AbstractNanocrystalline 2024 aluminium alloy powders with an average grain size less than 50 nm, prepared by a unique technique which combines rapid solidification and mechanical milling, were consolidated into bulk material under various technical conditions via hot hydrostatic extrusion and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the consolidated alloy were experimentally investigated. The influence of the two main technical parameters, extrusion ratio and temperature, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as extruded alloy is made clear and the reasons why these two parameters had such an influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy are also discussed. Furthermore, suggestions are given for rationalising the extrusion ratio and temperature for the consolidation of the nanocry stalline 2024 aluminium alloy powders via hot hydro static extrusion. 相似文献

AbstractThe microstructure of dispersion-strengthened aluminium products manufactured by powder blending has been examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy, and the mechanical properties have been determined at room temperature and at elevated temperatures by tensile- and creep-testing.Powder variables, such as the size of the aluminium-powder particles and the size, volume concentration, and type of oxide (Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2) used as the dispersed phase, have been investigated, together with manufacturing variables, such as temperature of the extrusion billet, reduction ratio in extrusion, and heat-treatment after extrusion. Major variables are the size of the aluminium particles and the oxide concentration, and generally it has been found that the strength increases and the elongation decreases for decreasing size of aluminium particles and increasing oxide concentration. The elongation measured after extended creep-testing is, however, practically the same for all products, of the order of 1-3%.A subgrain structure is formed in the aluminium matrix during manufacturing. Subgrain-boundary-strengthening, which is effective at room temperature, is superimposed on oxide-strengthening; at elevated temperatures, oxide-strengthening only is of importance.A model has been proposed that relates the flow stress (0.2% offset) to the size of aluminium particles and the oxide concentration, and good agreement with the experimental data has been found. 相似文献

The present work focuses on the development of multilayer graphene reinforced aluminium metal matrix composites by powder metallurgy followed by hot extrusion. Microstructure, grain size analysis and mechanical properties of hot extruded unreinforced aluminium and graphene reinforced aluminium composites are presented here. Microstructure shows uniform distribution of graphene throughout the matrix. Experimental results reveal significant increase in hardness as well as tensile strength of composite as compared to unreinforced aluminium. The improvements in properties are attributed to uniformly dispersed graphene sheets, an excellent interfacial bonding between graphene and aluminium matrix and grain refinement caused by the addition of graphene. Further, the strengthening mechanisms involved in the aluminum-graphene composite have been discussed. The fracture studies show the transition of ductile fracture in case of pure aluminium to brittle fracture in case of aluminium-graphene composites. 相似文献

AbstractMore than a hundred experiments have been performed to investigate the extrusion mechanism involved and the effect of process variables on the structure, substructure, and mechanical properties of the extrude when processing atomized aluminium powder of varying mesh size. It is demonstrated that extrusion pressure is largely independent of the final properties and that the ductility of the extrude may be controlled by the process variables. A mechanism that agrees with experimental observations is suggested to explain the extrusion mechanics. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy results also support the theses presented. 相似文献
