Dr. Al-Tannir was formerly working as a student intern in the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health Division of Dental Health. He is currently the Dental Public Health Resident for the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Medical Center, Perry Point, Maryland and Clinical Instructor at the University of Maryland at Baltimore Dental School, Department of Oral Health Care Delivery. The purpose of this paper is to provide practicing dentists in West Virginia with an overview, understanding and appraisal of the Early and Periodic, Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment (EPSDT) dental program. EPSDT is one of the least understood and least publicized programs in the Department of Health and Human Resources and is the children's preventive health component of Medicaid. West Virginia can meet the oral health needs for its children by making dental services, both curative and preventive, more available through the EPSDT program. This program can be a principal means, if sufficiently utilized, of meeting the oral health care needs of West Virginia Children by minimizing financial and attitudinal barriers.  相似文献

As engineering surveying is highly concerned with its intensive involvement in the construction of roads and bridges, drainage systems, buildings, railways, and tunnels in civil engineering, the subject of engineering surveying is being offered by the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics to all undergraduate students who are taking the Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree Program in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Under the new outcome-based curriculum and work-integrated education requirements, the curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment for the subject are described here by answering the questions of “what are the goals and objectives of the curriculum,” “what should students learn,” and “how should it be learned, taught, and assessed.”  相似文献

The construction industry is a major player in the nation’s economy. The complex nature of the construction industry, coupled with the challenges of global competitiveness and changing regulatory requirements, has created the need for providing higher levels of education, experience, and training for construction professionals. An essential and integral component of the required education and training must be the research training of undergraduate civil and construction students, encouraging them to pursue advanced education and research careers in this area. With this in mind, the writer developed a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) summer program at Western Michigan University that focuses on construction engineering and management issues and problems. This construction-oriented undergraduate research training program is the first REU site in the United States to be funded by the National Science Foundation. This paper will describe the structure of the REU program, the types of activities undertaken by the REU participants, and the results of the program evaluation and assessment.  相似文献

Marilyn Schlitz is an anthropologist and director of research for the Institute of Noetic Sciences, where she develops and oversees research in three areas: emerging worldviews, inner mechanisms of the healing response, and extended human abilities. Before working for the Institute of Noetic Sciences, she was director of the Esalen Center for the Theory and Research Working Group on Direct Mental and Healing Interactions on Living Systems; a research associate in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Trinity University in Texas; an assistant research scientist at the Agricultural Research Station and Department of Rural Sociology at Texas A & M University; and a research associate and project director for the Mind Science Foundation. Dr Schlitz also has worked as a research consultant for the Stanford Research Institute and as a research fellow for the Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man at the Institute for Parapsychology. She has taught at many universities and colleges, including work as a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at Stanford, and as an instructor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Trinity University. In 1994 she received the Thomas Welton Stanford Psychical Research Fellowship. She received her doctoral degree in anthropology from the University of Texas in 1992 and her master's degree in behavioral and social sciences in 1986, also from the University of Texas. Dr Schlitz has published numerous papers and book chapters on the topic of parapsychology. She speaks nationally and is involved with many research projects exploring the relationship between consciousness and the outer world.  相似文献

How do we begin to expand our civilization to the Moon? What are the technical issues that infrastructural engineers, in particular, must address? This paper has the goal of introducing this fascinating area of structural mechanics, design, and construction. Published work of the past several decades about lunar bases is summarized. Additional emphasis is placed on issues related to regolith mechanics and robotic construction. Although many hundreds of papers have been written on these subjects, and only a few tens of these have been referred to here, it is believed that a representative view has been created. This summary includes environmental issues, a classification of structural types being considered for the Moon, and some possible usage of in situ resources for lunar construction. An appendix provides, in tabular form, an overview of structural types and their lunar applications and technology drivers.  相似文献

Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly, the University of Missouri-Rolla) began a Bachelor of Science degree program in architectural engineering in the fall of 2002. The 4-year academic program’s curriculum at Missouri S&T requires the students to complete 128 semester credit hours during a period of eight semesters, with options for technical electives in one of four focus areas: structural engineering, construction engineering and project management, environmental systems for buildings, and construction materials. This paper presents the architectural engineering curriculum at Missouri S&T. It discusses the objectives of the curriculum, the constraints upon its structure, along with challenges that faced the establishment of an architectural engineering program.  相似文献

Construction education is not new. It was a part of the practical aspects of many early civil engineering degree programs. As early as the 1920's, specializations in construction engineering were found in a few civil engineering programs, paralleling structural engineering and other areas. However, the gradual need for more specialization than could normally be integrated in the civil engineering degree eventually led to the formation of some construction specialty degree undergraduate programs, particularly after World War II. This paper documents the historical evolution of construction education, promotes construction as a stand-alone professional engineering discipline, provides information for schools that are interested in starting an undergraduate construction engineering and management (CEM) degree program, and discusses the engineering accreditation aspects of the CEM curriculum and the role of the construction industry in the CEM curriculum development.  相似文献

Partnering is a technique that has become the construction industry's application of total quality management and enjoys widespread use throughout the industry. This paper details the results of a statistical analysis of over 400 Texas Department of Transportation construction projects worth a total investment of nearly $2.1 billion. Half the projects were completed under partnering agreements. After comparing the two groups of projects, the paper concludes that partnering promises to furnish a means to control the two prime project performance indicators—cost growth and time growth. Additionally, in a large construction program the continuous application of partnering will result in improved project performance across the entire program.  相似文献

The Master Builder Program is a practice-oriented master of engineering degree program that has been developed and implemented by the faculty in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The central theme of the Master Builder Program is building process integration, which is a systems or integrated approach to the planning, design, construction, and management of constructed facilities. Building process integration was chosen as a strategic plan to focus on one segment of the building industry, to provide a unique educational product, to exhibit the strengths of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and to distinguish the program from practice-oriented graduate degree programs that have been established at competing colleges and universities. The 30-credit-hour curriculum includes two required courses, a capstone project, and electives. Faculty collaboration and industrial participation are critical elements of the program.  相似文献

Between 2001 and 2002, a 6.4-m (21.0-ft) diameter corrugated steel pipe culvert was erected and buried under a 22.9-m (75.0-ft) highway embankment fill in Meigs County, Ohio. This steel pipe culvert was the first of its kind to be constructed in the southeastern region of Ohio. The culvert structure was selected by the Ohio Department of Transportation over an alternative of a 5 million conventional bridge structure, because it would cost about $3.4 million less. The field performance of the culvert was monitored by measuring the pressure distribution around the pipe, as well as the deflections of the pipe culvert during and after construction. The culvert study also included comparing measured field performance with numerical predictions given by the finite-element computer program CANDE-89. CANDE-89 with the slotted joint option had a limited ability to simulate the actual field behavior of the large-diameter multiplate culvert structure, especially in the earlier stages of construction.  相似文献

The philosophy behind quality, environmental, and safety (QES) management systems is a concept that has been accepted by various contractors. Furthermore, a process has been developed insuring that the output produced conforms to customer satisfaction without violating any environmental, health, and safety rules and regulations. An effective QES program not only assures a quality product but also reduces costs, and enhances productivity. It is a top down process, i.e., top management together with line management and other employees develop the program and motivate all personnel to accept the process. Important functions to take under consideration are (1) explain and clarify the quality, environmental, and safety performance expected; (2) involve employees in decision-making and problem solving; (3) describe the consequences of poor quality and unsafe/unhealthy work conditions; (4) establish QES goals and provide feedback on performance; (5) provide a self-monitoring system; and (6) recognize and reinforce good performance and develop a reward system. This paper presents a discussion of the development of a portion of a QES management system which has been employed by a medium to large size construction company. In particular, Items 1–4, listed above, are described in detail.  相似文献

The baccalaureate and masters programs in architectural engineering at the University of Miami are described here. The Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering (BSAE) program contains required courses in all the specialty areas of architectural engineering (structures, construction, and environmental systems), as well as courses in architectural design. Students can pursue each of these subjects in more depth by the proper selection of electives. The BSAE program requires 132 semester credits and is nominally a four-year program. The Master of Science in Architectural Engineering (MSAE) was introduced in 1990, and the course content of this program provides for specialization in one of the key areas of architectural engineering, and is customized for each student. Students with nonengineering backgrounds are typically admitted to the MSAE program with deficiencies.  相似文献

This paper presents guidelines for implementing the construction warranty contracting method in the highway construction industry. A logical, step-by-step method for effectively applying the warranty contracting program for use in the highway construction industry is developed. Relevant issues that may present obstacles to the implementation are addressed, while the best practices, compiled from an evaluation of the current industry’s state-of-the-art practices, will assist an interested state highway agency in creating a warranty specification. In performing this research, the current use of warranty specifications among state highway agencies was examined, and an in-depth case study of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s warranty program was conducted.  相似文献

This paper describes an initiative to enthuse undergraduate Civil Engineering (CE) students in India about the profession. Various issues impacting CE students are addressed in a novel approach, the 2001 Summer Camp at IIT Kanpur. A select group of undergraduate students who had completed their second year of the Bachelors program in CE were chosen for the camp from different engineering colleges across the country. The objective of the camp was to provide an exposure to technology through motivation, personality development, fun-filled schedules, and excursions. For one month, through a series of activities, these students (1) interacted closely with the captains of CE industry in India to share their present concerns and future dreams in the CE profession and to understand expectations of the industry and society, (2) visited various sites with impressive engineering projects and some outstanding projects under construction, and (3) took part in diverse technical, nontechnical, and extracurricular activities, such as technical video shows, personality development workshop, debates, quizzes, sports, and entertainment. The camp proved to be an eye opener to all participants, the CE industry, and institutions imparting CE education. A questionnare administered at the end of the camp revealed that the perceptions of the students about the CE profession and their self-esteem underwent a positive change. The camp also helped bring the industry and academia in India onto a common platform.  相似文献

Cecil Starling O'Brien, M.D. (1889-1977), was the founder (1927) of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, and he is credited with the establishment of a strong department that has made many important contributions to ophthalmology. For the last seven years, a summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates site in structural engineering, funded by the National Science Foundation, has operated at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During this time, 33 students from 22 colleges and universities have participated in the site. Participants are recruited nationally and have come from as far away as California and Puerto Rico. The program is intended to provide students interested in graduate studies with an introduction to research methods, and to provide students who will not continue their studies past a bachelor of science in civil engineering with a better understanding of how research provides the theoretical foundation of engineering practice. Students work individually with faculty on literature reviews, computer modeling, laboratory testing, and field research. Three students have researched structural failure case studies and the technical and ethical lessons to be learned from them. Participants also have the opportunity to tour construction sites and construction material manufacturers’ and fabricators’ facilities. During the past three years, an ethics seminar series has been added. At the end of the program, students prepare research papers and Web pages documenting their work and present their results to faculty, students, and other participants.  相似文献

The results of a multifaceted investigation into large-amplitude vibrations of bridge stay cables are presented. The vibration of the stay cables occurred under light rain and wind conditions, and resulted in low-frequency, large-amplitude oscillations having recorded displacements of over 24?in. (0.6?m). Due to concerns about the implications of the vibrations on the integrity and durability of the stay cables and observed damage to stay-cable anchorage components, an investigation and repair program was developed. The final repair program arose from an investigation that combined the talents of practicing engineers, the Texas Department of Transportation, and representatives from four universities. Ultimately, a combination of supplemental hydraulic dampers and cable restrainers were used to mitigate the vibrations. This paper describes the results of the investigation and presents the practice-based methodology used to develop the implemented repair program.  相似文献
