The extent to which a glove modifies the risks from hand-transmitted vibration is quantified in ISO 10819:1996 by a measure of glove transmissibility determined with one vibration magnitude, one contact force with a handle and only three subjects. This study was designed to investigate systematically the vibration transmissibility of four ‘anti-vibration’ gloves over the frequency range 16–1600 Hz with 12 subjects, at six magnitudes of vibration (0.25–8.0 ms?2 r.m.s.) and with six push forces (5 N to 80 N). The four gloves showed different transmissibility characteristics that were not greatly affected by vibration magnitude but highly dependent on push force. In all conditions, the variability in transmissibility between subjects was as great as the variability between gloves. It is concluded that a standardised test of glove dynamic performance should include a wide range of hands and a range of forces representative of those occurring in work with vibratory tools.

Statement of Relevance: The transmission of vibration through anti-vibration gloves is highly dependent on the push force between the hand and a handle and also highly dependent on the hand that is inside the glove. The influence of neither factor is well reflected in ISO 10819:1996, the current standard for anti-vibration gloves.  相似文献

The transmission of vibration from hand-held tools via work gloves and into the operators' hands can be affected by several factors such as glove material properties, tool vibration conditions, grip force, and temperature. The primary aim of this study is to develop a new methodology to measure and evaluate vibration transmissibility for a human finger in contact with different materials, whilst measuring and controlling the grip force. The study presented here used a new bespoke lab-based apparatus for assessing vibration transmissibility that includes a generic handle instrumented for vibration and grip force measurements. The handle is freely suspended and can be excited at a range of real-world vibration conditions whilst being gripped by a human subject. The study conducted a frequency response function (FRF) of the handle using an instrumented hammer to ensure that the handle system was resonance free at the important frequency range for glove research, as outlined in ISO 10819: 1996: 2013, and also investigated how glove material properties and design affect the tool vibration transmission into the index finger (Almagirby et al. 2015). The FRF results obtained at each of six positions shows that the dynamic system of the handle has three resonance frequencies in the low frequency range (2, 11 and 17 Hz) and indicated that no resonances were displayed up to a frequency of about 550 Hz. No significant vibration attenuation was shown at frequencies lower than 150 Hz. The two materials cut from the gloves that were labelled as anti-vibration gloves (AV) indicated resonance at frequencies of 150 and 160 Hz. However, the non-glove material that did not meet the requirements for AV gloves showed resonance at 250 Hz. The attenuation for the three materials was found at frequencies of 315 Hz and 400 Hz. The level and position of the true resonance frequencies were found to vary between samples and individual subjects.  相似文献

This study investigated effects of applied force on the apparent mass of the hand, the dynamic stiffness of glove materials and the transmission of vibration through gloves to the hand. For 10 subjects, 3 glove materials and 3 contact forces, apparent masses and glove transmissibilities were measured at the palm and at a finger at frequencies in the range 5–300 Hz. The dynamic stiffnesses of the materials were also measured. With increasing force, the dynamic stiffnesses of the materials increased, the apparent mass at the palm increased at frequencies greater than the resonance and the apparent mass at the finger increased at low frequencies. The effects of force on transmissibilities therefore differed between materials and depended on vibration frequency, but changes in apparent mass and dynamic stiffness had predictable effects on material transmissibility. Depending on the glove material, the transmission of vibration through a glove can be increased or decreased when increasing the applied force.

Practitioner summary: Increasing the contact force (i.e. push force or grip force) can increase or decrease the transmission of vibration through a glove. The vibration transmissibilities of gloves should be assessed with a range of contact forces to understand their likely influence on the exposure of the hand and fingers to vibration.  相似文献

There are many tasks in the industrial environment, involving the use of the hands, for which gloves are required or voluntarily used by many workers. When an individual grasps a handle in attempting to exert short-term maximum force his/ her capability is influenced by the use of gloves.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of a single glove and a double glove on handle forces generated by individuals. Thirty male volunteers were used as subjects. The maximum pull force, maximum push force, maximum wrist flexion torque and maximum wrist extension torque were measured under the condition of a slippery handle. These exertions of the subject's dominant hand were measured while using no glove, one glove and two gloves. Vibration-reducing (VR) gloves are commonly used as a means to help control exposures to hand-transmitted vibrations generated by powered hand tools. The objective of this study was to characterise the vibration transmissibility spectra and frequency-weighted vibration transmissibility of VR gloves at the palm of the hand in three orthogonal directions. Seven adult males participated in the evaluation of seven glove models using a three-dimensional hand–arm vibration test system. Three levels of hand coupling force were applied in the experiment. This study found that, in general, VR gloves are most effective at reducing vibrations transmitted to the palm along the forearm direction. Gloves that are found to be superior at reducing vibrations in the forearm direction may not be more effective in the other directions when compared with other VR gloves. This casts doubts on the validity of the standardised glove screening test.

Practitioner Summary: This study used human subjects to measure three-dimensional vibration transmissibility of vibration-reducing gloves at the palm and identified their vibration attenuation characteristics. This study found the gloves to be most effective at reducing vibrations along the forearm direction. These gloves did not effectively attenuate vibration along the handle axial direction.  相似文献

Biomechanical models were evaluated for effects of handle orientation, handle material, gloves and arm posture on maximal pull/push force. Eight healthy subjects performed maximum pull/push exertions on handles with two different orientations and two different surface materials, using bare hand and two types of glove as well as two arm postures. The empirical data supported the proposed biomechanical models: Pull/push forces for the bare hand on a rubber handle decreased 10% when the handle was parallel to the pull/push direction, compared with when perpendicular to it. For parallel handles, pull/push forces further decreased with decreasing hand–handle friction coefficient (simulated by different handle materials and gloves). Pull force exerted by the bare hand was 29% greater when the elbow was extended than when flexed. Pull force was greater than push force (with bare hand and flexed elbow). The biomechanical models suggest that friction between the hand and handle limits pull/push forces for parallel handles. Elbow strength may be responsible for decreased pull force for the flexed elbow posture and decreased force for pull compared with push in the postures examined.

Statement of Relevance: Biomechanical models presented in this paper provide insights for causes of upper extremity strength limitations during pull/push tasks. Findings in this paper can be used directly in the design of workstation and objects to reduce fatigue and risk of musculoskeletal disorders.  相似文献

Vibration-reducing (VR) gloves have been increasingly used to help reduce vibration exposure, but it remains unclear how effective these gloves are. The purpose of this study was to estimate tool-specific performances of VR gloves for reducing the vibrations transmitted to the palm of the hand in three orthogonal directions (3-D) in an attempt to assess glove effectiveness and aid in the appropriate selection of these gloves. Four typical VR gloves were considered in this study, two of which can be classified as anti-vibration (AV) gloves according to the current AV glove test standard. The average transmissibility spectrum of each glove in each direction was synthesized based on spectra measured in this study and other spectra collected from reported studies. More than seventy vibration spectra of various tools or machines were considered in the estimations, which were also measured in this study or collected from reported studies. The glove performance assessments were based on the percent reduction of frequency-weighted acceleration as is required in the current standard for assessing the risk of vibration exposures. The estimated tool-specific vibration reductions of the gloves indicate that the VR gloves could slightly reduce (<5%) or marginally amplify (<10%) the vibrations generated from low-frequency (<25 Hz) tools or those vibrating primarily along the axis of the tool handle. With other tools, the VR gloves could reduce palm-transmitted vibrations in the range of 5%–58%, primarily depending on the specific tool and its vibration spectra in the three directions. The two AV gloves were not more effective than the other gloves with some of the tools considered in this study. The implications of the results are discussed.Relevance to industryHand-transmitted vibration exposure may cause hand-arm vibration syndrome. Vibration-reducing gloves are considered as an alternative approach to reduce the vibration exposure. This study provides useful information on the effectiveness of the gloves when used with many tools for reducing the vibration transmitted to the palm in three directions. This study proposes a methodology for evaluating the integrated performance of vibration reducing (VR) gloves considering four measures. These include manual dexterity, distributed palm and fingers vibration transmission and grip strength preservation, which generally pose conflicting design requirements. The weights for the conflicting performance measures are identified for the given work conditions, classified according to the frequency ranges of predominant tool handle vibration (low and high), as defined in ISO-10819 together with the assembly/disassembly tasks. An index of weighted measures is formulated for identifying the most desirable VR glove for the given work condition. The results showed the greatest weighting for the fingers vibration response for high-frequency vibration spectra. Higher weightings for palm vibration and muscles' activity, were obtained for low-frequency vibration spectra, while the weighting for manual dexterity increased when coupled with manual tasks. An integrated performance index is identified and applied to rank nine different VR gloves and a conventional glove with known individual performance measures for identifying the most desirable glove. The vibration reducing gloves included: five gloves with gel vibration isolation materials, denoted as gel1, …, gel5; two gloves with air bladder vibration isolation material, denoted as air1 and air2; one hybrid glove comprising air pocket vibration isolation material in the palm region and gel in the fingers regions, denoted as hybrid; and a rubber glove. The gel2, air2 and hybrid gloves, made of air bladder or viscoelastic gels, showed superior integrated performance for high- and low-frequency vibration spectra among the ten alternatives. The fabric and rubber gloves revealed best integrated performance for the multiple tasks in conjunction with the low-frequency vibration spectrum.  相似文献

Owing to the strong dependence of the health risks associated with vibration exposure of the human hand and arm on hand force, a laboratory study was conducted to develop a methodology for measurement of the contact force at the tool handle–hand interface, and to identify the relationship between the contact force and the hand grip and push forces. A simulated tool handle fixture was realized in the laboratory to measure the grip and push forces using compression/extension force sensors integrated within the handle and a force plate, respectively. The contact force was derived through integration of the interface pressure over the contact area. These were measured using a capacitive pressure-sensing grid. The measurements were performed with 10 male subjects and three circular cross-section handles of different sizes under different combinations of grip and push forces. The hand–handle interface pressure data were analyzed to derive the contact force, as functions of the constant magnitudes of the grip and push forces, and the handle size. The results suggest that the hand–handle contact force is strongly dependent upon not only the grip and push forces but also the handle diameter. The contact force for a given handle size can be expressed as a linear combination of grip and push forces, where the contribution of the grip force is considerably larger than that of the push force. The results further suggest that a linear relation can characterize the dependence of the contact force on the handle diameter. The validity of the proposed relationship is demonstrated by evaluating the magnitudes of errors between the estimated contact forces with the measured data for the range of handle diameters, and grip and push forces considered in the study.

Relevance to industry

The methodology proposed in this study can be applied to measure the effective hand–handle contact force at workplaces for assessing the health risks associated with exposure to hand-transmitted vibration exposure and hand–wrist cumulative trauma. The relationship proposed in the study could be effectively applied for estimating the hand–handle contact force from known grip and push forces that are conveniently and directly measurable in laboratory studies involving vibration analyses of the human hand, power tools and relevant vibration attenuation devices. It is expected to be most useful in field applications, where it could provide an estimate of the range of magnitudes of the hand-grip force applied to the handle of an actual tool, which is quite difficult and expensive to measure. The relationship is also expected to contribute to the on-going standardization efforts for defining a correction factor to account for the effects of hand force on the vibration transmission and hand injuries.  相似文献

Vibration-reducing (VR) gloves have been used to reduce the hand-transmitted vibration exposures from machines and powered hand tools but their effectiveness remains unclear, especially for finger protection. The objectives of this study are to determine whether VR gloves can attenuate the vibration transmitted to the fingers and to enhance the understanding of the mechanisms of how these gloves work. Seven adult male subjects participated in the experiment. The fixed factors evaluated include hand force (four levels), glove condition (gel-filled, air bladder, no gloves), and location of the finger vibration measurement. A 3-D laser vibrometer was used to measure the vibrations on the fingers with and without wearing a glove on a 3-D hand-arm vibration test system. This study finds that the effect of VR gloves on the finger vibration depends on not only the gloves but also their influence on the distribution of the finger contact stiffness and the grip effort. As a result, the gloves increase the vibration in the fingertip area but marginally reduce the vibration in the proximal area at some frequencies below 100 Hz. On average, the gloves reduce the vibration of the entire fingers by less than 3% at frequencies below 80 Hz but increase at frequencies from 80 to 400 Hz. At higher frequencies, the gel-filled glove is more effective at reducing the finger vibration than the air bladder-filled glove. The implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

The risk assessment of hand tool workers exposed to hand-arm vibrations is still problematic. It is based, accordingly to ISO 5349, on a frequency-weighted measurement recorded at the handle of the tool. Unfortunately, the frequency-weighted filter recommended by ISO 5349 does not take into account any amplification of the hand-arm system and underestimates the global rms acceleration transmitted to the hand. In this study, the vibration transmitted from the tool handle to the worker's wrist is investigated in an industrial environment for seven commercial grinders, two subjects and three push forces. The results are compared with the ISO-5349 and ACGIH threshold limit values, and a new frequency weighting filter is proposed, by which the amplification close to the natural frequencies of the hand-arm system can be considered in the evaluation of the vibration transmitted to the wrist from vibration measurements at the tool handle in a grinding operation.  相似文献

The research presented in this paper focuses on the determination of the rotational mechanical impedance of the human hand-arm system under rotational vibration excitation, applied via the knob-shaped handle. During the development of power tools, the interaction between the power tool and the hand-arm system must be simulated. This requires accurate models of the hand-arm system's biodynamics. The current state of research provides such models for translational vibrations, but are limited when also considering rotational vibrations. To enable the development of such models, the study investigates the biodynamics of the hand-arm system for rotational vibration excitation. Therefore, the rotational impedance of 21 subjects was measured in a study. In the study, a knob-shaped measuring handle, whereby the subjects applied different combinations of gripping and push forces to the handle, vibrated the hand-arm system of the subjects rotationally. The results show that a higher gripping force results in a higher magnitude of rotational mechanical impedance, while the push force does not seem to influence the rotational impedance. The missing influence of the push force on the rotational impedance may be caused by the alignment between hand position, force direction, and excitation axis. The findings of this study extend the overall knowledge of rotational mechanical impedance for simulating the hand-arm system in power tool development. In regards to the rotational vibration exposure when performing sanding tasks, the results suggest that a frictional connection between the hand and the power tool handle reduces the vibration exposure of the hand-arm system.  相似文献

It might be assumed that increasing the thickness of a glove would reduce the vibration transmitted to the hand. Three material samples from an anti-vibration glove were stacked to produce three thicknesses: 6.4, 12.8 and 19.2 mm. The dynamic stiffnesses of all three thicknesses, the apparent mass at the palm and the finger and the transmission of vibration to the palm and finger were measured. At frequencies from 20 to 350 Hz, the material reduced vibration at the palm but increased vibration at the finger. Increased thickness reduced vibration at the palm but increased vibration at the finger. The measured transmissibilities could be predicted from the material dynamic stiffness and the apparent mass of the palm and finger. Reducing the dynamic stiffness of glove material may increase or decrease the transmission of vibration, depending on the material, the frequency of vibration and the location of measurement (palm or finger).

Practitioner Summary: Transmission of vibration through gloves depends on the dynamic response of the hand and the dynamic stiffness of glove material, which depends on material thickness. Measuring the transmission of vibration through gloves to the palm of the hand gives a misleading indication of the transmission of vibration to the fingers.  相似文献

Vehicle drivers receive tactile feedback from steering-wheel vibration that depends on the frequency and magnitude of the vibration. From an experiment with 12 subjects, equivalent comfort contours were determined for vertical vibration of the hands at two positions with three grip forces. The perceived intensity of the vibration was determined using the method of magnitude estimation over a range of frequencies (4-250 Hz) and magnitudes (0.1-1.58 ms−2 r.m.s.). Absolute thresholds for vibration perception were also determined for the two hand positions over the same frequency range. The shapes of the comfort contours were strongly dependent on vibration magnitude and also influenced by grip force, indicating that the appropriate frequency weighting depends on vibration magnitude and grip force. There was only a small effect of hand position. The findings are explained by characteristics of the Pacinian and non-Pacinian tactile channels in the glabrous skin of the hand.  相似文献

This study conducted two series of experiments to investigate the relationships between hand coupling force and biodynamic responses of the hand–arm system. In the first experiment, the vibration transmissibility on the system was measured as a continuous function of grip force while the hand was subjected to discrete sinusoidal excitations. In the second experiment, the biodynamic responses of the system subjected to a broadband random vibration were measured under five levels of grip forces and a combination of grip and push forces. This study found that the transmissibility at each given frequency increased with the increase in the grip force before reaching a maximum level. The transmissibility then tended to plateau or decrease when the grip force was further increased. This threshold force increased with an increase in the vibration frequency. These relationships remained the same for both types of vibrations. The implications of the experimental results are discussed.

Practitioner Summary: Shocks and vibrations transmitted to the hand–arm system may cause injuries and disorders of the system. How to take hand coupling force into account in the risk assessment of vibration exposure remains an important issue for further studies. Non-powered hand tools are a major means of carrying out routine maintenance and repair activities. The use of gloves in such situations is essential in order to protect the hands from potential injuries. Together, the gloves and hand tools accomplish the task by transmitting the muscle force on to the workpiece. Several studies have reported that the capability of hands to exert force/torque is severely influenced by the use of gloves. The use of gloves could also lead to a cumulative trauma disorder, rapid onset of muscular fatigue, etc. Most previous studies have focused on determining the influence of gloves on grip strength or push/pull forces one would exert while using devices such as knives. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of a variety of commercially available gloves on the force/torque exertion capability of workers with wrenches and screwdrivers that are commonly used in performing routine maintenance and repairs. Nineteen males participated in the study and, using seven different hand tools and nine varieties of commercial gloves, exerted peak volitional torques on a simulated workpiece. The peak torque and electromyogram of flexor and extensor muscles were recorded. The results indicated that muscle activity did not differ significantly between the glove and no-glove conditions and the peak torque exertion capability of individuals generally increased with gloves. The magnitude of torque exerted on the workpiece was different for different gloves. The results also contradict some of the previously reported findings.  相似文献

Operation of vibrating power hand tools can result in excessive grip force, which may increase the risk of cumulative trauma disorders in the upper extremities. An experiment was performed to study grip force exerted by 14 subjects operating a simulated hand tool vibrating at 9.8 m/s2 and 49 m/s2 acceleration magnitudes, at 40 Hz and 160 Hz frequencies, with vibration delivered in three orthogonal directions, and with 1.5kg and 3.0kg load weights. Average grip force increased from 25.3 N without vibration to 32.1 N (27%) for vibration at 40 Hz, and to 27.1N (7%) for vibration at 160 Hz. Average grip force also increased from 27.4 N at 9.8 m/s2 acceleration to 31.8 N (16%) at 49m/s2. Significant interactions between acceleration x frequency, and frequency x direction were also found. The largest average grip force increase was from 25.3N without vibration to 35.8N (42%) for 40 Hz and 49 m/s2 vibration. The magnitude of this increase was of the same order as for a two-fold increase in load weight, where average grip force increased from 22.5N to 35.0N (56%). A second experiment studied hand flexor and extensor muscle responses using electromyography for five subjects holding a handle vibrating at 8 m/s2 using ISO weighted acceleration, with frequencies of 20 Hz, 40 Hz, 80 Hz and 160 Hz, and grip forces of 5%, 10% and 15% of maximum voluntary contraction. Muscle responses were greatest at frequencies where grip force was affected, indicating that the tonic vibration reflex was the likely cause of increased grip exertions.  相似文献

A five-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) bio-mechanical model of the hand-arm system is developed to study the vibration transmissibility characteristics of the human hand-arm. The model parameters are identified from the characteristics of vibration transmitted to the hand, forearm and upper arm, measured in the 10–200 Hz frequency range under a constant 25.0 N grip force. A concept of an energy flow divider is proposed to reduce the flow of vibration energy into the hand. The coupled hand-arm-divider is modeled as a six-DOF dynamical system and the response characteristics are evaluated for handle excitations caused by a palm-grip orbital sander. The response characteristics of the coupled hand-arm-divider model are compared to those of the hand-arm model to demonstrate the potential performance benefits of the proposed energy flow divider. The hand-transmitted vibration is further assessed using the overall weighted acceleration response, and it is concluded that the proposed energy flow divider can reduce the magnitude of hand-transmitted vibration considerably.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of anti-vibration gloves on manual dexterity and to explore factors affecting the manual dexterity. The manual dexterity of ten different gloves was investigated with 15 adult male subjects via performing two different dexterity tests, namely ASTM F2010 standard test and Two-Hand Turning and Placing Minnesota test. Two-factor repeated-measures analysis of variance was conducted to evaluate the main effects of glove type, test method and their interaction effect on manual dexterity. Results suggested that glove type yielded significant effect on manual dexterity (p?<?.001), while no significant difference was observed between test methods (p?=?.112). The interaction effect of glove type and test method also revealed a significant difference (p?=?.009). The manual dexterity decreased nearly linearly with increase in the glove thickness, which further showed a moderately significant difference on the number of drops during the tests.

Practitioner Summary: Anti-vibration gloves may adversely affect manual dexterity and work precision, which may discourage their usage. This article presented a study of manual dexterity performance of anti-vibration gloves and the design factors affecting the manual dexterity. The results were discussed in view of a design guidance for improved hand dexterity, which would encourage the use of anti-vibration gloves in the workplace.  相似文献

Workers' can be exposed to high levels of hand vibration when drilling into concrete or rock using hammer drills; exposures that can cause hand arm vibration syndrome. Exposure levels may be reduced by different drill and bit designs and drilling methods, but these interventions have not been systematically evaluated. The purpose of this project was to develop a robotic test bench system for measuring handle vibration on drills in order to compare differences in drill designs, power sources, bit designs and drilling methods. The test bench is a departure from the ISO method for measuring drill handle vibration (ISO 28927-10), which requires drilling by humans. The test bench system was designed to repeatedly drill into concrete blocks under force control while productivity and handle vibration were measured. Handle vibration levels with different drills and bit sizes were similar to those collected following ISO methods. A new robotic test bench system for measuring handle vibration is presented and validated against ISO methods and demonstrates dynamic properties similar to human drilling.  相似文献
