Structural adhesives are being widely adopted in aerospace and automobile industries. However, in many cases, hostile environments cause non-ignorable degradation in joints mechanical performance. In this work, a combined experimental–numerical approach was developed to characterise the effect of cyclic-temperature environment on adhesively bonded joints. The environmental degradation factor, Deg, was introduced into a cohesive zone model to evaluate the degradation process in the adhesive layer caused by the cyclic-temperature environment and the stress states in adhesive layer before and after temperature exposure treatment were investigated. Carefully designed experimental tests were carried out to validate the simulation results and help the numerical procedure to predict joint mechanical behaviour after environmental exposure. A response surface method was utilised to provide a better visualisation on the relationship between selected factors and response. Finally, the scanning electron microscopy was carried out to investigate the micro fracture mechanisms of adhesively bonded joints.  相似文献

One parameter that influences adhesively bonded joints performance is the adherend material and its effect should be taken into consideration in the design of adhesive joints. In this work, the effect of material on the mechanical behaviour of adhesive joints was investigated experimentally and numerically by single lap joints (SLJs) with different adherend materials (high strength steel, low strength steel and composite). The adhesives selected were two new modern tough structural adhesives used in the automotive industry. It was found that, for relatively short overlaps in SLJs bonded with structural modern tough adhesives, failure is dominated by adhesive global yielding and the influence of material on joint strength is not significant. For larger overlaps, the failure is not anymore due to global yielding and the effect of material becomes more important. Moreover, it was possible to evaluate which adhesive is more suited for each material.  相似文献

The strength of stainless-steel joints bonded with two epoxy adhesives was investigated. The experimental programme included tests on single-lap and butt joints, as well as thick-adherend and napkin ring shear tests. Results suggested that the tensile and shear strengths of the epoxy adhesives were quite similar. However, finite element (FE) analyses raised doubts on the true adhesive strengths, due to the complex stress state in joint tests and pressure-dependent adhesive behaviour. In spite of some uncertainties, FE analyses showed that failure could be fairly well predicted by a maximum shear strain criterion.  相似文献

Composites have been used extensively in various engineering applications including automotive, aerospace, and building industries. Hybrid composites made from two or more different reinforcements show enhanced mechanical properties required for advanced engineering applications. Several issues in composites were resolved during the last few years through the development of new materials, new methods and models for hybrid joints. Many components in automobile are joined together either by permanent or temporary fastener such as rivets, welding joint and adhesively bonded joints. Increasing use of bonded structures is envisaged for reducing fastener count and riveted joints and there by drastically reducing assembly cost. Adhesive bonding has been applied successfully in many technologies. In this paper, scientific work on adhesively bonded composites and hybrid composites are reviewed and discussed. Several parameters such as surface treatment, joint configuration, material properties, geometric parameters, failure modes, etc. that affect the performance of adhesive bonded joints are discussed. Environmental factors like pre-bond moisture and temperature, method of adhesive application are also cited in detail. A specific case of adhesive joints in hybrid bonded-bolted joints is elaborated. As new applications are expanding in the field of composites joining and adhesive joints, it is imperative to use information on multiple adhesives and their behaviour in different environmental conditions to develop improved adhesive joint structure in mechanical applications.  相似文献

This paper outlines an experimental study on the shear behaviour of structural silicone adhesively bonded steel-glass orthogonal lap joints. In the combination of steel plate and glass panel to form a hybrid structural glazing system, bonded joints with structural silicones can provide certain flexibility which relieves stress peaks at critical points of glass panel. The cohesive failure and its related fracture pattern of test joints with varied geometries of adhesives are examined experimentally. It is shown that the presence of two failure modes as discrete voids and macro cracks is closely related to the adhesive thickness. The effects of geometric parameters of adhesives on the joint shear strength are examined. It is demonstrated that the joint shear strengths are increased with increased individual overlap length, reduced adhesive thickness or increased adhesive width while the shear deformation corresponding to maximum shear force is mostly influenced by adhesive thickness. Mechanical contributions for those effects are analyzed accordingly. Finally, an analytical formula allowing for the equilibrium of strain and force on the adhesive and adherend is proposed for the analysis of shear strength. It is demonstrated that calculated normalized shear force ratios predicted by proposed formula agree well with those from experimental results.  相似文献

The single lap joint is the most used test in order to analyse the behaviour of an adhesive in an assembly as on one hand, the manufacturing of such specimens is quite easy, and on the other hand they require only a classic tensile testing machine. However, such specimens are associated with complex loading of the adhesive, i.e. non-uniform shear stress along the overlap length, quite large peel stress at the two ends of the overlap and significant edge effects associated with geometrical and material parameters. In addition, the stress concentrations can contribute to fracture initiation in the adhesive joints and thus can lead to an incorrect analysis of the adhesive behaviour. Therefore, understanding the stress distribution in an adhesive joint can lead to improvements in adhesively bonded assemblies. The first part of this paper presents the influence of edge effects on the stress concentrations in single lap joints under elastic assumption of the material and using a pressure-dependent elastic limit of the adhesive. In the second part, some usual geometries, proposed in the literature about stress limitation, are compared with respect to the maximum load transmitted by single lap joint. The last part presents some geometries, which significantly limit the influence of edge effects and are more appropriate for analysing the behaviour of the adhesive.  相似文献

A broad finite element study was carried out to understand the stress fields and stress intensity factors behavior of cracks in adhesively bonded double-lap joints, which are representative of loading in real aerospace structures. The interaction integral method and fundamental relationships in fracture mechanics were used to determine the mixed-mode stress intensity factors and associated strain energy release rates for various cases of interest. The numerical analyses of bonded joints were also studied for various kinds of adhesives and adherends materials, joint configurations, and thickness of adhesive and different crack lengths. The finite element results obtained show that the patch materials of low stiffness, low adhesive moduli and low tapering angles are desirable for a strong double-lap joint. In the double-lap joint, the shearing-mode stress intensity factor is always larger than that of the opening-mode and both shearing and opening mode stress intensity factors increase as the crack length increases, but their amplitudes are not sensitive to adhesive thickness. Results are discussed in terms of their relationship to adhesively bonded joints design and can be used in the development of approaches aimed at using adhesive bonding and extending the lives of adhesively bonded repairs for aerospace structures.  相似文献

The mechanical behaviour of bonded composite joints depends on several factors, such as the strength of the composite–adhesive interface, the strength of the adhesive and the strength of the composite itself. In this regard, a finite element model was developed using a combined interface–adhesive damage approach. A cohesive zone model is used to represent the composite–adhesive interface and a continuum damage model for the adhesive bondline. The influence of the composite–adhesive interfacial adhesion and the strength of the adhesive on the performance of a bonded composite single-lap joint was investigated numerically. A Taguchi analysis was conducted to rank the influence of material parameters on the static behaviour of the joint. It was found that the composite–adhesive interfacial fracture energy and the mechanical properties of the adhesive predominantly govern the static performance of the joints. A parametric study was performed by varying the most important material parameters, and a response surface equation is proposed to predict the joint strength. It is shown that the influence of experimental parameter variations, e.g. variation in adhesive curing and surface preparation conditions, can be numerically accommodated to investigate the static behaviour of bonded composite joints by combining finite element and statistical techniques. The methods presented could be used by practicing engineers to describe the failure envelope of adhesively bonded composite joints.  相似文献

In this study, our previous experimental study was extended applying the exponential Drucker-Prager (EDP) yield criterion to define the numerical failure loads for mono and bi-adhesive single lap joints (SLJs) [Öz and Özer, 2016]. Bi-adhesive (or hybrid adhesive) joint is an alternative stress-reduction technique for adhesively bonded lap joints. The joints have two adhesives with different moduli in the overlap region. Non-linear finite element analyses were carried out for mono and bi-adhesive joints implementing the EDP material model. Distributions of EDP maximum principal stress, equivalent stress and shear stress were obtained along the middle of the adhesive thickness. Numerical failure loads were compared with our previous experimental failure loads. In addition, hydrostatic stress and equivalent plastic strain distributions for these joints under the failure loading were obtained. The general results show that experimental and numerical failure loads were in a good agreement. As a result, when bond-length ratios are selected properly and appropriate adhesives are used along the overlap length, the strength of bi-adhesive joints, compared to mono-adhesive joints, was found to increase considerably.  相似文献

This work deals with an experimental investigation on the effect of mechanical surface treatments of adhesive bonded joints. The behaviour of an adhesively bonded joint can be considered good if cohesive failure is achieved, while when interfacial failure occurs the performances are normally much worse. A key parameter which drives the failure type is the surface treatment applied to the adherends. This work analyzes, by means of a structured experimental campaign, which surface mechanical treatment gives the best performance. The design of the experimental approach used involves different materials, joint geometries, and surface treatments. The results are investigated in terms of force, energy, and stresses in the joints and the performance of the several mechanical treatments tested is assessed, showing that a simple correlation with the surface roughness is not sufficient to predict the best joint performances. The reliable results obtained prove that sandpapering or sandblasting the adherends gives a strong improvement in terms of performance and leads to a higher probability of cohesive failure.  相似文献

Nowadays, the use of adhesive and adhesively bonded joints have been considerably appreciated in the industry due to the dramatic reduction in bonding strength, reduced stress concentration, rust prevention, uniform bonding of the bonding surface and a significant reduction in costs compared to other types of permanent joints such as welding. In this study, the effect of adhesive thickness on creep behaviour of a single lap adhesive joint with the aid of Abaqus FEM software is investigated. It should be noted that the two-layer and two-dimensional models are considered, in which their adhesive layer is made of a reinforced epoxy resin with 0.5% carbon fiber and the adherend layers are made of carbon steel plates, which is affected by tensile forces. Since the main purpose of this paper is to study the effect of adhesive thickness on the adhesive joints behaviour, the effects of the distribution of shear stress, effective stress and creep strain were studied in different thicknesses of the adhesive layer. The results show that by increasing the thickness, the stress and the creep strain decrease, and over time, the stress decreases and the creep behaviour of adhesives increases.  相似文献

Carton board packages are often adhesively bonded. The adhesive joint may fail due to cohesive fracture in the adhesive, interfacial fracture between the adhesive and one of the carton board surfaces, or cohesive fracture in the carton board. The failure may also be a combination of these failure modes. From previous studies, it is well known that the failure mechanism greatly impacts the integrity and mechanical behaviour of adhesive joints. To explore these matters, detailed experiments on adhesively bonded carton boards were performed using the Y-peel setup. By monitoring the joint at high magnification with a digital video camera during progressive loading, it was possible to link the mechanical behaviour of the adhesive joint to the fracture mechanisms involved in each case. It was found that the adhesive joint failures could be categorised into four main failure modes. The two (modes M1 and M2) failure modes with low toughness, i.e., low dissipative energy, failed by interfacial fracture with small permanent deformation in the adhesive and in the carton board. High dissipative energy modes (modes M3 and M4), however, involved multiple failures and final failure by delamination or tearing of the outermost carton board ply. It was found that the Y-peel equipment could be used as a tool to develop carton boards and hot melt adhesives in order to optimise the adhesive joint for certain package applications. From the force–elongation curve characteristics, it is possible to perceive when and how the adhesive joint may fail in a real package application.  相似文献

Rubber-modified epoxy adhesives are used widely as structural adhesive owing to their properties of high fracture toughness. In many cases, these adhesively bonded joints are exposed to cyclic loading. Generally, the rubber modification decreases the static and fatigue strength of bulk adhesive without flaw. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the effect of rubber-modification on the fatigue strength of adhesively bonded joints, where industrial adhesively bonded joints usually have combined stress condition of normal and shear stresses in the adhesive layer. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of rubber-modification on the fatigue strength under combined cyclic stress conditions. Adhesively bonded butt and scarf joints provide considerably uniform normal and shear stresses in the adhesive layer except in the vicinity of the free end, where normal to shear stress ratio of these joints can cover the stress combination ratio in the adhesive layers of most adhesively bonded joints in industrial applications.

In this study, to investigate the effect of rubber modification on fatigue strength with various combined stress conditions in the adhesive layers, fatigue tests were conducted for adhesively bonded butt and scarf joints bonded with rubber modified and unmodified epoxy adhesives, wherein damage evolution in the adhesive layer was evaluated by monitoring strain the adhesive layer and the stress triaxiality parameter was used for evaluating combined stress conditions in the adhesive layer. The main experimental results are as follows: S–N characteristics of these joints showed that the maximum principal stress at the endurance limit indicated nearly constant values independent of combined stress conditions, furthermore the maximum principal stress at the endurance limit for the unmodified adhesive were nearly equal to that for the rubber modified adhesive. From the damage evolution behavior, it was observed that the initiation of the damage evolution shifted to early stage of the fatigue life with decreasing stress triaxiality in the adhesive layer, and the rubber modification accelerated the damage evolution under low stress triaxiality conditions in the adhesive layer.  相似文献

Incorporation of additives into the adhesive layer in adhesively bonded joints can improve the stress distriution in the adhesive layer and increase adhesive toughness. In this paper, the geometric and material parameters of metal fibers utilized for strengthening adhesively bonded single lap joints under flexural loading were investigated by using experimental investigations and finite element modeling. According to the experimental results, incorporating metal fibers in the adhesive layer of a bonded joint can have a significant impact on the flexural load bearing of the joint. This was in relationship with the numerical results foreseeing enhanced stress distributions of the adhesive layer, when the metal fibers were added to the adhesive layer. Some important parameters in the design of metal fiber-reinforced adhesive joints include the volume fraction (the distance between the fibers and the fiber diameter), orientation, and mechanical properties of the fibers. It was concluded that the peak normal stresses in the adhesive layer can be reduced, and consequently the load bearing of the joint can be improved by reducing the distance between the fibers, increasing the fiber diameter and choosing a stiffer material for the fibers in the longitudinal direction.  相似文献

Adhesively bonded joints have been used extensively for many structural applications. However, one disadvantage usually limiting the service life of adhesive joints is the relatively low strength for peel loading, especially under dynamic cyclic loading such as impulsive or vibrational forces. Moreover, accurately predicting the fatigue life of bonded joints is still quite challenging. In this study, a combined experimental–numerical approach was developed to characterize the effect of the cyclic-vibration-peel (CVP) loading on adhesively bonded joints. A damage factor is introduced into the traction-separation response of the cohesive zone model (CZM) and a finite element damage model is developed to evaluate the degradation process in the adhesive layer. With this model, the adhesive layer stress states before and after being exposed to various CVP loading cycles are investigated, which reveals that the fatigue effect of the CVP loading starts first in the regions close to the edges of the adhesive layer. A good correlation is achieved when comparing the simulation results to the experimental data, which verifies the feasibility of using the proposed model to predict the fatigue life of adhesively bonded joints under the CVP type of loading.  相似文献

The use of relatively low modulus adhesive at the ends of overlap in a bi-adhesive bondline of a bonded joint can reduce the stress concentration significantly and, therefore, potentially lead to higher strength of the joint. This study presents the two-dimensional and three-dimensional nonlinear (geometric and material) finite element analyses of adhesively bonded single lap joints having modulus-graded bondline under monotonic loading conditions. The adhesives were modelled as an elasto-plastic multi-linear material, while the substrates were regarded as both linear elastic and bi-linear elasto-plastic material. The computational simulations have been performed to investigate the bondline behaviour by studying the stress and strain distributions both at the mid-plane as well as at the interface of the bondline. It has been observed that the static strength is higher for joints with bi-adhesive bondlines compared to those with single adhesives in bondline. Higher joint strength has also been observed for optimum bi-adhesive bondline ratio through parametric studies. Effects of load level, and bondline thickness on stress distribution in the bi-adhesive bondline have also been studied. 3D analysis results reveal the existence of complex multi-axial stress/strain state at the ends of the overlap in the bondline which cannot be observed in 2D plane strain analysis. About 1/3rd of the width of the joint from the free edge in the width direction has 3D stress state, especially in the compliant adhesive of the bondline. Magnitudes of longitudinal and lateral stress/strain components are comparable to peel stress/strain components. It has also been analytically shown that the in-plane global stiffness of the joint remains unaffected by modulus gradation of the bondline adhesive.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted on the strength of adhesively bonded steel joints, prepared epoxy and acrylic adhesives. At first, to obtain strength characteristics of these adhesives under uniform stress distributions in the adhesive layer, tensile tests for butt, scarf and torsional test for butt joints with thin-wall tube were conducted. Based on the above strength data, the fracture envelope in the normal stress-shear stress plane for the acrylic adhesive was compared with that for the epoxy adhesive. Furthermore, for the epoxy and acrylic adhesives, the effect of stress triaxiality parameter on the failure stress was also investigated. From those comparison, it was found that the effect of stress tri-axiality in the adhesive layer on the joint strength with the epoxy adhesive differed from that with the acrylic adhesive. Fracture toughness tests were then conducted under mode l loading using double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens with the epoxy and acrylic adhesives. The results of the fracture toughness tests revealed continuous crack propagation for the acrylic adhesive, whereas stick-slip type propagation for the epoxy one. Finally, lap shear tests were conducted using lap joints bonded by the epoxy and acrylic adhesives with several lap lengths. The results of the lap shear tests indicated that the shear strength with the epoxy adhesive rapidly decreases with increasing lap length, whereas the shear strength with the acrylic adhesive decreases gently with increasing the lap length.  相似文献

Calculated torque transmission capability of adhesively bonded tubular lap joints using linear elastic material properties is usually much less than the experimentally-determined one because the majority of the load transfer of the adhesively bonded joints is accomplished by the nonlinear behavior of rubber-toughened epoxy adhesives.

Although the adhesively bonded tubular double lap joint has better torque transmission capability and reliability than the single lap joint, the nonlinear analytic or numerical analysis for the adhesively bonded tubular double lap joint has not been performed because of numerical complications.

An iterative solution that includes the nonlinear shear behavior of the adhesive was derived using the analytic solution. Since the iterative solution can be obtained very quickly due to the simplicity of the algorithm, it is an attractive method of designing adhesively bonded tubular single and double lap joints.  相似文献
