3‐Allyloxy‐2‐hydroxyl‐propanesulfonic (AHPS) salt was synthesized and used as a hydrophilic comonomer for the methyl methacrylate (MMA) and n‐butyl acrylate (BA) emulsifier‐free emulsion copolymerization system to obtain latices of stable and high‐solid content. Properties of the latices, such as flow behavior, stability, and final diameter of the latex particles were studied. In addition, physical properties of the obtained copolymers, such as glass transition temperature (Tg), stress–strain behavior, and water resistance were investigated. With the addition of AHPS, the latices of stable and high‐solid content (as high as 60%) were prepared. Flow of the latices follows the law of the Bingham body. The final diameter of the latex particles is 0.3–0.5 μm in diameter, which is larger than that of the conventional latex particles and decreases with the increase of AHPS and potassium persulfate (KPS) concentration. All the copolymers are atactic polymers, showed as single Tg on dynamic mechanical analysis spectrum. Compared with the copolymers that were prepared by surfactant emulsion polymerization, tensile strength, as well as water resistance is greatly improved. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. With monodispersed poly(methyl methacrylate/n‐butyl acrylate/acrylic acid) [P(MMA/BA/AA)] seeded latex with a particle size of 485 nm and a solid content of 50 wt % as a medium, a series of stable P(MMA/BA/AA)/poly(styrene/acrylic acid) composite latexes with a high solid content (70 wt %) and low viscosities (500–1000 mPa · s when the shear rate was 21 s?1) was prepared in situ via simple two‐step semicontinuous monomer adding technology. The coagulum ratio of polymerization was about 0.05 wt %. The particle size distribution of such latexes was bimodal, in which the large particle was about 589 nm and the small one was about 80 nm. The latexes combined good mechanical properties with good film‐forming properties. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the corresponding latex film had a two‐phase structure. The morphology of the latex film was characterized with atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 1815–1825, 2007  相似文献

Heterogeneous latexes were prepared by a semicontinuous seeded emulsion polymerization process under monomer starved conditions at 80 °C using potassium persulfate as the initiator and sodium dodecyl sulfate as the emulsifier. Poly(butyl acrylate) latexes were used as seeds. The second‐stage polymer was poly(styrene‐co‐methyl methacrylate). By varying the amounts of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the second‐stage copolymer, the polarity of the copolymer phase could be controlled. Phase separation towards the thermodynamic equilibrium morphology was accelerated either by ageing the composite latex at 80 °C or by adding a chain‐transfer agent during polymerization. The morphologies of the latex particles were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology distributions of latex particles were described by a statistical method. It was found that the latex particles displayed different equilibrium morphologies depending on the composition of the second‐stage copolymers. This series of equilibrium morphologies of [poly(butyl acrylate)/poly(styrene‐co‐methyl methacrylate)] (PBA/P(St‐co‐MMA)) system provides experimental verification for quantitative simulation. Under limiting conditions, the equilibrium morphologies of PBA/P(St‐co‐MMA) were predicted according to the minimum surface free energy change principle. The particle morphology observed by TEM was in good agreement with the predictions of the thermodynamic model. Therefore, the morphology theory for homopolymer/homopolymer composite systems was extended to homopolymer/copolymer systems. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Bis(1H, 1H, 2H, 2H‐perfluoro‐octyl)methylenesuccinate (FOM)/ethyl acrylate (EA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA) copolymer (FOME) latexes, FOM/butyl acrylate (BA)/MMA copolymer (FOMB) latexes, and FOM/octyl acrylate (OA)/MMA copolymer (FOMO) latexes were synthesized by continuous emulsion polymerization. Solution polymerization was also carried out to prepare FOMB. The influences of fluorine content and curing conditions on the surface properties of polymer films were discussed. The water and oil repellency of cotton fabrics treated with the FOM copolymers was better than that of conventional poly(fluoroalkyl acrylate)s containing the same fluorinated chain. The polymer films or the treated fabrics were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, x‐ray photoelectron spectrometry, and wide angle x‐ray diffraction. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Using a two‐stage emulsion polymerization method, a series of poly(methyl methacrylate‐acrylonitrile)/poly(ethyl acrylate‐n‐butyl acrylate) [P(MMA‐AN)/P(EA‐nBA)] latex interpenetrating polymer networks (LIPNs) were synthesized by varying AN content, ratio of network I/network II, crosslinker content, and introducing chain transfer agent. The damping properties of the LIPNs were investigated using a Rheovibron Viscoelastometer. The results indicates that a suitable content of AN can improve the damping properties of the LIPNs. Three kinds of fillers were incorporated into the LPINs, respectively, to measure the change in the damping properties. Mica and TiO2 both increased the damping properties of the LIPNs over the wide temperature range. For TiO2‐filled LIPNs, it was observed that the tan δ values exceeded 0.4 over 112.6°C temperature range from −50 to 72.6°C. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Monodispersed crosslinked cationic poly(4‐vinylpyridine‐co‐butyl acrylate) [P(4VP‐BA)] seed latexes were prepared by soapless emulsion polymerization, using 2,2′‐azobismethyl(propionamidine)dihydrochloride (V50) as an initiator and divinylbenzene (DVB) or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a crosslinker. The optimum condition to obtain monodispersed stable latex was investigated. It was found that the colloidal stability of the P4VP latex can be improved by adding an adequate amount of BA (BA/4VP = 1/4, w/w), and adopting a semicontinuous monomer feed mode. Subsequently, poly(4‐vinylpyridine‐co‐butyl acrylate)/Poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) [P(4VP‐BA)/P(ST‐BA)] composite microspheres were synthesized by seeded polymerization, using the above latex as a seed and a mixture of ST and BA as the second‐stage monomers. The effects of the type of crosslinker, the degree of crosslinking, and the initiators (AIBN and V50) on the morphology of final composite particles are discussed in detail. It was found that P(4VP‐BA)/P(ST‐BA) composite microspheres were always surrounded by a PST‐rich shell when V50 was used as initiator, while sandwich‐like or popcorn‐like composite particles were produced when AIBN was employed. This is because the polarity of the polymer chains with AIBN fragments is lower than for the polymer with V50 fragments, hence leading to higher interfacial tension between the second‐stage PST‐rich polymer and the aqueous phase, and between PST‐rich polymer and P4VP‐rich seed polymer. As a result, the seed cannot be engulfed by the PST‐rich polymer. Furthermore, the decrease of Tg of the second‐stage polymer promoted phase separation between the seeds and the PST‐rich polymer: sandwich‐like particles formed more preferably than popcorn‐like particles. It is important knowledge that various morphologies different from PST‐rich core/P4VP‐rich shell morphology, can be obtained only by changing the initiator, considering P4VP is much more hydrophilic than PST. The zeta potential of composite particles initiated by AIBN in seeded polymerization shifted from a positive to a negative charge. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Core–shell structured particles, which comprise the rubbery core and glassy layers, were prepared by emulsifier‐free emulsion polymerization of poly(n‐butyl acrylate/methyl methacrylate)/polystyrene [P(n‐BA/MMA)/PS]. The particle diameter was about 0.22 μm, and the rubbery core was uncrosslinked and lightly crosslinked, respectively. The smaller core–shell structured particle–toughened PS blends were investigated in detail. The dynamic mechanical behavior and observation by scanning electron microscopy of the modified blend system with core–shell structured particles indicated good compatibility between PS and the particles, which is the necessary qualification for an effective toughening modifier. Notched‐impact strength and related mechanical properties were measured for further evaluation of the toughening efficiency. The notched‐impact strength of the toughened PS blends with uncrosslinked particles reached almost sixfold higher than that of the untoughened PS when 15 phr of the core–shell structured particles was added. For the crosslinked particles the toughening effect for PS was not obvious. The toughening mechanism for these smaller particles also is discussed in this article. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Conductive polymer particles, polyaniline (PANI)‐coated poly(methyl methacrylate–butyl acrylate–acrylic acid) [P(MMA–BA–AA)] nanoparticles, were prepared. The P(MMA–BA–AA)/PANI core–shell complex particles were synthesized with a two‐step miniemulsion polymerization method with P(MMA–BA–AA) as the core and PANI as the shell. The first step was to prepare the P(MMA–BA–AA) latex particles as the core via miniemulsion polymerization and then to prepare the P(MMA–BA–AA)/PANI core–shell particles. The aniline monomer was added to the mixture of water and core nanoparticles. The aniline monomer could be attracted near the outer surface of the core particles. The polymerization of aniline was started under the action of ammonium persulfate (APS). The final product was the desired core–shell nanoparticles. The morphology of the P(MMA–BA–AA) and P(MMA–BA–AA)/PANI particles was characterized with transmission electron microscopy. The core–shell structure of the P(MMA–BA–AA)/PANI composites was further determined by Fourier transform spectroscopy and ultraviolet–visible measurements. The conductive flakes made from the core–shell latexes were prepared, and the electrical conductivities of the flakes were studied. The highest conductivity of the P(MMA–BA–AA)/PANI pellets was 2.05 S/cm. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

The butyl acrylate (BA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA), and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) composite copolymer latex was synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization technique taking poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) latex as the seed. Four series of experiments were carried out by varying the ratio of BA : MMA (w/w) (i.e. 3.1 : 1, 2.3 : 1, 1.8 : 1, and 1.5 : 1) and in each series GMA content was varied from 1 to 5% (w/w). The structural properties of the copolymer were analyzed by FTIR, 1H‐, and 13C‐NMR. Morphological characterization was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In all the experiments, monomer conversion was ~99% and final copolymer composition was similar to that of feed composition. The incorporation of GMA into the copolymer chain was confirmed by 13C‐NMR. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the copolymer latex obtained from the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) curve was comparable to the values calculated theoretically. With increase in GMA content, particles having core‐shell morphology were obtained, and there was a decrease in the particle size as we go from 2–5% (w/w) of GMA. The adhesive strength of the latexes was found to be dependent on the monomer composition. With increase in BA : MMA ratio, the tackiness of the film increased while with its decrease the hardness of the film increased. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Microcapsules based on a phase changing paraffin core and modified titanium dioxide–poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate) [P(MMA‐co‐BA)] hybrid shell were prepared via a Pickering emulsion method in this study. The microcapsules exhibit an irregularly spherical morphology with the size range of 3–24 µm. The addition of BA can enhance the toughness of the brittle polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) and improve the thermal reliability of the phase change microcapsules. The ratio of BA/MMA is in the range of 0.09–0.14, and the ratio of the monomer/paraffin is varied from 0.45 to 0.60. These microcapsules exhibit a well‐defined morphology and good thermal stability. The actual core content of the microcapsules reaches 36.09%, with an encapsulation efficiency of 73.07%. Furthermore, the prepared microcapsules present the high thermal reliability for latent‐heat storage and release after 2000 thermal cycles. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. In this study stable latexes of butyl acrylate (BA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA)/diacetone acrylamide (DAAM) copolymers and BA/MMA/vinyl neo-decanoate (VeoVa-10)/DAAM copolymers were synthesized by a modified semi-continuous microemulsion copolymerization. Ammonium persulfate was used as initiator and a redox system for post-polymerization to reduce the free monomers content. Methacrylic acid (MMA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylic acid (AA) and various “green” industrial anionic, non-ionic and anionic polymerizable surfactants free of alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEO free) were tested as a stabilizing system. The resulting latexes, their corresponding self-1K crosslinkable binder using the adipic acid (ADH) dihydrazide as crosslinking agent and their films were characterized with rotational viscometer, dynamic light scattering, gloss, dynamic mechanical analysis, minimum film forming temperature (MFFT), water resistance and swelling in methyl ethyl ketone measurements. The experiments showed that BA\MMA\VEOVA-10\DAAM latexes prepared with methacrylic acid and a polymerizable surfactant showed zero coagulation during polymerization. Their corresponding 1K crosslinkable binder with ADH were stable over 6 months storage time and showed good all around properties that makes them suitable for use in friendly to the environment coatings.  相似文献

In the past work, the shear resistance of pure poly(n‐butyl acrylate) was low, even incorporation of inorganic filler, silica in the composition. It is well‐known that the copolymerization of n‐butyl acrylate (BA) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) will increase the glass transition temperature, and enhance the shear resistance of acrylic polymers. In the current work, the preparation of a series of acrylic water‐borne pressure‐sensitive adhesives (PSAs) with the controlled composition and structure for the copolymerization of BA and acrylic acid (AA) with different MMA contents, poly(BA‐co‐MMA‐co‐AA) was reported and its effects on adhesive properties of the latices were investigated. The latices of poly(BA‐co‐MMA‐co‐AA) were prepared at a solid content of 50% by two‐stage sequential emulsion polymerization, and this process consisted of a batch seed stage giving a particle diameter of 111 nm, which was then grown by the semicontinuous addition of monomers to final diameter of 303 nm. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) was used to monitor the particle diameters and proved that no new nucleation occurred during the growth stage. Copolymerization of BA with MMA raised the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the soft acrylic polymers, and had the effect of improving shear resistance, while the loop tack and peel adhesion kept relatively high. The relationship between pressure‐sensitive properties and molecular parameters, such as gel content and molecular weight, was evaluated. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Waterborne polyacrylate/poly(silicone‐co‐acrylate) emulsions were synthesized to develop coated fertilizers. The effects of the n‐butyl acrylate (BA)/methyl methacrylate (MMA) ratio, vinyltriethoxysilane, and synthesis method on the water resistance, glass‐transition temperature, mechanical properties, and nutrient‐release profiles were investigated. The results show that miniemulsion polymerization with a BA/MMA ratio of 55:45 was the most suitable for slow nutrient‐release applications. Under these conditions, the preliminary solubility rate of the nutrient was about 3%, and the 30‐day cumulative nutrient release was 15% at 25°C. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. A core–shell nanosilica (nano‐SiO2)/fluorinated acrylic copolymer latex, where nano‐SiO2 served as the core and a copolymer of butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and 2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) served as the shell, was synthesized in this study by seed emulsion polymerization. The compatibility between the core and shell was enhanced by the introduction of vinyl trimethoxysilane on the surface of nano‐SiO2. The morphology and particle size of the nano‐SiO2/poly(methyl methacrylate–butyl acrylate–2,2,2‐trifluoroethyl methacrylate) [P(MMA–BA–TFEMA)] core–shell latex were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. The properties and surface energy of films formed by the nano‐SiO2/P(MMA–BA–TFEMA) latex were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy/energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, and static contact angle measurement. The analyzed results indicate that the nano‐SiO2/P(MMA–BA–TFEMA) latex presented uniform spherical core–shell particles about 45 nm in diameter. Favorable characteristics in the latex film and the lowest surface energy were obtained with 30 wt % TFEMA; this was due to the optimal migration of fluorine to the surface during film formation. The mechanical properties of the films were significantly improved by 1.0–1.5 wt % modified nano‐SiO2. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

Poly(butyl acrylate–methyl methacrylate) [P(BA–MMA]/polyaniline (PANI) core–shell complex particles were synthesized with a two‐step emulsion polymerization method with P(BA–MMA) as the core and PANI as the shell. The first step was to prepare P(BA–MMA) latex particles as the core via soapless emulsion polymerization. The second step was to prepare P(BA–MMA)/PANI core–shell particles. Sodium dodecyl sulfate was fed into the P(BA–MMA) emulsion as a surfactant, and this was followed by the addition of the aniline monomer. A bilayer structure of the surfactant over the surfaces of the core particles was desired so that the aniline monomer could be attracted near the outer surface of the core particles. In some cases, dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid was added after 2 h when the polymerization of aniline was started. The final product was the desired core–shell particles. The morphology of P(BA–MMA) and P(BA–MMA)/PANI particles was observed with transmission electron microscopy. The thermal properties were studied with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, conductive films made from the core–shell latexes were prepared, and the electrical conductivities of the films were studied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers with poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA) backbones and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) macromonomer side chains are used as compatibilizing agents for PBA/PMMA composite latexes. The composite latexes are prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the presence of PBA particles. Graft copolymers were already incorporated into the PBA particles prior to using these particles as seed via miniemulsion (co)polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA) in the presence of the macromonomers. Comparison between size averages of composite and seed particles indicates no secondary nucleation of MMA during seeded emulsion polymerization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of composite particles show the dependence of particle morphologies with the amount of macromonomer (i.e., mole ratio of macromonomer to BA and molecular weight of macromonomer) in seed latex. The more uniform coverage with the higher amount of macromonomer suggests that graft copolymers decrease the interfacial tension between core and shell layers in the composite particles. Dynamic mechanical analysis of composite latex films indicates the existence of an interphase region between PBA and PMMA. The dynamic mechanical properties of these films are related to the morphology of the composite particles, the arrangement of phases in the films, and the volume of the interphase polymer. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Two latices—the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)/poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid) system (PA latex) and the PDMS/poly(vinyl acetate‐co‐butyl acrylate) system (PB latex)—were prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization, and PA/PB complex latices were obtained through the interparticle complexation of the PA latex with the PB latex. In addition, for the further study of the interparticle complexation of the PA latex with the PB latex, copolymer latices [PDMS/methyl methacrylate‐co‐butyl acrylate‐co‐vinyl acetate‐co‐methacrylic acid) (PC)] were prepared according to the monomer recipe of the complex latices and the polymerization process of the component latices. The properties of the obtained polymer latices and complex latices were investigated with surface‐tension, contact‐angle, and viscosity measurements. The mechanical properties of the coatings obtained from the latices were investigated with tensile‐strength measurements. The results showed that, in comparison with the two component latices (PA latex and PB latex) and the corresponding copolymer latices (PC latices), the PA/PB complex latices had lower surface tension, lower viscosities, and better wettability to different substrates. The tensile strengths of the coatings obtained from the complex latices were higher than the tensile strengths of the coatings from the two component latices and copolymer latices. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A latex interpenetrating polymer network (LIPN), consisting of poly(n‐butyl acrylate), poly(n‐butyl acrylate‐co‐ethylhexyl acrylate), and poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐ethyl acrylate) and labeled PBEM, with 1,4‐butanediol diacrylate as a crosslinking agent was synthesized by three‐stage emulsion polymerization. The initial poly(n‐butyl acrylate) latex was agglomerated by a polymer latex containing an acrylic acid residue and then was encapsulated by poly(n‐butyl acrylate‐co‐ethylhexyl acrylate) and poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐ethyl acrylate). A polyblend of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and PBEM was prepared through the blending of PVC and PBEM. The morphology and properties of the polyblend were studied. The experimental results showed that the processability and impact resistance of PVC could be enhanced considerably by the blending of 6–10 phr PBEM. This three‐stage LIPN PBEM is a promising modifier for manufacturing rigid PVC. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 1168–1173, 2004  相似文献

In this study, the copolymers with different ratios of AA(acrylic acid)–MMA(methyl methacrylate)–BA (butyl acrylate) are synthesized to prepare pervaporation membrane for the separation of methanol/MTBE (methyl tert‐butyl ether)/C5 mixtures. Swelling experiment of these copolymers in pure methanol, MTBE, C5, and methanol/MTBE mixtures are carried out, respectively. The results show that there is a strong interaction between MTBE and copolymer with high content of BA. The pervaporation characteristics of the membranes prepared with different copolymer are measured in the separation of methanol/MTBE mixture. The experimental results show that the pervaporation ability changes with swelling degree in the same direction. The copolymers are characterized by FTIR. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
