A fuel cell system model with detailed cooling module model was developed to evaluate the control algorithms of cooling module which is used for the thermal management of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system. The system model is composed of a dynamic fuel cell stack model and a detailed dynamic cooling module model. To extend modeling flexibility, the fuel cell stack model utilizes analytic approach to capture the transient behavior of the stack temperature corresponding to the change of the coolant temperature and the flow rate during load follow-up. The cooling module model integrated model of fan, water pump, coolant passage, and electric motors so that the model is capable of investigation of operating strategy of pump and fan.The fuel cell system model is applied to the investigation of the control logics of the cooling module. Since, it is necessary for the control of cooling module to define the reference conditions such as coolant temperature and fuel cell stack temperature, this study presents such thermal management criteria. Finally, two control algorithms were compared, a conventional control algorithm and a feedback control algorithm. As a consequence, the feedback control algorithm was found to be more suitable for the cooling module of the PEMFC stack, as they consume less parasitic power while producing more stack power compared to a conventionally controlled cooling module.  相似文献

Defective cell in a PEMFC stack may reduce durability and reliability of the stack and even damage the stack. However, the dynamic performance of defective cell within a PEMFC stack is not clear. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of the defective cell under different load conditions are analyzed. The results reveal that the defective cell has slower dynamic response rate than other single fuel cells, and the defective cell causes a poor voltage uniformity of the stack. The increased frequency of load change makes the voltage change rate of defective cell higher. The increased amplitude of load change has a more negative impact than the increased frequency of load change, and makes the defective cell more prone to flooding. Furthermore, impedance spectrum shows that these load conditions have greater negative effect for the defective cell than other cells. Finally, according to the experimental results and practical application, recommends related to control strategy of PEMFC stack are proposed to extend lifetime.  相似文献

As one of the most promising sustainable energy technologies available today, proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) engines are becoming more and more popular in various applications, especially in transportation vehicles. However, the complexity and the severity of the vehicle operating conditions present challenges to control the temperature distribution in single cells and stack, which is an important factor influencing the performance and durability of PEMFC engines. It has been found that regulating the input and output coolant water temperature can improve the temperature distribution. Therefore, the control objective in this paper is regulating the input and output temperature of coolant water at the same time. Firstly, a coupled model of the thermal management system is established based on the physical structure of PEMFC engines. Then, in order to realize the simultaneous control of the inlet and outlet cooling water temperature of the PEMFC stack, a decoupling controller is proposed and its closed-loop stability is proved. Finally, based on the actual PEMFC engine platform, the effectiveness, accuracy and reliability of the proposed decoupling controller are tested. The experimental results show that with the proposed decoupling controller, the inlet and outlet temperatures of the PEMFC stack cooling water can be accurately controlled on-line. The temperature error range is less than 0.2 °C even under the dynamic current load conditions.  相似文献

Due to complex electrochemical and thermal phenomena, varying operations towards automotive applications, and vulnerable ancillaries in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control (FTC) design have become important aspects to improve the reliability, safety and performance of PEMFC systems. This paper presents a novel FTC scheme for automotive PEMFC air supply systems via coordinated control of the air flow rate and the pressure in cathodes. A dynamic surface triple-step approach is first proposed considering nonlinear dynamics and the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) property, which combines the advantage of dynamic surface control in avoiding an “explosion of complexity” and the advantage of triple-step control in guaranteeing a simple structure and high performance. The normal case, the faulty case at the supply manifold and the faulty case in the back pressure valve are considered in the FTC design, with the stability of the overall system proved using Lyapunov methods. MATLAB/Simulink simulations with a high-fidelity PEMFC model verify the effectiveness of the proposed FTC scheme in regulating the air flow rate and oxygen excess ratio and maintaining the pressure of the cathode at a desired level even under faulty conditions.  相似文献

The current evolution in the design of fuel cell systems, together with the considerable development of integrated control techniques in microprocessor systems allows the development of portable fuel cell applications in which optimized control of the fuel cells performance is possible. Control, in the strict sense, implies a thorough knowledge of both the static and dynamic behaviour of the system comprising the stack, manifold and the compressor that enables oxygen supply. The objective of this control, far from being simply to maintain the stack free from oxygen and hydrogen shortages, is to achieve the necessary values of these gases, minimizing compressor consumption, which is the cause of the greatest inefficiency of fuel cells. This objective is essential when fuel cell systems are involved in situations where the net power of the stack is reduced and any unnecessary consumption lowers the total power available to the user. The design of an efficient control system requires the following steps: (1) modeling of the stack, compressor and other pneumatic elements involved in the system. (2) Calculation of the control equations and simulation of the entire system (including control). (3) Emulation of the stack and other pneumatic elements and simulation utilizing the designed control system. (4) Physical realization of the control system and testing within the fuel cell system. The design of a control system for fuel cell systems is introduced to manage PEMFC stacks. The control system will guarantee the correct performance of the stack around its optimal operation point, in which the net power is maximized. This means that both, the air flow and the stack temperature are controlled to a correct value.  相似文献

The proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack is a key component in the fuel cell/battery hybrid vehicle. Thermal management and optimized control of the PEMFC under real driving cycle remains a challenging issue. This paper presents a new hybrid vehicle model, including simulations of diver behavior, vehicle dynamic, vehicle control unit, energy control unit, PEMFC stack, cooling system, battery, DC/DC converter, and motor. The stack model had been validated against experimental results. The aim is to model and analyze the characteristics of the 30 kW PEMFC stack regulated by its cooling system under actual driving conditions. Under actual driving cycles (0–65 kW/h), 33%–50% of the total energy becomes stack heat; the heat dissipation requirements of the PEMFC stack are high and increase at high speed and acceleration. A PID control is proposed; the cooling water flow rate is adjusted; the control succeeded in stabilizing the stack temperature at 350 K at actual driving conditions. Constant and relative lower inlet cooling water temperature (340 K) improves the regulation ability of the PID control. The hybrid vehicle model can provide a theoretical basis for the thermal management of the PEMFC stack in complex vehicle driving conditions.  相似文献

In this paper, the energy efficiency of the Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) systems based on the fueling rates is systematically investigated. The PEMFC system under dynamic load must be operated close to the Maximum Efficiency Point (MEP) to obtain the highest energy efficiency. This is a difficult task because the MEP is dependent on the PEMFC parameters and the control PEMFC variables, besides the load profile. Thus, the MEP must be tracked dynamically with a safe search speed and funded accurately during the stationary regimes. Consequently, a real-time control is recommended to be used. The Extremum Seeking (ES) control scheme is proposed here to evaluate the FC net power at the MEP under different fueling rates and load profiles. Some interesting conclusions are obtained based on the comparative method proposed using as reference a base control technique or a PEMFC stack: 1) the MEP is different based on the control of the fuel or air flow rate; 2) the energy efficiency increases if both fueling flow rates are controlled; 3) the energy efficiency is less sensitive to power losses if the MEP is tracked by the ES controller based on air flow rate; 4) the strategy of load following control considering the fuel flow rate as an input variable is recommended based on the observation that the MEP is more sensitive to this in comparison to the air flow rate; 5) the design of an appropriate MEP tracking controller should equally focus on safe operation and the increase of the performances such as the search speed and tracking accuracy under dynamic load. All these remarks are based on an extensive numerical simulation, which are highlighted in this paper by the main results shown.  相似文献

In a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) water management is one of the critical issues to be addressed. Although the membrane requires humidification for high proton conductivity, water in excess decreases the cell performance by flooding. In this paper an improved strategy for water management in a fuel cell operating with low water content is proposed using a parallel serpentine-baffle flow field plate (PSBFFP) design compared to the parallel serpentine flow field plate (PSFFP). The water management in a fuel cell is closely connected to the temperature control in the fuel cell and gases humidifier. The PSBFFP and the PSFFP were evaluated comparatively under three different humidity conditions and their influence on the PEMFC prototype performance was monitored by determining the current density–voltage and current density–power curves. Under low humidification conditions the PEMFC prototype presented better performance when fitted with the PSBFFP since it retains water in the flow field channels.  相似文献

A lumped parameter dynamic model is developed for predicting the stack temperature, temperatures of the exit reactant gases and coolant water outlet in a proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system. A dynamic model for a water pump is also developed and can be used along with the thermal model to control the stack temperature. The thermal and water pump models are integrated with the air flow compressor and PEMFC stack current–voltage models developed by Pukrushpan et al. to study the fuel cell system under open and closed-loop conditions. The results obtained for the aforementioned variables from open-loop simulation studies are found to be similar to the experimental values reported in the literature. Closed-loop simulations using the model are carried out to study the effect of stack temperature on settling times of other variables such as stack voltage, air flow rate, oxygen excess ratio and net power of the stack. Further, interaction studies are performed for selecting appropriate input–output pairs for control purpose. Finally, the developed thermal model can assist the designer in choosing the required number of cooling plates to minimize the difference between the cooling water outlet temperature and stack temperature.  相似文献

The hydrogen recirculation in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is recommended for the hydrogen supply of PEMFC, and hydrogen ejectors are gradually being used in fuel cell vehicles due to low noise and low energy consumption. However, there is a lack of discussion about the influence of recirculation rate on the stack. Due to passive regulating mechanism of the ejectors, a miniature speed-adjustable peristaltic pump is used to simulate the hydrogen ejector in this study to investigate the effect of hydrogen recirculation on the performance of PEMFC stack. Experiments are conducted under different pump flow rates. The stack with hydrogen recirculation is proven to have better performance, but over high pump flow rate can lead to hydrogen shortage. It is interesting to find that the flow rate fluctuation of hydrogen inlet affects the stability of stack performance, and pressure drop and recovery time during purge process are proposed as effective indicators for performance analysis. Finally, pump flow rates between 60 ml/min and 105 ml/min are defined as “effective area”. Based on the analysis of effective indicators, keeping at “effective area” is further proved to improve the performance of the stack, which is also useful to design hydrogen recirculation.  相似文献

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell is a well-known technology that has shown high efficiency and performance as a power system compared to conventional sources such as internal combustion engines. Especially, open cathode proton exchange membrane is growing more popular thanks to its simple structure, low cost and low parasitic losses. However, the open cathode fuel cell performance is highly related to the operating temperature variation and the airflow rate which is adjusted through the fan voltage. In this regard, the present study investigates the thermal management of an open cathode proton exchange membrane fuel cell. The objectives are the stack performance improvement and the stack degradation prevention. Indeed, a safety and optimal operating zone governed by the load current, the stack temperature and the air stoichiometry, is designed. This optimal operating zone is defined based on the system thermal balance and the operating constraints. Hence, the proposed control strategy deals concurrently with the stack temperature regulation and the air stoichiometry adjustment to guarantee the goals achievement. The performance of the proposed control strategy is verified through experimental studies with different operating conditions and results prove its efficiency. To properly design an appropriate control strategy, a multiphysic fuel cell model is developed based on acausal approach by mean of Matlab/Simscape and experimentally validated.  相似文献

Optimal design and proper operation is important to get designed output power of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. The air-cooling fuel cell stack is widely used in sub kW PEMFC systems. The purpose of this study is to analyze the operating conditions affecting the performance of an air-cooling PEMFC which is designed for portable applications. It is difficult to maintain well balanced operating conditions. These parameters are the relative humidity, the temperature of the stack, the utility ratio of the reactant gas and so on. In this study a 500 W rate air-cooling PEMFC was fabricated and tested to evaluate the design performance and to determine optimal operating conditions. Moreover, basic modeling also is carried out. These results can be used as design criteria and optimal operating conditions for portable PEMFCs.  相似文献

This paper reports a Hammerstein modeling study of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack using least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM). PEMFC is a complex nonlinear, multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) system that is hard to model by traditional methodologies. Due to the generalization performance of LS-SVM being independent of the dimensionality of the input data and the particularly simple structure of the Hammerstein model, a MIMO SVM-ARX (linear autoregression model with exogenous input) Hammerstein model is used to represent the PEMFC stack in this paper. The linear model parameters and the static nonlinearity can be obtained simultaneously by solving a set of linear equations followed by the singular value decomposition (SVD). The simulation tests demonstrate the obtained SVM-ARX Hammerstein model can efficiently approximate the dynamic behavior of a PEMFC stack. Furthermore, based on the proposed SVM-ARX Hammerstein model, valid control strategy studies such as predictive control, robust control can be developed.  相似文献

This study determines the optimum operating parameters for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack to obtain small variation and maximum electric power output using a robust parameter design (RPD). The operating parameters examined experimentally are operating temperatures, operating pressures, anode/cathode humidification temperatures, and reactant flow rates. First, the dynamic Taguchi method is used to obtain the maximum and stable power density against the different current densities, which are regarded as the systemic inputs considered a signal factor. The relationship between control factors and responses in the PEMFC stack is determined using a neural network. The discrete parameter levels in the dynamic Taguchi method can be divided into desired levels to acquire real optimum operating parameters. Based on these investigations, the PEMFC stack is operated at the current densities of 0.4–0.8 A/cm2. Since the voltage shift is quite small (roughly 0.73–0.83 V for each single cell), the efficiency would be higher. In the range of operation, the operating pressure, the cathode humidification temperature and the interactions between operating temperature and operating pressure significantly impact PEMFC stack performance. As the operating pressure increasing, the increments of the electric power decrease, and power stability is enhanced because the variation in responses is reduced.  相似文献

A design study of a novel proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is presented in this article. The PEMFC is particularly suited to the automotive and small-scale stationary industries; however, at this stage it fails to be a viable commercial alternative to the internal combustion engine. This is mainly due to large material and manufacturing costs associated with components used in the fuel cell. A new design approach that removes the bipolar plate from the PEMFC stack is investigated. A single PEMFC, which features the design changes that can be integrated in the main stack, has been designed, manufactured, assembled, and tested to obtain performance characteristics for a range of operating conditions. Two different flow configurations for the reactants, that is, dead-end gas flow and through-mode flow, were tested. The new design achieved performance comparable to that with conventional designs reported in literature. The experimental results confirmed that bipolar plate can be removed and it is possible to bring down the costs and weight of the stack drastically. It is envisaged that the new design will allow the PEMFC to potentially inject into the current market.  相似文献

The proton conductivity of perfluorinated ionomer membrane used in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) depends largely on the extent of hydration state of the membrane. Sufficient membrane hydration is achieved typically through the humidification of gases prior to feeding them into the fuel cell. Further, hydrogen humidification is known to have a larger impact on the performance of a PEMFC than the oxygen humidification. Bubble humidification has been a widely used method to externally humidify hydrogen. However, to-date a continuous bubble humidification system, which is essential to the continuous operation of the PEMFC system, has not been implemented. The main contributions of this work are (i) a design for continuous humidification of hydrogen for the PEMFC system and (ii) a method to maintain the RH of hydrogen between 93 and 95% (at desired temperature) over a wide range of gas flow rates. One of the key advantages of the proposed design is the flexibility of using recirculated stack coolant water to increase the energy efficiency of the PEMFC system. The design is first tested off-line and then online with a 1 kW stack. Results obtained from both the off-line and online tests indicate that the design successfully meets the demands of an online operation. It is observed that with the use of the proposed humidification scheme, the stack efficiency in terms of power output increases by about 6–19% of the power obtained under dry hydrogen conditions.  相似文献

The performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with various flow channel design (serpentine and interdigitated) with different landing to channel ratios (L:C = 1:1; 2:2) for an active area of 25 cm2 and 70 cm2, for single cell and two cells stack is studied and compared. The effect of back pressure on the PEMFC performance is also investigated. This study establishes a strong relation between back pressure and power output from a PEMFC. It was concluded that the interdigitated flow channel gives better results than the serpentine flow channel configuration for various landing to channel ratios. It was also found that power outputs do not proportionally increase with active area of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). Similarly, stacking up studies with single cell and two cell stack shows that the two cell stack has reduced power densities when compared to that of a single cell. The effect of cooling channels with natural and forced convection by using induced draught fan on the performance of a PEMFC stack is also studied. Fuel distribution and temperature management are found to be the significant factors which determine the performance of a PEMFC stack.  相似文献

For analyzing the performance of 120 kW polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system and its air supply system, an air system test bench was built, then applied on a 120 kW PEMFC system test bench composed of air supply subsystem, hydrogen supply subsystem, stack, cooling subsystem and electronic control subsystem. The strategy composed of feedforward table and Piecewise proportional integral (PI) feedback control strategy is employed to regulate the flow rate and pressure of air supply system. Firstly, the air compressor map and the mapping relationship between the speed of air compressor, opening of back-pressure valve and stack current are obtained by carrying out experiments on the PEMFC air system bench. Then, the max output performance, steady-state performance, the startup performance, the dynamic response abilities of PEMFC system are tested, respectively. During the experiments, performances under different test conditions were analyzed by comparing parameters such as voltage inconsistency, average voltage, minimum voltage, voltage range, net power of the PEMFC system, and stack power. The test results show that the air supply system can provide qualified flow rate and pressure for the PEMFC stack. The peak power of the stack is 120 kW and net power of the system is 97 kW when the current is 538 A. The response time from rated net power to idle net power is 12 s and from idle net power to rated net power is 23 s. The overshoot of average voltage and minimum voltage in the process of increasing load is both 0.01 V, which are 0.015 V and 0.02 V lower than that when the load is decreased, respectively. The dynamic response speed and stability of the PEMFC system in the process of decreasing the load are better than those in the process of increasing the load.  相似文献

The electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is characterized by a low and unregulated output voltage; thus, an interface between source and load is required for processing the generated energy by the PEMFC. In this paper, a solution for processing the energy generated by a PEMFC is given. A switching regulator is developed by using a quadratic boost converter with a single switch (QBC-SS). The controller for the QBC-SS is designed using average current-mode (ACM) control, which is easy to implement using analog circuits. The proposed switching regulator ensures high conversion ratios, output voltage regulation, adequate dynamic performance, and stability. On the other hand, a model with static characteristics for the PEMFC electrical behavior is proposed, which can be used for modeling and control purposes. This model consists of three parameters, which are computed using experimental data of the PEMFC stack. A laboratory prototype of 400 W is used to verify the analytical results. As an input source, a PEMFC system is used. The output voltage of the PEMFC stack ranges from 41 V to 24 V, which depends on the generated current. Experimental results applying load step changes and frequency response analysis are shown.  相似文献
