Deposition of Laser Mirrors by Laser Beam Evaporation

A 200W c.w. CO₂ laser has been used to evaporate thin multilayer films of HfO₂-SiO₂ and ZrO₂-SiO₂. Higher values of laser damage resistance were found compared to similar layers produced by electron-beam evaporation.

Laser Heterodyning

The development of heterodyne detection from the radiowave to the optical region of the electromagnetic spectrum is briefly reviewed. Attention is focused on the submillimetre/far-infrared region. A simple phenomenological model for the transition from electric-field to photon-absorption detection is developed. The relative detected power at double- and sum-frequencies is multiplied by an attenuating coefficient that depends on the incident photon energy and on the effective temperature of the system. Several recent developments in heterodyne detection are mentioned.     

Laser rockets

The results of experimental and theoretical investigations of the dynamic characteristics of a laser rocket in the initial flight path segment are presented. The energy to a laser jet propulsor was delivered with the beam of a CO-or CO₂-pulsed laser with a pulse energy ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 kJ at a repetition frequency of 100 Hz.
