As infrared wireless LANs for in-building applications become more popular because of their many advantages, it is of interest to design such LANs to support the ATM protocol and therefore provide wireless access to fixed ATM networks. The architecture of such a LAN is presented in this article. Emphasis is placed on the protocol stacks of the model to provide seamless operation with the wired network, on the cellular topology, and on the MAC protocol. Under the proposed topology the system performance is revealed in terms of packet dropping probability, average access delay, channel throughput, and statistical multiplexing gain for a range of system parameters  相似文献

Wireless ATM (W-ATM) networks have been studied extensively. The extension of ATM network services to the wireless environment faces many interesting problems. The original ATM network was designed for high-speed noiseless, reliable channels. None of these characteristics are applicable to the wireless channel. One of the most critical aspects of a W-ATM network is the medium access control (MAC) protocol used by mobile terminals (MTs) to request service from the base station (BS), which has to consider the quality of service (QoS) of the specific application. In this article the authors analyze some MAC protocols, particularly those for TDMA systems, and discuss their advantages and disadvantages  相似文献

Wireless ATM networks: technology status and future directions   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The concept of “wireless ATM” (WATM), first proposed in 1992, is now being actively considered as a potential framework for new-generation wireless communication networks capable of supporting integrated, quality-of service (QoS) based multimedia services. In this review paper, we outline the technological rationale for wireless ATM, present a system-level architecture, and discuss key design issues for both mobile ATM switching infrastructure and radio access subsystems. The WATM radio access layer issues covered in this paper include: spectrum allocation; spectrum etiquette; modem technology; and medium access/data link control (MAC/DLC) protocols. Mobile ATM aspects such as ATM signaling extensions for handoff control, location management, and mobile QoS control are discussed. A summary of current wireless/mobile ATM technology development and standardization status is given, including an outline of our WATMnet prototype. The paper concludes with a discussion of future directions for wireless ATM technology such as Internet protocol (IP) integration and mobile multimedia terminals/applications  相似文献

The concept of a forwarding node, which receives packets from upstream nodes and then transmits these packets to downstream nodes, is a key element of any multihop network, wired or wireless. While high-speed IP router architectures have been extensively studied for wired networks, the concept of a "wireless IP router" has not been addressed so far. We examine the limitations of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol in supporting a low-latency and high-throughput IP datapath comprising multiple wireless LAN hops. We first propose a wireless IP forwarding architecture that uses MPLS with modifications to 802.11 MAC to significantly improve packet forwarding efficiency. We then study further enhancements to 802.11 MAC that improve system throughput by allowing a larger number of concurrent packet transmissions in multihop 802.11-based IP networks. With 802.11 poised to be the dominant technology for wireless LANs, we believe a combined approach to MAC, packet forwarding, and transport layer protocols is needed to make high-performance multihop 802.11 networks practically viable.  相似文献

Power management is an important issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) because wireless sensor nodes are usually battery powered, and an efficient use of the available battery power becomes an important concern specially for those applications where the system is expected to operate for long durations. This necessity for energy efficient operation of a WSN has prompted the development of new protocols in all layers of the communication stack. Provided that, the radio transceiver is the most power consuming component of a typical sensor node, large gains can be achieved at the link layer where the medium access control (MAC) protocol controls the usage of the radio transceiver unit. MAC protocols for sensor networks differ greatly from typical wireless networks access protocols in many issues. MAC protocols for sensor networks must have built‐in power conservation, mobility management, and failure recovery strategies. Furthermore, sensor MAC protocols should make performance trade‐off between latency and throughput for a reduction in energy consumption to maximize the lifetime of the network. This is in general achieved through duty cycling the radio transceiver. Many MAC protocols with different objectives were proposed for wireless sensor networks in the literature. Most of these protocols take into account the energy efficiency as a main objective. There is much more innovative work should be done at the MAC layer to address the hard unsolved problems. In this paper, we first outline and discuss the specific requirements and design trade‐offs of a typical wireless sensor MAC protocol by describing the properties of WSN that affect the design of MAC layer protocols. Then, a typical collection of wireless sensor MAC protocols presented in the literature are surveyed, classified, and described emphasizing their advantages and disadvantages whenever possible. Finally, we present research directions and identify open issues for future medium access research. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

On the impact of IEEE 802.11 MAC on traffic characteristics   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) is gaining widespread popularity as a layer-2 protocol for wireless local-area networks. While efforts have been made previously to evaluate the performance of various protocols in wireless networks and to evaluate the capacity of wireless networks, very little is understood or known about the traffic characteristics of wireless networks. In this paper, we address this issue and first develop an analytic model to characterize the interarrival time distribution of traffic in wireless networks with fixed base stations or ad hoc networks using the 802.11 MAC. Our analytic model and supporting simulation results show that the 802.11 MAC can induce pacing in the traffic and the resulting interarrival times are best characterized by a multimodal distribution. This is a sharp departure from behavior in wired networks and can significantly alter the second order characteristics of the traffic, which forms the second part of our study. Through simulations, we show that while the traffic patterns at the individual sources are more consistent with long-range dependence and self-similarity, in contrast to wired networks, the aggregate traffic is not self-similar. The aggregate traffic is better classified as a multifractal process and we conjecture that the various peaks of the multimodal interarrival time distribution have a direct contribution to the differing scaling exponents at various timescales.  相似文献

Distributed cooperative MAC for multihop wireless networks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This article investigates distributed cooperative medium access control protocol design for multihop wireless networks. Cooperative communication has been proposed recently as an effective way to mitigate channel impairments. With cooperation, single-antenna mobile terminals in a multi-user environment share antennas from other mobiles to generate a virtual multipleantenna system that achieves more reliable communication with a higher diversity gain. However, more mobiles conscribed for one communication inevitably induces complex medium access interactions, especially in multihop wireless ad hoc networks. To improve the network throughput and diversity gain simultaneously, we investigate the issues and challenges in designing an efficient MAC scheme for such networks. Furthermore, based on the IEEE 802.11 DCF, a cross-layer designed cooperative MAC protocol is proposed. The MAC scheme adapts to the channel condition and payload length.  相似文献

Multicasting is a desired function in both wired and wireless networks. Currently, multicasting‐based applications have pervasive presence and influence in our Internet. Wireless ATM aims to support different traffic types over a high speed wireless network. In particular, traditional approaches towards multicasting in wired networks cannot be directly applied to mobile ATM networks. This includes the mechanism proposed to handle mobility in wired networks. In this paper, we address the issues behind multicasting in wireless ATM networks and the underlying mechanisms to support handoffs of both unicast and multicast connections. Through simulation, we evaluated the performance of optimal core‐based tree (CBT), late‐joined CBT, optimal source‐based tree (SBT), and late‐joined SBT during changing multicast host membership conditions. In addition, we evaluated the impact of multicast receivers' migration on the total link cost of the resultant multicast tree. Simulation results revealed that source‐based trees incur more total link costs under both dynamic host membership and receivers' migration scenarios. However, it generates less control messages than the distributed CBT and SBT approaches. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

An ATM-based wireless network capable of supporting integrated voice, video and data services with Quality-of-Service (QoS) control is proposed as a key element of the future distributed multimedia computing scenario. A specific architecture for wireless ATM is described, and design issues are briefly discussed for each major functional layer of the network. The system approach is based on the incorporation of wireless channel specific medium access, data link and wireless control layers into a mobility-enhanced ATM protocol stack. Selected software emulation results are given for applicable Medium access Control (MAC) and Data Link Control (DLC) protocols. The paper concludes with a brief view of related ongoing prototyping activities aimed at demonstrating a seamless wired plus wireless multimedia networking environment.Presented in part at: Wireless Communications Seminar, Hong Kong IEEE/City U., Jan. 5, 1995, and 2nd Intl. This paper addresses network coding in wireless networks in conjunction with medium access control (MAC). It is known that coding over wired networks enables connections with rates that cannot be achieved by routing. However, the properties of wireless networks (e.g., omnidirectional transmissions, destructive interference, single transceiver per node, finite energy) modify the formulation of time-varying network coding in a way that reflects strong interactions with underlying MAC protocols and deviates from the classical approach used in wired network coding. To perform network coding over conflict-free transmission schedules, predetermined network realizations are separately activated by a time-division mechanism and the content of network flows is derived through network coding to optimize performance measures such as achievable throughput and energy costs. A systematic method is presented to construct linear wireless network codes and interactions with MAC schedules are discussed under wireless assumptions. Network coding is also extended to operate with arbitrary (random or scheduled access based) MAC protocols. Alternatively, conflict-free transmission schedules are jointly constructed with network codes by decomposing wireless networks into subtrees and employing graph coloring on simplified subtree graphs. Finally, network coding and plain routing are compared in terms of throughput, energy and delay performance under different MAC solutions.  相似文献

The multiple access control (MAC) problem in a wireless network has intrigued researchers for years. For a broad-band wireless network such as wireless ATM, an effective MAC protocol is very much desired because efficient allocation of channel bandwidth is imperative in accommodating a large user population with satisfactory quality of service. Indeed, MAC protocols for a wireless ATM network in which user traffic requirements are highly heterogeneous (classified into CBR, VBR, and ABR), are even more intricate to design. Considerable research efforts expended in tackling the problem have resulted in a myriad of MAC protocols. While each protocol is individually shown to be effective by the respective designers, it is unclear how time different protocols compare against each other on a unified basis. In this paper, we quantitatively compare seven previously proposed TDMA-based MAC protocols for integrated wireless data and voice services. We first propose a taxonomy of TDMA-based protocols, from which we carefully select seven protocols, namely SCAMA, DTDMA/VR, DTDMA/PR, DQRUMA, DPRMMA, DSA++, and PRMA/DA, such that they are devised based on rather orthogonal design philosophies. The objective of our comparison is to highlight the merits and demerits of different protocol designs  相似文献

Dynamic QoS Allocation for Multimedia Ad Hoc Wireless Networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper, we propose an approach to support QoS for multimedia applications in ad hoc wireless network. An ad hoc network is a collection of mobile stations forming a temporary network without the aid of any centralized coordinator and is different from cellular networks which require fixed base stations interconnected by a wired backbone. It is useful for some special situations, such as battlefield communications and disaster recovery. The approach we provide uses CSMA/CA medium access protocol and additional reservation and control mechanisms to guarantee quality of service in ad hoc network system. The reason we choose CSMA protocol instead of other MAC protocols is that it is used in most of currently wireless LAN productions. Via QoS routing information and reservation scheme, network resources are dynamically allocated to individual multimedia application connections.  相似文献

Enabling Efficient Peer-to-Peer Resource Sharing in Wireless Mesh Networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Wireless mesh networks are a promising area for the deployment of new wireless communication and networking technologies. In this paper, we address the problem of enabling effective peer-to-peer resource sharing in this type of networks. Starting from the well-known Chord protocol for resource sharing in wired networks, we propose a specialization that accounts for peculiar features of wireless mesh networks: namely, the availability of a wireless infrastructure, and the 1-hop broadcast nature of wireless communication, which bring to the notions of location awareness and MAC layer cross-layering. Through extensive packet-level simulations, we investigate the separate effects of location awareness and MAC layer cross-layering, and of their combination, on the performance of the P2P application. The combined protocol, MeshChord, reduces message overhead of as much as 40 percent with respect to the basic Chord design, while at the same time improving the information retrieval performance. Notably, differently from the basic Chord design, our proposed MeshChord specialization displays information retrieval performance resilient to the presence of both CBR and TCP background traffic. Overall, the results of our study suggest that MeshChord can be successfully utilized for implementing file/resource sharing applications in wireless mesh networks.  相似文献

Mobile ATM offers a common wired network infrastructure to support mobility of wireless terminals, independent of the wireless access protocol. In addition, it allows seamless migration to future wireless broadband services, such as wireless ATM, by enabling mobility of end-to-end ATM connections. In spite of the diversity in mobile networking technologies (e.g., cellular telephony, mobile-IP, packet data services, PCS), all of them require two fundamental mechanisms: location management and handoff. This article describes different schemes for augmenting a wired ATM network to support location management of mobile terminals and handoff protocols for rerouting a connection data path when the endpoint moves. A prototype implementation of mobile ATM integrating mobility support with ATM signaling and connection setup, is presented. It shows how mobile ATM may be used to provide mobility support to an IP terminal using non-ATM wireless access  相似文献

In this article, a comprehensive survey of the medium access control (MAC) approaches for wireless mobile ad hoc networks is presented. The complexity in MAC design for wireless ad hoc networks arises due to node mobility, radio link vulnerability and the lack of central coordination. A series of studies on MAC design has been conducted in the literature to improve medium access performance in different aspects as identified by the different performance metrics. Tradeoffs among the different performance metrics (such as between throughput and fairness) dictate the design of a suitable MAC protocol. We compare the different proposed MAC approaches, identify their problems and discuss the possible remedies. The interactions among the MAC and the higher layer protocols such as routing and transport layer protocols are discussed and some interesting research issues are also identified. The evolution of the Internet has been mainly promoted in recent years by the emergence and proliferation of wireless access networks towards a global ambient and pervasive network accessed from mobile devices. These new access networks have introduced new MAC layers independently of the legacy “wire-oriented” protocols that are still at the heart of the protocol stacks of the end systems. This principle of isolation and independence between layers advocated by the OSI model has its drawbacks of maladjustment between new access methods and higher-level protocols built on the assumption of a wired Internet. In this paper, we introduce and deliver solutions for several pathological communication behaviors resulting from the maladjustment between WLAN MAC and higher layer standard protocols such as TCP/IP and UDP/IP. Specially, based on an efficient analytical model for WLANs bandwidth estimation, we address in this paper the two following issues: (1) Performance degradation due to the lack of flow control between the MAC and upper layer resulting in potential MAC buffer overflow; (2) Unfair bandwidth share issues between various type of flows. We show how these syndromes can be efficiently solved from neutral “cross layer” interactions which entail no changes in the considered protocols and standards.  相似文献
