The authors explore mentoring relationships in which one or both members are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). "The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelationships among ethnocentrism-authoritarianism in children, the child's willingness to be punitive, and the punitiveness of the parent as the child sees it. Eye movements accompanying daydreaming, visual imagery, and thought suppression.

Relationship between oculometer activity during the waking state and internally produced cognitive processes such as daydreaming and visual imagery were studied by means of continuous electro-oculograms. 24 female college students served as Ss. Eye movements and blinks were more frequent following instructions to engage in active rather than passive thinking; more frequent following instructions to suppress than to generate a wish. Greater ocular activity was observed under instructions to imagine moving than to imagine static visual imagery, the difference holding for both eyes open and closed conditions. Self-handicapping, excuse making, and counterfactual thinking: Consequences for self-esteem and future motivation.

Researchers interested in counterfactual thinking have often found that upward counterfactual thoughts lead to increased motivation to improve in the future, although at the cost of increased negative affect. The present studies suggest that because upward counterfactual thoughts indicate reasons for a poor performance, they can also serve as excuses. In this case, upward counterfactual thoughts should result in more positive self-esteem and reduced future motivation. Five studies demonstrated these effects in the context of self-handicapping. First, upward counterfactual thinking was increased in the presence of a self-handicap. Second, upward counterfactual thoughts indicating the presence of a self-handicap protected self-esteem following failure. Finally, upward counterfactual thoughts that protect self-esteem reduced preparation for a subsequent performance as well as performance itself. These findings suggest that the consequences of upward counterfactuals for affect and motivation are moderated by the goals of the individual as well as the content of the thoughts. Poughkeepsie Bridge: Its Birth, Abandonment, and Rebirth

When opened the Poughkeepsie Bridge incorporated the longest span—548 ft—cantilever in the world; the longest simple span, 525 ft; and its overall length, 6,767 ft, was for a short time the longest bridge in the world. Between 1871 and 1889, its opening, some of the leading engineers and railroad men had been involved in its planning and design including three future presidents of ASCE. Construction is currently under way to convert the bridge to a pedestrian/bicycle pathway across the Hudson River.
