Thermal spraying with the HVOF technology is a well known approach to dense metallic, ceramic and cermets coatings with good mechanical properties. Any attempt for improving HVOF coating properties requires a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms that occur during HVOF spraying. Thermal spray processes are not only optimized by empirical testing and by correlation analysis between process parameters and coating properties but also with numerical approaches. Recent attempts to understand the momentum and heat transfer mechanisms between flame and particles, and thus improve the control of the thermokinetic deposition process by analysis of fundamental thermophysical and fluid mechanical processes, have led to computational modeling of the spraying process and verification of simulation results by in-flight particle analysis.This paper focuses on modeling (tracking) of the particle properties during HVOF spraying using alumina powder. The particle properties are sensitive to a large number of process parameters (e.g., gas temperature, gas expansion velocity, pressure, spraying distance, spray powder particle diameter, nozzle geometry, etc.). Variation of the operating parameters of the HVOF process (gas flow rates, stoichiometric oxy/fuel ratio, nozzle design, etc.) is performed during modeling and simulation. The SprayWatch® system for particle in-flight measurement is used for verification of the numerical analysis result.  相似文献

Cold gas spraying is a relatively new coating process by which coatings can be produced without significant heating of the sprayed powder. In contrast to the well-known thermal spray processes such as flame, arc, and plasma spraying, in cold spraying there is no melting of particles prior to impact on the substrate. The adhesion of particles in this process is due solely to their kinetic energy upon impact. Experimental investigations show that successful bonding is achieved only above a critical particle velocity, whose value depends on the temperature and the thermomechanical properties of the sprayed material. This paper supplies a hypothesis for the bonding of particles in cold gas spraying, by making use of numerical modelling of the deformation during particle impact. The results of modelling are assessed with respect to the experimentally evaluated critical velocities, impact morphologies and strengths of coatings. The analysis demonstrates that bonding can be attributed to adiabatic shear instabilities which occur at the particle surface at or beyond the critical velocity. On the basis of this criterion, critical velocities can be predicted and used to optimise process parameters for various materials.  相似文献

Cold gas dynamic spraying (CGDS), a relatively new thermal spraying technique has drawn a lot of attention due to its inherent capability to deposit a wide range of materials at relatively low-operating temperatures. A De Laval nozzle, used to accelerate the powder particles, is the key component of the coating equipment. Knowledge concerning the nozzle design and effect of process parameters is essential to understand the coating process and to enable selection of appropriate parameters for enhanced coating properties. The present work employs a one-dimensional isentropic gas flow model in conjunction with a particle acceleration model to calculate particle velocities. A laser illumination-based optical diagnostic system is used for validation studies to determine the particle velocity at the nozzle exit for a wide range of process and feedstock parameters such as stagnation temperature, stagnation pressure, powder feed rate, particle size and density. The relative influence of process and feedstock parameters on particle velocity is presented in this work.  相似文献

Because the microstructure and physical properties of a thermally sprayed coating are determined by the dynamics of the particles interacting with the spray jet, different processes were tested in order to explore the effects of process variables to particle characteristics and to coating quality. The NiCrBSi powder was sprayed successively with plasma, flame and HVOF process. Standard parameters specified by previous researches were followed for this operation. The DPV 2000 measurement system was used to monitor particle characteristics during their flight into the spray. Then, the coatings were realized at the position corresponding to the DPV measurements. The coatings were characterized in term of microstructure and composition, hardness, Young modulus, porosity and oxide level. The results revealed significant modifications in coating properties depending on the used spray process. Comparing the particle characteristics obtained successively with the different processes allows to better understand the properties of the formed coatings and to investigate the causes of a coating quality changes. Differences were interpreted based on in-flight diagnostic results.  相似文献

This paper presents what is our actual knowledge about sensors, used in the harsh environment of spray booths, to improve the reproducibility and reliability of coatings sprayed with hot or cold gases. First are described, with their limitations and precisions, the different sensors following the in-flight hot particle parameters (trajectories, temperatures, velocities, sizes, and shapes). A few comments are also made about techniques, still under developments in laboratories, to improve our understanding of coating formation such as plasma jet temperature measurements in non-symmetrical conditions, hot gases heat flux, particles flattening and splats formation, particles evaporation. Then are described the illumination techniques by laser flash of either cold particles (those injected in hot gases, or in cold spray gun) or liquid injected into hot gases (suspensions or solutions). The possibilities they open to determine the flux and velocities of cold particles or visualize liquid penetration in the core of hot gases are discussed. Afterwards are presented sensors to follow, when spraying hot particles, substrate and coating temperature evolution, and the stress development within coatings during the spray process as well as the coating thickness. The different uses of these sensors are then described with successively: (i) Measurements limited to particle trajectories, velocities, temperatures, and sizes in different spray conditions: plasma (including transient conditions due to arc root fluctuations in d.c. plasma jets), HVOF, wire arc, cold spray. Afterwards are discussed how such sensor data can be used to achieve a better understanding of the different spray processes, compare experiments to calculations and improve the reproducibility and reliability of the spray conditions. (ii) Coatings monitoring through in-flight measurements coupled with those devoted to coatings formation. This is achieved by either maintaining at their set point both in-flight and certain spray parameters (spray pattern, coating temperature…), or defining a good working area through factorial design, or using artificial intelligence based on artificial neural network (ANN) to predict particle in-flight characteristics and coating structural attributes from the knowledge of processing parameters.  相似文献

Thermal spray coatings are formed by successive impingements and interbonding materials among the splats, solidified individual molten particles. Depending on the processing conditions employed during the spray process, deposits are produced with an assortment of microstructures and properties. This study highlights how the coating oxidation differences are influenced by the mechanisms involved during the spray process. The commercial steel powder referenced Amdry XPT 512 is chosen for a systematic study of comparison across different spraying techniques. Steel particles were sprayed with a F4 plasma torch and with a shrouded plasma spray process used in order to protect particles against atmospheric oxidation. The plasma jet was successively shielding by an inert gas shroud and by an oxidizing gas shroud. In-flight oxidation and post impact oxidation present in coatings are discussed in detail and the effects of these mechanisms on coating properties are addressed. The comparison was made on in-flight particle characteristics and on coating properties in terms of oxide content and porosity level. Using shrouded gas, in-flight characteristics are quite similarly independent of the nature of the shrouded gas. This way, the comparison of oxide contents present in the coatings corresponds to in-flight oxidation and is completely dependent on the nature of the shrouded gas. Comparing these results to those obtained by APS, a decrease in both velocity and temperature of in-flight particles was observed leading also to a significant decrease in oxide contents and to a slight increase in porosity level compared to coatings sprayed with air shrouding.  相似文献

Particle velocity and deposition efficiency in the cold spray process   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Copper powder was sprayed by the cold gas-dynamic method. In-flight particle velocities were measured with a laser two-focus system as a function of process parameters such as gas temperature, gas pressure, and powder feed rate. Mean particle velocities were uniform in a relatively large volume within the plume and agreed with theoretical predictions. The presence of a substrate was found to have no significant effect on in-flight particle velocities prior to impact. Cold-spray deposition efficiencies were measured on aluminum substrates as a function of particle velocity and incident angle of the plume. Deposition efficiencies of up to 95% were achieved. The critical velocity for deposition was determined to be about 640 m/s for the system studied.  相似文献

在热喷涂制备微米/纳米双结构涂层的工艺优化研究中缺乏对颗粒状态与喷涂工艺和涂层结构性能之间关系的综合分析。针对大气等离子喷涂制备双模态微观结构的热障涂层过程开展工艺参数优化研究。首先基于试验测量和数值仿真模拟所获得的颗粒状态以及射流信息,计算可表征飞行粒子受热状态的熔融因子分布,同时开展试验研究获得给定喷涂工况下涂层微观结构和沉积效率。最后以熔融因子为中间参数,研究并建立喷涂工艺-飞行粒子状态-涂层结构特性相关关系。结果表明,数值仿真模拟得到的纳米团聚颗粒状态与试验测量结果基本一致。纳米结构涂层微观结构主要缺陷为未熔纳米团聚粒子及微裂纹。在纳米结构涂层制备过程中,随着喷涂距离增加,飞行粒子的熔融因子先增大后减小,涂层沉积效率先增加后降低,孔隙率和未熔粒子数则先减小后增大。主气流量的增加则会导致熔融因子减小。在喷涂功率相近情况下,采用低电流高电压的组合会使得飞行粒子熔融因子分布取值较大,进而使得涂层沉积效率增加、孔隙率降低。使用熔融因子分析喷涂工艺参数对纳米团聚粉末颗状态和涂层结构特性的影响关系,可用于指导纳米双结构涂层制备过程工艺控制。  相似文献

Suspension plasma spraying (SPS) acquires a significant interest from the industry. The deposited coatings using this technique were proved to have unique microstructural features compared to those built by conventional plasma spraying techniques. In order to optimize this process, in-flight particle diagnostics is considered a very useful tool that helps to control various spraying parameters and permits better coating reproducibility. In that context, the temperature of in-flight particles is one of the most important key elements that helps to optimize and control the SPS process. However, the limitations and challenges associated with this process have a significant effect on the accuracy of two-color pyrometric techniques used to measure the in-flight particle temperature. In this work, the influence of several nonthermal radiation sources on the particle temperature measurement is studied. The plasma radiation scattered by in-flight particles was found to have no significant influence on temperature measurement. Moreover, the detection of the two-color signals at two different locations was found to induce a significant error on temperature measurement. Finally, the plasma radiation surrounding the in-flight particles was identified as the main source of error on the temperature measurement of in-flight particles.  相似文献

No literature exists on the influence of the velocity of Cu powder particles (during cold spraying) on the properties of the coatings like porosity, hardness, electrical conductivity, residual stress, and microstructure. Similarly, though the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization in the Cu powder particle during its deformation under the cold sprayed process has been well documented, its influence on the properties of the coating has not been studied. In this study, it is shown that while porosity of the coating is determined directly by the powder particle velocity, the other properties like hardness, electrical conductivity, and residual stress are determined not only by the particle velocity which depends on stagnation pressure and preheating temperature of the air (process gas) but also additionally on preheating temperature of air per se. The extent of powder particle fragmentation and dynamic recrystallization as a function of particle velocity has been quantified in terms of the grain boundary area fraction and the influence of the latter parameter on the coating properties has also been presented.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the processing of a cold work tool steel (X220CrVMo13-4) coating using HVOF spraying. The coating formation was analyzed based on microstructure, phase, hardness, porosity, oxidation, and adhesion characteristics. An online diagnostic tool was utilized to find out the in-flight characteristics of powder such as temperature and velocity during the coating process to identify the influencing parameters to achieve dense cold work tool steel coatings with low oxidation. The influence of powder size, process parameters, and in-flight characteristics on the formation of cold work tool steel coatings was demonstrated. The results indicated that thick and dense cold work tool steel coatings with low oxidation can be obtained by the selection of appropriate powder size and process parameters.  相似文献

Magnesium-based alloys have excellent physical and mechanical properties for a lot of applications. However, due to high chemical reactivity, magnesium and its alloys are highly susceptible to corrosion. In this study, Al6061 coating was deposited on AZ31B magnesium by cold spray with a commercial Al6061 powder blended with large-sized stainless steel particles (in-situ shot-peening particles) using nitrogen gas. Microstructure and corrosion behavior of the sprayed coating was investigated as a function of shot-peening particle content in the feedstock. It is found that by introducing the in-situ tamping effect using shot-peening (SP) particles, the plastic deformation of deposited particles is significantly enhanced, thereby resulting in a fully dense Al6061 coating. SEM observations reveal that no SP particle is deposited into Al6061 coating at the optimization spraying parameters. Porosity of the coating significantly decreases from 10.7 to 0.4% as the SP particle content increases from 20 to 60 vol.%. The electrochemical corrosion experiments reveal that this novel in-situ SP-assisted cold spraying is effective to deposit fully dense Al6061 coating through which aqueous solution is not permeable and thus can provide exceptional protection of the magnesium-based materials from corrosion.  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of propellant gas, helium, and nitrogen during cold spraying of titanium coatings. Coatings were characterized by SEM and were evaluated for their deposition efficiency (DE), microhardness, and porosity. In selected conditions, three particle velocities were investigated in which for each condition, the propelling gases?? temperature and pressure were attuned to attain similar particle velocities for each gas. Observations show that loosely bonded particles can be detached by high-pressure supersonic gas stream. Selected coatings were characterized by XPS to analyze the occurrence of oxidation and nitridation. Although generally accepted that coating characteristics can be affected by particle temperature, results show that for the same particle velocity, DE and coating density are also a function of substrate temperature. In addition, a thick and fully dense cold sprayed titanium coating was achieved with optimized spray parameters and nozzle using helium. The corresponding average particle velocity was 1173 m/s.  相似文献

Residual stress in high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermally sprayed WC-10Co-4Cr coating was studied based on design of experiment (DOE) with five factors of oxygen flow, fuel gas hydrogen flow, powder feed rate, stand-off distance, and surface speed of substrate. In each DOE run, the velocity and temperature of in-flight particle in flame, and substrate temperature were measured. Almen-type N strips were coated, and their deflections after coating were used for evaluation of residual stress level in the coating. The residual stress in the coating obtained in all DOE runs is compressive. In the present case of HVOF thermally sprayed coating, the residual stress is determined by three types of stress: peening, quenching, and cooling stress generated during spraying or post spraying. The contribution of each type stress to the final compressive residual stress in the coating depends on material properties of coating and substrate, velocity and temperature of in-flight particle, and substrate temperature. It is found that stand-off distance is the most important factor to affect the final residual stress in the coating, following by two-factor interaction of oxygen flow and hydrogen flow. At low level of stand-off distance, higher velocity of in-flight particle in flame and higher substrate temperature post spraying generate more peening stress and cooling stress, resulting in higher compressive residual stress in the coating.  相似文献

Commercially available WC10Co4Cr powder was thermally sprayed by HVOF process. The methane was used as the fuel gas and its flow rate was successively changed as well as the oxygen. The investigation was carried out to determine the influence of operating parameters on the evolution of velocity and temperature of in-flight particles in order to have a better understanding of the interaction between the particle and the flame jet. In relation to the particle characteristics, properties of the sprayed coatings were examined in terms of microstructure, porosity level and microhardness. The results show that the particle velocity and temperature depends strongly on the particle size. The variation of the methane flow rate has a more obvious influence on the velocity and temperature of particles than that of the oxygen. The changes of porosity and microhardness of deposited coatings are discussed corresponding to the variation of fuel and oxygen flow rates.  相似文献

The plasma sprayed ZrO2-7 wt%Y2O3(7YSZ)coating has been widely applied in aircraft engine as a thermal barrier coating.In this study,the duplex TBC system(MCrAlY+7YSZ)were deposited onto 304 stainless steel substrate by APS.Four principal spraying parameters during the deposition of 7YSZ coating were optimized by using orthogonal experimental design,including the stand-off distance,plasma power,preheating temperature and powder feeding rate.Their influences on the coating’s microstructure,adhesion and its mechanical properties were studied and the optimized parameters were finally obtained.The results showed that the dependence of the spraying parameters on the properties of 7YSZ coating is highly correlated to the melting condition of the in-flight particles.  相似文献

High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (HVOF) spray techniques can produce high performance alloy and cermet coatings for applications that require wear resistant surfaces. In HVOF process, the particle velocity and temperature determine the resultant coating properties and in many cases enables a better understanding of the process.The aim of this study is to investigate influences of different oxygen/fuel ratios on velocity and temperature of flying particles as well as properties of the HVOF thermal sprayed WC-CoCr coatings. Particle parameters were recorded just prior to impact on the substrate using in-flight particle diagnostic tool Accuraspray-g3®. Detailed correlation of particle parameters and the coating properties are evaluated in order to deduce particle parameter ranges providing coatings with optimum properties.  相似文献

A hybrid DC arc plasma torch, combining water and gas stabilization, offers a high flexibility in plasma characteristics. These can be controlled in a wide range by the torch operational parameters, such as arc current and secondary gas flow rate. In this study, their influence on plasma spraying of tungsten and copper was investigated. To suppress the in-flight oxidation of the metals, inert gas shrouding was applied. In-flight particle diagnostics and analysis of free-flight particles and coatings was performed for spraying experiments in the open atmosphere and with argon shrouding. Both in-flight particle behavior and coating properties were found to be sensitive to the torch parameters. The application of shrouding was found to affect particle in-flight parameters, reduce the oxide content in the coatings and generally improve their properties, such as thermal conductivity. However, a different degree of these effects was observed for copper and tungsten.  相似文献

Silicon powder was chosen to be deposited by cold spraying for the consideration of possible applications in lithium ion batteries. The influence of the silicon particle shapes other than spherical on the impact velocity and temperature for different working parameters of the gas streams have been numerically investigated by using computational fluid dynamics modeling. The results show that, for same equivalent diameter, the particle impact velocities increase to a maximum velocity when the shape factor increases to a certain value and then decreases to the impact velocity of spherical particles. In the cold-spraying process, the particle velocity profile for smaller shape factors is much closer to that of the gas stream due to the larger particle surface area. Furthermore, the particle impact velocity increment for smaller shape factors is much more remarkable with a higher main propulsion gas temperature and higher carrier gas pressure. The effect of raising the main propulsion gas pressure on the impact velocity of the particles with very smaller shape factors is negligible. The particle impact velocity and temperature can be altered by not only the change of the working parameters of the gas steams but also the change of the sizes and shapes of the sprayed particles.  相似文献

为了深入研究等离子喷涂ZrO2粒子的飞行特征与涂层性能之间的关系,采用三水平四因素正交试验法对主气、辅气、电流及喷涂距离等4个主要参数进行了优化设计,并采用DPV2000热喷涂在线监测仪测定了ZrO2粒子的飞行特征参数,通过IA32定量金相分析软件对涂层的孔隙率进行了测试。结果表明,影响ZrO2粒子温度的主要因素为主气和辅气,影响ZrO2粒子飞行速度的主要因素为喷涂距离和辅气。  相似文献
