The liquid crystalline transitions of two kinds of smectic polyesters with different molecular weights were investigated by DSC, polarized microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The molecular weight affects the transitions significantly for these two kinds of polyesters. With a high enough molecular weight, both poly (pentamethylenep,p-bibenzoate) and poly(hexamethylenep,p-bibenzoate) exhibit an enantiotropic smectic phase, but the two endothermic transition peaks of the DSC heating curve seem to overlap. The polyesters tend to exhibit a monotropic smectic phase as the molecular weight decreases. From the DSC cooling curve, the isotropic-smectic transition can be seen more clearly. As the molecular weight decreases, the smectic order decrease significantly. The molecular weight affects the transitions in a different way for these two different kinds of polyesters.  相似文献

There are numerous examples of proteins that catalyze the same reaction while possessing different structures. This review focuses on two dihydrofolate reductases (DHFRs) that have disparate structures and discusses how the catalytic strategies of these two DHFRs are driven by their respective scaffolds. The two proteins are E. coli chromosomal DHFR (Ec DHFR) and a type II R-plasmid-encoded DHFR, typified by R67 DHFR. The former has been described as a very well evolved enzyme with an efficiency of 0.15, while the latter has been suggested to be a model for a "primitive" enzyme that has not yet been optimized by evolution. This comparison underlines what is important to catalysis in these two enzymes and concurrently highlights fundamental issues in enzyme catalysis.  相似文献

Cantharidin, a potent vesicant and antifeedant, is identified for the first time in two oedemerid beetles from the western hemisphere. Amounts of the substance per beetle were found to range from 2 to 7 g inHeliocis repanda and from 15 to 35 g inOxycopis thoracica. Females had two to three times more cantharidin than males of the same species. Cantharidin loads of these beetles are sufficient to irritate human skin.  相似文献

A method for studying the strength characteristics of multiphase media based on construction of microhardness histograms is developed. It is shown that for St. 3 steel, the microhardness histograms are divided into two groups based on the type of high explosive used: histograms with one maximum and those with two maxima. Using the method proposed, we determined the contribution of zones consisting mainly of ferrite and pearlite grains and zones of multiple distortions to hardening of St. 3 steel. The behavior of these zones under annealing, various pulse actions, and longterm storage is studied. It is shown that under shockwave action, zones with predominant pearlite and ferrite grains are hardened synchronously.  相似文献

Two alumina ceramics with different microstructures were prepared by tailoring the processing conditions. In one of them, elongated alumina grains were aligned parallel to each other ("textured" material), whereas in the other, the elongated grains were uniformly distributed ("random" material). Hertzian indentation was performed on these two materials. The results showed that, although both materials exhibited a diffuse damage zone rather than typical cone cracks, the extent of damage in the textured material is significantly less than that in the random material. The difference in damage behavior between these two materials was interpreted with the aid of the contact-stress field. A new microstructural design method for improving contact-damage resistance is suggested, based on the present results.  相似文献

A conceptual picture is developed to explain the peculiar kinetic features of methane oxidation over supported Pd catalysts (observed by several investigators), notably the hysteresis in activity accompanying temperature cycles. Experiments were performed with supported Pdcatalysts to illustrate these features. The activity hysteresis is closely coupled with a hysteresis in oxygen content. The latter is in turn attributed to the properties of the PCT-diagram of the involved three-phase system; gas phase O2 and the two solid phases, Pd and PdOx. The two main ingredients in the mechanism are: (i) the so-called absorption and decomposition plateau pressures for the O2-Pd-PdO x system are different, i.e., show a hysteresis, (ii) these pressures are not independent ofx, but increase with increasing oxygen content. Both features are deviations from the ideal three-phase system and are frequently observed for H2-metalmetal hydride systems.  相似文献

The electrochemical behaviour of zirconium metal and Ebonex® cathodes during the electrolysis of sulphite ions in sulphuric acid, at temperatures from 20 to 90 C, is reported. The inactivity of these materials for the reduction of sulphite ions to sulphur is demonstrated, making the undivided cell oxidation of sulphite ions to sulphuric acid, at concentrations greater than 3.0 mol dm–3, a viable process. The use of these two cathodes materials in conjunction with lead dioxide-coated and palladium oxide-coated anodes for sulphite ion oxidation is described. Linear sweep voltammograms, chronopotentiometry and batch electrolysis data are presented for sulphite ion oxidation and demonstrate the concept of an undivided electrolysis for the oxidation of sulphur dioxide in sulphuric acid.  相似文献

The fracture toughness behavior during crack growth ( K R -curve behavior) of duplex ceramics is investigated. Different types of K R -curves can be distinguished depending on the microstructural designs of these materials which are characterized by the volume fraction and size of the dispersed pressure zones, and by their effective volume expansion. According to their K R -curve behavior, duplex ceramics can be subdivided into two groups consisting of "short-range" and "long-range" toughened materials. The experimental results are discussed regarding the appearance of different toughening mechanisms which are documented by crack path micrographs. An unusual toughening effect, a "crackbranching chain reaction," is documented by in situ observations. The critical stress to nucleate the observed process zone development is calculated and compared with the internal stress intensity factor K i which has been previously proposed for these materials and with the material strength.  相似文献
