For the preparation of a water‐selective membrane for the pervaporation separation of an azeotropic solution, a series of grafted copolymers were synthesized by the reaction of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with poly(sodium salt styrene sulfonic acid‐co‐maleic acid) (PSStSA‐co‐MA). The esterification was performed between the hydroxyl groups of PVA and the carboxylic groups of the copolymer with a heat treatment. PSStSA‐co‐MA was prepared with sodium salt styrene sulfonic acid and maleic anhydride copolymerization in dimethyl sulfoxide with azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. The reaction mechanism and resultant structure were confirmed with IR spectra. The effect of the heat‐treatment time on the gel content was investigated. The permeation flux decreased and the separation factor increased as the crosslinking agent content rose. A membrane containing 15 wt % PSStSA‐co‐MA was used for water–ethanol azeotropic solution pervaporation at 30°C, and a flux of 0.43 kg/m2 h and a separation factor of 190 were obtained. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Solid polymer membranes from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylamide‐co‐acrylic acid) (PAA) with varying doping ratios of sorbitol were prepared using the solution casting method. The films were examined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and AC impedance spectroscopy. The impedance measurements showed that the ionic conductivity of PVA–PAA polymer membrane can be controlled by controlled doping of sorbitol within the polymer blends. The PVA–PAA–sorbitol membranes were found to exhibit excellent thermal properties and were stable for a wide temperature range (398–563K), which creates a possibility of using them as suitable polymers for device applications. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pervaporation membranes for the dehydration of water–ethanol mixtures were prepared from a semi‐interpenetrating polymer network (semi‐IPN) of natural rubber (NR) and crosslinked poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The swelling studies revealed that hydrophilic PAA present in the semi‐IPN membranes caused the membranes to swell greatly in water. The swelling degree of the membranes in water was significantly affected by the amount ratio between the hydrophobic NR and the hydrophilic PAA. The sorption experiments of the NR/PAA membranes in various concentrations of water–ethanol mixtures suggested the preferential sorption to water. However, for the membrane with high PAA content, the water sorption selectivity decreased considerably at high water concentration of water–ethanol mixtures because the membrane was in the highly swollen state. Pervaporation separations of water–ethanol mixtures using NR/PAA membranes were performed and it was found that at low water concentrations of feed mixtures, increasing the PAA content of the membrane can enhance both water permeation flux and selectivity. Additionally, under low feed water concentration, increasing the feed temperature would increase the water flux with the decreasing of the ethanol flux. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The radical‐initiated terpolymerization of 3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐pyran (DHP), maleic anhydride (MA), and vinyl acetate (VA), which were used as a donor–acceptor–donor system, was carried out in methyl ethyl ketone in the presence of 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator at 65°C in a nitrogen atmosphere. The synthesis and characterization of binary and ternary copolymers, some kinetic parameters of terpolymerization, the terpolymer‐composition/thermal‐behavior relationship, and the antitumor activity of the synthesized polymers were examined. The polymerization of the DHP–MA–VA monomer system predominantly proceeded by the alternating terpolymerization mechanism. The in vitro cytotoxicities of poly(3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐pyran‐alt‐maleic anhydride) [poly(DHP‐alt‐MA)] and poly(3,4‐dihydro‐2H‐pyran‐co‐maleic anhydride‐co‐vinyl acetate) [poly(DHP‐co‐MA‐co‐VA)] were evaluated with Raji cells (human Burkitt lymphoma cell line). The antitumor activity of the prepared anion‐active poly(DHP‐alt‐MA) and poly(DHP‐co‐MA‐co‐VA) polymers were studied with methyl–thiazol–tetrazolium testing, and the 50% cytotoxic dose was calculated. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(1‐trimethylsilyl‐1‐propyne) (PTMSP) is known to show preferential permeation of ethanol in the pervaporation of ethanol–water mixture. Although this polymer presents good characteristics for the separation of organic–water solutions, operation conditions and membrane characteristics, such as thickness, affect its pervaporation performance. The effect of temperature and feed concentration on pervaporation was studied. During pervaporation of 10 wt % ethanol–water solution, the separation factor (αH2OEtOH) remains almost constant, whereas the permeation flux (F) increases exponentially with operation temperature. On the other hand, the separation factor decreases, whereas the permeation flux increases with ethanol content in the feed mixture. The membrane thickness also affects the performance of PTMSP polymer films: selectivity increases sharply with membrane thickness up to 50 μm, whereas it remains constant for thicker membranes. The permeation flux decreases with membrane thickness in the whole range studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 94:1395–1403, 2004  相似文献

A new type of composite membrane for pervaporation has been developed. These membranes were prepared by free‐radical copolymerization of acrylic acid with a macromolecular polyfunctional crosslinker (allylhydroxyethylcellulose) inside the porous polyethylene (PE) film. It was shown that the porous structure of the PE matrix is filled with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), and a layer of acid is formed on the film surface. To investigate the effect of the porous matrix on the composite membrane properties, a hydrogel membrane of crosslinked PAA was also prepared without the matrix using the same procedure. PAA in both membranes was in the neutralized form (K+). Swelling behavior of the membranes and their separation characteristics for pervaporation were investigated in water–ethanol solutions depending on the ethanol concentration. All membranes exhibited a high degree of equilibrium swelling (Q = 20–50 g/g) in dilute ethanol solutions (0–30 vol %), and Q sharply dropped to 1.5–2 g/g at a EtOH concentration of 30–40 vol % due to collapse of the gel. All membranes under study were highly permeable and selective to water over a wide range of ethanol concentrations in the feed (50–96 vol %), but composite membranes had a higher separation factor due to the restriction effect of the matrix porous structure on swelling of PAA(K+) inside the pores. However, composite membranes were characterized by a lower permeation rate, compared to the crosslinked PAA membranes without a matrix, because of their lower effective surface for diffusion. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sulfated zirconia‐poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes were prepared, and pervaporation performances for aqueous organic mixtures were investigated. These hydrophilic membranes were formed by crosslinking poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with the solid acid of sulfated zirconia by an acid‐catalyzed reaction. The pervaporation performances were measured as a function of the content ratio of sulfated zirconia to PVA, which affected the degree of swelling for water and the crosslinking density of the membrane. The membrane selectivity in pervaporation of aqueous organic mixtures increased in order of acetic acid < ethanol < 2‐ethoxyethanol without sacrificing the permeation rate, depending on their feed compositions. The effects of feed temperature and concentration on the membrane performance were also significant. It was found that sulfated zirconia in the membrane preparation played an important role as a filler material as well as an effective crosslinking or insolubilization agent in improving and controlling the membrane performance, i.e., permeation rate and selectivity. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Poly(vinyl alcohol) as well as its grafted copolymer membranes with polyacrylonitrile (PAN‐g‐PVA) were prepared and used to separate water and dimethyl formamide mixtures by the pervaporation technique. The three following membranes were prepared: (1) pure PVA; (2) 46% grafted PAN‐g‐PVA; and (3) 93% grafted PAN‐g‐PVA. Pervaporation separation experiments were carried out at 25°C for the feed mixture containing 10 to 90% water. By use of the transport data, permeation flux, separation selectivity, swelling index, and diffusion coefficients have been calculated. By increasing the grafting of the membrane, flux decreased, whereas separation selectivity increased slightly over that of pure PVA membrane. Arrhenius activation parameters for transport processes were calculated for 10 mass % water containing feed mixture by using flux and diffusion data obtained at 25, 35, and 45°C. Transport parameters were discussed in terms of sorption‐diffusion principles. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 4091–4097, 2004  相似文献

Crosslinked blended membranes of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and N-methylol nylon-6 were prepared either by thermal crosslinking at 180°C or by chemical crosslinking with maleic acid. The pervaporation performance for the separation of ethanol–water mixtures of these membranes was investigated in terms of feed concentration, PVA content, and crosslinking agent content. The pervaporation performance of two differently crosslinked membranes was strongly influenced by the nature of the crosslinkage. Significant improvement in the pervaporation separation index can be achieved for chemically crosslinked membranes. From the comparison between the pervaporation and sorption tests, it is suggested that, for hydrophilic membranes, sorption properties dominate the pervaporation performance at feed solutions of higher water content, while diffusion properties govern at feed solutions of higher ethanol content. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microporous poly(ether sulfone) (PES) supported hybrid polymer–inorganic membranes were prepared by the crosslinking of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), maleic acid (MA), and SiO2 via an aqueous sol–gel route and a solution‐casting method. The membrane performance was tested for the pervaporation separation of ethanol–water mixtures from 20 to 60 °C with a feed ethanol concentration of 96 wt %. The membrane characterization results reveal that different SiO2 loadings affected the crystallinity and roughness of the membranes. The PVA–MA–SiO2 membrane containing 10 wt % SiO2 showed that SiO2 nanoparticles were well dispersed within the polymer matrix; this resulted in significant enhancements in both the flux and selectivity. The membrane achieved a high water permeability of 1202 g·μm·m?2 h?1 kPa?1 and a selectivity of 1027 for the separation of a 96 wt % ethanol‐containing aqueous solution. This enhanced membrane performance might have been due to the dense crosslinking membrane network, increased free volume, and uniform distribution of SiO2 nanoparticles. Both the water and ethanol fluxes increased with the feed water concentration and temperature. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134 , 44839.  相似文献

An electrostatic self‐assembly technique was applied to prepare ion complex polymer layers on polyacrylonitrile with acrylic acid segments {poly(acrylonitrile‐co‐acrylic acid) [P(AN‐co‐AA)]}. For the ionic complex layers, quaternary ammonium salts, such as cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC) and tetramethyl ammonium chloride (TMAC), were used as cationic species, and also, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was used as an anionic species. These cationic and anionic species were self‐assembled alternately on the surface of the P(AN‐co‐AA) membrane. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, AFM, and water contact angle measurements of the membrane surface were used to confirm the formation of the multilayer composites on the P(AN‐co‐AA). The permeabilities of water and macromolecules of different molecular weights were evaluated by a membrane filtration technique. The values of permeability strongly depended on the formation layer by layer of these ion composites on the base P(AN‐co‐AA). Through the measurement of the values of the contact angle of water, it was clear that surface nature of the base membrane treated by CTAC or TMAC and PAA dramatically changed. We concluded that such an electrostatic self‐assembly technique is useful for the preparation of multicomposite layers to modify the surface of base P(AN‐co‐AA) membranes. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An active and stable catalytic composite membrane (CCM), poly(vinyl alcohol)–poly(styrene sulfonic acid)/sodium alginate–poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA‐PSSA/SA‐PVA), was prepared to enhance the esterification of ethanol and propionic acid. The morphologies and crystal structures of the CCMs were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. The effects of catalytic layer thickness, mass ratio of PVA to PSSA, concentration of catalytic layer solution, ratio of reaction volume to membrane area, and molar ratio of propionic acid to ethanol were discussed. The pervaporation results showed that the flux of CCM increased from 118 to 320 g m?2 h?1 compared with the SA‐PVA membrane because of the close affinity and low resistance of PSSA to water. After crosslinking with 3‐aminopropylmethyldiethoxysilane, the CCMs had good catalytic activities. The acid conversion reached 92.8% at 75 °C in 12 h, and the stabilization of the CCM was greatly improved. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2018 , 135, 46514.  相似文献

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)‐based copolymers containing phosphonic acid moiety were synthesized for dehydration of aqueous pyridine solution. The in situ complex, formed between the vinylphosphonic acid (VP) moiety in the membrane and the pyridine in the feed, enhanced separation capacity of poly(acrylonitrile‐co‐vinylphosphonic acid) (PANVP) membranes. All the PAN‐based membranes containing phosphonic acid were very selective toward water. The pervaporation performances of PANVP membranes depended on the content of the phosphonic acid moiety in the membrane and operating temperature. The pervaporation separation of water/pyridine mixtures using PANVP membranes exhibited over 99.8% water concentration in permeate and flux of 4–120 g/m2/h depending on the content of vinylphosphonic acid and operating temperature. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Polyacrylamide‐grafted sodium alginate (PAAm‐g‐Na‐Alg) copolymeric membranes have been prepared, characterized, and used in the pervaporation separation of 10–80 mass % water‐containing tetrahydrofuran mixtures. Totally three membranes were prepared: (1) neat Na‐Alg with 10 mass % of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and 5 mass % of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), (2) 46 % grafted PAAm‐g‐Na‐Alg membrane containing 10 mass % of PEG and 5 mass % of PVA, and (3) 93 % grafted PAAm‐g‐Na‐Alg membrane containing 10 mass % of PEG and 5 mass % of PVA. Using the transport data, important parameters like permeation flux, selectivity, pervaporation separation index, swelling index, and diffusion coefficient have been calculated at 30°C. Diffusion coefficients were also calculated from sorption gravimetric data of water–tetrahydrofuran mixtures using Fick's equation. Arrhenius activation parameters for the transport processes were calculated for 10 mass % of water in the feed mixture using flux and diffusion data obtained at 30, 35, and 40°C. The separation selectivity of the membranes ranged between 216 and 591. The highest permeation flux of 0.677 kg/m2 h was observed for 93% grafted membrane at 80 mass % of water in the feed mixture. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Since pervaporation performance of ethanol‐permselective silicalite membrane, which is an aluminum‐free hydrophobic zeolite, in the separation of fermentation broths by yeast are negatively affected by succinic acid, the potential of pervaporation using silicone rubber‐coated silicalite membranes of ethanol fermentation broths, not containing succinic acid, by Zymomonas mobilis was investigated for the reliable production of concentrated bioethanol. In the separation of fermentation broths, the pervaporation performance was influenced by nutrients used for the preparation of fermentation broths. In the separation of a broth prepared with yeast extract, pervaporation performance was greatly compromised by accumulation of a substance(s) having an ultraviolet absorption maximum at approximately 260 nm not only in total flux, but also in permeate ethanol concentration compared to the separation of binary ethanol/water mixtures. When supplying a prepared broth with corn steep liquor without the accumulation of a substance(s) having an ultraviolet absorption maximum at approximately 260 nm, the permeate ethanol concentration did not decrease. Treating the prepared broth with activated carbon was effective in restraining the decrease in total flux. Pervaporation performance is also deteriorated by the adsorption of lactic acid contained in corn steep liquor onto the silicalite crystals. In the separation of ternary mixtures of ethanol/water/lactic acid, accomplished by adjusting the ternary mixtures to pH > 5, more than 90% of the permeation flux in the separation of binary ethanol/water mixtures was obtained, and the permeate ethanol concentration was comparable to that obtained in the separation of binary mixtures. For stably performing pervaporation, it is important to prepare ethanol fermentation broths by Zymomonas mobilis in which lactic acid concentration is as low as possible. Graft copolymers of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with polyacrylamide were prepared and membranes were fabricated at 48 and 93% grafting of acrylamide onto PVA. These membranes were used in the pervaporation separation of water/acetic acid mixtures at 25, 35, and 45°C. The permeation flux, separation selectivity, diffusion coefficient, and permeate concentration were determined. The highest separation selectivity of 23 for neat PVA at 25°C and the lowest value of 2.2 for 93% acrylamide‐grafted PVA membranes were observed. A permeation flux of 1.94 kg m?2 h?1 was found for the 93% grafted membrane at 90 mass % of water in the feed mixture. The diffusion coefficients in a water/acetic acid mixture had an effect on the membrane permselectivity. The Arrhenius equation was used to calculate the activation parameters for permeation as well as for the diffusion of water and of acetic acid. The activation energy values for the permeation flux varied from 97 to 28 kJ/mol. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 83: 244–258, 2002  相似文献

The pervaporation separation of water–isopropanol mixtures was carried out using carboxymethylated poly(vinyl alcohol) (CMPVA) composite membranes. Carboxymethylated PVA (CMPVA) was synthesized by reacting PVA with various concentrations of monochloroacetic acid. Substitution efficiency of the CMPVA ranged from 12–32%. The cross‐sectional structure of the composite membrane for pervaporation was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) exhibiting a 20‐μm active skin layer. Glass transition temperature of the CMPVA was in the range of 74–84°C, and decreased with increasing substitution efficiency. Degree of swelling and permeation flux for water–isopropanol in pervaporation increased with the substitution degree of carboxymethylation. CMPVA composite membrane, having 16% substitution efficiency, showed the following pervaporation performance; permeation flux of 831 g/m2 h and separation factor of 362 measured at 80°C and 85 wt % feed isopropanol concentration. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The structure and performance of modified poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF‐co‐HFP) ultra‐filtration membranes prepared from casting solutions with different concentrations of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) were investigated in this study. Membrane properties were studied in terms of membrane compaction, pure water flux (PWF), water content (WC), membrane hydraulic resistance ( R m), protein rejection, molecular weight cut‐off (MWCO), average pore size, and porosity. PWF, WC, and thermal stability of the blend membranes increased whereas the crystalline nature and mechanical strength of the blend membranes decreased when PVP additive concentration was increased. The contact angle (CA) decreased as the PVP concentration increased in the casting solution, which indicates that the hydro‐philicity of the surface increased upon addition of PVP. The average pore size and porosity of the PVdF‐co‐HFP membrane increased to 42.82 Å and 25.12%, respectively, when 7.5 wt% PVP was blended in the casting solution. The MWCO increased from 20 to 45 kDa with an increase in PVP concentration from 0 to 7.5 wt%. The protein separation study revealed that the rejection increased as the protein molecular weight increased. The PVdF‐co‐HFP/PVP blended membrane prepared from a 7.5 wt% PVP solution had a maximum flux recovery ratio of 74.3%, which explains its better antifouling properties as compared to the neat PVdF‐co‐HFP membrane. A series of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)–poly(vinyl alcoho) (PVA) semiinterpenetrating (SIPN) and interpenetrating (IPN) polymer network membranes were prepared by crosslinking PVA alone or by crosslinking both PVA and PAA. Glutaraldeyde and ethylene glycol were used as crosslinking agents for the PVA and PAA networks, respectively. The presence of PAA increases the permeability of the membranes while the presence of PVA improves their mechanical and film-forming properties. The mechanical properties of the membranes were investigated via tensile testing. These hydrophilic membranes are permselective to water from ethanol–water mixture and to ethanol from ethanol–benzene mixtures. The IPN membranes were employed for the former mixtures and the SPIN membranes for the latter, because the IPN ones provided too low permeation rates. The permeation rates and seperation factors were determined as functions of the IPN or SIPN composition, feed composition, and temperature. For the azeotropic ethanol–water mixture (95 wt % ethanol), the separation factor and permeation rate at 50°C of the PAA-PVA IPN membrane, containing 50 wt % PAA, were 50 and 260 g/m2h, respectively. For the ethanol–benzene mixture, the PAA–PVA SIPN membranes had separation factors between 1.4 and 1200 and permeation rates between 6 and 550 g/m2h, respectively, depending on the feed composition and temperature. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Asymmetric polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) membranes composed of chitosan membrane and absorbed poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were constructed. Absorption and therefore PEC formation were performed by bringing a chitosan membrane into contact with a PAA aqueous solution. The mean molecular weight (MW) of PAA employed was 5,000, 25,000 or 250,000. Absorption of PAA and asymmetry of PEC membranes were confirmed and evaluated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The absorption quantity of PAA decreased while the water selectivity of the PEC membrane increased with an increase in the MW of constituent PAA. In a pervaporation experiment, the water selectivity of the membrane was so high that no ethanol was detected by gas chromatography (GC). Such selectivity was attained by just a small quantity of PEC formation at the surface of the chitosan membrane. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 86: 265–271, 2002  相似文献
