on fluid‐structure interfaces embedded in structured non–body‐conforming CFD grids. The method is demonstrated and verified using the Turek and Hron benchmark problem, which involves a slender beam undergoing large transient deformation in an unsteady vortex‐dominated channel flow. Secondly, this paper investigates the effect of the combination parameter in the Robin transmission condition, ie, αf, on numerical stability and solution accuracy. This paper presents a numerical study using the Turek and Hron benchmark problem and an analytical study using a simplified FSI model featuring an Euler‐Bernoulli beam interacting with a two‐dimensional incompressible inviscid flow. Both studies reveal a trade‐off between stability and accuracy: smaller values of αf tend to improve numerical stability, yet deteriorate the accuracy of the partitioned solution. Using the simplified FSI model, the critical value of αf that optimizes this trade‐off is derived and discussed.  相似文献

An adaptive refinement scheme is presented to reduce the geometry discretization error and provide higher‐order enrichment functions for the interface‐enriched generalized FEM. The proposed method relies on the h‐adaptive and p‐adaptive refinement techniques to reduce the discrepancy between the exact and discretized geometries of curved material interfaces. A thorough discussion is provided on identifying the appropriate level of the refinement for curved interfaces based on the size of the elements of the background mesh. Varied techniques are then studied for selecting the quasi‐optimal location of interface nodes to obtain a more accurate approximation of the interface geometry. We also discuss different approaches for creating the integration sub‐elements and evaluating the corresponding enrichment functions together with their impact on the performance and computational cost of higher‐order enrichments. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the application of the adaptive interface‐enriched generalized FEM for modeling thermo‐mechanical problems with intricate geometries. The accuracy and convergence rate of the method are also studied in these example problems. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This work addresses computational modeling challenges associated with structures subjected to sharp, local heating, where complex temperature gradients in the materials cause three‐dimensional, localized, intense stress and strain variation. Because of the nature of the applied loadings, multiphysics analysis is necessary to accurately predict thermal and mechanical responses. Moreover, bridging spatial scales between localized heating and global responses of the structure is nontrivial. A large global structural model may be necessary to represent detailed geometry alone, and to capture local effects, the traditional approach of pre‐designing a mesh requires careful manual effort. These issues often lead to cumbersome and expensive global models for this class of problems. To address them, the authors introduce a generalized FEM (GFEM) approach for analyzing three‐dimensional solid, coupled physics problems exhibiting localized heating and corresponding thermomechanical effects. The capabilities of traditional hp‐adaptive FEM or GFEM as well as the GFEM with global–local enrichment functions are extended to one‐way coupled thermo‐structural problems, providing meshing flexibility at local and global scales while remaining competitive with traditional approaches. The methods are demonstrated on several example problems with localized thermal and mechanical solution features, and accuracy and (parallel) computational efficiency relative to traditional direct modeling approaches are discussed. The present contribution provides a new approach to the design of energy momentum consistent integration schemes in the field of nonlinear thermo‐elastodynamics. The method is inspired by the structure of polyconvex energy density functions and benefits from a tensor cross product that greatly simplifies the algebra. Furthermore, a temperature‐based weak form is used, which facilitates the design of a structure‐preserving time‐stepping scheme for coupled thermoelastic problems. This approach is motivated by the general equation for nonequilibrium reversible‐irreversible coupling (GENERIC) framework for open systems. In contrast to complex projection‐based discrete derivatives, a new form of an algorithmic stress formula is proposed. The spatial discretization relies on finite element interpolations for the displacements and the temperature. The superior performance of the proposed formulation is shown within representative quasi‐static and fully transient numerical examples.  相似文献

An updated Lagrangian implicit FEM model for the analysis of large thermo‐mechanically coupled hyperelastic‐viscoplastic deformations of isotropic porous materials is considered. An appropriate framework for constitutive modelling is introduced that includes a stress‐free thermally expanded configuration and a plastically deformed unstressed damaged configuration. A two‐level iterative scheme is employed at each time increment to solve the field equations governing the conservation of momentum (mechanical step) and the conservation of energy (thermal step) for the coupled thermo‐mechanical problem. Exact linearizations for the calculation of the tangent stiffness are performed in each of these solution steps. A fully implicit, thermo‐mechanically coupled and incrementally objective Euler‐backward radial return based map is developed for the time integration of the constitutive equations. The present model is used to analyse a number of benchmark examples including metal forming processes wherein temperature and the accumulated damage play an important role in influencing the deformation mechanism and the nature of the deformed workpiece. The possibility of using free‐slip conditions within the context of the particle finite element method (PFEM) is investigated. For high Reynolds number engineering applications in which tangential effects at the fluid–solid boundaries are not of primary interest, the use of free‐slip conditions can alleviate the need for very fine boundary layer meshes. Two novel ways for the imposition of free‐slip conditions in the framework of the PFEM are presented. The proposed approach emphasizes robustness and simplicity, while retaining a sufficient level of generality. These two methods are then tested in the case of dam break and sloshing problems, and their respective advantages and drawbacks are discussed. It is also shown how the use of free‐slip conditions can indirectly improve mass conservation properties of the PFEM, even when coarse meshes are employed. A coupled finite element model is developed to analyse the thermo‐mechanical behaviour of a widely used polymer composite panel subject to high temperatures at service conditions. Thermo‐chemical and thermo‐mechanical models of previous researchers have been extended to study the thermo‐chemical decomposition, internal heat and mass transfer, deformation and the stress state of the material. The phenomena of heat and mass transfer and thermo‐mechanical deformation are simulated using three sets of governing equations, i.e. energy, gas mass diffusion and deformation equations. These equations are then assembled into a coupled matrix equation using the Bubnov–Galerkin finite element formulation and then solved simultaneously at each time interval. An experimentally tested 1.09 cm thick glass‐fibre woven‐roving/polyester resin composite panel is analysed using the numerical model. Results are presented in the form of temperature, pore pressure, deformation, strain and stress profiles and discussed. The maximum normal stress failure criterion is used in order to establish the load‐bearing capability of the composite panel. Significant pore gas pressure build‐ups (to 0.8 MPa and higher) have been perceived at high thermo‐chemical decomposition rates where the material experiences a complex expansion/contraction phenomenon. It is found that the composite panel experiences structural instability at elevated temperatures up to 300°C but retains its integrity even under moderate external loading. A hybrid numerical method for modelling the evolution of sharp phase interfaces on fixed grids is presented. We focus attention on two‐dimensional solidification problems, where the temperature field evolves according to classical heat conduction in two subdomains separated by a moving freezing front. The enrichment strategies of the eXtended Finite Element Method (X‐FEM) are employed to represent the jump in the temperature gradient that governs the velocity of the phase boundary. A new approach with the X‐FEM is suggested for this class of problems whereby the partition of unity is constructed with C1(Ω) polynomials and enriched with a C0(Ω) function. This approach leads to jumps in temperature gradient occurring only at the phase boundary, and is shown to significantly improve estimates for the front velocity. Temporal derivatives of the temperature field in the vicinity of the phase front are obtained with a projection that employs discontinuous enrichment. In conjunction with a finer finite difference grid, the Level Set method is used to represent the evolution of the phase interface. An iterative procedure is adopted to satisfy the constraints on the temperature field on the phase boundary. The robustness and utility of the method is demonstrated with several benchmark problems of phase transformation. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Dielectric materials like electro‐active polymers (EAPs) exhibit coupled electro‐mechanical behavior at large strains. They respond by a deformation to an applied electrical field and are used in advanced industrial environments as sensors and actuators, for example, in robotics, biomimetics and smart structures. In field‐activated or electronic EAPs, the electric activation is driven by Coulomb‐type electrostatic forces, resulting in Maxwell stresses. These materials are able to provide finite actuation strains, which can even be improved by optimizing their composite microstructure. However, EAPs suffer from different types of instabilities. This concerns global structural instabilities, such as buckling and wrinkling of EAP devices, as well as local material instabilities, such as limit‐points and bifurcation‐points in the constitutive response, which induce snap‐through and fine scale localization of local states. In this work, we outline variational‐based definitions for structural and material stability, and design algorithms for accompanying stability checks in typical finite element computations. The formulation starts from stability criteria for a canonical energy minimization principle of electro‐elasto‐statics, and then shifts them over to representations related to an enthalpy‐based saddle point principle that is considered as the most convenient setting for numerical implementation. Here, global structural stability is analyzed based on a perturbation of the total electro‐mechanical energy, and related to statements of positive definiteness of incremental finite element tangent arrays. We base the local material stability on an incremental quasi‐convexity condition of the electro‐mechanical energy, inducing the positive definiteness of both the incremental electro‐mechanical moduli as well as a generalized acoustic tensor. It is shown that the incremental arrays to be analyzed in the stability criteria appear within the enthalpy‐based setting in a distinct diagonal form, with pure mechanical and pure electrical partitions. Applications of accompanying stability analyses in finite element computations are demonstrated by means of representative model problems. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A finite element algorithm has been developed for the efficient analysis of smart composite structures with piezoelectric polymer sensors or/and actuators based on piezoelectro‐hygro‐thermo‐viscoelasticity. Variational principles for anisotropic coupled piezoelectro‐hygro‐thermo‐viscoelasto‐dynamic problems have also been proposed in this study. As illustrative studies, dynamic responses in laminated composite beams and plates with PVDF sensors and actuators are obtained as functions of time using the present finite element procedures. The voltage feedback control scheme is utilized. The proposed numerical method can be used for analysing problems in the design of smart structures as well as smart sensors and actuators. The coupling of Finite Element Method (FEM) with a Boundary Element Method (BEM) is a desirable result that exploits the advantages of each. This paper examines the efficient symmetric coupling of a Symmetric Galerkin Multi‐zone Curved Boundary Element Analysis method with a Finite Element Method for 2‐D elastic problems. Existing collocation based multi‐zone boundary element methods are not symmetric. Thus, when they are coupled with FEM, it is very difficult to achieve symmetry, increasing the computational work to solve the problem. This paper uses a fully Symmetric curved Multi‐zone Galerkin Boundary Element Approach that is coupled to an FEM in a completely symmetric fashion. The symmetry is achieved by symmetrically converting the boundary zones into equivalent ‘macro finite elements’, that are symmetric, so that symmetry in the coupling is retained. This computationally efficient and fast approach can be used to solve a wide range of problems, although only 2‐D elastic problems are shown. Three elasticity problems, including one from the FEM‐BEM literature that explore the efficacy of the approach are presented. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, the finite element formulation of a transition element for consistent coupling between shell and beam finite element models of thin‐walled beam‐like structures in thermo‐elastic problems is presented. Thin‐walled beam‐like structures modelled only with beam elements cannot be used to study local stress concentrations or to provide local mechanical or thermal boundary conditions. For this purpose, the structure has to be modelled using shell elements. However, computations using shell elements are a lot more expensive as compared to beam elements. The finite element model can be more efficient when the shell elements are used only in regions where the local effects are to be studied or local boundary conditions have to be provided. The remaining part of the structure can be modelled with beam elements. To couple these two models (i.e. shell and beam models) at transitional cross‐sections, transition elements are derived here for thermo‐elastic problems. The formulation encloses large displacement and rotational behaviour, which is important in case of thin‐walled beam‐like structures. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
