This paper describes propagation characteristics of periodic leaky waveguides for helix waveguides and solid metal waveguides carrying a TE/sup cir//sub 01/ mode based primarily on experimental studies. For low-loss leaky waveguides, this type has not been considered feasible, because of the critical problem encountered in mode conversion-reconversion at the circular apertures. Additional loss due to the periodic array of the circular apertures and TE/sup cir//sub 01/ loss/frequency characteristics of the periodic leaky waveguide using helix waveguides and solid metal waveguides are measured by the shuffle-pulse method in the X-band. The periodic leaky waveguides using solid metal waveguides are seen to be acceptable for practical use as a low-loss leaky waveguide system, according to these measurements.  相似文献

Microwave Bandpass Filters Containing High-Q Dielectric Resonators   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This paper is concerned with dielectric disks used as resonators in microwave bandpass filters. For many years it has been known that modes of resonance occur in isolated dielectric bodies having air boundaries, and that very compact high-Q resonators can be achieved when /spl epsiv/ /sub r/, is high and tan /spl delta/ is low. High-purity TiO/sub 2/ ceramic material, for example, has an /spl epsiv/ /sub r/ about 100, tan /spl delta/ about 0.0001, and Q/sub u/ about 10 000. Practical applications of dielectric resonators have previously been limited by insufficient design information. Formulas are derived for the coupling coefficient between adjacent dielectric-disk resonators within a metal waveguide below cutoff. This metal enclosure is necessary for shielding and to prevent radiation loss. Comparisons between theoretical and experimental coupling coefficient values show very good agreement in each of the three bandpass configurations treated in this paper. Techniques of loop and probe coupling to the end resonators of a multiresonator bandpass filter are discussed and methods of supporting the resonators are suggested. The conclusion is made that microwave dielectric resonators offer important size reductions compared to conventional resonators of similar high Q, but that the center-frequency change of the dielectric resonators as a function of temperature is excessive for many applications. Temperature stabilization is one solution, but preferably a material should be developed having electrical characteristics similar to TiO/sub 2/ ceramic, but with at least an order of magnitude improvement in temperature sensitivity.  相似文献

A technique similar to that of Kirchhoff is used to obtain an analytic expression for mode Iaunching on a semi-infinite rod. The approximation is quasi-optical and only valid for small angles of incidence /spl theta/. When /spl theta/ = 0 only HE/sub 1M/ modes are excited; however, for /spl theta/<<1 many modes can be launched. The effect on HE/sub 11/ mode propagation of small imperfections in a dielectric waveguide is analyzed. At the frequency of interest for optical communication (cutoff for the TM/sub 01/ mode) the radiated power is 160 times larger than that scattered into the HE/sub 11/ mode.  相似文献

This paper presents a leaky-wave antenna with only a single-conductor strip on a substrate without a practical ground plane. The full-wave integral equation method is used to investigate the EH/sub 01/ leaky mode of this single-conductor strip structure. When this single-conductor strip is on a thin substrate with a low dielectric constant, a broad-band radiation regime can exist for the EH/sub 01/ leaky mode. The balanced microstrip lines and the inverted balanced microstrip lines are used to excite this EH/sub 01/ leaky mode. This work presents both the numerically simulated and measured data. The measured bandwidth of a voltage standing-wave ratio /spl les/2 is from 6.55- 13.75 GHz (2.34:1). In this case, the normalized phase constant is very close to 1 and this results in a fixed main-beam radiation pattern in the end-fire direction. This leaky-wave antenna with only a single rectangle stripline of length 110 mm can achieve the same broad-band performance as a tapered microstrip leaky wave antenna with a length 310 mm, as previously reported by the authors.  相似文献

A particularly severe source of error in the microwave measurement of high dielectric constants has been the presence of small air gaps between dielectric surfaces and metal walls. In this paper, two precise measurement techniques are described that eliminate the effect of air gaps through the use of resonant modes, for which E/sub n/=0 at the dielectric-to-metal interface. In one method a cylindrical sample is resonated within a closely fitting circular waveguide, and in the other a cylindrical sample is placed at the center of a radial waveguide. Both methods utilize a circular-electric-mode whose electric field is parallel to the metal walls. The waveguides are dimensioned to be cut off in their air regions at the resonant frequency of the dielectric sample. Formulas yield /spl epsi//sub r/ as a function of the resonant frequency, and of diameter and length of the dielectric cylinder. Measured data on samples having /spl epsi//sub r/ /spl ap/ 85 show the two methods to agree within a few tenths of one percent. The accuracy of the methods is on the order of 0.5 percent maximum error and 0.2 percent probable error when /spl int//sub 0/ is measured within 0.1 percent and D and L within 0.0005 inch (for D/spl ap/ 0.3 inch and L /spl ap/0.1 inch).  相似文献

The mode frequency and the quality factor of nanowire cavities are calculated from the intensity spectrum obtained by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) technique and the Pade/spl acute/ approximation. In a free-standing nanowire cavity with dielectric constant /spl epsiv/=6.0 and a length of 5 /spl mu/m, quality factors of 130, 159, and 151 are obtained for the HE/sub 11/ modes with a wavelength around 375 nm, at cavity radius of 60, 75, and 90 nm, respectively. The corresponding quality factors reduce to 78, 94, and 86 for a nanowire cavity standing on a sapphire substrate with a refractive index of 1.8. The mode quality factors are also calculated for the TE/sub 01/ and TM/sub 01/ modes, and the mode reflectivities are calculated from the mode quality factors.  相似文献

Propagation of guided waves in anisotropic metal-diffused optical waveguide is investigated. Two-dimensional guide-mode dispersion curves are computed and classified for a metal-diffused waveguide with arbitrary optic-axis orientation in various diffusion depth. It is found that a new leaky surface wave exists in the region where the refractive index is above the cutoff value, not below it. Typical values of decay constant are about 5 dB/cm for the wave propagating along X axis on 128/spl deg/ rotated Y-cut LiNbO/sub 3/, and 35 dB/cm for the wave propagating along the direction making an angle of 70/spl deg/ to X axis on Y-cut plane LiNbO/sub 3/. We were able to observe the leaky surface waves experimentally.  相似文献

This letter introduces a new wideband coplanar waveguide-to-rectangular waveguide transition. The transition uses a uniplanar circuit in line with the waveguide, which eases the design and fabrication. The design does not require airbridges. Simulations and measurements of X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) transitions based on both a low- and high-permittivity material (/spl epsiv//sub r/= 2.33 and 10.8) show that the transition works fine over the full frequency band. For /spl epsiv//sub r/= 2.33 the measured return and insertion loss of a back-to-back transition are more than 16 dB and less than 0.4dB, respectively. The corresponding values for /spl epsiv//sub r/= 10.8 are more than 10 dB and less than 1.0 dB, respectively, over 90% of the frequency band. The measured insertion loss values indicate losses of less than 0.14 dB and 0.36 dB at the center frequency for a single transition on a substrate with /spl epsiv//sub r/= 2.33 and 10.8, respectively.  相似文献

Computer-Aided Design of Three-Port Waveguide Junction Circulators   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The complete performance of a lossless three-port H-plane waveguide junction loaded coaxially with various inhomogeneous ferrite cylanders has been evaluated over the waveguide bandwidth and compared with experiment. Qualitative agreement between the predicted and measured performance was generally good using only the first three modes, n=0/spl plusmn/1. It has been shown theoretically and verified experimentally that if the 4/spl pi/M/sub s/ of a homogeneous rod or the internal field is increased, the circulation frequency f/sub 0/ increases; conversely, if the pemittivity is increased, f/sub 0/ decreases. These conflicting effects are modified when the magnetization 4/spl pi/M/sub s/ and permittivity /spl epsiv/ are inhomogeneous. For example, if the 4/spl pi/M/sub s/(/spl gamma/) is small at the outer surface of the rod (with permittivity held constant), the effect on f/sub 0/ is very small; but if 4/spl pi/M/sub s/(spl gamma) approaches zero for /spl gamma/ small, then f/sub 0/ may decrease significantly. On the other hand, if /spl epsiv//sub/spl gamma//(/spl gamma/) approaches unity near the outer surface of the rod, f/sub 0/ may increase significantly; but if /spl epsiv//sub/spl gamma//(/spl gamma/) approaches unity near the center of the rod, f/sub 0/ is affected relatively little. The inhomogeneous structure has also shown that decreasing the ferrite volume may improve the performance, and high-power applications are suggested. With a conducting pin down the center of the ferrite, relative bandwidths of 40-50 percent are predicted.  相似文献

The dielectric-ridge loaded waveguide is analyzed approximately in terms of coupled empty waveguide modes. Using this technique the propagation constant can be easily computed, thus allowing the prediction of the properties of a type of dielectric phase shifter. Experimental evidence is presented which indicates that a two-mode approximation yields reasonable accuracy if the dielectric ridge is on center, is relatively thin compared to the width of the waveguide, and has a low dielectric constant relative to that of free space /spl epsiv//sub 0/.  相似文献

In the 3-mm region (94 Gc) it is desirable to use waveguide components operating in the low loss TE/sub 01/ mode in circular waveguide rather than in fundamental-mode rectangular waveguide. Because this is a higher mode, mode purity is of major concern. A method of identifying undesired modes and their amplitudes is by means of radiation patterns from the end of the waveguide. Components developed to operate in this mode include a transition from rectangular to circular waveguide, standing wave detector, variable attenuator, directional coupler, flexible waveguide, fixed 90/spl deg/ bend and rotary joint.  相似文献

The modal and eigenvalue approaches of 4-port single-junction circulators are combined to describe the theory and construction, of a waveguide device and a stripline device. The three independent variables used in the case of the waveguide one are a pair of HE/sub spl plusmn1,1,1/ open dielectric resonances in a demagnetized ferrite disk, a TM/sub 0,1,1/ resonance on a metal post, and the magnitude of a direct field to remove the degeneracy between the HE/sub spl plusmn1,1,1/ modes. The eigenvalue approach is used to establish systematically each condition one at a time. The variables used in the construction of the stripline junction are a pair of radial n= /spl plusmn/3 degenerate resonances, a radial n=0 resonance, and the amplitude of a direct field to split the degeneracy between the former modes. In this case a circulation condition is found in which it is possible to omit one of the circulation adjustments.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the determination of field patterns, propagation constants, and losses for axially propagating modes guided by an enclosed circular cylindrical, radially inhomogeneous dielectric of the type discussed in Parts I and II. The homogeneous outer medium (/spl gamma/ /spl ges/ /a) is assumed to have a large relative permittivity /spl epsiv//sub 2/, and the analysis includes the perfect conductor case /spl epsiv//sub 2/ /spl rarr/ /spl infin/. The increase in TE/sub 11/-TM/sub 01/ mode bandwidth obtained by inhomogeneously loading (dielectric lining) a circular waveguide is systematically documented. Maximum bandwidth is about 31.83 percent of center frequency (up from about 26.54 percent for fully filled or empty circular waveguides). This makes circular waveguides competitive with square waveguides (bandwidth/spl aprox/ 34.3 percent) as radiators in wide-band dual-polarization arrays. Ferro- and para-electric BaSrTiO/sub 3/ (/spl epsiv//sub r//spl sim/350 and tg/spl delta//spl sim/5/spl times/10/sup -2/ at 0V) thin films were deposited by low-cost sol-gel techniques. Subsequently, the films were used for fabricating coplanar waveguide phaseshifters using tunable finger-shaped capacitors. A 310/spl deg/ phaseshift was obtained at 30GHz and 35V of tuning voltage with 3.6dB of insertion loss yielding a figure of merit of 85/spl deg//dB.  相似文献

This paper presents the theoretical performance (input impedance, -10 dB return-loss bandwidth, radiation patterns and surface efficiencies) of reduced size substrate lenses fed by aperture-coupled microstrip patch antennas. The diameter of the extended hemispherical homogeneous dielectric (/spl epsiv//sub r,lens/) lenses varies between one and five wavelengths in free-space, in order to obtain radiating structures whose directivity is comprised between 10 and 25 dB. A lot of configurations of lenses are investigated using the finite-difference time-domain methods technique and compared in the 47-50 GHz band as a function of their diameter, extension length and dielectric constant. In particular, the analysis of internal reflections-in time and frequency domains-shows that the latter have potentially a strong influence on the input impedance of small lens antennas, even for low values of /spl epsiv//sub r,lens/(2.2), whereas the usual limit (beyond which anti-reflection coatings are required) is /spl epsiv//sub r,lens/=4. We also demonstrate that the diffraction limit of reduced size lenses is reached for extension lengths varying between 50% and 175% of the extension of synthesized ellipses, depending on the lens material and diameter. Finally, we show that superdirective structures with surface efficiencies reaching 250% can be obtained with small lens diameters, justifying the interest in reduced size lens antennas.  相似文献

A low-loss and polarisation-insensitive singlemode BaTiO/sub 3/ thin-film waveguide is reported. Polarisation-dependent loss as low as 0.1 dB/cm at a wavelength of 1.55 /spl mu/m has been achieved by a novel Si/sub 3/N/sub 4/ strip-loaded BaTiO/sub 3/ waveguide structure. In an axially straight multimode circular waveguide taper excited with a pure TE/sup /spl circle// /sub 11/ dominant mode, the first and only converted mode at and near cutoff is the TM/sup/spl circle// /sub 11/ mode. It is shown that in an axially straight multimode square waveguide taper excited with a pure TE/sup/spl square// /sub 10/ dominant mode, the TM/sup/spl square// /sub 12/ mode corresponding to the TM/sup/spl circle// /sub 11/ mode in circular case is not the only first converted mode at and near cutoff. The overall behavior or coupling mechanism of waveguides is similar whether the waveguide is rectangular, square, circular, or elliptical: i.e., the overall coupling coefficient at cutoff of a converted mode or modes approaches an ininfinity of the order 0/sup -1/4/.  相似文献
